    Salmon hash
    Lauren F.

Healthy | friendly staff | Allergy friendly So happy to have found this place! I feel so seen at this allergy friendly spot: gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free, and seed oil free! That is rare! Come here to eat healthy real food. It's a cute little cafe where you order first and then sit down. Bus your table after. The staff is friendly and their menu is excellent! I had a hard time picking what to eat, but I ended up going with the salmon salad. The person at the front said their popular items are the waffles and borscht. Both sound delicious, so maybe I'll try it next time. Their menu is unique and not the usual selection on a lunch menu, like a deli sandwich. Every plate is presented beautifully too. They put my large salmon salad on a bed of lettuce and topped it with beets, pomegranate, a radish, and what looked like flower petals/buds. I saved 1/4 of my lunch to-go. My husband had their salmon hash with potatoes, and let me tell you, that egg on top looked delicious. I saw some other folks ordering that, so it seems like a popular item on the menu too. We also ordered the matcha latte with coconut milk and the Bastion pink latte. Bastion pink latte is tasty and healthy (beets, cherry, maple syrup, ginger, and substituted with coconut milk). No caffeine though! I loved my matcha latte because it wasn't too bitter and not too sweet (I had honey for sweetener), but it was creamy and delicious with the coconut milk. The salmon is excellent, not too smokey.

What a cool place. I met a friend here for a late lunch on a weekday and I was surprised how busy it was. We ordered at the counter and the service was helpful and friendly. The acorn waffles were delicious and the chicken salad wasn't bad. I was happy they had sparkling wine on offer as well as some intriguing hot beverages. Also, it is gluten free! I'll be able to return with friends who need that option.

Came to Bastion on the Friday after Thanksgiving with my sister. My sister has known she's had celiac since she was little - and I naturally steer towards a gluten free diet. I got the: * Energizing Matcha Latte w/ coconut milk and honey - amazing. Good quality matcha - no upset tummy * Salmon Salad / half pint: deliciously shredded Salmon, a light and fueling oil dressing blend, pumpkin seeds, celery - very good, very fueling! I didn't have my sisters food / she did love the fried chicken just didn't vibe with the flavor profiles of the waffle and the side addition of bell peppers

Amazing! The food is so fresh, the ingredients are high quality, the GF bread is incredible and they were even sweet enough to bring out some salmon for our dog. It's a very small establishment so you may be waiting awhile for your food or to find a place to sit, but it is 100% worth the wait. Highly recommend!

Favorite brunch in Portland! Love that you don't have to worry about many allergens (all gluten, dairy, and seed oil free!) and that the meals are balanced to provide plenty of veggies and protein (founded by a nutritionist!). The flavors are there too!! The acorn and sweet potato waffles are my favorite on the menu along with the pink latte. I've also tried their chicken soup and smoked salmon bagel-- both were amazing! The only thing that would make it better would be if the side salad dressing had more acidity or saltiness-- it was mostly oil, like it wasn't mixed well. Service is great, outdoor seating is nice, food is amazing. I'll be back a million times.

Just one foot in the door is all it takes to know that this is a place of Goodness. I came here for the Salmon Hash and it was just as good as I'd hoped for. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Service was super friendly. Now one of my favorite breakfast spots!

Cozy little spot feels like the epitome of Portland with friendly vibes, charming baked goods behind glass, freshly made chicken broth to take home, gluten free everything, and seasonal harvest ingredients.

I was in this place when it was satellite dream pizza. Has the same comfortable, welcoming vibes now as then, and that probably has to do more with the people here than the place itself, bastian is gluten-, dairy- and a few other things free; largely vegan/vegetarian but they have meat and eggs. I like this approach, focusing on food allergies while leaving the rest of the food field open. These folks are committed to what they serve, offering loaves of their own gluten free breads. I had the fried chicken sandwich, looked small but filling, crispy and moist chicken, and hte side salad so fresh and iceberg-free. Friendly service, very good coffee and berry crumble.

Cool cafe built into an old house on the North end of Sellwood... awesome vibe and excellent food. Had the salmon salad, and my partner had the gazpacho. Both were excellent and came with this amazing bread baked locally.... bought a loaf and ate as toast for a few days as well. Great spot. Would be perfect if they had wifi (cell signal is terrible inside for some reason).

This 100% gluten free spot is an amazing lunch choice. Employees are super friendly and seating is plentiful when the weather is warm enough to sit outdoors. I got the fried chicken sandwich. The seeded bread had such good texture and the chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I also got a berry smoothie and it was alright but I'm also not a huge fan of banana and that is the base for all of their smoothies.

A bright and light space with limited seating and a patio outside. I'd go earlier if you can to try and snag a coveted inside table. The service was lovely and they explained everything beautifully. You order at the counter and then find a seat. You can even buy some of the amazing bread there too! The sand which I had was on some hearty bread and came with a gorgeous light salad. The root vegetables dish was incredible. We got some dill aioli on the side and it really ramped it up. Looking forward to returning and trying their waffles!

This place is sooooooo good! Everything is gluten and dairy free and has grain-free options as well! I'm always looking for restaurants that have GF/DF options that taste good, and this was hands down one of the bests I've experienced! Also the staff were so friendly and helpful when ordering which made the experience even more enjoyable. Beautiful space and I usually don't comment on the music but they had some really good music playing the entire time we were there lol. I went with a big group and even the few people who weren't GF/DF really enjoyed their meals too! 10/10 and would highly recommend!

Id love to have given Bastion 3.5 stars. The service was great and incredibly friendly. The food and drinks looked amazing but the flavor was mixed. Highly recommend the pink latte, chicory and dandelion latte, and wild salmon bowl. 5 stars on all those. The fried chicken sandwich tasted good but was not worth the mess of the very soggy bottom bun. The pumpkin curry was fine but nothing special. I'd recommend it though. Fresh ingredients generally done well.

You can absolutely smell the fish and vinegar as soon as you walk through the door, which I think gives the place a very homey pub feel. I ordered a spiked peach Arnold Palmer, which I enjoyed (and it was pleasantly strong) and a glass of the house white, which was good for the price. Our server was very fast and attentive. To eat I got the tomato soup with a grilled cheese, which was absolutely fantastic. The soup was so creamy and flavorful, and I cannot imagine a better meal after spending all day walking outside in the rain. The fries were super crispy and I liked the batter. My partner and I shared some of their breadsticks, which were deliciously baked (fresh!) and came with a super refreshing basil crema and a nice tomato-y dip. Wonderful all. My partner ordered fish and chips, and was surprised to find that it is one large fillet of fish, not multiple pieces like you would typically expect. He said the fish was fine, but a little tough. Overall, a wonderful experience. I definitely hope to return. I highly recommend this place as a refuge during the cold winter months!

We were seated right away, wherever we wanted. I picked a shady indoor spot booth. I'm not sure, if it's the right booth, I then realized, they have the swings, by the window facing Burnside. I wanted to move, but hubby won't! No matter how much I begged, he ain't movin'. Then, I said: 'the music here is too loud.' His answer? 'There's always something!' So I stayed. I checked out the Patio. It might work, for the group. At least, there's one of us, who love alcohol. That may give them a reason to come. (She's driving the rest of the group). Since we are heading to an event, not far from here, we didn't have much time to take leftovers home, we didn't have a cooler, it's almost 80 degrees out, so we decided to eat something we could share. We picked the BBQ COHO Salmon Sandwich. Seared Coho salmon glazed with Bourbon BBQ sauce topped with baby Aragula and pickled red onions on a Portland French toasted potato bun. There's a $2 discount recess during happy hour (3-5pm). We were there at that time. (Is that the reason WHY the music were soo loud?) It was served with hand-cut fries. Both were just the perfect taste (delicious), and size for both of us. But, for some reason, I was still tempted to have something else. We looked at the desert menu, and decided on the Peach Crumble. Food taste so much better, when shared! Enough said. (We waited so long for this one, that we almost didn't made it to our event! We were enjoying our time here, that by the time we got to our car, we were rushing, and made it two minutes later we would have been late!) Negative: Music is too loud! Restroom could be improved. Do we need to see those words written on the board? I agree about ICE, but, that is not something we want to see.

It was a joy to drink and was a great start to a great evening. The Andrew's focaccia bread was buttery, salty and heavenly. The oil that came with it was an adventure in itself. Next, I had the Hamachi Crudo. This was one of the most delightful appetizers I have ever had. It was full of a dazzling array of flavors. Simple. Elegant. A feast for the senses. And a joy to eat! I would never think to assemble these ingredients in one dish, but the combination worked splendidly. The quality and freshness of the fish was outstanding. For the entrée I had the Halibut.
