Every time I make a trip to Akron, I have to eat at Belgrade Gardens. No one makes fried chicken (and fries) like they do. My brother and I did take out; the wait was long because they are always busy, and I ordered there, but the wait is always worth it. Their bread is fresh every time. The workers are busy, yet take time to be kind. I got the feeling they worked quickly in order to cut the wait time. All in all, one of my favorites! read more

I personally think this is absolutely the best chicken around. The hot sauce is fabulous. The coleslaw sweet and tangy. The fries are fantastic and the staff is always friendly and courteous. We used to go quite often and recently went twice. Generally one meal doesn't set the tone for us, everyone has off days. However, the visits were the same both times. The grease seems dirty/highly overused, prices are extremely high for the quality of food you receive. We of course did the chicken dinners and one fish dinner and for 3 people was close to $90 with tip. The people are friendly, but servers stretched very thin with the amount of tables they service. The chicken was underwhelming and under seasoned. The fries were decent but both the chicken and fries were so greasy, I got sick from it. One of the worst dining experiences we've had in quite a while. My husband is almost 6'4", and they sat us in a booth that was so small, we literally knocked knees, and stepped on each other's toes the whole time. My husband almost couldn't walk when we left because he was so cramped up. Service was very slow. Took forever for our meals to come. Portions were small. I ordered grilled chicken breast, and it was so overcooked, it was like chicken jerky. We ate our meal without anything to drink, because our waitress never came back for drink refills. My husband's fried chicken pieces were very small, and way over priced for what he got. When my husband paid our check, he waited for the host to ask how our meal was, but he never did. We think he knew things weren't very good, because several other diners around us were having a similar experience that day. Our check number on 7/23/24 was #31, table 113. But $20 for Wingdings with no sides is a lot. The paprikash was $18 and included 2 sides... but the dumplings were greasy and the sides were small. A large side of fries is $7. It's a carton of fries that aren't even that great tasting. They should be $4. The sides are $2.50-$4 and very small for the price. The hot rice was REALLY spicy and didn't have much actual flavor. (And I like spicy stuff!) The workers all were talking bad about customers when I came in and had to wait for my carryout. They didn't seem happy to be there and were discussing what customers said loud enough for anyone to hear. They also took forever to answer their phone when I ordered my carryout. i've been eating here since i was basically an infant, i'm 15 now and live in orlando. whenever we visit this place is a MUST. the service is amazing, all of the workers are the sweetest and you have no idea how refreshing it is to still see the same faces serving you after 15 years. we always order the chicken dinners and it is delicious. the breading is just enough to not overwhelm the taste of the chicken, and i'd honestly just eat the breading if they offered it! yes the environment is a bit out dated, but they haven't changed anything since they opened which gives it that cozy feel. overall, you can't go to ohio without going to belgrades! read more

I grew up having the chicken dinner and remember it fondly. However, I went last week with my sister and was very disappointed. I got chicken paprikash and it came out very greasy with dumplings that looked like chicken skin. It was luke warm. Sorry, I don't get good reviews for this place. I called for take out. They were not particularly busy as testified by the mostly empty lot and literally 4 people that arrived in 1/2 an hour. A young English speaking woman picked up the phone and when I said I wanted to order take out asked me to wait a moment. I agreed. I waited on the phone for ten minutes while I heard 1/2 a dozen staff people speaking to each other, laughing , joking obviously not busily working, ignoring the waiting customer on the phone. Finally I figured they forgot about me . No they hadn't as when I said "hello" loudly they all started laughing and commented that "now she's saying hello". Haha what a bunch of unprofessional toddlers including the one foreign speaking woman I assumed was an owner. No answer still so I hung up. By then we were at the restaurant. My husband went in and attempted to order( dumb on our part, should have gotten the hint it was a dump and gone else where) . The woman spoke limited English( or pretends to) and couldn't seem to understand anything he said. Claimed they didn't have takeout meals just ala cart with a nice high upcharge. 1/2 an hour wait with , again, limited other customers. When he walked back in at the appointed time , the food was ready but lukewarm, in the same bag as the pie with whipped cream that was melted due to the other items it had been bagged with obviously some time before . Warm coleslaw , but cold hot sauce, green beans and mashed potatoes . The chicken is awful. While it's more like a corn meal crust, the crust was not crisp it was overcooked and hard outside while soggy and gummy next to the meat . The chicken thigh had globs of uncooked chicken fat under the breading , should have been removed before breading obviously. The pie had meringue . We had asked if the pie was whipped cream rather than meringue topped. They said "whipped cream "and squirted the now melted whipped cream over the meringue evidently thinking we wouldn't realize it. Against a backdrop of peeling wallpaper and color sketches of Serbian peasants, the tension built as we anxiously awaited the "world famous" Barberton Chicken. You see, we'd assembled a mixed group of Cleveland East and West Siders, and trekked all the way to this notorious establishment on the basis of rumors of delicious fried chicken - and particularly, a mention on NPR's Splendid Table and an enticing article on the Wikipedia. "Come On Eileen" played on the thin ceiling speakers - although not quite loud enough to drown out the priceless conversations of the Barberton locals in the nearby booths. Barberton Chicken, we'd been told, is a varietal of chicken fried in lard - producing a unique breading and juicy meat. A special "hot sauce," served on the side, is comprised of tomatoes, rice and peppers. Our fellow Sunday diners comprised a rag-tag assortment of elderly post-Brimstone-sermon couples in cheap suits and dresses, Joe Sixpack in his XXL collegiate T-shirt and the expected hillbilly extolling the virtues of synthetic motor oil. (Two hundred fifty thousand miles in a Chevy minivan? Believe it!) Joe Sixpack loudly proclaims "once you go black, you'll never go black" (when it comes to selecting your poultry, of course.) Our first course is a tart, vinegar-drenched cole slaw. (When we'd ordered, several of us had taken the Wikipedia suggestion that the true lineup is chicken, hot sauce, cole slaw and french fries - not realizing that the cole slaw is brought out first, as if it were a salad course) This is tasty, but certainly not for those who prefer a sweet slaw. Accompanying the starters was a basket of soft bread (white and light rye) - but, unfortunately, no plates on which to place the bread. Napkins it is. When the time comes for the main event, we're unfortunately underwhelmed. The soft, chewy breading on the smallish pieces of fried chicken is reminiscent of carnival food - corn dogs, anyone? Although it wasn't greasy, it did leave several members of our party somewhat sick to the stomach. One diner observed that her piece of chicken was tough - another commented that it didn't live up to its reputation, and we ought to have just driven to Amish country if we were going to travel east for an unhealthy bird. The "hot sauce" is really the most memorable thing here. Much like the innard of a stuffed pepper, this bowl of flavorful rice, tomatoes and peppers can be enjoyed either like a thick soup (with the provided spoon) or, as we preferred it, lathered on the otherwise bland chicken in an effort to kick it up a bit. In the beverage realm, it should be noted that the "Belgrade Gardens" root beer isn't particularly satisfying - the private label brew is mostly high frutcose corn syrup and doesn't stand out from the crowd. read more

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to try the Three Classic Barberton Chicken Houses in town in one afternoon. The rules: one breast, one wing, and classic Barberton hot sauce. Three chicken houses go in, one comes out. Myself and my son & daughter signed up to get our issue not long ago. The fam dat chicken together stickin' together. I ain lyin. I'll say this from the jump: all three were not just good; they were EXCELLENT. Magic City knows bird. Clearly a piece of Americana that should be better known and loved on the level of Chicago pizza and Carolina BBQ. The words of Fall Out Boy come to mind about Magic City Fried Chicken, "It's not a scene, it's a GD arms race." From an extremely scientific sample of one, however, Belgrade Gardens stands as King of The Chicken Hill. Barberton Chicken (TM) has it's own Wiki. Legit. But the hallmark is a generous cut of the whole bird, and nothing but the bird, coated simply in breading not batter, unencumbered by 7 herbs and spices. Legend is lard frying is the rule. The sides are traditionally eastern Euro ethnic dishes, and only home made will suffice. Mad staxx of fresh cut fries, dumplings, and of course hot sauce. We're not talking Louisiana sauce. Barberton hot sauce is a rice dish with tomatoes, sauces, Hungarian hot peppers and paprika. Belgrade's Chicken came out frier to table hot, insanely crispy and not a hint of grease or old oil tint. So crispy. The white meat was juicy like a June blueberry. So phresh. So clean. The wing was simply tears-of-joy perfection. I've eaten wings from sea to shining sea. Local. The Lube. Zaxby's. BDub original. Anchor Bar. 'Scoe's in So Cal chasing that dragon. Even the famous Elmton near the YO. This was the Platonic Ideal of the Chicken Wing. The hot sauce at Belgrade was a cut above the rest. Homemade sauce from an onion, tomato, pepper reduction with a nice kick. Hate to say it, but White House and - gasp - even Hopican Garden, had a disappointing commissary Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee quality sauce. Boo. Ultimately it's about the chicken, and Belgrade is like the Ghost of Coach Greynolds running Popeye and The Colonel out of the chicken gym, and even out-dance Bojangles as if Breakin' 3: Chicken Boogaloo. The joint itself is adorbs. Straight up 1979 era family, clean as 2006 Taylor Swift music, decorated with "educational" Serbian materials. Like a tribute to Belgrade only missing a statue of Vlade Divoč. Its oddly placed in a neighborhood instead of business zoned. I am contemplating moving there. I ain lyin. Word is that Barberton was put on the map by Diamond Match back in the day day day. But to me there's no question that Belgrade set the fried chicken world ablaze. Don't @ me southern dudes, or we might have to remind you Billy Sherman was a Buckeye. You really can't go wrong ordering fried chicken in the Magic City so long as Mighty Wings don't make a comeback. It's hard for me to write this review for two reasons: 1- I'm not a huge fan of fried chicken 2- my family had hyped this place up for over a year First I will say that the decor is outdated. I would not say dirty- the floors, bathroom, tables were all clean. Our server was a delight and offered us samples of everything. Very attentive and friendly. She shared some of the restaurant history with us, which was very cool. The dumplings were so flavorful, the coleslaw was awesome and I did love the hot sauce (or hot rice, some called it) Barberton style chicken is good. It was moist, breading was crispy and it was not greasy. It just was not what I had expected. A little bland and the breading was very cakey, like a shake and baked corn dog.
