What a challenge this is to write, in some ways. I have so few 1 star reviews, and I try so hard to find reasons NOT to give them only one or two stars. This should be a zero star review, with 1 star given only for the owner's agreement with me that the hair was bad. Cliffs: Horrible service, horrible color (think coloring/lowlighting your hair in the dark by yourself.....same results), saved by giving a full $$$ refund. I have almost black hair, weird blackish 'mahogany' roots, and a third strange color...like stripes/bands around my head. ~~~~~~ I have a new rule for places such as salons: must visit twice before writing a good review. You have no idea how glad I waited. My stylist moved across town to where I'm never at...so I researched, on Yelp of course, for a new one. My haircut was decent the first time, and there was a warm welcome and just had a good feeling. I decided to go back a few weeks later for a 'body wave/perm'. That's where the story starts to go wrong. Upon arriving that morning, I was not acknowledged by one of the FOUR employees in the lobby; two on the floor doing stock, and two on the phones (not even eye contact or a head bob or smile!). A few minutes of standing there waiting, and I was asked for my name, and offered a drink. My appointment started right on time (and was the only thing 'right'). I was there for a perm (my hair needs it to hold ANY curl or volume); however, my stylist decided that I was there for color, which we had also discussed for a future visit. I had researched this a LOT and asked an acquaintance professional stylist which I should do first...definitely perm, not color. Well, I feel like the stylist didn't want to do the perm, so he claimed I had to get the color first. After talking for 10 minutes, I felt pressured to go ahead with the color. Well, he's the professional, right? We looked at color, talked about what I did and DIDN'T want and he was confident that it would work out. Things I was adamant about, and he PROMISED TO DELIVER: NO ROOTS when I'm getting color, no blonde streaks left from previous colors, and dimension throughout (dramatic, not subtle). I got the EXACT OPPOSITE of those things. I have a 'crown' of roots that are one color, hair another color, no dimension, and STILL blond streaks (I only had like 5 'highlighted' pieces to begin with...I still have 4!!). When I got to my car and looked at it further, not only was I dismayed to find more issues, I had a good quarter of inch of color along my hairline that had not been removed. I had to go back in to request it, and I was a complete imposition to the front desk staff judging from their attitudes to my return less than 5 minutes after leaving. Even my eyebrow wax was VERY shabby. Sigh. I also caught my stylist in a lie or two; their brand new product they just had a meeting about...same line he told me 6 weeks ago. But maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought...so I dine out and think about it. I visited with another acquaintance, who knew more than I did, and realized just how bad my hair was by that point... ****** Upon returning to the salon, and getting the same attitude upon my now 3rd visit of the day, I asked for the owner. I can't believe how I kept my cool so well, although I felt like they were trying to deny me a moment with the owner; however, they probably thought it was better to bring him out than to have me sitting in the lobby unhappy and with bad hair, around other customers. I had to ask no less than 4 times to speak with him (he was in a meeting). I had finally to give a 'look'. (Ask my sister about our 'looks'. Deadly) Now for the ONE redeeming grace/quality of the now hours and hours long ordeal. The owner listened to my calm (really, I promise!!) reasons for being unhappy, but did not offer a solution, or ask for my solution (weird, actually). I then proceeded to ask for a full refund of my entire visit (ummm, you don't want to know how much it cost for the 1 1/2 hour visit...let's say I could have flown to Denver or Chicago). He readily agreed (***I think my hair is easily seen as THAT BAD, esp by a professional!) and accompanied me to front desk; he then asked me to give them another chance, and to have another stylist fix my hair. I declined. I have left out the stylists name on purpose. I'm sure that many of the other stylists there who have their names mentioned in other BE reviews are wonderful; however, this young man (also mentioned) still needs more training, in servicing the customer and color. If you are currently a Yelp friend, I will share this with you if you need to know. My hair is horrible and completely ruined until it can recover enough before attempting to start the process of making it right. I can't even look in the mirror without being sick about it. The good news is that I may have found the perfect (for me) stylist at another salon; he gave me a free consultation and haircut! :) Watch for that review. read more

I had a pretty awful (and well-documented on Yelp) experience with the first salon I visited after moving to KC. Thanks to the recommendation of a co-worker and like ninety billion people on Twitter, I made an appointment at Belle Epoque. It's no secret that I love wine, so when I was handed a glass as soon as I walked in, I was a happy camper. My first appointment was with Brent, who was amazing and funny and gave me a fantastic haircut. But then Brent moved away. *sob* Thankfully, a good friend and fellow KC newbie had also visited the salon and had a great experience with Adrienne. So I made my next appointment with her and was not disappointed. I was slightly nervous because I went for highlights after a long bleach-free drought, but Adrienne made me just the right amount of blonde and kept it really natural (per my request). My haircut was excellent, plus she was easy to chat with. I also happened to be sitting next to Brodie Croyle who was getting his coiff tamed. I had no idea who he was (I suffer from sports apathy) but found it hilarious once I was filled in. Especially since the greater Kansas City area seems to hate him. In conclusion: great salon, lovely stylists, excellent haircuts and color, random Chiefs players and wine. The end. read more

This is the 4th salon that I've been to in KFC. My appointment was at 11am; I came directly from another appointment so I ended up showing up at around 10:20am. Instead of having me wait 40 minutes, my stylist took me right away. (Thank you, Amanda!) I made my appointment online in which they randomly scheduled me with Ryan...I got a phone call about a week later saying that he had the day off so they were switching me to someone else. I appreciated them calling and letting me know, but when I went in today; I saw that a "Ryan" was with a client. Not sure if someone had requested him and I got booted or he decided not to take the day off anymore? Slight annoyance but that's just me. For 1st time clients, they purposely schedule an additional half hour for a consultation that consists of a redundant, 2 page questionnaire; however, this forces the stylist to find out more about your hair and what you are/aren't happy with. Nice touch, Belle Epoque. My stylist, Amanda, was the sweetest girl. I have SUPER long hair and though I wanted to keep the length, some stylists get scissor happy once they see the mane they get to work with. Amanda assured me she wasn't like that (even before I said anything). I also told her that I didn't care for any sort of product in my hair and she didn't goop anything on, nor did she try to sell me anything while I was leaving. I wish she kept it just a tad bit longer but hair grows, right? The salon has a parking lot a couple doors down, which is always a win for me. Who likes parallel parking anyways? Not I. Inside is cozy, yet chic and modern in it's own way without being pretentious, *ahem Skyline*. Thanks, Amanda and Belle Epoque! I have been going to Belle Epoque for about a year, with a couple detours for groupon offers, but everytime I go I am impressed with the technique and service. The ambience is great, with a very urban/chic feel.When you walk in, they offer you a beverage, ranging from coffee/tea to soda, and even wine. When you leave, they set up your next appointment, grab your coat and belongings (as well as help you into the coat) and (my fav. part) offer you chocolate before you leave to complete the experience. They are a bit pricey, but I have never been dissappointed with my hair afterwards, and I go longer in between appointments because the color (partial highlights) last long enough. A slight downside is that you can't tip on a credit card. You can only tip in cash or check, so there have been times that I have had to even up with my stylist on a separate occasion, which I feel sleazy doing. Another great thing about the salon: the owner believe is continuous improvement and bettering his employees, often sending them to national conferences and learning experiences in style havens like NY/. I highly recommend this salon and the wonderful stylists who work there. You won't be disappointed when you leave! read more

I scheduled my appointment after reading quite a few good reviews on here. What I found was *NOT* what I'd expected or hoped for. The gent at the front was gracious and helpful, offered me something to drink, and explained the parking locations available. That's about the only compliment I can offer. The stylist went through the questionnaire with me, which includes questions like "What do you like most/least about your hair?" and "What problems have you had with your hair." I explained that I have a single wave of curl that's a problem area, and that I liked the color splash I have at the front (as shown in my photo, my hair is dark brown with a blond and a red dash of color at the front). I said that I am open to new things with it, and she suggested replacing some of the blonde splash with purple. I told her that I've tried that before and the color washed out within a week. I also said that I was concerned about matching color. Before I could explain why, she interrupted to assure me she would have no problem matching color. Her idea of matching color is to go darker than the original shade, including the roots of both color splashes I have. Now I'll have to go through double processing and spend a lot more just to get my hair color ok again. (Nearly black roots at the red and yellow color splashes, so at least two areas will need to be bleached before they can be recolored.) Also, I had almost no blonde left - she'd done the purple after all, which was not real noticeable but washed out within 2 weeks, leaving a blah, light brownish color. The haircut was decent, not bad but certainly not worth what I paid for it. I had a few areas I had to trim myself to blend them a bit better. The stylist was friendly enough, and during the time I spent with her, I learned she's been a stylist for less than a year. When I left, they did not offer the $10 Yelp discount I had read about even though I'd written down "Yelp" as where I'd learned of the salon. Perhaps I misunderstood something, though, and I did not ask for it. The salon sent me several email surveys for follow-up. I debated answering, but finally decided to because I thought perhaps they'd offer me a new stylist and waive the cost of the extra process in order to keep my business, but I never heard a word back. UPDATE: It cost me over $250 to get the color correction I needed, and I ended up staying with the overall color being so dark because full correction would have cost over $300. read more

I recently moved to KC from Phoenix. Being the "girly girl" I am, finding a hair salon was one of my biggest fears... lucky by picking up an issue of KC Magazine I found Belle Epoque and was matched up with the amazing Debbie. In the two times I have visited her (three if you count my OCD consultation... yes, I was that scared to get my hair cut and highlighted), I walk away feeling great! My hair is healthier, longer (YAY!) and has amazing color. The salon is a quick walk away from work in downtown and is the perfect retreat for a mid-day cut and color. Just moved here from CA, was having major anxiety about getting a stylist that could deal with my very fine, curly hair. It took me years to find my stylist back in CA. So when I saw the Yelp reviews, in I came! Was arbitrarily placed with Riane - she was sooo sweet, genuinely friendly , and did a thorough consultation with me which totally put me at ease. Talked me through what products I use, maybe some I should try, what my vision for my hair was... she was just amazing and gave great input without being too pushy. My hair was a MESS: no cut in 4 months, shaggy, grown out layers, crispy edges, messed up bangs, no shape. if I were a stylist I woulda taken one look and RUN!! Free scalp massage with shampoo (aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh) and then on to the cut. She took what I wanted to acheive and added her knowledge/expertise to create my fav haircut to date! Great blowout, let me play with the products, tips and tricks. Luther rang me up, again super nice and friendly! actually took the time to get my name right which always warms my heart :) I got a Yelp checkin product discount and walked out with a banging haircut, two great bottles of product I cannot wait to try, a mini Snickers bar (uh winning!), and a appointment date for 6 weeks away... can't wait! My wife moved to KC over a year ago and started looking for a place that could continue to do a great job of coloring her hair. She checked around and eventually went to Belle Epoque to do a color consultation with Jane. The hour long conversation she had with Jane about color, styling, and other beauty tips convinced her this place could be the ticket to great hair. The results have been amazing! Jane's skill at layering colors with depth and richness are a real treat to see. Her tips on how to work and treat hair have raised my wife's styling and look to a new level. And Jane has such an easy conversational style she's become a friend. I've joined my wife in KC and become a customer of Jane's too. The consultation was interesting, even thought provoking, the cut has been the best I've ever had, and the wine and chocolates complete the experience of this being by far the best hair styling place I have ever experienced. Our daughter drives 3 hours from college down here for styling (and a visit of course) now and then. It's well worth the price and deserves five stars! read more

Katie did an amazing job of really listening to me and my concerns along with my wants and needs. While it did take a long time to get complete and was a bit expensive, I can honestly say it was worth it. I left the salon feeling confident and my hair was FINALLY how I had been wanting it for months. I actually was there so long that I felt like I was apart of the "family." :) Katie gave me some popcorn and the owner gave me two bananas! Went in for a possibly traumatic hair experience, and came out feeling like a million bucks! My hair was down to my butt and shaggy like a pony; Katelyn gave me a phenomenal pixie cut and lovely color. The best part was that my former long tresses were donated to a charity that makes wigs for children with hair loss. I was pretty nervous going in and was pretty worried I was going to walk out in tears - instead I feel and look incredibly chic and stylish. She took great care of me; starting with a consultation, giving me suggestions and really listening to my wants. If you want a quality cut, I highly recommend Belle Epoque! Belle Epoque's customer service and superb stylists will keep you coming back again and again. I did an initial research for "best salon in KC" and Belle Epoque came up at the top of the list. With write-ups from Elle and the Pitch, there's no wondering why they were highly regarded once you enter their doors. The front desk is always friendly and greet you as soon as you enter. They offer you drinks, anything from juice to wine, and immediately take your coat and hang it. Like many people have said, if you're a first timer, you are initially scheduled a hair consultation with your stylist. You go over things like: what you like about your hair, what you are unhappy about and what would you like to see. My stylist, Ryan Warner, is the best stylist I've ever had. He really listened to my qualms I've had about my hair and has adapted my wants into a very manageable and awesome style. He is very good at explaining what he is going to do with my hair, why he's doing it and how I can recreate the look myself at home. It's refreshing to have someone who understands what you're trying to execute and can adapt that to your personal style. I feel if that's my experience with Ryan, I'm sure that any of the stylists at Belle Epoque gives the same caliber of service. Prices are a little higher than what I'm use to paying for salon services. But I figure that I'm at an age where I need to start paying for quality instead of what's cheaper. I can't say enough good things about this salon. It's in a great location in the middle of downtown, with a warm and cozy yet loft-like ambiance that lends itself to everyone feeling comfortable inside. Luther and all the other staff greet everyone with a smile and immediately offer beverages upon arrival. While I've had a couple stylists there over the years due to out-of-state relocation, I've never been unhappy when I walked out. Which, by the way, when you walk out you're offered a piece of candy to sweeten the rest of your day. They often have sales on products or promotions going on and also offer referral bonuses, but I'd refer friends here even without those perks. Excellent salon all around. read more

I've been going to Belle Epoque for around a year now, and I can be fairly picky about my hair. Emma, my stylist, is meticulous and energetic. She is also a good conversationalist, if you like that sort of thing in a stylist. I am always very pleased with the cut when I leave. I also enjoy the artsy, laid-back atmosphere. And while I always decline, Luther (and staff) never forget to offer chocolate and refreshments. It's a great place, worthy of five stars. I have a bad habit of not taking care of my hair very well, so my hair was in absolutely horrible terrible shape. As in, I haven't had a haircut in over a year kind of terrible shape. A coworker of mine recommended Belle Epoque, and the credentials were amazing, so I made an appointment for a cut. By chance, I ended up with Heather, who is nothing short of amazing. I brought in a few inspiration pictures, she sat with me and asked me what I like about each picture, and we decided on a style to do. She played with my hair a little bit before we got down to business, so she could assess the situation. Here's the moment I knew I had a great stylist: she told me how the damage had been done to my hair, and then told me how to fix it. She gave me options! Stylists I've had in the past would either ignore my hair problems or simply point out the things that are wrong with my hair and offer zero solutions. This seems like a no-brainer sort of attribute a great stylist would have, but I've had very bad luck with stylists in the past (a huge reason I hardly ever visit the salon). She gave me a shampoo/conditioning, and here is where I should mention that Heather gives. The best. Scalp massages. The BEST. (Superfluous periods were necessary.) I'm incredibly happy with my haircut. As she styled it she walked me through the products she was using, why they were good for my hair (I like that she gave me specifics to look for, for when I shop for new product), and showed me how to style it and properly blow out my hair. After my cut, she walked me through the products she would recommend for my hair, but (and this is another thing I adored) she didn't pressure me to buy anything. I did buy some product, but because I wanted to, and not because I felt I had to. A great experience. I have my next appointment scheduled to get some color, and I honestly can't wait! These people clearly know their hair, and I would recommend them (especially Heather) to anyone. read more

Without a recommendation I took my chances and randomly made an appointment with Adrienne. I was very pleased with the experience. The atmosphere was great, parking is available, the price was competitive, and the customer service was excellent. All 1st time clients have a thorough consultation by their stylist. After Adrienne asked me several questions about the look I want, challenges I have, etc she gave a suggestion on a slight change that could improve my look. The salon uses TIGI products, Bed Head and S Factor. Adrienne did a great job and I enjoyed chatting with her. I left completely satisfied after paying $32 for my cut with a consultation, great scalp massage, relaxing and fun environment, and the mini bag of M&M's they sent me on my way with! This place definitely deserves the 5 stars that it currently has. I just moved from Texas (don't ask me why) and was needing a cut after all that summer damage. Naturally I got on Yelp, because I don't let just anyone touch my hair, and found this place. I went in blind selecting a stylist in the 2nd tier of experience because 2 years is just not enough, esp. since I've had horrible experience with choppy, uneven layers. Anywho, Luther assured me that Ryan was great w/ layers and he was right. He did a great job making sure they were seamless as to avoid the choppy, shelfy look. I only wish he'd gone a little shorter with the top layers because I do like a more dramatic look but I'll be sure to emphasis that next time. The prices are pretty good for what you're getting. Someone in the same tier as Ryan (5 years experience) costs $36 for shampoo, cut & style. (Plus I had a first-time consultation which kind of made feel like I was answering pageant questions but whatever. I felt this part was a little unnecessary.) I continue to LOVE this salon--absolutely my favorite in Kansas City! Prompt, professional and friendly service, high quality products with specials all the time, and of course, excellent stylists. Adrienne really knows what she's doing, is chill but professional and I always leave looking and feeling amazing! Plus, she does a great job of recommending products suited to my hair and teaching me how I can style it at home. She really understands the texture and behavior of my hair, which I appreciate. I will be coming here time and time again, and I recommend you do too! As for the less than stellar reviews here, perhaps they need to just find a stylist that better understands their hair and what they want. However, a friend recommended Belle Epoque, and I loved it. I used Heather--and she is amazing. Not only did she provide a detailed questionaire about the beginning regarding my perspective and what I wanted from the salon, but she also gave me tips on how to style my hair, gave me insight and a tutorial on how to blow it out, and helped me pick out products specific to my need. After living in Kansas City for a very long time and being moderately satisfied with the places I went, I finally found a place where I'm truly delighted with my haircut. I'm a male with curly hair, and I often find that even the most experienced stylists encounter difficulty getting my hair the way I'd like it to be. Bridie does an amazing job, she sat me down the first time I got my haircut and went through a list of ~20 questions about my dislikes/likes, wants, needs, and questions about my hair. She keeps very detailed notes and always knows what she did the last time I came. She's very friendly, funny, professional, and easy to get along with, and a fantastic listener when it comes to what you want with your hair. Also, they do a great job recommending (very affordable) products that they guarantee fully, meaning that if you don't like the product, or it doesn't work for you, you can bring it back and get a full refund (within a reasonable amount of time, obviously). I'm moving out of town so I won't be able to go here anymore which I'm extremely bummed about, but do yourself a favor and check this place out, I've yet to be dissatisfied with any aspect of my experience here, and neither have any of my friends and co-workers who go here now. read more

I don't know why it just occurred to me to write a review for a salon instead of just restaurants like I normally do... I've been coming here for several years now, and everyone here is amazing. My favorite thing is that they sit down with you before your first appointment and go over everything about your hair: what you love, what you don't, what you want, what you need. Everything is focused on making sure you have the hair style you need. They review your information with every visit to ensure nothing has changed. I get a my hair cut approximately every eight weeks, with partial highlights every other visit. I've had people at other salons tell me my hair looks great and is in wonderful shape. I credit that to Belle Epoque, as well as Darcy and her excellent work. They sell a full selection of Tigi, Davines and other brands. I've never felt pressured into buying product, but everything I've purchased has been exactly what I needed. The complimentary glass of wine, the scalp massages during shampoo and the chocolate when you leave are just icing on the cake. Compared to some of the places my friends go, it's probably a little pricy, but it's worth it for me to feel this good about my hair. read more

I've seen Rianne (the girl) a couple of times before, but this time I saw Heather. She was amazing. So friendly and easy to talk to, and she gave me a great haircut and style. My parents and husband kept telling me how great it looked -- even my dad! Heather also gave me a tutorial on how to blow dry my frizzy hair straight and showed me what products she used on me, with no pressure to buy. One of the reasons I love Belle Epoque is that they don't try to up-sell and they don't try to get me to dye my gray hair. And $36 for a great haircut in a really nice salon? BARGAIN. I had a haircut with Alex today. It was my first time in the salon. Alex was very kind, very understanding. I have very thin hair. I wanted to change and get a very short dixie hair cut. My hair is very challenging but she made a great job. I am very happy how it turned out. I felt very safe in the salon even there are no covid safety guidelines on the website but they are in the salon. I'll come again definitely! read more

This is one of the more popular salons on Yelp. Parking was a bit of a hassle for us, b/c we couldn't find anything in the nearby lot. Luckily, a spot opened up right in front of the salon. My first impression upon entering was that this was quite a trendy, modern salon...all very promising. I wasn't looking for much that day though, just a simple pre-wedding blowout. I had been traveling since 4:30a, and didn't have the equipment (or to be honest, the skills) to do my own hair. I was quoted higher prices elsewhere, so I was very pleased to find such a nice place offering blowouts for $26. I was offered drinks upon entering and directed to Kate, who immediately took me back for a shampoo. It was a very relaxing experience, and she didn't get hardly any water on my face and the water temperature was perfect. She then asked me a few questions about what I was looking for...I told her volume and curls. I specifically told her that my hair hates holding onto any shape I put into it, so I think I contributed to the end result. She did tease and style my hair in a way that held out all night, and through to the next morning! I think she had to use the strongest hold spray for that effect. I thought she did a good job, but the result was not quite the hollywood hair that I envisioned. It was more like Texas big with hard curls. The curls were a little haphazard, too. I would've pinned it back if I had anything on me. Like I said, I think I did this to myself more than anything, so a 3.65 score seems about right...round it to a 4 b/c it's not fair to lower the business' high rating b/c of my communication issues. For an hour's of work $26 is very fair. I would consider coming back but def ask for a more polished, softer look. read more

Belle epoque is one of the many places we will miss in kansas city as we relocate! I make it a point to go to all of my wife's salons because I love to see her pampered and receive the service I think she deserves. Seriously guys take you wives here, it's trendy cool but they really strive to make this hair cut not just a hair cut but a conversation centered around an experience. Way to go Belle Epoque! Have been coming here for a year! Callie is my hairdresser and it's very unfortunate that she will be leaving for better things. Luther is always friendly and prompt when you enter the door, and I think it's very nice and endearing how chocolate is offered after your services. I cannot say enough good things about Alex! She's such an amazing stylist words cannot even describe how talented she is. Her creativity is above and beyond, her personal style reflects and overflows to her clients, leaving you a little cooler than when you walked in. Alex takes her time, but is very efficient. She is very dedicated to her clients and is a dream to get to chat with while she does my hair! Alex has been doing my hair for a few years now. She has tackled every challenge I've given her from giving me an icy, platinum blonde lob, to a razor cut shag, and to now a natural looking head of hair with long, flowing extensions that could not blend more seamlessly if the Hair Gods themselves had installed them. ‍ She is a goddess and a savior- I will literally never let another soul touch my hair. My first experience here was great. Everyone was friendly my hair turned out amazing! It was delightful. Then I went there a second time and got my hair colored, it turned out great but with a cut and the color I had to dish out over $200. They didn't tell me in total how much everything was going to be so when I got up the counter to pay and the nice check out girl gave me the price I about threw up. I literally went to my car after that and balled my eyes out because I could barely afford it. Just being honest folks if you get your hair cut here, I'm all for it. If you get your hair colored here, you are wasting your money! Now I go to a small salon in blue springs and with a cut and color I've never paid over $100. read more

Adrienne is the best stylist that I have ever been to in KC. Considering I have been here for 25 years, that's saying something. I have medium length naturally curly hair and she worked some serious magic with it. Thinned it in all the right places and cut it so well my face even looked thinner!!! I had lots of body and movement and she spent lots of time showing me tips on making sure i could get the same results at home straight or curly. My highlights consisted of two low-lights, one highlight and a toner treatment. It looks natural and refreshing. Truly seamless. Perhaps the best part is she is great at conversation. It was light and easy. She isn't snobby or pretentious and you actually want her to be your best friend! The initial consultation consisted of a lot of questions about how I feel about my hair/color etc. I felt she used all of that information to give me exactly what I didn't know how to describe. The salon is cool and funky and the reception staff remembers your name and truly goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome. The prices were very reasonable and although they don't "push" the products on you, I decided I wanted to buy them. I now know why she comes so highly recommended. Don't walk, run.
