Not very potato-y though. Could use more of that potato flavor. Overall it was a solid sandwich but at $24 for a sandwich and fries, meh. You could do better. WOW!!! That is my first thought after my lunch yesterday at Laurelhurst Market. I had been touring the cathedral of music, at Music Millennium and I asked the gentleman at the counter where was a good spot to eat. He recommended Laurelhurst, and he was right on. I have been on a Reuben kick, and the best remains at Goose Hallow. But this was a close second, as it was great. I had a half sandwich, and I am glad I did, as it was quite enough. I had the Monsignor Murphy, which featured lots of House Made Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut and Russian Dressing. I typically like a Reuben on marbled rye, as they served it on a Griddled Como Bread...and it was great. I didn't get her name at the order counter, but she was so friendly and engaging as well. My partner and I just went to LM to celebrate her birthday and were pleasantly surprised for our first visit. The service was absolutely excellent with no water running empty, a helpful server that answered our questions and made accommodations, and a bonus birthday cookie for my partner we didn't expect. The steaks definitely hold up, too! We both got steak frites, her with flatiron and me with Wagyu and were thrilled. For a steakhouse, this place has excellent fish. My husband loves this place and I'm pescatarian. Every time I've been, they always have a fish entree available and when we asked if it was possible to leave the meat off of the gnocchi, they were happy to oblige. Reasons we won't be back: We knew we'd be spending a lot from the past reviews, but the bill with tip for four of us was $400+ and that's without any appetizers, no dessert/coffee, just one drink each, and not ordering the most expensive options. The food was fine, certainly nothing justifying the costs. (We didn't get the steak for two that was market price of $175). Other steakhouses usually include some main course options for non beef eaters, but here it's just the $45 halibut. We all liked the nicely flavorful side dishes meant for sharing and would encourage everyone to try those. Oddly, there's this disconnect: The place is very "come as you are" aka Portland casual, with server in jeans, some guests in shorts, etc. That's fine, even good, if you know that in advance or if you're at a fast casual place where you order at a counter, for example. I went to the butcher shop today to get some meat but I also wanted to have a cocktail while I was there. The time was a little after 1 pm. I was greeted by the butcher, somewhat pleasant until I didn't really know what I wanted cause they were out of hanger steak. Anyway, after my purchase I asked how to get to the bar to have a drink and he said they don't serve cocktails until 5 pm. I thought that seemed wild! What a culinary triumph! I had been wanting to have dinner at Laurelhurt for years and I finally made it for my friend's birthday. To start, ambiance and service were beautiful. Whether one is here for some meats from the butcher shop or looking to consume it on a date night, the nice part is that both can be done simultaneously. (#1) For folks coming to lunch, their roast beef or reuben sandwich ($13) paired with a soup is never a bad idea. The LM Burger ($13) is a solid choice as well, featuring a nicely grilled patty with a tasty slab of white cheddar and a secret sauce. The herb and sea salt french fries ($5) are a hit, which is even better with their aioli. Italian sausage rigatoni is a lovely soup, but my group and I were underwhelmed by the pickled eggs ($2) and somewhat lackluster potato salad . And of course, one should always consider their charcuterie board, which features a daily selection of from their butcher shop, a spread of quality meats and palate pleasing condiments. Overall, dinner is the best time to go. It is the best display of what they're capable of meat wise. Tartare ($21) fans will love their beefy version, which has a nice amount of raw beef with mustard vinaigrette, tabasco, egg yolk, and parsley. The LM wedge salad ($16) is as pretty as it is delicious. If the octopus ($25) is available, this is almost always a good option. Regarding the steaks, the steak frites ($36) is an excellent choice. The herbed fries do complement their flatiron steak. I am always under the impression that one cannot go wrong with a ribeye ($64) which comes with fingerling potatoes and a kimchi vinaigrette. Their grilled hangar steak ($39) is also a very good option and I would have hard time denying their grilled New York ($58) strip. Finish off the sides with pomme frites ($9), mac and cheese ($13), and charred broccolini ($15). Overall, there's a lot to appreciate about the operation. While the quality is undeniably good, the bill adds up fast, and a few dishes felt a touch overpriced. Regardless, this place remains one of the most consistent, enjoyable dining experiences in the city. My husband is always craving a steak for his birthday and I've heard never-ending, amazing things about Laurelhurst Market, so we made a reservation to celebrate. We got seated right away, the hostess was friendly and mentioned the birthday listed on the reservation. To start, we ordered two cocktails, the beef tartare, and the shishitos peppers. The beef tartare was incredibly fresh and flavorful and the mustard vinaigrette was the perfect touch. The blistered shishitos were good, however, they were underwhelming compared to everything else and we probably wouldn't order them again. For our entree, we shared the Brandt Ranch Ribeye which was phenomenal - definitely one of our top 5 steaks we've ever had. We prefer medium rare and it was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of crème fraiche to not overpower the flavor of the steak. Plus, the bacon vinaigrette went very well with the entire meal. We were incredibly impressed with the meal and the atmosphere, and we'd join again for sure. The area in which our experience lacked was the service, which was disappointing and didn't make us feel great ordering anything else. After we got our appetizers, and then entree, we were not checked on once and I had to wave down our server for another round of drinks. At the same time, he was supposed to get us a water refill which we never ended up getting. Our server didn't mention anything in regards to a birthday, never asked how our cocktails or food was, checked on every table around us (besides us) and we didn't even get a thank you as we passed him heading out the door. Because I've consistently heard amazing things about Laurelhurst, I'll take this as a fluke because I definitely believe in second chances, especially when the food was that good, but I hope the next server we get is more attentive and friendly. We had intended to go to another place for dinner but when they turned us away we found our self at Laurelhurst Market. We were sat outside in their tented area. The atmosphere was great BUT there were two tables who were just letting their young kids run around. While this is a family friendly spot it is a nicer restaurant and I would have expect better. I know that is a tough spot to put waiters and waitresses in but it was very loud and disruptive. We had two drinks each, a cheese and meat board, steaks and dessert. The food was amazing. Food itself was delicious and steak was cooked the way we requested. Portion size seemed a little small once the dishes arrived but it ended up being just the right amount for us. The Monsignor Murphy is probably the best Reuben in Portland. I've tried every one that has been recommended. House made pastrami was moist and flavorful and melded well w/ the melted Swiss, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. The Como bread (a rustic Italian hearth bread) was lightly toasted to perfection! The star was the pastrami which reminded me of East Coast Reubens in NYC and Baltimore. Thin cut and flavorful clearly getting a sandwhich from a deli/ butcher shop was the right call. I unfortunately have as in a rush it had to take everything to go, but the sandwich held together pretty well though I did start eating it on my way home Next time I hope to have more time stay so I can stay and grab a beer as well since it's seems like a neat place with seating inside and outside (in a nice covered patio). Goose Hollow Inn is one that everyone swears by and it's pretty good. Edelweiss is okay but I'll give them another shot. Charlie's deli in Chinatown is okay. Wasn't wild about Annie's, Horse Brass Pub, Kenny and Zukes (gone anyways), etc. I know I've tried others, but then come to mind at the moment. If anyone has a recommendation for an East Coast style Reuben feel free to send me a note and I'll check them out if I haven't already. read more
