Undisclosed gemstone substitutions, misrepresented diamond clarity, and swapping diamonds without client authorization reflect practices that should concern any consumer. Proceed with extreme caution. The full kit & kaboodle: I paid $11,700 to Michel E. Minden Jewelers for a custom engagement ring. What followed was a series of undisclosed substitutions, material discrepancies, and a complete refusal to take responsibility. The ring was not produced according to the design specifications. When I raised concerns, I was initially brushed off, and then later told it would cost an additional $2,000 to fix their discrepancies. An independent appraisal revealed that the "teal sapphires" paid for were actually spinels, a lower-value gemstone, which were substituted without my knowledge or consent. More concerning, the diamonds were confirmed to be SI1 clarity, despite being sold and invoiced to us as the superior VS2 clarity. When brought to Michael's attention, he informed me that his gemstone vendor substituted the stones because he couldn't find the color of sapphire (teal) that I wanted. Michael then finally offered to fix the ring "as a favor". When we asked about the issue of the diamond clarity, Michael was adamant that he sold us VS2 quality, and that he didn't care what the appraisal said. To prove his case, he offered to have the diamonds certified, which would show the VS2 quality. I had assumed he was going to have them GIA certified, but he would only agree to IGI certification, which is a less reliable (and lower cost) certification. We discussed Michael's ability to remake the ring to the original design specifications and Michael offered to reimburse us $1,500 (even though he was going to charge $2000) to contract a new jeweler to correct the work. Three weeks later the diamonds were finally available for pickup, and they were immediately mailed to the new jeweler, as this was the only component he was waiting on to finish setting the ring. Michelle, the store manager, advised that they were giving me 4 grams of raw gold to have my ring remade, so the new jeweler wouldn't run into any issues with melting down my previous ring. This seemed generous at first, except that they later told us that they wouldn't give me back my original ring, because they were giving me the gold instead. At this point, I just wanted to conclude all interactions with this business and move on. Unfortunately, when my new jeweler received the diamonds, he discovered that they were not the same dimensions as the original stones. I immediately contacted Michelle and only after pressing for answers was I told that Michael had "upgraded" the diamonds without my knowledge or authorization. The substituted diamonds were incompatible with my very specific custom design, rendering the ring impossible to recreate as originally built. Repeated emails, texts, and attempts to obtain answers were ignored. We went to the store in person after being repeatedly disregarded, at which point Michael refused to come out and later conveyed through staff that he considered the matter "closed." He even went so far as to accuse ME of trying to extort HIM!! All I wanted was my original diamonds back, or for him to take back his crappy diamonds and gold and provide a full refund. After exhausting every reasonable avenue, I filed an insurance claim and sought legal counsel. He ignored the attorneys as well but thankfully my insurance claim was approved. Without this, I would have been forced to take Michael to court. I have emails, texts, and appraisals to prove everything that happened. I came in with a new $2,500 musical pocket watch with a defective front lid that I wanted fixed; it didn't open to a 90-degree angle and the music kept playing after the lid was shut (which should turn off). The watch repair person (Alfonso) wasn't available but is only there for the first two hours in the morning. Not convenient for customers. One of the girls, Angie, told me to leave the watch there and he'd look at it. I wanted to talk with him personally so she took some photos of the watch and told me she'd talk with Alfonso in the morning. The next morning I called but he wasn't there or couldn't talk on the phone, or didn't want to. Angie got passive-aggressive with me and said I should've left the watch -- totally overlooking that she told me that she'd talk with him. I was told to bring it in. My first impression of him was a big sigh and a look of frustration on his face while looking at my watch. He told me to leave it with him to see if he could fix the lid -- no charge if he couldn't. I accepted and left the watch there. I asked Eric how long it would take and I was told two weeks. Seemed like a long time to troubleshoot a lid but fine. Two weeks went by without a word. I called and asked about my watch and was told to call Alfonso the next morning. The next morning I called and he asked me if I could wait the following Monday. That was fine. Monday came and they were closed. I called and left a voicemail. Never got a call back. I called Tuesday morning and talked with Alfonso. He then told me to come in on Thursday morning. As I was trying to ask him questions about the repair status, he kept putting me off and wanted to get off the phone. It was frustrating trying to get some simple information about my watch but it was like pulling teeth to keep Alfonso on the phone for 60 seconds. The next day (Wednesday) Alfonso called me (first time anyone called me). He asked me to come in now. I live in Boulder City and couldn't just drop everything, jump in the car, and make that ridiculous drive up to Green Valley. I still couldn't get solid information from him. Thursday morning I went in and asked the other girl there if I could see Alfonso. She seemed less than thrilled for some reason. Snooty. Alfonso came out with the watch and he explained what he did (I think?) but vaguely. I asked if the music stopped now when the lid is closed. He said yes, though not seconds later the watch started playing the music with the lid closed. Alfonso looked like he was in a hurry, took it in the back, did who-knows-what, and came back out less than a minute later. I looked at the girl and said the watch was sitting here for three weeks and she mumbled something under her breath in a rude manner. The music stopped playing when the lid closed. Not sure what he did but probably bent the lid to engage the button. As for the lid opening, he couldn't fix it. Not sure why. I didn't fully understand, but couldn't fix it. No charge. Alfonso was nice enough but made no excuses or apologies. The watch was there for three weeks and a day, and not much was done to it. I took the watch and left. A few days later, the watch started playing music again with the lid closed. What a colossal waste of time, driving, and leaving the watch there for three weeks almost untouched when I could've found another jeweler to fix it. The girls who work there are rude curtsy children, but Eric was the only one there who showed genuine friendliness and respect. When I did a charge back on my credit card it brought action when the dealer belittled me like I had done something wrong. I had my watch within ten days like I was initially promised. The watch loses 10 minutes a day after being in their hands. Gears might have been taken... After ample waiting time, the dealer then put the wrong crystal on my watch. He saw it through pictures and realized their "watch man" (Outsourced) had made the ridiculous mistake. It was a $600 repair that was 100% wrong. In previous post the dealer keeps stating that he has another watch man and would fix it free of charge. I was also told they serviced Rolex's in house. I would take my watch back for proper repair but the bottom line is I don't trust this store at all. I guess I'll remain angry about this issue for a long time to come. I never did business like this. I am so happy for all the many many customers that have rated this business five stars. I have a hard time believing we are rating the same business
