We walk to Bellwether at least once a month for some seasonal burrata, two burgers, and our favorite cocktail, the #45 and the #42. Both are some of my favorite cocktails I've ever had and I've had spectacular cocktails around the country. These are also some of the tastiest, simple burger that are very filling and well made. The burrata changes every few weeks and we have never been disappointed. Only tweak I would suggest to the kitchen is to go back to serving crostini with the burrata, but I'll never be mad about eating burrata straight. This is one of those places where you coming in a handful of times, say hi to the staff and it will quickly feel like a room full of friends. The back feels like you are enjoying a drink in your neighbor's backyard with a ton of locals who also come multiple times a month. Chill dogs sometimes make an appearance too! Please keep this place a chill relaxing spot to enjoy some very solid food and killer cocktails, and tip the staff well! read more

Cannot recommend this place enough! We had a cocktail and a few wines off the menu, all were delicious. The food was honestly 10/10, the steak frites were perfect, the mushroom tartine was fun and inspired, and the winter chickory salad was really good. My wife was charmed by the decor and furniture. After living in North Tabes for many years I longed for another cocktail bar / nosh experience since the departure of The Tannery. Enter Bellwether. Spirit forward, playful cocktails using strong ingredients, simple recipes, and no frills naming. Literally every cocktail is given a number identifier. Love that. The food is adequate. Don't come expecting to course out your meal and spend your entire night dining with apps, desserts, and chefs menus. Food takes a backseat to booze and vibe. That's ok, every place has, and knows it's niche, and Bellwether knows what it is. It's not that the food is bad either. It's really spot on. It's just not expansive for options. It's curated to the drink. Belly up on a busy weekend and people watch or retreat into the cute little garden patio in the back on any given night. If it's a night out, and you're adulting (which is rare for me), make Bellwether a stop. What a terrific resurrection of the location of the ill-fated "Caldera". Bellwether is perfect for us: excellent & always delicious small plates, beautiful outdoor courtyard for warm weather, homey 1920's-feeling indoor seating with cozy nooks and a spectacularly fitting long bar. But it is the inventive, superb, constantly changing line up of cocktails that impress us most. & the bar staff nail it with special requests. Spicy hot margarita with a plain salted rim? Great atmosphere, drinks and kind people! The first course (watermelon and peppers) came out and I was super excited about the rest of the food, because it was amazing! Then it went downhill from there. The Farro salad was just okay, the cauliflower too 30 mins and was WAY too salty, as was our steak. The peach galette was pretty good, but overall the experience was subpar. No table service and inconsistent food made me think twice about coming back again. read more

I saw Bellwether on Reddit and decided to give it a try. The food was really beyond fantastic. The atmosphere is cool. It was really busy and bustling. Here's my gripe though. I went to the counter and waited 15 mins in line to order drinks and food. The place was really busy. The bartender told me that I needed to get a table in order to order food so we weren't standing around with food and no table. We got a table relatively quickly, but it was another 20 minute wait in line to order food I think this business needs another method. Maybe the phone app service? I'm sure we would have ordered another round of drinks if there wouldn't have been a wait. The waitstaff was busy, but not overly so. Food really was fantastic. Recommend the business read more

Adorable and delicious. We sat out on the back patio on a hot day. The only way to describe it is charming. Dried flowers, woody...just a vibe. And then there's the small plates. The favorite was the mushroom tartine. But we also had albacore, cauliflower, chickpeas and fried potatoes which were so good as well. And panna cotta for dessert. We got there at around 4.30 on a Wed, and by 6 several people were waiting for our spot outside. Great spot for a summer day! read more

Not a huge menu, but really solid choices, with lots of delicious veggie options. Love the beets, carrots, and cauliflower. Drinks are amazing, particularly the tequila option (drink #33) bourbon option (drink #35). Have been here several times and always happy to have stopped by. Don't order the spring salad which consists of only mixed greens and a few mandolin-sliced radishes. There's only a whisper of salad dressing, so it's dry and bitter. [We all requested more dressing.] I would think for $9 there could be some feta or blue cheese, also nuts. How about other vegetables? Because there are few, if any, vegetarian offerings. Also, the patio is not accessible. There are a couple of small tables on the landing, but the main part is not. This should be pointed out on the website. read more

This is a great little neighborhood place. The indoor space is warm and inviting, the outdoor space is expansive, and the staff here seemed to be working really hard to keep their clientele satisfied. This review is really for whoever owns and/or manages this place. You are going to get very busy. If you plan to continue counter service (which I'm sure you will because it's tough to find staff) you need to figure out a more efficient way to do it. In my experience the folks that are doing it right are the places that allow you to put your order in from your phone and have it brought out to the table. Go check out Hi-Top on Fremont for an example of what I'm talking about. It's such a bummer to have to get up, leave the conversation and go stand awkwardly at the bar not knowing exactly where you're supposed to stand or if anybody's in front of you. Or if the bartender even notices you? And for folks who are thinking about going here, they have an awesome patio and a really cool bar. It's a great space. The charcuterie was good but a little small (why is there never enough bread?) Also had the burger and fries. Both good. I'm just a beer guy and they had some decent taps. My wife and I have been waiting for this place to open. The atmosphere of the building and it's back patio is awesome. What was disappointing was the very small menu and being told at 5:45 pm that they were out of one of the three dinner items listed. The food we did end up getting was fine but nothing stellar. They have only been open a week, so I hope they are making adjustments to become successful. Until they do, we won't be going back. read more

Back in January friends and I went to Bellwether Bar to celebrate our respective birthdays, and I had the very best burger ever; I raved about it to family and friends for a long time after. I don't know what's happened in the ensuing months; the cheeseburger I ordered today was overcooked, dry and brought to me too quickly; was it one already cooked for someone else and just sitting around? No tomato or onion anymore; just shredded lettuce and sauce and a few sweet (!) pickle slices on the side. And no more fries included. A burger and fries for $22? No thanks. I'm just really disappointed. I'm having surgery soon and wanted to really enjoy a burger before I can't eat one again for a long time. A friend cautioned me that things have changed at Bellwether; I should have listened. I'd like to think that this was just an isolated incident, but I can't afford to waste money going there again. read more

I really want to love this place. Its a great space and I love the location. I moved into the nearby neighborhood almost 2 years ago and was happy to have a walkable place to grab dinner and a drink. The cocktails are great and the food is also good, but I have to say every time I go the the Bellweather I find it a most unwelcoming place. There is typically a man and woman behind the bar and I think they may be the owners. They are totally chatty with each other behind the bar and with other staff members, but please don't ask a question, they will give an attitudinal reply... Every visit I have had in the past 2 years I am greeted by a "cold" "unwelcoming vibe". Maybe I mistake it for Portland cool...but it is NOT COOL. I have continued to give it a try, I really love supporting a local business, but I finally feel compelled to write this review. I am not alone, many people I have talked to about the attitude in this establishment feel the same way. I am tired of feeling pissed off every time I leave there that I have had to pay a fair amount of money to dine out and feel this way.
