I'm not a client, but a subscriber on his YouTube channel for a while. I was surprised to find his business is about a 30 minute drive from me. I noticed the negative reviews and wanted to express how disappointed I feel because of this platform that can negatively impact reputable businesses. Most the reviews are positive so it's easy to know this is a great business. I think it's amazing how people will seek a professional for something they're inexperienced with, yet they reject any form of help that is better than they could ever manage on their own. Some people can't be trained. Lol. And give the man a break, he manages a successful training platform on YouTube that takes up a lot of time. Watch the videos and learn a thing or two until you can get a live session. Anyhoo, Beckman, I just wanted to say I have enjoyed watching your expertise with dog on dog training. I was really hoping that Beckman's was not too good to be true. I originally sent my dog there for a 2 week board and train for 2 issues, he has separation anxiety when he is put in a crate or is not in the same room as me and he is a bucking bronco on walks when he sees other dogs or just gets excited. He was 4 months old his first round and they were able to get him to calm down a little during walks. However, the solution for the separation anxiety in the crate was to leave him out of the crate. While that option worked for a while, it has manifested in a new way. So the underlying issue was not fixed. He has also become way more challenging during walks. So, I tried a follow up 4 day board and train. I explained my concerns to Liz when I dropped him off and she suggested a Gentle Leader. She told me she would buy one and train him with it. When I picked him up 4 days later, she gave me a quick, rushed lesson with the Gentle Leader and sent us on our way. The next day when I tried to put the Gentle Leader on him he ran away and then froze. I tried treats and could not get him to walk. I did not want to pull because I did not want to hurt him. I text Liz and explained to her what was happening and sent her some videos. She gave me some more suggestions, none of them worked. I finally asked her what she did to get him to walk when he was wearing the Gentle Leader and she admitted to me that they never trained him with the Gentle Leader. They just trained him on loose leash walking and basic commands. The loose leash walking is not even helpful because he still gets very excited and lunges when he sees other dogs. Liz told me she would send me videos of my dog's training and I never heard back. When I followed up with her, I never heard back. I was so disappointed when she told me they never even used the Gentle Leader on him. They sent him home for me to train, but had no problem charging me for the training. Basically, I have paid over $2700 to be at square 1. I work with my dog every single day. I was in need of expert experience and I did not get that at all. read more

This review revision is LONG overdue... Though I have not (yet) had an appointment with him out at his facility , a revision is still warranted because I've had the opportunity of meeting him in person twice at his monthly Kahoots Pet Store appearances with my dog , Lily , and given those great experiences and how nice he is and how giving of his time like that , it just wasn't fair to continue to allow my review to drag down his rating average . Although my opinion on business response times has not changed which is why the original review dialogue remains here , please don't let that dissuade you from using his services (you'll have much better luck by just booking straight away and ask whatever q's you may have later) . Also I sometimes see comments on YouTube that some people are turned off by his snarky personality (which I , as well as most people, actually find to be a very entertaining and amusing element to his amazing videos ). He isn't really like that when you meet him in person . Not saying he portrays different personas. That's not true either . I'm just saying he's extremely nice in person and I was so impressed with how willing he is to stay at times over an hour past his appearance end times to meet and chat with people and their dogs one on one . And I STILL feel that way. Which is what make this such a bummer . I reached out via his website one week ago on a Wednesday and got zero response. So following his own direction on his website about being best reached by text , I did exactly that on Sunday during business hours. I expressed the urgency of my need (my dogs got in a fight on Saturday evening). Still nothing . So then finally on Monday , I sent one last email attempt and very politely asked what the typical response turnaround time is so that I could determine if I needed to look elsewhere given the urgency of my need. And still.. nothing ... I don't care how busy you are or how many more important clients you have than little ole me. If you advertise your business and being available and accessible to the general public , then you need to be exactly that. If not, then you need to say you are not taking on additional clients at this time . It's not acceptable , in any capacity, to just simply blow someone off and not respond . A weeks time is too long to not get back to a potential customer . And worse , that is STILL is the case . I've yet to hear from anyone aside from the immediate auto-email that said someone will reach out "soon ". Well, no one has and that is unacceptable . That goes for a mom and pop shop, large business , corporate business, celebrity clientele , etc. it doesn't matter , it's simply never ok. If you love your dog then stay well away. This guy cannot train dogs, he just bullys them into doing what he wants which will ruin the bond between you and your dog and ultimately make these behaviours more pronounced. His entire approach is wrong, he cannot recognise underlying issues and just beats the symptoms out of the dog (which won't last long). you are essentially paying for him to mop up water instead of fixing the leak and hurting your dog in the process. His ego is also way too involved, he loves his no-nonse hard man approach but it's painfully clear he is very insecure which is just taken out on vulnerable animals. I know his 'quick fixes' with good old fashioned discipline seem enticing but don't enable this guy, he should never be trusted with any animal. read more

If I could give less than one star I would. They had my dog for 21 days. They promised videos throughout the training, updates etc etc etc. I got absolutely nothing. The only correspondence I ever got was after I reached out the last week. Then magically I got a handful of videos. It was raining in the videos, it was obvious they just made the videos. None of the videos were of any training. THEN!!! When we picked him up, after not seeing him for weeks , he was kind of skiddish- he's an ACD they're not skiddish and he's has never been skiddish in my life or his. We got him in the car his mouth was swollen, his eyes were swollen and red, and he had awful diarrhea. My dog was traumatized by this and I couldn't believe that after all of that money and reassurance, my dog ended up with vets bills because of his mouth being infected, his eyes being infected, and his stomach issues. DO NO ISE THIS SERVICE. They did give me my money back but with an attitude like I did something wrong. He should stick to killer whales. read more

Joel is an experienced trainer. Due to some reasons, my dog lacked early socialization training. The day I took my unsocialized German Shepherd to the session, he quickly diagnosed the issue and pointed out that she had been spoiled by us, which was a problem we hadn't noticed. His well-trained dogs did help my silly girl with socialization and taught her some manners to respect other dogs. She came back like a very happy dog (making new friends in her life for the first time), we were very satisfy with his class. The only downside is that his appointments are too full, and the next session has to wait for over a month. I hope he can open up more time slots in the future. read more

Joel and Liz are amazing trainers. Last fall I adopted my first dog, a 4-month old blue heeler mix, and felt incredibly overwhelmed. I scoured yelp, google, and any other review site looking for help. I met with several trainers and was really uncertain about their methods or effectiveness, but I came across Beckman's Dog Training. I sent Joel a text on Friday afternoon and got a call on Saturday morning. After a brief conversation, he was able to fit me into the schedule and came to the house the next day. My dog responded well to Joel immediately, and Joel taught me how to correct him when he pulled while we were walking. I decided to follow up with a 3-week board and train, and I'm so glad I did. My dog came home a much better behaved pup. He still has more learning ahead of him, but before and after is like night and day. Loose leash walking, sit, stay, come, etc. are a million times better than before. There may not be a live camera feed for you to watch your dog from home, but I never once worried about my dog while he was there. The Beckman's have a great place with a giant pasture and a shallow pool for the dogs to play in. I knew my pup wasn't going to be sitting in a kennel all day in between short training sessions (like he might with other training facilities), instead he was going to be constantly learning, playing, and having a great time. Most recently, when my dog suddenly became a picky eater, the Beckman's were so kind and responsive in helping me troubleshoot the problem. I had tried everything with no success, so after he spent the day with them, Liz suggested I send him back for a long weekend. I don't know what magic they worked, but after he spent 4 days at Beckman's he returned happy and back to eating normally. I am beyond grateful. As far as the Beckmans themselves go, Liz is quite possibly the nicest person ever. She is so friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. My dog loves her and she has made some great recommendations for food and accessories for my pup (when my dog had eating issues, she brainstormed with me about different foods to try and she even sat on the ground and hand-fed my dog wet food to get him to eat). I've read a couple of the reviews on here about Joel being abrupt, and here is the thing to know about Joel: he is not going to waste your time or your money. In my experience, Joel is actually really nice, always thoughtful, and incredibly smart. He knows what he's talking about, and he really takes the time to understand the dogs he's working with. The only problem is that they don't offer daycare, and no other facility can really compare. There is no other place that I feel this comfortable sending my dog and I will absolutely be sending my dog back to Beckmans for boarding and training in the future. We adopted our rescue three months ago and found ourselves with a really sweet dog but highly crazy leash reactive with dogs. We have a personal trainer, which we really like but none of his corrections really seemed to get through to our dog. Thinking he is super frustrated on leash and might need to just get around other dogs in a controlled situation we did not know what to do. Even though we were told by the rescue he was around other dogs without incident, we were very unsure what his intent was because he turns into Cujo when he sees dogs even from 100+ yards away. I've been following Beckman's videos on YouTube and really liked what I saw. The price for a private Fiesty Fido session is not cheap and we had to drive almost 2 hours to get to his facility in Ramona but I can say it was worth every penny. Joel's knowledge of dog behavior and professionalism is top notch. He does not waste your time and is very honest when assessing your dog and what needs to be done. We were able to find out that our dog is indeed a frustrated somewhat dominant dog and he growled at every dog when meeting through a fence but was able to be with 5 dogs unleashed and muzzled with no issue and then without a muzzle. He even played with one dog in particular. Unfortunately, we have a looong way to go with him as he was still crazy reactive and a jerk to Joel at the end of the session by being reactive to another dog while leashed and blowing off Joel when trying to get him to sit. We started Joel's advice the minute we got him in the car to leave. We are definitely going to go for another session in about a month. Joel is a Godsend! We attended the puppy training for our Bichon/Terrier mix who was an ornery little bugger! He refused to listen to ANYTHING my wife and I told him. Joel was patient and taught our dog to listen to us AND taught us how to communicate with the dog. (3 for the price of 1!) While our little one still has separation anxiety, when we tell him to perform any action he immediately complies. Even if he is zoned in on a bird and so desperately wants to chase it, if we give him a "sit/stay" command, he plops his little butt down on the ground and looks ever so longingly at the bird! Some people are born with gifts. It's obvius that Joel's gift (and love) is training dogs. In actually, he doesn't train the dog. He trains you and conditions your dog to respond to your training. I've raised 5 dogs from pups to burial and I thought I knew a lot. I learned an incredible ammount of "dog language" from Joel. And Joel's whoofie was patient with our dog and taught him a lot too. We are attending the puppy class by Beckman's Dog Training provided at Kahoot's in West Escondido, and have been very pleased by the experience. For one, they are exactly what I think a puppy class should be. Tons of play time with intermittent 5 minute training sessions for the puppies. This gives the puppies great socialization and allows them to learn how to play properly in a safe environment, but still provides the owners with some instruction on basic commands and the instructor can give the owners feedback on how they are doing. The instructors are great! Really helpful tips and always makes sure everyone (puppies and people) have a great experience. Highly recommended. read more

We boarded our 2 year old husky with them at their Ramona facility for 3 weeks and it was worth every dollar, she came back a whole new pup! When I first called for some information, Joel was very abrupt on the phone, and he would not allow me to simply come watch a training session. He seemed to not want to answer all of my questions and he made me feel that my questions were not important and he cut the call short. Though his phone manners leave a lot to be desired, I however did make an appointment. Upon showing up, and after hearing Joel gloating about his personal background, he claimed he would not be the actual trainer. Joel was hurrying us through his introduction of the facilities and again, rushed us out saying he had to take care of some dogs. When you rescue a dog, sometimes you bring in a lot of special problems as well. Our dog- Jones was rescued and had tons of little issues and a few big ones. Social anxiety, fear, obedience, and much more. Though a loving dog, when he met anyone knew, he'd go crazy not to mention walking him on a leash was a nightmare. We scheduled a vacation and a drop off for Jones with Joel and and the Beckman's team. Weeks later, when we came back, we we're shocked. It was like night and day. He wasn't 100% cured of his big problems, but had taken huge strides and each day continues to surprise us. As for his obedience and leash walking? That's mere perfect. Walks to my left like a proper dog with my stride and listens when called and told to do things. Our dogs LOVE Joel! I think it's like sending them on a doggy vacation at a four star resort when they board with him. If our dogs see our suitcases out, or hear mention of going to see Joel and Bosco (Joel's family dog) it sends them into a tizzy. They first bonded with Joel during an intensive two week board and training stay, where he worked with them on all the things that were important to us (walking on a leash without pulling our arms out of joint, not bolting out the door every chance they got, or jumping on people acting like lunatics when we had visitors, etc.). Since then, we have been using him for all of our boarding needs. Our two dogs love going to his place and we love knowing they are being treated well. He takes videos and pictures, and emails them to us so we can see our dogs out having fun in the pasture and swimming in the pond. They get lots of walks, exercise, and training which our high energy dogs need. The facilities are clean with lots of room to run and play. It's nice going on vacation and not worrying or feel guilty about leaving the pups behind. read more

My French Bulldog is perfect! Ok I am totally lying. He actually is a good dog, it is his owners that need the obedience training. After finally realizing that it really was not all the other dogs starting fights over balls at the park and walking the dog did not mean him pulling me as hard as he could down the street we called Joel Beckman. We started at a class with Joel and Emily at Camp Run A Mutt in Point Loma. Six weeks of one hour classes that covered everything from loose leash walking, leave it, not jumping on everyone who says hello, etc. I have to admit after working all day the thought of going to dog class was the last thing I wanted to do, but the classes are actually alot of fun. They even held a doggie olympics game with prizes (for the dogs) and we left with a Beckman dog training diploma. After the six weeks were over, we decided to continue our training privately with Joel. We go to his place in Ramona, I swear it really is not THAT far, he has a great field and pool for the dogs to train and play. Joel has to be the most patient man on the planet, not only for my dog but for me who tends to be a bit A.D.D. He has such a kind and humane approach to training, He truely cares for your pet. Corwin, his human helper, and Bosco his family pet are great too! There is no quick fix to training your dog. Joel has taught us that consistency, positive reinforcement, learning to communicate and having fun with your dog are tools to keep you and your doggie happy and safe. I consider myself dog savvy. For the past 20 years I have had and trained boxers without the help of a professional trainer. When our last boxer died we decided to get a doberman puppy. Piper is very smart but was a challenge to train. Along came Joel! We sent Piper to "board and train" for 2 weeks it was the best money that we ever spent!!!!! Piper came home a well behaved dog. Is she perfect? No. But she is a puppy and the concerns that we did have are completely gone! No more jumping, sit and stay when told and no more pulling on the leash. I don't know how Joel and his team do this but they have a special gift. I am sending Piper back for another week when we go out of town in May. We LOVE Joel and Liz and their team (Rachel and Corwin)!! Our dog, Buddy, did Board and Train back in May when we were out of town for a couple of weeks and had so much fun and learned a lot. We love boarding Buddy with the Beckman's even if we're just out of town overnight (only dogs who have been trained by Joel can be boarded...I really like that!). It's worth the drive to Ramona (from Point Loma) to know that he is in great hands, will be able to play with other dogs, and that he's having FUN! You can also work it out to have them come pick up your dog if you can't make it to Ramona...a great perk! Joel and his team are really knowledgeable, professional, and they love animals. Our little guy is quite a handful -- really high energy, some separation issues, and VERY vocal (part Cocker Spaniel), but I never feel "judged" when we drop him off...even though he usually causes quite a scene. I took a Beckman's class hosted at Camp Run A Mutt Point Loma with Andrea and she is amazing! I never knew how to describe my pup's naughty behavior and within one minute of meeting him (class hadn't even started yet) she hit the nail on the head - IMPULSE CONTROL. From the first class she taught me how to challenge his impulse control and correct his naughty behavior. By the end of the 5 week course, I feel so much more confident in my training ability and my pup Theo has improved so much! His biggest accomplishment is "leave it" and not yanking on walks to try and eat random stuff off the ground. Thank you Andrea!! My husband and I took the basic obedience class for our 6 month old Beagle at Kahoots in Escondido. From the first class to the last we gained so much helpful knowledge from Joel. Let me just say this: Joel speaks dog and dogs just love him. He knows dogs like no other. We have a Saint Bernard puppy that I thought I put a lot of training into, but it turns out that I didn't. As our Saint Bernard got bigger and bigger we knew we had to find somebody who can handle challenging behaviors. After meeting with different trainers that told us we would have to use shock and prong collars on him, we were more than relieved to meet Joel who has a very firm yet positive approach with dogs. Since we understand that there isn't a quick fix when it comes to training a dog and we really needed to see results we decided to leave him for two weeks with Joel.Not only did Joel work wonders on him he also taught us more than anybody else about dogs. We are more than happy to have now a very calm, obedient and happy dog. Joel is always available for questions and concerns that we have and takes his time to make sure that any issue is being resolved. I am very pleased with the results obtained from Joel's classes at Kahoots. My dog was stubborn and wild, leading to the beginning of aggressive behaviors. We attended two sessions, and I left with a dog who would obey basic commands, walk politely on a leash, and approach people in the proper manner. He also gained a great deal of confidence and is a better companion all around. I wish there were higher level classes to attend. I was particularly impressed with the way Joel and his team handled multiple dogs - big ones, little ones, angry ones, crazy ones, shy ones...they were evaluated during the first class, matched with compatible dogs, and separated so no one was intimidated or injured. Joel and his trainers have helped our rescue dog with many issues, fear being the major problem. Our pup went to Beckman's board and train for 15 days, my husband was not real happy with the discion so I was really hoping for good progress, results! Milly, my husband, and I are much happier and enjoy having a fun and happy dog. She learned loose leash walking, sit, stay, and much more, best of all she now loves to run and play with other dogs and wags her tail! Milly still has a fear issue, we don't know why but now it is much more managable as we have a beter understanding of Milly and her behaviors. In addition, Milly has been going to Beckman's for follow up training that was included in the price of board and train, they are always ready to help. joel's place looked like the perfect place for my dog who just does not know how to play. leash reactive. he was very nice but they are not taking reactive dogs anymore. i guess it's a live-in obedience school for a few weeks. oh my. he did offer me 4 hours with him and another trainer for $1000!!!!!!! oh my shite. been there done that, my dog needs to be around some solid dogs for a while. i guess in the dog world it's become all about the benjamins. read more
