I had a more complex case, but she was able to help me achieve great results without wearing any complicated contraptions, and my case was completed in a very reasonable time. Never thought I'd say this but I'm (almost) glad I didn't wear my retainers after my first round of braces in high school. The Bella Smile team @ Page / Hayes Valley location showed me what care, consideration and hospitality really mean. After checking out a few other orthodontists in the downtown area that weren't as impressive, my girlfriend recommended I check Bella Smile because she was satisfied with their free consult back in 2023. The philosophy at Bella Smile is to not remove any teeth, so they put in an expander to make sure there would be space for her new teeth to come in. In phase one, after the expander, my daughter chose Invisalign, which was a wonderful process, and her teeth went from crazy scraggle tooth to perfection. She ended up having to do a phase two because not all of her teeth had fallen out yet, but once she had lost all her teeth she got her braces on and within the year she was done and now has a gorgeous smile. Bella Smile's staff is incredible and so nice, I would go here even though my insurance doesn't even support it anymore

It's now been a few years since I completed my experience and I now need a replacement retainer set as the current set is cracking. Contacted the office and was told a single replacement set (with no changes or scans required) would be $550. Fine, that's a business decision you are welcome to make. I then asked for a copy of my digital scans (which should be part of my patient records) and was told it is their policy to not provide these to patients. That's not OK. Your retainer will eventually degrade/crack and you'll need to replace it. You'll be on the hook for hundreds or thousands of dollars moving forward just to keep your teeth in the same position that they currently are. read more

I honestly have been thinking about this review for years and decided that I wanted to let anyone who is deciding on getting Invisalign or braces learn about my experience. I had a minor bite adjustment that really did not require any orthodontics but I wanted to move forward with it because my middle line was not aligned. Dr. Garnett was the one who saw me and proposed a year-long treatment, split into two sets of trays. I did my treatment from Sept 2017 to Oct 2018. There was a prepayment for my plan so I did not want to back out at any point even though after the first half of trays I felt like my teeth were perfectly aligned. The second half is what I think ruined my face. My teeth have been pulled back so much that it has changed my face shape. Not only has it caused my nose to look bigger when I smile because my teeth have been pulled back, my entire chin is shorter as well. I did not know orthodontics could do this, and I really wish the doctor would have said or provided a visual of the changes my face would have. Further, my profile looks different and retracted as well. This has also worsened my TMJ issues because my tongue does not have enough room in my mouth versus before and I often bite my tongue now during my sleep and get extreme headaches. I really wish I did not do this treatment or should have listened to my gut instead of being pushed to follow a plan that I probably did not need at all. Thousands of dollars and lifetime of medical and confidence issues. It really has given me a lot of pain and agony. Additionally, I had gone back to the doctor a year or so ago addressing my current concerns and I was rushed to have another treatment plan laid out for me for another six months! The office is nice and there's great pedigree but I definitely feel medically gaslit during my time here / and I wish I was forewarned about the changes orthodontics could do. I discovered Bella Smile through some friends who had used her services for their Invisalign in SF. They all raved about her practice, her staff and her office. I decided to check out for myself what all the fuss was about. I didn't think I needed Invisalign b/c I thought my teeth were okay, despite some mild crowding. What I didn't realize that was that crowding would likely lead to more plaque buildup and possibly gum issues. My challenge is that I didn't want to go through the normal length of time to do Invisalign so thank god I found Bella Smile! Both Dr. Garnett and Dr. Mahood helped fix my crowding and overbite over the course of 9 months (shaving off 1/3 of the time with the Prolon process) I will admit that this whole process was very daunting as I wasn't sure about how to manage the trays, the cleaning solutions, and just living with it day to day, but the entire staff was always helpful whenever I had questions, and if there were ever any last minute issues. I inadvertently lost one of the hooks on my teeth and Dr. Garnett's staff was super accommodating me and seeing me inpatient same day to help me solve my problem. The whole team, from the front desk to Dr. Garnett and Dr. Mahood provide a deep level of attention and patient care that I have not seen in an of the other doctor offices I have on my roster (and I have a lot of doctors I see). Someone once told me, "you should always strive to be, a better version of yourself." It may've been the perfectionist Virgo in me, because when I walked into work one Monday, my co workers exclaimed in surprise: "but, you don't NEED Invisalign!" Cosmetically, maybe not. The decision to get Invisalign was to correct my bite and straighten my bottom teeth which you can't really tell from first glance. I would've comparison shopped but with favorable reviews on yelp (and recommendations from hubby's colleagues) I decided to go to Dr. Shen's practice. During the consultation, you'll be given the low down on what Invisalign is, x rays taken, pointers on how to take care of your teeth, go over payment plans, etc. The consultation is $450 (from 2017 price) which can be applied towards your plan should you choose to get yours done here. With gleaming credentials from Stanford and Harvard, you can be assured the best orthodontist in SF has got you covered. The initial weeks of wearing Invisalign will be uncomfortable (some side effects even include headaches) and if you have to wear rubber bands, you must wear it for the recommended 20-22 hours a day, even in your sleep. There were many times I've woken up to sore jaws those early weeks, but all in the name of perfection, right? :p My Invisalign course would've only lasted 1 year, but we had also gotten married the same year, so I had to get my attachments temporarily removed for the wedding, which pushed back my course for another 3 months. Nevertheless, the consistency of care that I've received from Dr. Shen and her assistants are top notch. They're on time, professional and overall, really pleasant to deal with. You should like your orthodontist because you will see them a LOT. I just finished my last wire check with Dr. Shen and I'm honestly bummed that I won't get to see her anytime soon. I am very upset with the service and communication at Bella. I wanted to expedite my Invisalign since I need to work on my implant as soon as I got parts of my teeth straighten. I signed a contract and sent in my check immediately after my initial consultation and was told the next day they are ordering my first set of tray and to come back in 4 weeks. I changed my business and personal trips around to attend the said appointment. A few days prior to this appointment, I got texts and emails about my upcoming appointment. But the day before the appointment, I got a called from the front desks saying they did not order my trays and had left me a few voicemail with questions a few weeks ago. [I DID NOT GET A VOICEMAIL] The office never even tried to call me after the voicemail to connect with me leading me to believe I still had the appointment. I no longer want to use use their services but they've billed both of my insurance and cashed my $5k out of pocket check - and they even ordered my Invisalign trays. Now, I have to deal with getting the refund back from Bella and deal with insurance refund so I can still get Invisalign done elsewhere. And as many know, dealing with insurance companies are the worst. read more

Dr. Shen is amazing! I had orthodontics pretty much my entire life...I was left with an open bite I was told I could close with invasive jaw surgery. After meeting with surgeons it was determined the surgery might not be a permanent fix and I decided against it. Years later, in my early 30's I went to Dr. Shen to inquire about options and she told me she has successfully fixed open bites with invisilign. I did the treatment and many years later (about 6 and half years) my open bite has not returned and teeth look great. Dr. Shen is the best. I now live 6 hours away and wait until I visit SF for any ortho questions. Would not trust anyone else. read more

UPDATE: Since my review below, I bumped up my rating a star. I personally got a call from Dr.Bella soon thereafter. She answered all my questions, apologized for the below, & was going to address some of the issues with the staff. I was not expecting a call personally from her that same day, as it was around 8p! This showed me how much she truly cares for her patients. Previous review below: First the pros: 1) 5 stars for Dr. Bella as she was referred to me by someone I trust. Dr.Bella's education in her specialization and Invisalign knowledge is reputable. 2) The office is super clean, covid safety implemented, & the staff is really nice. 3) initial consultation was at least 1hr. long & they were very thorough, answered my questions, and Dr.Bella spent time talking to me. Here's why I gave low ratings : 1) I decided to move forward with my treatment. The person on the phone scheduled me for 2 visits. I went for the first visit and found out I didn't even need to go in! They were going to do X-rays and scans. You'd think they would look at my chart & see this was done already. So I wasted time off from work and waiting in the lobby to have nothing done. 2) on the 2nd visit, I found out I needed tabs on every single tooth! I was told during my consultation it would be on a few teeth not EVERY tooth. 3) I saw that the invisalign said 29 trays. I asked the assistant working on me (I'll avoid saying their name), "Is 29 all the trays I'm gonna get?" She told me "Yes, but it'll actually be 26 as 3 are refinement trays". I told her that was great news bc I was told by the ortho that the process would take 12-18months. I told her there's 52 weeks in a year and I only need 29 trays!? So I'll be done mid 2022! . Their reply was "Oh is there 52 weeks in a year? I didn't know that". 4) During the treatment, the assistant was pressing down on my teeth for something and she was pressing down on one tooth and the instrument slipped and jammed up into my gum. They kept apologizing. Luckily, I was fine. 5) They gave me a "Goodie bag". I asked about my VPro. You get this if you pay in full (and it's $$$). If I didn't remember to ask about this, they would've forgotten to give this to me. 6) Dr.Bella mentioned "Bite Bumps/turbos" to help with overbite; however, I was NOT told that this would change my ENTIRE eating habit for a year!! I went home and had meal prepped salads for the whole week and had to give all my salads away! I couldn't chew at all with those things bc your teeth don't touch! So you can't grind your food! I called the office thinking they did something wrong and the person on the phone said, "I'm sorry they should've told you, that for the first week, it's best to have a liquid/soft food diet"; and that I''ll get "use to it after a week". She told me to call in a week if anything. Also, I inquired about the 29 trays. The person on the phone said I would need to come back in when the trays are almost done. The doctor will scan and reevaluate how many more trays I will need from there. I told her that's not the same info the assistant told me. 7) I get a follow up text from office, 2 days later around 9am, asking how I was doing and that I could text back or call the office. I texted back. No word. I text about the bump bites around 3pm. No word. Weekend comes, Monday comes, and still no word. I did so much googling over the weekend on these "Bite turbos" that I got my answer. I didn't even know they were called "Bite bumps/turbos" until I googled! I'm trying to stay positive and focus on the end result! All I can say is that the staff needs to be more prepared/organized or educated. When I worked at the doctor's office years ago, I would review charts to make sure everything was there for each patient, and we had to return messages that same day. In addition, I should've had a more experienced assistant working on me for my very first visit. I was given wrong information and got the instrument whacked on my gum. I hate that I'm writing this review, & wish I could give 5 stars; but this was my experience within the past few days. read more

I've been insecure about my crooked teeth since middle school and finally decided to get braces during Covid after two decades of coming up with excuses (I can't work with a mouth full of braces, I don't want to pull two teeth out, I can't afford it, now's not a good time, etc.). I found Dr. Bella while searching for before and after cases of severe crowding like mine. On her website, there are pdfs and videos of 50-150 cases (most ortho offices post 5-15). And I found a video of her presenting her winning case in the 2016 Invisalign Shootout. She seemed experienced, skilled and optimistic - a rare combination in any profession. I have been under treatment with Dr. Bella for a little over a year now. She's treating me with Invisalign, propel, and ipr (no extraction tho I'm missing one lower teeth from a previous incident). The office staff (shoutout to Shalina who puts up with my multiple questions and calls) and her ortho assistants have been helpful and nice to me. Dr. Bella has been straight to the point, adjusting on the fly based on my feedback, and trustworthy through all my appointments. Five stars bc there's no such thing as a perfect place (so what's the point of saving it?) and this 'small' business does a superb job of balancing patient care (esp during Covid) and staying in business. I'm envious of people who live locally. I fly in once a quarter from Boston bc I went to about 10+ ortho offices in Boston and clearly Dr. Bella has the most experience, skills, and heart. I wanted to respond to the practitioner's reply. The issue isn't whether IPR is useful or whether less is used than other orthodontists. The issue is that this was too much for my case (as pointed out by a periodontist) and the position of my teeth/roots wasn't accounted for. Obviously, there is a limit to what should be done and that will vary based on the individual's mouth. Fixing the "triangles" isn't always appropriate. The last IPR was done at the end of the trays and my tooth was tipped over to account for the IPR. This tooth is actually not straight because of this but is on somewhat of a diagonal. This was definitely a rushed experience overall. read more

A glowing review for Bella Smile. My daughter became a patient in 2015 patient and had spacers and braces starting at the very end of 1st grade. She has work her nighttime retainers religiously since 4th grade and now has a perfect smile in the 7th grade. During my daughter's treatment, Dr Bella mentioned that she could fix my smile. My teeth had become completely mid aligned after two rounds of braces when I was a teenager, and a faulty permanent wire. She knew I would be a challenging case, but acknowledged she could fix my teeth with a 12-18 month course of treatment. I decided to start my Invisalign journey in fall 2020, since I knew we would be wearing masks for a while. This seemed like a much better alternative than jaw surgery. I needed orthodontic treatment before and after double jaw surgery for sleep apnea and had a wonderful experience with Dr Bella Shen Garnett! Out of all the orthodontists I consulted before my surgery, Dr Shen Garnett was the only one that offered to do the entire treatment using Invisalign. Everyone else recommended and pushed for metal braces, which I wanted to avoid. As promised, Dr Shen Garnett only used Invisalign to align my bite before and after the surgery. Right before the surgery, she attached small wires (she called it a surgical device) to my teeth. They are smaller and less unpleasant than braces but are required by the surgeon during the surgery. She actually developed this surgical device herself and my surgeon found it to be a great alternative to braces. The neat thing about this surgical device is that it allows the teeth to move and close your bite after the surgery as rubber bands hold your jaws together. As soon as I was able to open my mouth wide enough after the surgery (a few weeks after), Dr Garnett removed the wires again and continued to align my teeth and bite using Invisalign. My bite and teeth were perfect after the treatment was done. This whole process was life changing and I can't recommend Dr Bella Shen Garnett enough (especially for patients considering jaw surgery)!
