Wow... what a shock. I have been going to Bell Alterations since I was in 2nd grade. I went back after returning to The Valley and was shocked. There is NO pricing listed anywhere. While the alternations are done well (hence the 2 stars) the price is astronomical. I have a unique perspective in that I do have experience in the garment industry (sewing, patternmaking, etc) so I know what these alternations involve. I had to get a dress hemmed and didn't have time to do it myself, and the alternations were more expensive than the (relatively well-fitting) dress! Just so, so disappointed, and it's a shame to see that this is happening to a lot of people. read more

Terrible service and the owner is extremely rude. She wanted to over charge me for a very simple job (literally sewing square velcro onto 15 jacket. 4 lines with the sewing machine) and then wouldn't agree put the jackets back into the plastic sleeves (which was not difficult to do - the plastic sleeves were huge. Jackets could just be shoved back in very easily). I had very carefully designated each jacket size to specific people in my company, that is why I wanted the jackets to stay with the sleeves. She is lazy, rude and apparently didn't want to make nearly $200 on a job that probably takes an hour. Never going back here and I recommend you don't go here if you're looking. I went over to Prestige Cleaners after that and the woman was extremely friendly and was happy to do the job within my budget and even offered to hang the jackets up and label them for me with the proper names and sizes. read more

There are a LOT of places that do alterations in Woodland Hills, particularly on Ventura. And, yes, this is yet another one. Bell's has a larger storefront with a number of seamstresses working inside. I've come by several times to have some shirts altered (mostly taking the sleeves off shirts, or something of the sort). The proprietor always listened carefully to my requests and followed them to the letter. For minor alterations, garments will typically be returned within a couple of days. And the cost is very reasonable. One of the things that I appreciate about this place is that they used a stretch stich when I brought in materials made out of jersey (i.e. t-shirts). Since at the time I knew next to nothing about sewing, I didn't know about the different types of stitches that were used. Previously, when I'd had t-shirts altered, the thread would eventually snap when I stretched the seam too far....the seam would still be good for a while, but it would eventually unravel. With stuff I've taken here, that has not been a problem. Recommended. read more

This is my go to place for any type of alternation. I've been going here for at least 6 years now and they always get it right. Ok, I had 1 time where I had to take something back to be tweaked and they were on it. They made the quick fix by the next day. I've taken everything from jeans to formal dresses here and always comes back perfect. I do think the prices can be a bit high on some things like full skirts or more detailed alterations where sides have to be taken in but I just think this is one of those areas where you get what you pay for. Brides Beware!!!!! I took my wedding dress for here for alterations and pressing and had a horrible experience. When the dress was finished I went to pick it up and found a large (hand sized) dirt stain in the front as well as what looked like makeup near the waist. The own began to scrub my dress with a rag and then tried giving it back to me with the stain still on it! I was upset and then she tried to tell me wedding dresses are never perfect that even though they are new there are always stains on them!!!! Shocked that this had happened she told me she would send it to the cleaner. When I went to pick it up a week later I wanted to check out the entire dress and thank god I did because there were dirty streaks all down the back of the dress. It looked as if dirty water had dripped all over the dress. I was so upset that they had done this and again she tried to tell me wedding dresses are always dirty!!! She said she would again send it to the cleaner. I questioned the fact that the dress was wrinkled and not pressed which I was paying for and she told me that she won't repress the dress that she wants to be done with the dress and won't charge me for pressing it!!!! If all of this wasn't bad enough during the wedding several of the beads and even the buttons down the back fell off and little strings that looked like fishing string were hanging out!! The customer service and quality of service here are terrible and I wouldn't want any bride to go through what I did. read more

I started to go to Bell alterations when Jong first started. No problem ...the work was perfect and wonderful service. The new ownership is terrible. My expensive dress did not come out as promised. I will never go back nor will I recommend this place to anyone.I don't even think that they altered the dress as it seemed to fit the same way as when I brought it in. I was told I was getting a credit and then another phone callfrom the owner to tell me she needed to talk to her partner. Bottom line is there is no credit. I was offered to redo the dress but why would I go to a place that messed up the first time. I miss Jong. How anyone goes to this place is beyond my comprehension. I disputed part of the overpriced charge and just found out that this merchant replied, in a handwriting that was difficult to decipher, so, Chase paid it. I have been coming to Bell for 15 years and their quality and customer services has slid WAY down. I brought in a circular skirt to have taken in and it came back with one side 3 inches longer than the other side. (It was not that way when I brought it in; it was merely too big around the waist.) When I came back for a redo, I was told it was "new work" and I was to be charged an ADDITIONAL $16, after paying $10/$12 for the original alteration. When I said that wasn't the right thing to do, the owner argued with me and made derogatory comments about the skirt. I don't care if she doesn't like the skirt, she should have fixed it the right way the first time and been apologetic that I had to bring it back in and absolutely should have redone it for free. Ultimately, after repeating her "new work" argument several times, she begrudgingly didn't charge me. There was a time that I would have recommended Bell; NO LONGER! read more

Completely agree with Jennifer S -- the prices are a bit high, but nothing absurd, and so far for me the quality has been great. I also have had a less-expensive alterations place (within a dry-cleaners) ruin a suit, which is why I spend a little extra to go here. They've done a good job with jeans but also more complex alterations. I had tuxedo that needed serious changes one week before the wedding, and they did a great job in only a few days. I am intrigued though by others who say they've experienced better -- I'm constantly getting things altered, so if you have a tip for a better alterations place, I'm all ears!!!! read more

I used to come here often to get my clothes alterations. They WERE great. I don't know if they have change owner or have a new girl working, it was terrible. I went in to get my curtain fix, a simple process. The counter girl would not tell me how much she would charge "only to say it would be very expensive" and that it would be 2 months process. I was a little confused as to why it would take so long and why she couldn't give me a price. I proceed to go over the request 3 to 4 more times with her only for her to reply to me "oh, you want me to do it right". She definitely makes me feel like she was doing me a favor. Again, why would you say that to your client? I didn't know that "doing it wrong" was even an option. Needless to say, I took my curtain and went somewhere else. I'm glad I did. I had a little Coco Chanel style black dress that I'd had for 15 years and I've been desperate to replace it. I had looked everywhere for the same simple but elegant style without any luck. Finally I went to the local fabric store to see if they could recommend a dress maker that could possibly replicate the dress. Without hesitation two different employees said "BELL ALTERATIONS". I went to see "Jong" at Bell Alterations and she took a look at the dress and said no problem! She quoted me what I though was reasonable price and told me how much fabric to buy. I took my daughters' prom dress to get altered 2 weeks ago. By accident I thought that the dress would be ready a week early and went in. When I went in she explained that I had must have misunderstood her on the date and it was next Thursday. At that time I noticed that the dress was hanging on a rack in front of the shop without any garment bag covering it, which it did have when I left the dress. I pointed this out to her and she stated that it would be fine with the other uncovered prom dresses. We went in today to pick up the dress. When my daughter tried on the dress we noticed that there were large dirty wrinkle marks on the lower front portion of the dress. The dress is a very light turquoise color and its was very noticeable. Now, I did examine the dress very carefully when I purchased it and the when the fitting was done. This dress cost me a lot of money and there were no marks nor dirt on it, I know this for a fact! When I asked her about it she stated that it was like that when she did the fitting. I again stated that the dress was not like that and she stated in a higher voice that it was. I paid the $34 dollars just to get the dress back, which now I have to pay $18 dollar to get cleaned. I would've fought with the women if I thought it would made a difference be honestly my time is more important to me. I also did tell her I would not returning to her store, which didn't seem to bother her much. Well, here is the thing I will be telling my whole family and friends and anyone who reads this review. DON'T RISK YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!! read more
