This café had a wonderful ambiance, however, the experience was extremely unpleasant. Upon walking into BTB, we were informed that we had 2 minutes to place our breakfast orders. In a panic my friend and I both ordered the waffles ($18!). When their system momentarily shut down upon inserting my card, the hostess rolled her eyes at me as though it was my own fault. I also ordered an iced mocha which was decent. The waffles came out cold, dry, and nearly inedible despite their deceiving plating. The texture was similar to that of cardboard or styrofoam. An Eggo would have made me happier than this $18 "waffle". If I am spending $30 on breakfast (waffle,mocha,&tip), I expect for it to be edible and the service to be somewhat decent which is sadly not what I experienced here. read more

I loved everything about this place when we visited during a recent weekend on MV. Upon our arrival to the island our taxi driver (Milos, who was amazing) pointed it out as a great place for breakfast (pretty sure he said best on the island). Our first full day we stopped in for a coffee while shopping. Two others that I was traveling with ordered a Lavender Iced Latte made with Oatmilk. At first I thought that didn't sound appealing at all, but I decided to give it a try too. WOW, I was blown away. Best iced coffee beverage I ever tasted. As soon as I walked away I wished I had ordered another one to go. The next morning four of us went back for breakfast. Along with the breakfast sandwich i ordered I got my second Iced Lavender Latte, which was as good as the day before. Everyone in our party loved the food and atmosphere, and the service was excellent. The only improvement I could suggest is tableside ordering service. You have to order inside and then grab a table, and they bring the food out to you. That won't take away at all from my rating since I loved, loved, loved this place. I will be back. read more

Every time I come to the vineyard this is definitely a stop. The food is delicious but on the pricy end. The real star is the coffee. The barista has been there a while and knows how to make a good latte, cold brew, and drip. Expect to wait in line. But the atmosphere is enjoyable. read more

Ok, this place is perfection. The decor, the food, the service is amazing. If I lived there, i would forever be there. So i went for breakfast and as soon as you walk in you see a casual outdoor tent setting with a raw bar outside. Walk to the back and you order your breakfast. Everyone was super friendly. I ordered their avocado toast with soft boiled eggs. I didnt even know anyone can achieve those flavors. It was perfect. I washed it down with an iced lavender latte... yup... it felt so zen! the ambiance is nice enough, if the price point were lower. but at these prices you would expect much better ambiance, service and better tasting food. as with most martha's vineyard businesses the summer staff is made up of inexperienced college students or young persons from abroad. there is one bathroom for the entire restaurant and staff and it's right by the kitchen so you get to see the chaos that is clearly happening behind the swinging doors. wish we hadn't wasted our time and especially our money at this place since it was a big disappointment all around. don't even get me started on the entrees... no flavor and over cooked. read more

During COVID everyone sitting on the back patio was maskless (as it should be) but if you were STANDING or WALKING in the outside back patio area you got yelled at for not wearing a mask. In other words, they were somehow under the impression that the virus behaved differently if you were either sitting or standing. Talk about a lack of critical thinking skills. Beautiful environment but the customer service is ok. We got 2 salads and there was almost no flavor at all. We could tell there was some type of dressing on it but it had truly no flavor. We are really easy customers , so we just went up and asked for some extra dressing of some kind so we could make the best of it. They told us the kitchen was closed and there was nothing they could do. The meal was 60$ for two salads and a appetizer of lobster spring rolls. The spring rolls were pretty good but definitely unhappy with paying 60$ and getting 2 salads with no flavor or a willingness to refund our money. read more

A general note of appreciation to "BTB" for staying open well past peak season this year. I also appreciated their branching out their coffee service into Vineyard Haven for part of the summer, though that secondary location closed immediately after Labor Day - hope it may return next year. Food items in general are on the high end price-wise, though I have found the quality to be correspondingly high of those entrees that I have tried. The "porridge" (interesting to see that dish name on an American menu) was particularly memorable. I have come to rely on a semi-regular dosage of their coffees this year, finding that they often offer the highest flavor quality to be found across the island. Pastries are also worth considering, though can also be priced on the high side. read more

Two words: avocado toast. Mmmmm. My husband and I came here after finding just about every other Edgartown breakfast joint closed for the season. This place was open, but with a limited menu and outdoor seating only. No matter - the selections they had were sufficient and the food and beverage delightful! We sat outside (seemed to be dog friendly) in a lovely little area tucked away from the street. We ordered the chai latte (yum) and the mocha latte (my husband said the best he's ever had). For food, I ordered the avocado toast, piled high with fresh avocado and sprinkled with some lovely specialty salt and pepper. My husband had the fried egg BLT and he said it delivered! This restaurant was really cute! Service was fast and very safe especially with new covid restrictions. Avocado Toast was phenomenal with ricotta on top and the Chopped Salad with grilled shrimp was a refreshing lunch on a hot day. honestly? i'd say it's overpriced, though really the only place to get decent food in edgartown without having to go to a fine dining restaurant. I got the asian bowl, which for $22 a cup of rice with some veggies is not worth it at all. The wait time was insane, though i do get that it being 12:30pm and lunchtime it was just a coincidence, and i get that, though everyone was waiting for more than half an hour for their food. I waited for takeout for 40mins. That said I will say everyone there was super nice about it, they were apologizing, checking on my order, and were trying their best. Also, though it was not worth $22, it all turned out okay in the end, as for an apology for the wait time the owner gave me two free pastries AND THE FOOD OMG it was DELICIOUS. The sauces especially the asian sauce (peanut sauce) made it absolutely scrumptious. To sum it up food was good ngl but the place is definitely trying to earn as much money as they can while saving money by only hiring a few workers. read more

Agreeing with others - the service here is truly terrible. I came in at noon on a weekend for lunch. I ordered an iced latte, and the woman taking the order missed the "iced" part when putting the order in. I gently corrected them when I got the hot drink, and the woman who took my order told me, in a sarcastic tone, "If you wanted it iced, you should have asked for iced." That's it, no indication as to whether they would remake the drink. Just condescension, even though she was the one who got the order wrong. She also gave my friend an attitude and rolled her eyes when he asked her about a specialty drink. You're not obligated to educate anyone who can't google what a latte is, but when the menu doesn't explain any of the specialty drinks, people will have questions. I talked to a manager about this, but the manager responded "Oh, I'm sorry, he's just always like that." Turns out the manager thought I meant the barista. Yikes. (Edit: the barista Mikhail is now personally harassing me) But the manager did seem apologetic and asked if there was anything she could do, and took the rude person off the register. The iced latte was good, and the seating area was nice, but we waited a long time for our food. It took around 40 minutes to get our orders, even though the place wasn't crowded, and we ordered sandwiches off the menu without substitutions. Another friend split off from our group, went to go get a meal at a different place, ate it, and came back before we even got our first sandwich. Sandwiches were ~$13 and bad. The brisket was dry and my other friend couldn't even get halfway through her turkey sandwich. I also got a biscuit, which was stale and greasy. Tl;dr: we overpaid so that someone could be mean to us while we waited a long time for our bad food to arrive. ----- EDIT: After this review, Mikhail, a barista at BTB, started harassing me on Yelp. Mikhail the barista left three 5-star reviews of BTB, using different accounts and different names (H D.; Mikhail S.; & California D.) Two of these accounts (H D. & California D.) private messaged me via Yelp to send me a copy of Mikhail S.'s review. All three left separate 5-star reviews for BTB, two of which mentioned me by name (WTF?). See attached screenshots. It's really shady that BTB had their employee leave fake 5-star reviews. Let's be clear. I did not engage in any of the behavior Mikhail's ranting about. I did, however, notice that they had gotten my drink order wrong, and asked them to correct it. It wasn't busy, and this happens all the time. The costs of remade (or spilled) drinks are built into the profit margins of any stable business (especially at BTB prices). Mikhail did not actually hear me order. I saw him making drinks a couple of feet away while I was ordering. Basically, an employee who wasn't even there during the transaction is harassing a customer via Yelp using multiple fake accounts. Mikhail went out of his way to make a bad experience worse even days later, and personally messaging me multiple copies of his same incoherent ramblings is beyond creepy and inappropriate. No customer should expect to be treated like this by an employee, ever. EDIT 2: I spoke with BTB manager Elana about Mikhail's messages to me. She said that he had removed his reviews addressing me and would not be harassing me further. As of 11AM on 7/8, his review is still up, and Mikhail is still working at BTB, and was not disciplined. BTB apparently prefers to create fake social media accounts to harass customers who leave bad reviews, rather than being polite to customers or serving food that tastes good. read more

I happened upon this little place while meandering around on my own before all of my friends woke up on Labor Day weekend. Any place with baked goods is automatically going to earn my patronage -- especially when the baked goods look as delectable as the ones here! I had a fennel ricotta muffin, which is a combo I've never seen before. It didn't taste much like fennel (a good thing, in my book) and was just very moist. I wish I would've picked up some of the other carb-filled goodies. Also had fresh pressed juice (watermelon, cucumber, lemon). So fresh! Great to have first thing in the morning. I probably would've given this place 4 stars except I found it to be rather expensive. Now, yes, I know this is on Martha's Vineyard...so I should expect that, but c'mon...it was around $10 for juice and a muffin. read more

As others are noting, the burger is bad. Really, really bad. Billed as a "smash" burger, it is not smashed. It's just a frozen burger patty that is massively over-cooked. The salad was also sub-par. I don't know what they were going for with their dressing and grilled under-ripe peaches, but it didn't work. We had breakfast here on a weekday. The coffee is excellent, the best I had in Martha's Vineyard and comparable to my favorite coffee in NY. For breakfast we ordered at the counter (1 cappuccino, 1 latte, 1 shakshouka and 1 slice of almond strawberry cake). You have to carry your coffee over but they will bring your food out when it is ready. Everything was excellent, the cake was so fresh it was still a little warm. They told us that a baker comes in at 5 am every morning and bakes everything from scratch. The shakshouka was great and we wanted some extra bread which they provided us with at no cost. read more

Located in the main/downtown area in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts- Behind the Bookstore is an adorable café/restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. I actually discovered this place because I needed to use the restroom and I stopped here. While I was waiting in line (for about 10 minutes-there's is only one restroom for everyone), I got a great chance to look around and see how charming this place was. Also, while waiting in line - I got to peek into the kitchen because the door was open. I could tell that one of the chefs was eating. I found this to be a little bit alarming and it sort of grossed me out. Eating, over food that is being made to feed to restaurant patrons didn't really sit well with me.The menu had some very healthy items on it as well as delicious coffee drinks. The outdoor seating is really cute and there was not a table available. You could tell it was a good mix of the summer locals and tourists. I ended up standing in line to get a coffee. I got a medium, dark roast iced coffee and it was delicious. I wish we had more time to sit down and enjoy the outdoor area and pick off of the menu, but I suggest going here for its Edgartown charm. I will be returning to eat some food, next summer! read more

Visiting Martha's Vineyard for the week. Came here due to a recommendation from a friend. The management is extremely rude and the servers are as well. I went back inside to get a packet of sugar for my coffee since they didn't make it very good and two of the servers gave me a nasty look and the manager proceeded to scream at me to get out. When we finally got a table outside we kindly asked after 5 minutes of standing if it could be cleaned off because it was dirty from the last customer that sat there. The server proceeded to snap at us and told us that we were very impatient. After this, they proceeded to get our order wrong and told us we were wrong and not them, only to take back their statement after seeing our receipt. Absolutely delicious selection of specialty lattes. I had the Orange Thyme iced with almond milk and it was probably one of the best coffee beverages I've ever had. Really disappointing. Ordered a cappuccino, paid and gave a tip. When barista put the cup on the counter for me, I saw a small 8oz cup that was 3/4's full. I asked about the cup size and why it wasn't in the 12oz cup. "Oh we put lattes in those, cappuccinos in the smaller." Hmmm. So I got 3ozs of coffee, 1oz of foam, and 2ozs of empty space for $5, and waited 5:30 to get it. Not even close to being worth it. There are no truly gluten free options here, but modifications were not too difficult and the staff were helpful. My coffee is delicious (I tend to the hypercritical with coffee) the outdoor space is calming and open/fresh like a little oasis. We ordered the Shakshuka-Baked Eggs and the Fried Egg BLT (which they can do in a bowl) and both were superb. Note- the coffee is SO good that I ordered too many and am getting cracked out. This cafe is in a very cute location but has pretty limited seating so have a backup plan if they are full. We went here for breakfast, I got the avocado and egg sandwich which a matcha latte and my friend for the Shakshuka with a lavender latte. My Egg sandwich was good but would of liked a fried eggs over scrambled but they didn't seem open to substitutions. I tried a bite of the shakshuka and that was delicious, will be my top choice next time I go back. Both the lavender and Matcha lattes were delicious as well! The menu is more limited but I think that is to be expected for a smaller cafe. I couldn't believe that the owner was sitting and chatting with only one person at a table for 5 at the height of the morning rush, while the poor hostess was struggling to find people tables. The whole time I was there, someone else sat alone waiting at a table for 5 for more than 40 minutes before any of his companions arrived. Both showed a lack of consideration for other guests.
