One of the ceiling tiles was mostly pulled off. Though the sides of the shower stall looked recently replaced, the floor of it was coming apart. More concerning, the door looked like it had been recently jimmied open, and the frame of the window screen was pulled out from the window (see photos)--it wouldn't be hard for someone to pull out the full screen, and if mosquitoes were out they'd be getting in your room. The dresser had a notice taped to it stating that one of its legs was broken--instead of printing out the notice, why not fix the leg? Some of the towels had a distinct yellow stain--we made a point of using the whiter ones. Be aware that the room door locks automatically, and you can't set it to stay unlocked--if you close it behind you, you will be locked out, so check to be sure you've got your key before leaving. We didn't learn this the hard way, but easily could have. At least it was quiet, and close to where we needed to be. I have seen worse, though next time I'm in the area, I'll be looking for something better.

I'll never forget the beautiful views of the boats and shops of Fishtown. Van's Beach is right outside the door, and the town is a close drive to Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and wine tasting on the Leelanau Peninsula. We opted for a balcony apartment room, which was a great decision. It is located off their upper deck and offers some additional privacy from the other visitors. The room had two beds - one downstairs and one in a cute loft area. It would be plenty of space for two couples to share, although noise could be heard throughout the room. The bathrooms and kitchenette are both recently updated and really added to our overall experience! We also loved that they are dog friendly, as it can be limiting to travel with pets at times and find convenient stays. While the price point to stay is similar to the prices of nicer hotels, we didn't experience quite the same level of service. As you can imagine with a smaller staff, they offer room cleaning only as requested and don't always have someone staffing the office. Overall, we didn't mind since we loved the location and the amazing views.

I don't mind that this is a more low-key, no staff present at night but when you wake up and you can't take a shower because the shower isn't draining and backing up with disgusting stuff and you call the overnight number and text it and no one even bothers to get back to you once the office is opened, it's a terrible way to start your day. Especially if you're celebrating some thing. Then, to be told they know that there are problems in there with the drainage and didn't care about disclosing it or even answering their phones and addressing the issue and just laughing it off is incredibly unprofessional and just unkind. Maybe they would like to start their day standing in disgusting water on their birthday. :/ I've read a lot of complaints about this lodge. This is such a beautiful location and a very special and unique lodge but you need new management. Desperately.

The beach is literally right outside the door and they have decent furniture outside to use. There is a super nice playground in walking distance for the kids. The room layout was fine and spacious, and the kitchen appliances seemed newer. The pool was also a bonus, although seemed over chlorinated and had lots of sand in the bottom. Towels seemed newer and clean. Bed was comfy. 2 balconies with nice views. The Cons: The entire place is DIRTY, old and unkept. Our room alone had stained and moldy curtains, the carpet was absolutely disgusting, splatters on walls and windows and a VERY nasty shower, which we did not use. Spiders and webs in the lamps. Cups in the cabinets had mouth marks all along the rims. The secondary bedroom door cannot be shut due to the bed being in the way. The walls outside of our door were stacked with what looked like new unboxed furniture as well as greasy old appliances. We were gifted this room due to original booking person not being able to make it last minute. I would not have been happy if I paid $400 for this place for one night, only for it to look the way it did. Especially with check in time being 5 and checkout being 11. Unfortunately, what happened during our stay--and the way it was handled afterward--completely changed my opinion. Our room had a significant fruit fly problem. This wasn't one or two flies that we happened to notice. They were throughout the room, landing around our belongings and water bottles, and when we woke up in the morning there were so many that they were around our faces. I took pictures because I couldn't believe the number of them in a hotel room. We had been traveling through Michigan for the week and stayed at multiple other properties without experiencing anything remotely similar. We also travel to Northern Michigan regularly, so when management explained that there is a short period each year when fruit flies can be particularly prevalent in the area, I understood the explanation--but it didn't explain why this was the only hotel room where we encountered them at this level. I brought the issue to management's attention and gave the hotel an opportunity to make it right. I was initially offered a 15% refund. I explained why I didn't believe that was an appropriate resolution, and management took my concerns back to the owners for further review. I was ultimately told that the owners had decided the 15% refund would remain their final resolution and that nothing additional would be offered. I declined the 15%. I've worked in hospitality for 25 years, and what disappoints me most isn't simply that the room had a problem. Problems happen in hotels, restaurants, and every other hospitality business. What defines a hospitality organization is how it responds when something goes wrong. For a property positioning itself as a boutique hotel, I expected considerably more care in both the condition of the room and the response afterward. Being awakened with fruit flies around us is not an experience I consider acceptable, regardless of the season. I'll include my photos with this review so people can see what we experienced and make their own judgment. I don't enjoy leaving reviews like this, and I gave the property an opportunity to address the situation privately before posting publicly. Unfortunately, after the owners determined that 15% was their final resolution, I felt it was important to share an honest account of our experience. The room had a lot of potential. The hospitality surrounding the problem did not.
