Fantastic brunch experience! We came by on a Sunday and it was understandably busy. We waited about 20 mins for a table outside with our dog. The host and staff were so friendly and sweet. We were well taken care of. I ordered the scramble and they were able to accommodate my subsititon requests. The omelet was good and the hashbrowns were buttery but I really enjoyed my partner's chilaquiles! I'm picky about my chilaquiles and def ordering that next time. We visited Redwood Café this morning for a work meeting and had a very pleasant experience overall. The service stood out right away; everyone was extremely friendly, engaging, and accommodating, which made it a great spot for a relaxed business breakfast. The menu is unique and creative, and overall the food was quite good. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, which was flavorful but lighter on protein than I expected. To be fair, they did ask if I wanted to add protein, but I misunderstood and didn't realize it only came with eggs and black beans by default. The rest of our group tried a variety of dishes, albacore salad, Cubano eggs, Benedict; with mostly positive feedback across the board. Prices were very reasonable, especially for the quality and portion sizes. When we arrived, the café was pretty empty, but it filled up quickly as we got closer to 10 a.m., which speaks to its popularity. Yummy! First time in for brunch with the sisters and enjoyed! Our server was super friendly and brought us some complimentary Fritters (both the Blueberry and corn) both of which were yummy. I think the corn was my favorite. It had a bit of jalapeño and cheese. We ordered the blueberry French toast which was thick and yummy. I ordered the fresh mozzarella sandwich. It was good although I didnt ask for bacon and it was made with it. Not a big deal as I do eat meat and was good with it, but minor miss there. Fries were just ok, a tad dry. Everything from the warm, cozy vibe inside (actually, way more lounge-y than cottage-y but Im totally cool with that) to the right-there but never pushy server, to the above-par coffee was a real treat. I ordered the Veggie Hash and while the portion felt a bit on the small side (maybe I should get the potato pancakes instead of the corn tortillas as a side next time), the goods hit where it counts. Lovely over-medium eggs over a bunch of Yukon gold potatoes with some kale, shrooms and onions made for a nice hearty start to the day. Like others have observed here, seasoning was definitely lacking, but I got no problem using a salt shaker when push comes to shove. All in all a pleasant experience. read more

Had a mango pineapple mimosa. When I couldn't taste the mango they brought me more puree to add to my drink. My friends got pineapple mango margaritas. If Portland was to have yet another nickname to it would be "brunch city." Despite being so popular I usually don't share the enthusiasm with the rest. I think the main reason is typically no matter where you to go brunch, it is relatively the same menu, avocado toast, eggs benedict, omelets, etc, and while some places might be their own twist on this dishes they still don't excite me. However, upon briefly looking at the menu here, I saw numerous dishes that piqued my interest We started with the corn fritters as an appetizer, and they were a delightful surprise! The sweet ones with blueberry and lemon curd were a perfect balance of flavors, and the savory corn and cheddar with buffalo sauce was incredibly satisfying. For our mains, my husband had the trout hash, and I opted for the veggie hash. Both were incredibly flavorful and filling, and I even got two decent meals out of mine! My mom went the YOLO route, and had a lemon cheesecake with berry compote. Our server had to keep a watchful eye on us, as every time my mom turned her back we would steal bites. But excellent bacon, hash browns and other deliciousness. It's on the side of town that is closest to Mount Hood and the gorge. It's not too crowded. Day 2 on our itinerary had us going to Redwood for breakfast. When planning the itinerary, I found Redwood as one of the top rated breakfast/brunch establishments on Yelp. With three rumbling (hungry) tummies, we made the 20 minute drive to the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by an employee who sat us outside (per our request), turned on the table heater (it was a fairly nippy morning), and provided menus. Roughly five minutes later our friendly server (I cannot recall her name) came by to provide us with waters, coffee, and to take our orders. Per our server's recommendation, I ordered the Bacon Arugula Scramble with a Redwood Original (one of the beauties of being on vacation is being able to have a morning bourbon). My wife ordered the famous loaded hash browns with a Bloody Mary, and my son ordered the Fresh Mozzarella scramble with a hot chocolate. Approximately 15 minutes later our visually appealing orders were being delivered to our table. My son absolutely loved his order, which was doused in ketchup (I remember having a phase as a child where I put ketchup on everything). Also, his hot chocolate with a birthday cake-ish froth was absolutely delicious (he "allowed" me to have a sip). As for my wife and I...our food looked good, but did not taste the part. Everything was fresh, but the food lacked seasoning. I understand that some folks prefer to season their food with what is available at their table; however, the kind of seasoning that I am referring to needs to be done during the preparation of the meal. Although the food was not as good as it could have been, overall we were satisfied with our experience and the customer service provided. Our server was very attentive and did a great job of checking in on us without hovering. A bit more variety on the breakfast side of the menu than the lunch, both served all day. Habanero infused vodka, pineapple, lemon sour, coconut cream and muddled basil. This was rich and delicious with a little kick. My partner ordered up the Fritters. The blueberry fritters pair with lemon curd and the cheddar-corn pair with the chili vinegar. These were delicious whether you're craving sweet or savory. Exceeded my expectations. For my meal, I order the Huevos Rancheros. Three Sisters corn tortillas, black beans, two eggs (I ordered over easy) roasted poblano sauce, crema, queso fresco, and escabeche. I like the addition of the spicy carrots on the side. This was delish. Ingredients were fresh and flavors were a fusion of traditional with a slight twist. Staff was fast and efficient despite it nearing the end of the brunch hours. I get why this spot is popular and I could easily see myself upping this to 5 stars on a subsequent visit. read more

A good friend suggested we try Redwood for brunch and I'm so glad we did! Since it was a sunny day in the 70s, the covered patio was perfect. The coffee was excellent, my friend got a Bloody Mary, she said it was decent, but not amazing. The food, however, was great! I had a side of the Beyond vegan sausage, a side of hash browns and a cornmeal biscuit, which was really like cornbread. They were all super flavorful. The hash browns were so delicious I didn't need ketchup and the cornmeal biscuit was great with some jam. My friend had the vegan hash and said it was very good. Service was excellent, with multiple servers checking on everyone. All of the servers were super friendly and had a nice, positive vibe! I moved to Portland, in part, for its amazing food scene. Unfortunately, I'm in the far-eastern hinterlands of Portland, and the options for good food out here are limited. For this reason, I am deeply, DEEPLY grateful for the amazing oasis of fresh, tasty, from-scratch cooking that is Redwood! If you're a fan of brunch (and who isn't?), and if you like good food and well-done cocktails, Redwood is easily your best option in the Montavilla area (and for quite a wide radius around, to be honest). Nothing they do is bad, but some of my favorites include any/all of their benedict dishes, their burger, and their chicken sandwich (called "spice spice baby" on the menu) in all of its permutations. Their dessert specials are great, too. If they happen to have the coconut cake when you're there, get it! It's light, fluffy, moist, and A-MAY-ZING! They do great cheesecake too! The folks at Redwood take great care to get little things right. Their house-made salad dressings are all fantastic and flavorful, and they have awesome french fries! I've eaten here more than at any other Portland restaurant, and it's my preferred place to take friends and family when they visit. Give Redwood a shot. You'll be glad you did! read more

The Redwood has a casual and cozy feeling with attentive staff and outdoor dining for our sunny days. We tried the Huevos Rancheros and their collard greens. The collard greens were meatless and had a pleasant zip of pickling spice. They weren't prepared the way we normally have them down south. So the one of us that was looking for hearty southern style enjoyed them but probably would pass on them next time, but our Northern Adventurer was delighted and would definitely get them again. The Huevos Rancheros were very nicely done. They were beautifully plated, had a mild flavor to the sauce and very spicy pickled veggies on the side if you want to spice it up. I came at 10 am on a Sunday, it was very busy inside and outside. There is outdoor seating with heaters on the tables which was greatly appreciated. We were told the wait time would be 45 minutes and we ended up waiting almost an hour and forty five minutes. Once seated we ordered immediately, I got the "Spice, Spice, Baby" fried chicken sandwich with potato pancakes on the side. I loved the crunch on the potato pancakes, I would definitely get that again. I appreciated the pickled vegetables on the side for the added tangy flavor. But these... they were juuuuuuuust right, Goldilocks!
