My fiancée called a week later and the owner explained they were running behind because of snow, which was a lame response (I own a business two blocks away and still managed to take care of our customers during the snow days). He also said his wife had been sick, which would have been easier to be understanding of if someone had at least called us. He said he would have the mold done soon and get back to us. Another week passed with no contact from Jewelry Affair. Three more days passed and the owner's wife left a voice message explaining again that they were delayed owing to snow and her not feeling well. She said the mold would be done in another week. That week passed with no word from Jewelry Affair. I called at this point and spoke to Beth, the owners wife. I said my "patience is exhausted." She said she would look into it and get back to me, again leaning in on the excuses of snow and health delays, this time adding that it's just the two of them (as though their staffing problems should be my problem.) Four days passed with no contact from Jewelry Affair. That Friday my fiancée and I walked into the store and expressed our frustration. Beth explained that she wasn't able to call me back because my name is not in the invoice. She did not explain what kept her from calling my fiancée instead. We were offered no apologies or accommodations. The owner, Rodney, appeared at the top of the stairs to further argue our position and explain away their horrible customer service but could not be bothered to come down and speak with us. I was very angry at this point, and though I did not use profanity and merely suggested they try communicating with their customers, he said I was "being nasty about this." I demanded they return the engagement ring (a $20,000 piece of jewelry). He said he needed it to finish the wedding band, which he had already poured, skipping the agreed step of allowing my fiancée to first look at the wax mold. Rodney said the ring would be done by noon the next day. We came back the next day and the ring was ready. Beth was quite pleasant. The ring was beautiful. It was a better ending to a frustrating experience that should have been joyful given the circumstances. It's too bad, really. The guy is a decent jeweler but, in my opinion, a crummy business man with an attitude problem. We won't be back.

Since we live in Seattle, we were able to make multiple trips up to visit them so we could get exactly what we wanted. James is one of the top experts of mokume-gane in the country. It's a very old technique used first used in Japan to make samurai swords and fine knives. The technique has now been modernized but it's still a very labor intensive job. We first became interested in getting these wedding bands after a friend showed us their work online. My then-fiance was very interested in getting something different for his band (but not flash) and when he saw the wood grain mokume pattern, he knew he had to have it! They don't have a storefront - all the work is done in their home studio. We called ahead to make an appointment (we only gave them a few hours notice the first time - oops), and Terry was able to show us the bands that we were interested in. They are very warm people and they welcomed our hyperactive puppy into their home as well. Their work is not cheap, but we wanted to get nice bands since it was going to be the only jewelry that my husband is ever going to wear and we wanted them to last a lifetime. Terry was able to provide us with a variety of quotes for different metal combinations so we were able to find one that was in budget. She also answered a multitude of questions over email and very patiently over the phone. I would definitely recommend James and Terry for wedding bands and other jewelry.

I've seen a lot of pictures online, and the jewelry shop had some examples, but nothing prepared me for how it looked when it arrived. It took a little longer than estimated but in my opinion, was totally worth the wait. I chose 4 colors, a simple narrow band, etched. The ring is absolutely perfect. It's a stunning piece of art. James Binnion took a simple sketch and turned it into something above and beyond what I'd expected. Very, very pleased. ETA - March 2018 Due to weight loss and reduction in size of my finger (like everything else), the ring became much too loose. It was in danger of falling off and I was tired of wearing a guard ring next to it. So I contacted the Binnions directly to see about resizing it. They guided me through the whole process; they sent ring gauges for me to try, and a box to send the ring in. In a couple of weeks it was done. I paid the bill and they sent it back to me. It fits perfectly. Terry and Elizabeth were so helpful. The artist who did the resizing did a great job. My ring is perfect now and I'm really happy. Great customer service, and wonderful artistry and workmanship.

After looking at a couple of the chain stores in the mall, I wanted to check with Borthwick's, mainly because I live in Ferndale, they are local, and I have heard good things. The chain stores tried to upsell me, and would have had to order the stone, and send the ring out for setting. The salesperson at Borthwick's was very friendly and helpful, and showed me a couple options that were in stock in the store in the price range I was looking for. She said it would take up to a week for the fitting, and would be done in house. I left to think about it for a little while, then came back and was able to negotiate the price down a little more on the diamond I wanted. I made the deal, put down half the cost for deposit, and was told it could take up to a week if any changes needed to be made in the setting. Three hours later I got a call and they said it was already done and I could pick it up when I was ready! I went back, picked it up along with an appraisal. The ring looks like new. They advised that we bring it back every six months or so for cleaning and inspection at no charge. I gave the ring with the new diamond to my wife on out 30th anniversary. She was very pleased at the selection I made on the stone, so I'm happy. :)
