Great place for food and drinks. Located right outside of Penn Station in Newark. The bartenders are all friendly and remember your name if you go there a few times and make convo with them. Happy hour is amazing. They have hundreds of beers and if you drink them all you can get your own chair at the bar with a plaque of your name on the back. Stopped in for a drink to watch the NFL TNF game while our kids were at a concert at the Pru Center. Cool soccer/sports vibe with enough TVs for any game you're looking for. The bartenders were friendly, and welcoming, and took the time to talk to you. Many beers on tap, some local. Full bar and serves food. The guy next to us had wings that looked delish! I came here to grab a bite before hopping on the train back to DC. Super convenient location by Amtrak which then made me dubious whether the food was going to be ok. The service was friendly and welcoming and the food was pretty good. I got their pesto crusted salmon special with spinach and it was nice (a touch to oily but otherwise good). Cost $19. They have a huge selection of bottled beers and other drinks so although I wasn't drinking it does seem like a great place to grab a drink before your train. read more

We had a long wait at the airport so decided to Uber to Newark for one last adventure for lunch. Glad we did... we ordered simple chicken tenders, buffalo chicken sandwich, the spicy fries, and regular fries, Caesar salad. First of all ... the portions were plentiful and better yet all the food was yummy! I love going to Bello's for drinks and dinner. There is an extensive beer selection here - some real quality stuff. Plus, the food is really food. My favorite dish is the shrimp tacos. The slaw they add is so tasty. Get the Cajun fries with it, too. There are some solid options for vegetarians, as well, as verified by my veggie boyfriend. This is reportedly Newark's first gastropub (did they have gastropubs in 1974?) and it's definitely a lively, local spot. I came a little before happy hour ends and it just kept getting busier. The music selection is all hits that everyone knows and the crowd will sing select songs. I tried the bartender's recommended pick as the best item on the menu, the picadinho and added the homemade french onion soup. My favorite was the soup, it's a really great example. Gotta update my review. I love this place. Great beer selection, awesome owner and bartenders, good food (everything is made fresh which is super rare for a bar), and conveniently located near Newark Penn Station. This is a nice spot after a night in New York, or even just for a night in Newark. Plan to return regularly. My previous review is below: It's a fairly small place (but they also have an upstairs that is open in the evening). Waitress was super nice and friendly. I asked her about beer recommendations and she suggested a few. I had a "milk stout," a beer brewed with lactose. It was creamy, had coffee tones, and was really enjoyable. Huge beer selection if that is your thing. I like beer now and then and appreciated the many options. The menu has a pretty good variety of options, especially for a "pub." I decided to go with one of the specials, the corned beef brisket sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fries were pretty good.Fries are made fresh and you can tell. Sandwich was really good. It was super hot and served on what looked like a Portuguese roll. It had sauteed onions and cheese. This was no corned beef sandwich. This was a corned beef BRISKET sandwich with thick, meaty pieces of corned beef. It was huge and really filling. I was starving so I ate almost the whole thing, abandoning the bread at the end and just finishing the meat. I also did not eat anything for the rest of the day; this could easily have been 2 meals. Overall, this is a cool place. The waitress was saying that it gets really busy later in the day when they open the upstairs. It is super close to Penn Station so I'm sure that helps business too. Prices were pretty good- my sandwich was $9 (a bargain) and the beer $6 (a little high compared to other places in the neighborhood but not absurd). read more

The rating is strictly on the bartenders behavior and not the food or the establishment. I came in there for the first time Ever last week in over 8 years with my friend who is a regular and frequents the place . My friend and I were sitting at the bar having a good time when a guy offered to buy a us a round of drinks . He claimed that he owed my friend some drinks from before . This was my first time there in 8 years so I was totally clueless of all the change . After a few rounds after drinks and natural conversation the guy came over and started talking to me , flirting a little . I guess this made the bartender mad because she kept walking on the outside of the bar saying stupid a** b***h. Then she would go back behind the bar take a bunch of shots herself , then come back in the outside of the bar and basically degrade me and my friend. So my friend finally asked her what the issue was and she said she was talking to us she was talking to him. My friend said , " whatever y'all have going on leave it outside " we are customers . I'm a regular and this is crazy your disrespectful to me and my friend . By this time I wanted to cancel my food order because the bartender was clearly upset over this guy who kept saying he was just a customer too. She tried to apologize by ordering us shots but I still didn't feel comfortable. We leave. My friend assures me that the girl was having a bad day and is really nice . I ask my friend what the bartenders name was , and she would not tell me. Fast forward to today I go back to try this place one more time and the same bartender is behind the bar. My friend walks in , and sits down ( same friend ) . The girl walks to the end of the bar and starts talking about my friend to another customer saying she is going to beat her a** she's not serving her . She's laughing and slapping high fives with the customer a guy at the end of the bar . A older guy comes out of the kitchen greets my friend and serves her. I'm standing talking to someone I know watching it all . I can't believe this girl has stoped serving guest to go around the bar to pop shit about my friend . As a business owner how important is my friend for... A you didn't server her( money loss) B. You stop serving other guests to talk about her ( money loss ). What our we in highSchool? I told her let's go because I can't believe whoever runs this establishment allows the bartenders to act like this. It took me a few days to get this girls name , but her name is Evie or Evelyn something of that nature. Here is my thing I'm in real estate 10 years now . You don't conduct business like that . I planned on doing some business in that area and taking co - workers out for drinks but not there . I asked my friend who is a bartender in the area as well does she act like that with her regulars when she makes drinks . She said no she just takes their money serve them , and ignore them. Work is work , and outside of work is different I guess it's a bartender thing . This was my second time there , and I will never step back in there ever. I never seen something so rude in my life . Google review has something about a racist remark, probably by the same bartender. A place where the bartenders get verbally abused , threatened , touched and the customers are still allowed to come back. Only when you see the bartender doing something she's not supposed to do , do you get banned. They overserve someone with a walking problem. He usually ends up passing out in the bathroom and the customers have to clean up after him. The last times I went there they had to pour multiple beers due to cracked glasses. Mind you I was sitting at the bar, still waited over 15 minutes to be served. The $8.25 buffalo chicken salad had more chicken, cheese, and roasted peppers than actual lettuce. Typically I'm more for the meat and cheese, but I was actually in the mood for more of a salad-salad. This is as close to a "where everybody knows your name" joint as you're going to find in Newark. And it's embarrassing that it is taken me this long to write a review, as I have been eating (and drinking) at Bello's for well over a decade. The bartenders/servers are all wonderful, the food is so much more than your typical bar grub, and well over 100 beers on the menu. My partner and I visited Bello's Pub & Grill on a weekend afternoon around 3:00pm. We sat at the bar and were greeted by a very nice gentleman. He asked us what we wanted to order, but we couldn't decide. He kindly said: we're known for having over 100 different kinds of beer, and he proceeded by pointing at an entire list of beers written in chalk on a wall. I randomly picked a beer (pictured below) and my partner just went with a typical beer (also pictured below). The beer I had, had a hint of vanilla.. which was very pleasant and definitely one of the best beers I've had in a while. The service was great. And as a female, I did not feel uncomfortable at a pub at all. I did not try the food, but from the yelp photos I've seen.. I should've tried at least one food order from their menu. Overall, it was a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Definitely give this place a shot after work, during work hours, or even on the weekends and you won't be disappointed! Added the crab corn chowder specialty that had a nice flavor and sufficient heat spice to get your attention. Came out pipping hot. Add the Picadinho specialty which is a nice collection of pork, shrimp, clams, cilantro, potatoes, onions, peppers, wine sauce, jalapeño. Has a bit of heat so no need to add pepper. Came to this restaurant for a work team dinner and did not have a great time! The table next to us was being so rowdy, loud and disruptive and the wait staff wouldn't tame them down. We couldn't hear a single thing except their conversation! Then when we were ordering, many things on the menu were out of stock for some reason. The waitress didn't even try to offer an alternative option. I ended up getting the Bello Wrap which was okay, very basic, nothing special. Visited for lunch with a colleague the other day. Heard that this place was a solid lunch spot from some coworkers. Ordered the roast beef sandwich with a side caesar salad. Roast beef sandwich had a generous portion of meat and cheese and the au jus was good. Tried to go with a healthier side option, but the salad was a pretty sad looking caesar salad. Would probably recommend a side of fries instead. My colleague had a burger and sweet potato fries. Looked like standard bar-lunch-burger-and-fries.
