Overpriced junk store...whereas the REStore has a "focus", Penny pinchers seems to have PLANNED to have anything and everything...which in way sounds good, but one goes from room to over crowded room and an awful lot of the stuff I saw would have been more appropriately priced "free" because it's old and very worn in some places...I'm sure there are "finds" to be had there, but once you check the prices...well once "I" checked the prices I put things back. Not a good value. At one point I found what felt to be a full spray can of spray starch ( $2-3 in stores) theirs was marked $5. (!!!) Karen came by my sister-in-law's house and looked at her stuff with my husband, and poo-pooed everything she saw, giving a reason to downgrade everything. Then, when she was done, she sent us an offer stating that between what she thinks she can get and what her costs would be to sell everything and clean out the house, she would break even, so we would get nothing. I am writing this because I came in a few days ago, heard that the shop is struggling, and would genuinely hate to see this place close. I am an antiques collector & have been visiting this shop pretty regularly for the last 2 years or so. I used to love shopping here, because I would find nice antiques at an affordable price compared to the other antique stores in the area. However, over the last 6 months to a year, I feel as though things have changed. Customer service here is never particularly great, I easily used to come in a few times a month and I can only recall once or twice where I was greeted at the door or asked if I needed help finding anything. Usually I can overlook this because I love shopping by myself, and usually could find some neat items to make up for the lack of customer service. But as stated earlier, this is no longer the case. The same Fenton fairy lamps have been sitting in one of the glass cases for about a year, possibly longer. They're priced at $90, with many of the prices of the items nearby being cited as being from ebay and similar websites. However, when you search similar items online (Christmas themed Fenton Custard Fairy Lamps) you will find many listings of the same/similar items priced around $50. Clearly no one is buying the items they are selling at the prices they are being listed for, so you would think you might try to drop the prices if items have been sitting for upwards of 6 months. It's certainly hard to ignore the irony of a place called "Penny Pinchers" going out of business because their prices are too high. A few days ago was my first time in the shop in the last 4-6 months, and pretty much all of the inventory was the same both times. As an antiques collector, one thing that keeps me coming to a shop often is an inventory that rotates frequently. The last few times I've shopped here very few things have interested me, so it hasn't really crossed my mind that I need to go back anytime soon, since there won't be much new inventory anyway. It is my belief that high prices, lack of customer service, stagnant inventory, and a not-so-great physical location (being a bit secluded on the Guide Meridian) is what is killing this business. Old customers are not returning because prices are too high and new items are not being added/rotated frequently enough, not to mention the customer service just isn't great. New customers are not coming in because of lack of advertising and a poor physical location. And, if new customers do come in, they're not buying anything or coming back because of the prices and customer service. The owner seemed desperate for feedback when I was in the shop the other day, so I hope they see this review and adjust accordingly. As I said, I would hate to see this place close. This used to be my favorite antique shop in Bellingham, and I hope there's a day it can become my favorite once more. read more

This place is not for penny pinchers and is definitely not clearance. They sell rusty and broken things for just as much as a working new version. They will look up items on eBay when you're at checkout and say "look what it sells for!" and show an item in working condition. What a joke. Every thrift and pawn shop in town is cheaper. I've had similar experiences as other reviewers with the customer service. One young women that works there is friendly, but the old people will laugh in your face if you don't pay hundreds of dollars for broken furniture with a bad paint job. I will never take a bad review lightly. After my roommate sadly lost his parents, he was left with Fiestaware and nice antiques that we just didn't have the room for or the time it takes to sell. We found Penny Pinchers in an advertisement, called the owner, who came within an hour, ready to load up her super fancy van. As soon as she packed it up, her demeanor changed, to not so sweet, and left quickly, acting as if she just did us a giant favor, by taking our garbage. A couple months later, we decided to stop into her store on the Guide. It was set up really nice with a lot of antiques and things. At the front of this store, we spotted an antique that his parents once owned and after realizing the owner was working that day, commented to her about this nostalgic piece of art. What she then said, would bother you so much, you would find it actually unbelievable and rotten. I decided I would keep her evil words out of this. I don't want to rethink that and I won't do that to you either. The following morning, driving very early to work, I happen to encounter this same woman. Early mornings, driving the Guide is quiet and it seems like you are the only vehicle on the road at times. I have no clue where this lady came from, suddenly I realized that the person driving this van was trying to run me off the road! What the heck is going on? I made no sudden moves and the van was eventually able to pull up beside me at a light. I looked over and saw the owner of Penny Pinchers, with her hands up, screaming obscenities at me, for whatever reasons, I don't know. is the speed limit too slow? I just smiled at her as she barreled off in her black van. This has been my poorest review yet. There will be bad days for us all and crappy things happen that are out of our control. I took my backpack in to the store so my car wouldn't get broken into to grab it and I was told - loudly - that "we have lockers for your backpack". Really? Not friendly. I had been looking for a small desk or table for a specific area in our new house and had just about given up hope. Then, the rain stopped, clouds cleared and the sunshine broke through ..... And I remembered I hadn't checked Penny Pinchers. I had passed it but never stopped in. So I stopped and what a great place; big and stuffed like a squeaky toy with great finds. Found an older, worn baseball glove in the back of the shop without a price tag on it. In the same area where they had a flood not too long ago; I've seen them drying out items and selling them. Brought it up to the front to ask about a price and the woman wanted $65 for it. What a joke. Definitely won't be returning. Watch out for her! read more

I have driven by this place a number of times on my way to the Nooksack Casino. One day I finally decided to stop. I was hopeful as I walked in as it looked like the store was jam packed with treasures. As I started to walk in, there was a big sign saying NO purses or backpacks allowed. Uh...okay. I can understand backpacks, but no purses? The sign also stated they had lockers for purses etc. Uh...no. I'm not going to put my purse in a locker, even if it is secured with a key, then walk around the store. I went outside and carefully placed my purse out of view in my car and set the car alarm. I hoped no one saw me stash my purse. Ok. So I go back into the store with my husband. We start looking around. There are many different items to look at, and many are quite beautiful or unusual. BUT the prices of 99% of everything in the store was completely ridiculous! I'm glad that they think their stuff is so valuable. If it's so valuable and so pricey...KEEP IT! The women in the front didn't say hello when we walked in. Okay, no big deal I guess. But then a fellow I'm sure associated with the store started literally following us around! I mean everywhere. I bent down to look at something on the floor, there he was. I looked through a shelf and he was there looking at me from the other side. My husband went to look at stuff in the back and he literally ran to the back to keep an eye on him. I have never stolen anything in my life. Coming to this store...made you feel like you were viewed as a criminal from the get go! I tried to get beyond it as I wanted to look at things in the store, but the weird vibes got me heading to the door. My husband came out of the back closely followed by the strange man. We will NEVER go back to this store, and will advise our friends not to do so either. Meh. We've been here about four or five times.....and we've noticed that the prices are pretty stinkin' high. They like to paint pretty much every piece of furniture that comes through that door and if they DON'T paint it- expect the price to be super jacked up. There ARE a lot of odds and ends- oddball appliances, tools, pictures, chairs, glassware, etc....but it just doesn't make up for the prices. It's a shame because a place like this could be that type of store you could have a lot of fun in AND find some pretty good deals on some oddball thing you need in the kitchen or a side-table you've been looking for. We just feel there are better places in town to look for your treasures at a bargain price. read more

While I have enjoyed shopping here in the past, the prices seem to have gotten a little ridiculously expensive lately. I bought a lace table cloth a few months ago for a few dollars. The next time I went in, similar items were priced $12 and higher. It's unfortunate, because they have some AMAZING stuff and it is one of the better organized antique stores in the area. A very interesting place with a lot to see. But THE PRICES! My god, THE PRICES! This is not an "antique shop" it's a second-hand shop. Some rare or unique items might justify a high price, but even the junk out back, and the junk they leave outdoors in the side yard, and I do mean junk, is ridiculously priced. They can't even sell an old, chipped clay pot for a reasonable price. The books used to be one good value, but they have very few available right now. The overall impression I come away with is greed. It seems to me that if they sold the actual junk at reasonable junk prices, they could get more people in and sell more of the items that might be worth a higher price. Also, the clerk was playing music at a deafening rate; so rude. Anyway I will not be back here. read more

Went there with a friend for the 1st time and was completely amazed at the vast amount of items they had. Everything from the Garden to the Kitchen to the Garage and back to the Living room, with everything in between plus more. And their prices were more than reasonable. I could afford to get much more for my dollar. Not like other places I've been to where they would have a small selection of everyday things while they would charge what they were brand new. Stopped into Karen's place on our way back from purchasing a horse. Found out Karen was a horsewoman herself and had great conversation. We fell in love with this place instantly and spent about 1.5 hours going through it. Great furniture pieces, old farmhouse salvage, as well as crates, dishes and other oddities. Excellent customer service, great selection, and frequent sales. This is deffinetly the cleanest store like this in town, we'll organized with comfortable walkways. Other reviews have mentioned high prices but I think there might be confusion on the qualitiey vs prices. They have lots if inexpensive items but also have a selection of rarer antiques that I was happy to find, and anytime I thought a price was on the higher side they were happy to negotiate. read more

I love going to penny pinchers in Bellingham. They have pretty much anything you can think of. Some items are priced too high for me, but those are the antiques that I would love to buy, just cant afford. I got my kids school supplies there for a bargain price, the half off room in there is also a favorite of mine. I have got kids toys, and a chainsaw for my husband which they told me they guarantee everything there so that eased my husbands mind. During christmas I bought everything there, my tree, decor, wrapping and a lot of my gifts. My kids love the book area and the toys. I even bought my brother some awesome tin signs for his garage. We love shopping there and do not mind making the trip down. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Parking is good, and they even loaded my daughters desk that we bought for her. Def recommend it.
