Be wary if you have FOOD ALLERGIES. Not sure what was up with the staff on 09/07/2025, but they refused to make me a latte w/ oat milk because I have a dairy allergy, confusing because they've made it many times before for me with no issue. Here's the thing about this restaurant....came here for breakfast. Learned we had to order at the cafe counter and bring our coffees to our tables - if there are any tables available. We ordered two avocado toasts with bacon and two coffees. My bill was $80 after I tipped $15. I brought my coffee to a table. Pretty place. The waiter brings our food over and a bowl of fruit. I thought - oh how nice - he brought fruit over as a thank you for me tipping decently. He came back 5 minutes later to take the bowl away bc he said it belonged to another table. eyeroll. I told him I already touched the fruit and he might as well throw it away instead of giving it to the other table. What a crock of sh*t. If you want water you have to get it yourself. If you want condiments you have to get it yourself. So I'd like to say as a tourist I will never come back here. $20'some for an avocado toast is crazy. A year after our first visit we returned. This is a perfect spot for a cup of cappuccino- expertly made by the barista. On a cold fall and rainy day, the outdoor setting is especially welcoming in the age of Covid: spaced out large glass covered tables and gas heaters, protected from the wind and rain. Great if you have a furry friend in tow. Bathroom is immaculate as well. We had the avocado toast and cheeseburger- both were excellent. Good place to sit and plan the rest of your day! My family and I enjoyed a fantastic dinner at BTB last night, from start to finish. We got seated in a prime spot, in the middle of the tented, cozily lit patio. Our waiter, José, went above and beyond, sharing stories, giving excellent recommendations, and making my ten year old feel at ease in an adult establishment. **Subject: Highly Racist Experience - Beware if You're Brown or Black** I had a reservation via Resy and encountered the worst, most racist experience imaginable. From the start, the host seated us at a table hidden in the corner, despite other tables being available. They claimed these were reserved by name--fine. But then, the horror began. Our food didn't arrive for 40 minutes. The manager appeared, saying there were issues in the kitchen and many tickets were misplaced--only to later reveal it was just ours. He then said it would take another 40 minutes, which we accepted. However, he returned again to say they couldn't make our food and that we should leave (though we didn't have to pay for a beer and 2 appetizers). This happened past 10:15 PM, leaving us with no other dining options. It was blatantly clear they didn't want us there. Never have I experienced such overt racism, as others were being served while we were told no more food was available. This was not just poor service--it was a racist act. (No meat). This and a small bottle of IJ was $38.00 not including tip. You order at a counter and besides dropping the food at your table there is no service-- so I don't get why the tip- but I added for good will, anyway. The egg concoction was extremely salty!! I brought it in and requested that two eggs be scrambled and to put a little cheese on the side. I received the same extremely salty eggs without the soupy goo. They were mushy and obviously came from the same batch of poorly seasoned eggs. As I had given up and eaten the second effort the manager asked me if it was better. I let him know that all I wanted for the $38 was fresh scrambled eggs and toast, I saw others eating other things on their menu, who made no comment that what they had was any good-- since there were only about 6 people in there- it wouldn't have been hard to miss their comments. Everything was delicious! They recommend making a reservation for dinner (which you can do on Resy), but we didn't have trouble making a same-day reservation only a few hours in advance. The food here is good, but it is crazy overpriced and not particularly filling. It's okay to have overpriced food in Edgartown, but t isn't okay to have us leave hungry. I clarify that I am not fat. Our group ordered the sea bass special, seared tuna and mussels. The sea bass was excellent. The seared tuna was good, but a little bland. The mussels were also good but were identified under the "large plate" section of the menu. The mussels were insufficient in quantity to qualify as more than an appetizer for two people. Further, the bread that was supposed to come with it was burned to a crisp. Service was adequate except that the wrong drink was delivered at one point and the server found it more amusing than anything else. While explaining that it was someone else's fault, she got into an argument with a customer at another table about which employee was at fault for switching the drink order, which is hardly professional. Behind the Bookstore is my favorite place on the island for it's setting and food. I feel like the rest of the island is so old/traditional and catering to an older generation. The bookstore on the other hand feels young, hip, and has a millenial vibe to it. Came here for coffee and breakfast a few times. They have fancy coffee drinks, light tasty food, and only outdoor seating under large awnings sandwiched between large trees. In the morning we had Johnny Cakes, Shakshuka, and Breakfast Sandwich. The breakfast sandwich is tasty, the Johnny Cakes are hearty, and the Shakshuka is an interesting and delicious dish (originated from Middle East) to find on the menu. Downsides are that the service is slow, and the dinner menu seems too extravagant for a cafe atmosphere type of place. read more

If you are thinking of coming here just don't. It was the worst meal that we had on the island. I asked for a plain grilled cheese sandwich instead of the arugula, sausage grilled cheese sandwich. Review is for weekend coffee and breakfast, only. I was visiting Martha's Vineyard for the first time this past summer and the name of this cafe sparked my curiosity. I had to check it out. It is literally located behind a bookstore. The entrance is a short alley way to the side of the bookstore. The cafe only offers outdoor seating but there is shelter on certain parts so you can still remain seated at some tables during the rain. The ambiance is really pretty, as if you are dining in a (hidden) garden. The cafe seems to set itself apart from the rest of town. It has a more modern vibe as oppose to the traditional old town feel. There is also a bar for alcohol so you can opt for a boozy lunch if you do not want caffeine. I came during breakfast time on a weekend and there was already decent crowd for eat-in and take out. Plenty of locals and tourists come here. While I enjoyed the ambiance very much, the food was overpriced. They offer simple breakfast items that you can find at most cafes such as avocado or smoked salmon toast, BLT, egg sandwich, pancakes, granola parfaits. To charge in the teens for such ordinary sandwiches or yogurt is not worth it. Coffee and food were good, but not for such a steep price. In essence, you are paying for the ambiance. Also, like other reviews say, the service was slow and food (a simple sandwich) took longer than expected to come out. For visitors, this place is worth visiting once to satisfy your curiosity and enjoy the ambiance. Then, go elsewhere for coffee and breakfast/lunch for the remaining part of your stay. read more

This café had a wonderful ambiance, however, the experience was extremely unpleasant. Upon walking into BTB, we were informed that we had 2 minutes to place our breakfast orders. In a panic my friend and I both ordered the waffles ($18!). When their system momentarily shut down upon inserting my card, the hostess rolled her eyes at me as though it was my own fault. I also ordered an iced mocha which was decent. The waffles came out cold, dry, and nearly inedible despite their deceiving plating. The texture was similar to that of cardboard or styrofoam. An Eggo would have made me happier than this $18 "waffle". If I am spending $30 on breakfast (waffle,mocha,&tip), I expect for it to be edible and the service to be somewhat decent which is sadly not what I experienced here. read more
