On the evening of Thursday June 16, 2016, I was part of a party of 8 having dinner at Belhurst Castle near Geneva, NY. The staff delivered the worst service we have ever experienced at any restaurant bar none. After one hour and fifty-five minutes we had still not received our entrées (all standard items from the menu) and the wait-staff provided no explanations nor apologies, despite our numerous inquiries, except to say that the order had been "put in". Once our main course had been served, at about the two hour mark, our waitress became scarce. All further service, including desert and the bill, were obtained only by my wife going to the hostess station and the main desk to find management personnel at about the two and a half hour mark. They made no apologies either and the bill, when finally presented, included their obligatory gratuity of 18%. read more

Came here after hearing about it for many years. It was a lovely experience. World-class? No, but for upstate New York, quite comfortable. We stayed in a room in Vinifera, with a fireplace and jacuzzi. Made good use of both amenities. Were pleasantly surprised at the two-person walk-in shower. The lake views were a definite plus. Staff was attentive and pleasant. Breakfast buffet was a cut above the usual. Another nice surprise. Dinner at Stonecutters was "pubby" food, which fit our mood. Lots of non-hotel guests eat at both restaurants, which tells a lot in my book. Second night's dinner at Edgar's was superb. Lamb was excellent and plentiful. Duckling was succulent and creatively prepared. We'll keep this one on our "special occasion" list. read more

Belhurst is a perfect place to stop for a wine tasting, because you basically get to have a glass of wine and walk around this amazingly beautiful grounds. I've heard friends say that they had problems with the event planning process for wedding, that the Spa is too expensive and the food is overpriced, but all I wanted was a $2.50 wine tasting and a pretty stroll. Isabella Salon Review: After reflecting back on my wedding held at Belhurst last May, I was reminiscing on the all details including my time at the Isabella Spa & Salon for myself and wedding party. We finally have all of our pictures back from our photographer and I can now really take the time to see how all the details turned out. First, I would like to say that the overall Belhurst wedding experience is top notch! The food was wonderful and it was so nice to know all the minor details were taken care of so I could really enjoy my own wedding! Secondly, after being in a few other weddings I now see how valuable the time with my girls getting around was. We all had out hair and makeup done in the Isabella Spa onsite at the Belhurst before the wedding. I even had my mom, flower-girl, grandmother and few other close family members come to get their hair done as well since you are right there. The spa had such a relaxing environment it took any pre-wedding nerves I had, right away. I even decided to have a little food spread for everyone there that was delivered to the spa from Edger's Restaurant. Best advice was to eat early on your Wedding Day! My stylists for my hair: Laurie, had done a pre-bridal with me about a month in advance. On the day of, I wanted to do a few changes to the up-do style. I was a little nervous making any change to the overall style the day of, but she reassured me that it would be fine, and it was and turned out to hold the whole night! My makeup was done by Ashley. Again I did a pre-bridal with her and came in bare faced for the test run. I showed her a few pictures of what I wanted to do for a classic/vintage look and she was able to take from each image to suit my face and skin tone best! On the Wedding Day, she was just as attentive to make me feel like a true bride.... and that lip stain that they use at the spa, even stayed on after kissing, eating, drinking and dancing! Each one of my bridesmaids brought in a few pictures of what they imagined for their hair and makeup and looking back now, each one had a style that perfectly reflected their personality. Everyone did a up-do style but each had its own flare. And even though the staff at the spa probably see a million brides a year; after I was all finished they all were giving me so many compliments, I felt like the first bride they had worked with! My time getting around with all my ladies at the Isabella Spa will forever be one of my favorite and most beautiful wedding memories! read more

My future husband and I had a very unfortunate experience here. We are newly engaged and Belhurst Castle was one of the first places we wanted to look. So, we went today to just look and get the feel of the place, no appointment but wanted to walk around and check it out. As I stepped into the ballroom I instantly thought "how beautiful" and could picture our reception being there. I looked to my left and there stood an employee so I said out loud "this is gorgeous, do you have an event here today?" With stacked chairs behind her she replied with "Yeah. And actually the ballroom is closed today" (with a snarky attitude), laughed and looked back down at her phone. Instead of offering to get more information at the desk, or even asking if I was looking for an event of my own she laughed in my face and made me feel like an annoyance for simply looking into the room. I immediately turned to my fiancé with a look of disappointment and shock and thought to myself "no way would I ever have my wedding here with staff who treat people like that" - What a shame. read more

I was expecting much more - had dinner at Edgar's. the service was okay. it took the hostess 8 min to come to the front desk and seat us (they were not slammed) so that kind of set the tone. I was actually watching the clock and was going to leave in 30seconds when she came up. She was the pretty brusque, like we were imposing. Our waitress was fine, nothing outstanding though. The food was okay, had the rack of lamb my buddy had a pasta dish. the food was served kinda crammed on a mid size dinner plate - good portion but definitely not "displayed". the scallop appetizer was overcooked and the escargot was pretty well drowned out by the other flavors. We stopped here for a wine tasting on our way to Corning. Only $2.50 to sample 5 wines. We returned on our way home to have dinner at Stonecutters tavern. We sat at the bar to enjoy the beautiful view of Seneca Lake. The bartender was very friendly and efficient. The house drink, Kelly's raspberry lemonade, is a good girl drink. We ordered the clam and corn chowder (delicious), fried calamari (nice sriracha aioli), and the Jenny Linde sandwich and muffeletta panini. We were very pleased with our meal and the service. The one disappointment is that the desserts aren't made in house. read more

This is for two different reviews: Wedding at Belhurst and for Isabella Salon I wish there were two different yelps so I could do 4 star for belhurst and 2 star for Isabella Salon. I will start with wedding: I had a wedding in August and absolutely loved the setting of belhurst. You could not ask for a more beautiful view of the lake and the castle was amazing. The food was great for day of (you get 4 different choices of entree which is great too). All in all costed around $1300 for 140 people and consumption bar. I have to give a shout out to Carmen because she is an awesome wedding planner. While she may not be great at getting back to you in a timely manner she more than makes up for it. She knows exactly what you need to know for the wedding, gives you checklists, and is extremely likable and hilarious. would definitely choose her again to work with. Now for the bad.. Isabella salon Since I was getting married at Belhurst I thought it would be nice if me and the bridesmaids/moms got our hair/makeup done there. Prices were comparable to other places around the area. For my look I wanted soft, hollywood waves and natural makeup. I had a trial a few months before the wedding. I showed multiple pictures to the hair stylist before she started and she said she could do it. I hve seen many instagram/how to videos for this hairstyle and I will say she was not doing it right. She started using a curling iron and just curled my whole head. At the end it just looked like she took a wand and there were all separate curls. i told her it wasn't the look i was going for at all. She looked back at the pictures and said it wouldn't look as good because I didn't have blonde hair. She then said I could come back for a different trial because she needed rollers and didn't have them there. I was a bit worried so I talked to the manager Ellen and she reassured me that the hair stylist could recreate any picture she was given. Fast forward to my next hair trial and the stylist said the rollers wouldn't work and she would need to put gel in my hair to achieve the look and by doing so I wouldn't be able to wear a veil. I wasn't ok with not wearing a veil so we just tried some half up/downs. She started curling my hair and immediately stopped and started combing one piece of my hair. She was combing it extremely hard and I had to hold my hair at the roots because she was yanking so hard. I asked her if she wanted me to comb through my hair first so it wouldn't knot. Then she said it wasn't a knot, wax had melted in my hair because somehow it was on the curling iron. I asked her to use water to try to get the wax out and she said it would ruin the curl. Who cares about the curl!! You melted wax and it hardened in my hair!!! Finally after much combing and hair being pulled out it was mostly gone. At that point I didn't trust this girl to do my hair and the half up dos were only mediocre at best. I called Ellen the manager the next day and told her I didn't want this hair stylist for my wedding. Ellen continued to defend the stylist and said I should stick with her because she "knows my hair" and then said she melted wax in my hair because she was trying to do the style I wanted. Ellen said that the stylist had been thinking about me ever since the first hair trial and had bought a bunch of products specifically for me. Thanks but no thanks for the guilt trip. She finally said she could give me a different stylist but was concerned about doing so. I said that was fine I would take anyone else. The next day I frantically searched for different hair salons around the area and found a great one (Bombshell--you can read my review there) so I wanted to cancel my reservation at Isabella. I also really wanted to cancel my bridesmaids because I had such a crappy time there. I called Ellen and the first thing she said was my deposit was nonrefundable and questioned why I didn't want to go there. I had to tell her all of the reasons again and she continued to defend the first hair stylist. At that point I was so sick of her business antics that I asked her what happened to the customer always being right? I told her she never even apologized for what had happened but just defended the stylist. She then said that no one had ever had any complaints about their salon before (which is totally untrue) and that they have only gotten good reviews. I told her that was untrue because I had read reviews that weren't too good and she said she wouldn't know because she doesn't read online reviews. Who doesn't read online reviews?!! It's 2016!! If she had just apologized I wouldn't have been upset but this was ridiculous. Finally after I said this she started apologizing profusely and it basically just annoyed me because it was totally fake. My bridesmaids ended up going here for hair/makeup and it was very dependent on stylist whether they liked their hair/makeup or not. Save yourself the time brides and go to Bombshell salon. read more

Beautiful grounds - but that's about it. We purchased via Travelzoo special for use by end of January. Stayed one night (Wed); place was pretty empty. As for empty as it was, one might expect staff to at least acknowledge guests (Staff made us feel as if we were intruding and wasting their time while we experienced wine tasting, gift shop, Stone Cutters for drinks. BTW, we purchased a case of wine and several other gifts, and still... nodda... no acknowledgment or thanks). Food at Edgars was awful and waaay overpriced; small portions; al-a-carte. Room was so-so (mediocre bed). Anyway, had it not been for the deal through Travelzoo, we would not have wasted our time at this place. Nice for a visit to walk the grounds, but if looking to eat and stay, go elsewhere. read more

Horrible brunch experience. I had gone a year ago when family came to visit and it was amazing so I decided to take some out of town guests again and I was embarrassed. Not worth the price at all. Food was obviously left out from breakfast and had not been refreshed. Bread was stale and cheese hard. The only thing fresh were the omelets because they were made to order. I really wanted this to be a good review - we stumbled upon Belhurst and decided to see if there was a vacancy. From the first, it was beautiful...but the 'castle' has no elevator and we had to struggle to carry our bags through the restaurant and up the stairs. We were in the Collins room, and there was no pilot light on the fireplace...we didn't even bother to call the front desk to have them re-light it, as it was about 80 degrees outside. There were indeed some bugs (beetles) in the room. Our 'room book' indicated that we could keep the slippers that were provided (what? where?! We saw no slippers) The wine spigot is a nice touch, but the wine in said spigot could've used improvement). The view from the lawn to the lakefront is pleasant, and the bed was comfortable. But it ended the moment we went to Edgar's, and this review is for them. We had an effusive waitstaff member, and we decided to buy a bottle of wine for our dinner. Our waitperson poured my husband a taste, but chose to serve the wine with her thumb inside the pontil and the bottle resting on two fingertips - and she promptly dropped the bottle in the middle of our table, spilling half the contents. After many apologies and moving us to another table, she promised to bring another bottle of the same wine to top off our glasses (we only got one glass each after the bottle was uprighted). Dinner was overpriced and ill-cooked. My rack of lamb was nice, but the potatoes underneath were overcooked, mushy, and swimming in grease. The carrot side-dish was simply split carrots put under the broiler for 30 seconds - so hard that they were completely inedible - not crisp-tender, but rock-hard and not easy to chew. My husband chose the pasta dish, and it was very overcooked, cold, and completely tasteless. Still waiting on our bottle of wine to come out, we suddenly got promises from the waitperson to 'just wait - I have a couple of special glasses for you to try.' Husband has been in the food industry for years, and knows that she was just waiting to see what leftovers came back to the kitchen in previous diner's bottles. We weren't even told the name of anything she set before us as 'tasting portions'. "Comped" free chocolate-dipped strawberries 'for our inconvenience', and then noticed that every other table had been given them, too. With the wine, our dinner was more than our room rate. Husband was too tired to take it up with them (it took them an hour to bring us our meal), but the next morning he was asked if everything was alright. He did not complain about our meal, even though he was very much entitled to...but the $30 wine issue stuck in his craw. They did comp us a bottle of the wine we bought the night before, but it made me wonder if Edgar's spends more time doing damage control and comping for mediocre-at-best food. Perhaps with a better chef....and a shorter wait for dinner, a more competent server (one who doesn't seem as if she's trying to pull a slight 'fast one' on you), I could give this place a better rating. It was romantic - but save your hard-earned shekels and do yourself a favor - eat elsewhere. read more

Health Hazard! We came in for Sunday brunch, I should have taken the fact that we waited for the hostess for over 10 minutes as a sign from the universe to leave, unfortunately we did not. Instead, a member of our party walked in and got the hostess to come out to the front and help with our reservation. We got a table by the window, a paint-splashed, dirty, stained window. The carpet smells and it is dirty, their window treatments are so outdated (not in a classy way) and dirty. The cobwebs in the corners are pretty intimidating, and are a clear sign of the carelessness of the property owners. After seeing this, we still stayed for brunch. Our server greeted us very pleasantly, took our order, delivered our drinks and we did not see her again until the end. When the coffee arrived it was lukewarm, once milk/cream was added, it became iced coffee. The mimosas, were premade in a pitcher so once they arrived to our table they were flat. We walked around the buffet to find very few appetizing items. The vegetable and fruit platters were freezer burnt and looked old, the cheese platter was matte in color with a little "sweaty" film on it. The smoked salmon platter was no where near cold, or even room temperature, it was placed right next to a heated chafing dish. The meats were no better, the carving station was pretty sad looking with clearly reheated, yet also cold, beef and very dry turkey breast. The scrambled eggs were in a heated chafing dish drenched in hot water, so you had two options: soaked warm eggs from the bottom of the dish, or cold dry eggs from the top. The waffles were lukewarm, very dry and hard. There was only one ladle to serve the different syrups with, so the mix of flavor was interesting to say the least. The mussels and salmon dish was bland and had a "funky" aftertaste. The garden salad had mixed, wilted greens. The tortellini with chicken in an Afredo-ish sauce was the only item on the buffet that was actually good. It was an overall terrible experience, the clear disregard for the guests' health baffles me. Therefore, we asked for our check and requested to speak to the restaurant manager. At this moment someone went and got our waitress who showed concern about our request, after explaining the situation she went and spoke to him, who never showed up to our table. Instead, removed 2 out of the 3 brunches from our food check, which was nice, but still never spoke to us. I do not understand how the NY state health department allows this place to continue to operate when they are serving mostly old food, at completely unhealthy temperatures, making it a perfect culture for bacteria to grow. Avoid at all cost, there are other-though very few-great places in the Seneca Lake-Geneva Area. read more

Where to begin? For several years, my husband has wanted to stay at Belhurst Castle in Geneva, NY. We finally had the opportunity August 3rd of this year, only to learn that the Castle had no rooms available and neither did the Vinifera (the addition right next door). The only rooms available were in White Springs Manor. After carefully "studying" the various rooms, we chose the Nicholas Room; which promised, and I quote, "fantastic thirty mile view overlooking grounds and Seneca Lake valley...." The only views you got from the room were of treetops. The lake was nowhere in sight. We also discovered we were the only occupants in this old, out of date musty building. It was spooky. We returned to registration to see if there had been any cancellations in the Castle or Vinifera. They were able to give us 2 nights in the Vinifera room 303. This building is only 10 years old and is in dire need of renovations. Our room did have magnificent views; but that's all it had. The sink was cracked, the frame around the sink falling apart, the towel rack fell when we put a towel on it, the shower for 2 only worked on one side with no water pressure, carpet was faded, the TV was from the '80s. The quality of the bedding and blankets were cheap quality and what you'd probably find in Motel 6. We had planned to have dinner at Edgar's; their famous restaurant. We decided to try it before. When the hostess was nowhere to be seen, we decided to seat ourselves only to be told we had to wait for the hostess. We should have taken that as a sign and left, we didn't. We went for breakfast and ordered oatmeal. The oatmeal wasn't even cooked. It was like eating uncooked quinoa. After that experience, we cancelled our dinner reservations. And for this we paid almost $600.00 for two nights. What a total disappointment. Think twice, no, several times before booking a room. When we voiced our feelings to the front desk, they took $100.00 off the bill without blinking an eye. Makes you wonder how many other guests have had similar experiences. This review is for wedding that just occurred at Belhurst. Bride & groom selected to have their wedding in large ballroom, in older part of Belhurst 2 years prior to their wedding. Signed contract with Belhurst wedding planner, Carmen B. stating wedding would occur in large ballroom. Parents of bride & groom went to food tasting several months prior to wedding & were brought in chosen ballroom by Carmen B. to see where DJ, dessert table, etc. would be set up. There was difficulty throughout planning stages with getting responses from Carmen B. Through emails, etc. then just ONE WEEK prior to wedding, Carmen B. Sends email to bride that their wedding needed to occur in smaller ballroom, one they had not signed for on their contract. This wedding planner promised another couple whose wedding was occurring same day the larger ballroom. Carmen B. said it could not be changed. Wedding planner said there was no documentation to support the room had already been promised to our son & future daughter in law. Couple met with Mr. Duane Reeder, owner of Belhurst. He entered the room thinking this couple had not requested the larger ballroom. This changed when signed contract & all the emails that had been sent were presented. We want possible future couples to know the lack of respect & honesty that was given. The wedding "had to be" in the smaller ballroom. The space was inadequate for nearly 200 guests. The dessert, gift tables were crammed into this room. This deserves no star rating as that even one star would be too generous. read more

This review is for Edgars. We have eaten at Stonecutters before and I would rate that restaurant at 4 stars. Edgars is another story. For my partner's birthday I decided to take him to the most "elegant" restaurant in Geneva. Too bad the food does not measure up to the scenery. We were seated promptly and our server was excellent. My partner ordered an appetizer of oysters and he thought they were very good. I ordered the calamari. I expected the usual rings and tentacles with a dipping sauce on the side. What I got was a mass of obviously frozen rings (no tentacles) covered in a mish-mash sauce that was really overwhelming. I guess the sauce was supposed to hide the poor quality of the calamari. (Sysco?). Worst calamari presentation and taste ever! For the main course I ordered the pre-fix dinner (soup, salad, entree, dessert) while my partner ordered one of the specials (a flatiron steak). My soup was inedible, some concoction of curry, leeks, ? that had the consistency of porridge. The salad, with a Stilton cheese dressing, was excellent and my pork chop entree was delicious. My partner's flatiron steak was supposed to have been rubbed in coffee and some other seasoning. It was cooked properly but nothing special. The cheesecake dessert was good. So, it sounds like the kind of hit and miss meal you can get at any number of restaurants in the area. The only difference is that this meal cost , including a 20% tip for great service, $150.00 (no wine or liquor). If they want to charge that kind of money they need to provide a complete experience. So, in the future, we will confine our Belhurst Castle visits to Stonecutters. read more

Worst $300 + a night hotel I have ever stayed in. Don't waste your money! You are better off at the Hampton or Ramada right down the street. The rooms are run down and not well cared for. Biggest issue we had was service - or a lack thereof. First night we asked for a couple extra pillows and they refused to provide them! Next day we went out in the afternoon and came back to find our room door propped open with the dead bolt lock, and no one around! No telling how long our room was unsecured. On top of that they had not finished cleaning the room. No clean towels and the bathroom was still dirty. We called the front desk 3 times and they NEVER finished cleaning the room. We had to beg to get them to bring clean towels so we could shower the next day. Could not get out of there fast enough. The restaurants are expensive and the food is terrible. Have had better experiences at the cheapest Motel 6. read more

Last night was the 4th time I have eaten at the Castle and the very last. Business associated were in town and each year enjoy staying and eating at the Castle. The service was as bad as it gets. The waitress had no personality at all and was very rude to the table staff trying to help her. She made it clear that she was a one person team to the rest of the staff. She had no interest in conversation what so ever and really did not care that we sat for 20 minutes waiting before she said anything to us. The only time she came to the table was when she had to, dropped off the goods and left. To add, the 3/4 meals placed on the table were cold and over cooked. We could have sent them back but it would have been morning before we ate dinner, it had already been 3 hours sitting at the table without even eating the main course. As beautiful as the Castle is I would only recommend going there to sample wine. I would not recommend eating there and personally will not take clients there ever again. For the price you would think that the TV would be a flat screen and not an antique CRT, with a VHS still attached. Really? Needs massive upgrade. Only one reading chair and no light. Cheap, non-down pillows. In room Jacuzzi, that I would never use. If they can not invest in new furniture not fix dents in walls, I can only imagine what lurks inside the pipes of the Jacuzzi. Countertops have never been upgraded to stone just old formica. Furniture falling apart. I would expect these things in a $90 to $100 per night motel but not at the prices charged by the Belhurst Castle. We ate lunch at the pub and had to send salad back, as the lettuce from a bag was rotten. We ate dinner at the Edger and the food was excellent but pricey. Service was good only initially the waitress disappeared at the end for 20 min. We will never be staying here again. We stayed at the Aurora Inn the night before for less of a price and were amazed at the quality of everything including the food. read more

I got married at Belhurst and while the scenery was magnificent, Carmen, the wedding coordinator was horrific! Just to give some highlights of trying to plan with her...a lot of times we would try to contact her and she wouldn't get back to us for a week. Sometimes it took my mother-in-law to call her to get her to contact us back. We didn't even know what they were serving at our wedding until the day before because she never got back to us as to whether our choices were ok or within budget. Carmen wasn't even the one to seek us out to let us know! We had to find her and she was setting up another wedding in a ballroom and told us she could kick us out because it was someone else's wedding. There was no one in the ballroom and all we wanted to know was what we were eating for our wedding day! She also would confuse us with other couples getting married there and think she told us information that she actually never told us! On top of the frustrations of her being incompetent, the top of our wedding cake was lost and she didn't even have an ounce of professionalism in her to respond to my emails about it!! All in all, Carmen was the biggest stressor in my wedding planning and she should not be working at a place that has weddings so frequently. She is not capable of handling it and is losing business because of it. A few of my friends were considering Belhurst for their weddings after mine and I advised against it. It's not worth dealing with Carmen!! There are so many other places in that area with kind, helpful wedding coordinators but Belhurst is not one of them! read more

The view is stunning and the food, at Stonecutters, is very good. The problem we had was with a server. We purchased food and drinks at the bar and brought them outside to enjoy the view. After about an hour, as we were getting up to leave, and were stopped by the server/bartender who wanted to know if we took the receipt. Apparently she didn't have her copy (her mistake). My husband started to empty his pockets looking for the receipt and found the customer copy. She said "fine" and walked away, no apologies or explanation. I felt like I had been accused of walking off without paying the bill, so I looked up my account on line and saw that the charge had gone through. We went back and showed the server who continued to respond in a cool and unfriendly manner. I complained to the manager who said she would look into it but implied that we misinterpreted the server's actions. I think that the serving staff needs to be trained in appropriate etiquette when dealing with customers. I will definitely go back, but hope to have better service. read more
