Came to the Bellwether for our Babymoon. The place is right on the beach which made us pick it. Getting to the hotel was a bit frustrating since there aren't any left hand turn lanes, so had to do a turn around in a neighborhood to get to the other side of the street. Parking is very small in front of the hotel but there is a lot in the lower level. Lower level kind of creepy looking and dark/dingy. Checking in was easy and the staff was nice. Water jug is by the lobby for a quick drink. Love the vibe of the hotel - retro but updated and colorful. We got an oceanfront view on the third floor, so palm trees were blocking our view. So if you get oceanfront, then try to get a floor that's higher than three. If you are on the southwest side you hear the music of Bongos restaurant until 11p each night. There was a nice balcony attached to the room, but the air conditioner unit was blowing hot air while you were sitting. You are able to have your porch door open and ac running at the same time. Fan in the room was nice. Shutters are a classy touch but windows themselves are old. The toilet in the room was bubbling throughout our stay, so the bathroom had a gross smell. The toilet pressure was horrible, and there were hard water marks all over the shower. Complimentary snow cones on Saturdays from 1-2p at the St. Pete Social in lobby. They are small but a nice gesture. Bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. Nice to have a refrigerator in the room. Towels for the pool and beach were constantly restocked. Never was a pile of old towels either. Maintenance folks were really on it. One guy was touchup painting the hallways, while another guy was cleaning the rugs to get rid of the sand. Get to the beach early to rent your cabana or chairs. You can hold your cabana for a few hours but if you don't come back then you lose it. There is a volleyball court and some other beach games. You can order food and drink from your cabana and it comes from the attached hotel restaurant, Bongos (their food isn't great). Spinners restaurant, level 11, and the St Pete Social in the lobby are all worth checking out for food. Skip bongos though, being on the beach is nice but their food is subpar. The water and beach is amazing and that is what you are paying for. The pool area is nice and has loungers and other seating areas to relax. read more

We had a great stay for a girls weekend at the Bellwether. The hotel was nice and convenient. Rooms were clean and updated. Staff was friendly. My only reason for 4 stars vs 5 is the craziness to get a cabana/umbrella. You have to be up and downstairs extra early to reserve. It would be nice to have the option to register the night before and have the spots set up and reserved. read more

We've stayed at this resort twice before when it was the Grand Plaza, and the last time was a bit of a let down as it had gone downhill some, so I was a bit leery when I made our reservation at the Bellwether. But, due to sentimental value (we originally stayed here on our honeymoon) and the fact that it was redone and it looked so beautiful we wanted to give it a chance! We're SO glad that we did! Check in was at 4pm but we had gotten into town early and didn't have any more time to kill, so we headed to the resort at 3pm. We had no trouble finding a spot to park, and there was valet as an option. The lobby is beautiful and bright with a retro Florida vibe. The front desk clerk was so friendly, noted that we were early but went ahead and verified our reservation, issued our parking pass, and told us they'd contact us when our room was ready. We headed down to Bongos for some food and drinks, and got a text at 3:15 our room was already available. When I had booked the stay (we chose the partial gulf view king) I requested a high floor on the side by Bongos so we could hear the nightly music. They delivered on both and put us in room 812. There was no wait for the elevator, and the hallways were clean and redecorated as well. We were so happy when we walked into our room. It was beautiful, spotlessly clean and even smelled good. Even the patio chairs were cute. It was a complete 180 from the outdated and aging decor of the Grand Plaza. The bed was extremely comfortable, and they had two different types/densities of pillows to use. We really liked the USB plug ins in the bedside tables. As many times as we came and went we never had trouble finding parking, and we only had to wait a few minutes for an elevator. There were always clean fresh towels by the pool, the pool was clean and spotless and the cabanas were easy to rent. When it came time to check out, it was an absolute breeze. There was no wait, the total was exactly what was quoted from the original reservation, and they just emailed us the receipt. We're so happy we gave the Bellwether a chance, and are already looking at dates for our next trip here! The ONLY suggestion I have is to bring back the full menu for room service like the Grand Plaza used to have! It was so nice to be able to have the mixed drinks/frozen drinks and a more full menu (including great breakfast options) delivered! We really missed that this trip and would have spent considerably more money at the resort if that was an option. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Bellwether from Aug 8-Aug 11, 2024 to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary. We booked a direct beach view room online for a pretty good discount (40% off promotion). Overall: It was fine...we made the best of it. Probably won't stay here again tho. Be diligent with your research! Pros: -LOCATION! Directly on the beach. Can't beat it. -Amazing direct view of the beach. Awesome for sunrise and sunset watching -Onsite restaurants + bars -Great drinks! Food was slightly above average -Resort fee included cabanas, beach towels and poolside/beachside services -Helpful staff. The front desk associate allowed us to check in early and waived the $75 early check-in fee for us. We arrived around 11:30am and our room was ready within the next hour. She also extended our check-out to 12pm. Our bathroom sink wasn't draining and the front desk was able to get someone to fix it within the hour. I was also in contact with the concierge leading up to our trip - he provided a lot of information re: room upgrades, private car service options, excursion options, etc. He answered many questions and helped coordinate special happy anniversary decor. However, it was $50 for flower petals scattered on the bed and I assumed they'd use real flowers considering the price, but it was the fake paper/plastic petals. I honestly could have gone to the dollar store and done it myself. Alas, here we are. It looked cute, at least. My only con re: staff is I wish they were more transparent with the elevators and conditions of the hotel. Cons: -DO NOT BOOK "FREE" 25 MIN SUNSET PHOTOSHOOT THE HOTEL ADVERTISES. The sign is misleading stating "minimum of $35 purchase." Psh, packages started at $199....Total scam. I believe it was 8 photos for $199, 13 photos for $299 and all photos for $399 (for us we shot 177 photos) plus tax/tip - all packages included edits. So unreasonable and pressures people to purchase the highest package obviously because it's more "bang for your buck." JC Penny quality/vibe shoot, kinda cheesy. Photographer used a ring light AND flash while we shot outside with beautiful natural lighting (it washed out the sunset). Photos were fine......but honestly wouldn't have paid more than $100 for it based on quality. My husband and I are truly embarrassed we fell for this and did not push back. Nice photographer, but not worth it esp considering he didn't tell us the cost until AFTER we looked through the photos and asked us to mark out favorites. He knew what he was doing lol. Looking back I should have asked what the pricing was prior to the actual shoot cause then we wouldn't have wasted our time with it. It was unlike me to do so, but I guess I had a few drinks at that point and did not do my research. I assumed it would be priced significantly lower. That's how they get ya. -Elevators were not in service. There was a hurricane the weekend prior to our stay so the staff told us that the elevator flooded from the storm so guests had to use the tiny service elevator or the stairs. Our room was on the 8th floor. This didn't bother us too much cause at least the service elevator was working, but this became really inconvenient when large groups of people + staff were all waiting for it. There was a wedding on Aug 10 and we felt so bad for all the bride/groom, their guests and vendors who had to deal with that. On our last day, we heard from a staff member that the elevators have actually been broken for 2 weeks and NOT from the storm a few days prior. This seemed pretty ridiculous that it wasn't fixed sooner ESPECIALLY knowing there was an upcoming wedding. -Multiple ceiling leaks in the main lobby. Very awkward to walk through. I truly can't say enough good things about the beautiful Bellwether Beach Resort. My mom and I (teachers from IN) stayed here during Fall Break for my birthday. Everything about this resort was above and beyond. Our room was gorgeous and extremely clean. The staff, especially Sean and his front desk staff, were beyond fantastic. Food here was fabulous. All the employees were friendly, fun and made us feel like family. We already booked AGAIN for our next vacation. Thank you, Bellwether family for making us feel so welcome. Best vacation EVER!!! They even delivered chocolate cake to our room for my birthday. LOVE this place and can't wait to come back for many years ahead!! read more

Recently returned from a stay at this hotel. What a terrific hotel !! Even before our arrival we received a text message from the concierge about restaurants and things to do .A classy gesture . We had a double king room with a partial ocean view that exceeded expectations . The hotel sits right on the beach and access to the pool and beach are steps away . There's is an upscale restaurant on the property with amazing views and a cool beachfront cafe with simpler fare and music. The place is clean and ever person there was friendly and helpful . I can't compliment the staff enough . If there were two minor blemishes it was the lack of everyday cleaning the rooms (it's every 3 days) but they will empty trash and supply fresh towels you just have to ask . There was a wedding the day we got there and parking was crazy but there were no issues after that night . Quite often a hotel stay is one and done Not here We'd love to go back . read more

2 Stars is kind of generous but it's still a beautiful place but that's the only compliment I can still give. Went to a wedding here over the summer and it has gone downhill so much since 2016 when it was the Grand Plaza. 1. It was at least 90° in the ground floor lobby AND the main ballroom! It was miserable. If you're a wedding venue in Florida the absolute #1 thing you need is good air conditioning! It was more comfortable in the full sun outside in June. 2. The food, bad. I don't expect great food at weddings but the mahi was inedible. It was so dry it was like cardboard. 3. The elevators. Not only were they soooo slow, but at least 1 was stuck with people inside multiple times just in the 5 hours we were there! And you don't even want to know how hot it was in those. Resort is nice but had some issues while there. Ice maker on floor didn't work. Hotel Door wouldn't shut unless you slammed it. Shower door wouldn't stay closed. Got charged for a chair at beach that they gave to someone else even though we were right next to the stand. Beach bar draft beers didn't work and they had like no wine. Hotel rooms are nice. We had an amazing time celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary at this boutique resort. Everyone was so accommodating and happy to assist. Not one negative vibe! Even the other guests were kind and pleasant. Bongos did not disappoint with food or cocktails omg the best! Spinners was a cool experience. Only complaint is one elevator worked but the wait time wasn't too bad. Hubby said the grounds could have been maintained better as it relates to pressure washing some areas and a bit of grass growing up on the patio but it didn't bother me. OAN the daily resort fee was more than worth the value. Great views. We will be back! read more

The staff at the Bellwether is amazing. We loved Bongos (the beach bar) and Keith, the bartender, is awesome. Bongos has good food, a lot of fun drink options and the tables on the beach are the perfect place to watch the sun set. The coffee bar in the lobby is great for breakfast.  However, the pictures online make the hotel seem a lot nicer than it actually is. The pool area is tiny compared to what it looks like online. The complimentary cabanas are not really cabanas. We pictured cabanas with beds, cushions, curtains/tent, etc. but the "cabanas" were just pool chairs with a blue awning.  The hotel offers a "free" 25 minute photoshoot with a photographer. We fully assumed that we would have to pay for the photos themselves, but they were way more expensive than we anticipated. It was $399 (plus tax and tip) for all of the photos (600+) or $299 (plus tax and tip) for 12 photos. That's a big jump from 600+ to 12 with no option in between.  Housekeeping is supposed to come every other day, but we were there from Thursday to Sunday and housekeeping never came. read more

We booked a rehearsal dinner at Bellweather (Bongos) and we're extremely pleased. We had a party of about 24 people and I'm amazed at how many people told me how good the food was. Usually for weddings/rehearsal dinners, especially buffet style, sometimes the "quality" of the food isn't great. The exact opposite here. The Bellwether is a revolving restaurant with a great view of the Gulf of Mexico and food to match. Our party of four had grouper. chicken, mac and cheese with lobster and ravioli -- all delicious -- plus asparagus and Yukon mash potato sides that were easily suitable for four. Stayed here for 5 nights in late September based on a Travelzoo recommendation. Apparently this property (which I believe was a Holiday Inn), was remodeled in the last couple of years. While this is not a posh 5 star resort, it is a solid 4 star property which isn't trying to pretend it's anything other than what it is. Located on a beautiful stretch of St. Petersburg beach, it offers plenty of available cabanas on the sand as well as a nice pool area. There is also Bongos beach bar located right on the edge of the sand which features live music. The rooms were fairly roomy, and tastefully appointed as well as clean. Staff was extremely pleasant and accommodating. There is a revolving restaurant on the roof, which I can't vouch for. Really couldn't find a thing to complain about. If I were heading back to this general area, I would not hesitate to stay here again. read more

Our stay over the July 4th holiday (2023) was disappointing. The Bellwether building has a cylindrical shape, with two elevators. One elevator has been down all week, and it was probably down well before we arrived. This has caused everyone to fight for position on "the" elevator, along with very long wait times. And, the elevator that does work has an interior temperature of about 120 degrees. The parking spaces in the main parking lot couldn't be any more narrow; you may want to leave your nice car at home, since you're guaranteed to have multiple dings and dents if you park here. You also may need to exit through your sun roof, if the cars to your right and left aren't perfectly centered in their spaces. Also, housekeeping service was a joke. There was evidence that someone came to the room a couple times during the week, but nothing was replenished, with only a weak effort to tidy-up one of the two beds. They're also apparently rationing toilet paper (?!?!?), which was a Covid-era thing that I thought we had figured out by now. This is not a premium priced resort, so I didn't come into this with ultra-high expectations, but it would have been nice to not have my intelligence insulted to this degree. read more

We stayed at Bellwether to celebrate our 30th. The advance call from the concierge enabled me to have champagne, flowers, and a note awaiting our arrival. Nicely done. Liked the renovation to lobby from our prior trip there. I grade on the COVID curve and appreciate the staff who were clearly working hard, including the beach staff. I do miss the interior breakfast option, with the outdoor eating area the only full-service option. We will visit again. read more

We stayed at the Bellwether in August of 2024. Both the main elevators were shut down due to mechanical problems. Only the one tiny service elevator was working. We were on the 9th floor and had to wait, sometimes fifteen or more minutes, for the elevator to stop on our floor. Our room, a Bay View room, was horrible. We kept hearing a thumping sound. We thought it was the motor that turns Spinner's restaurant, but not sure. It was very loud and very annoying. There was a sofa/trundle bed in the room, but the TV was not visible from it. We had to sit on the bed to watch the TV, which was very uncomfortable. The bathroom was okay, but there was absolutely nowhere to place anything by the sink. Whoever designed the room did not think about how people, especially women, travel with toiletries, makeup and such. This was my first visit to the hotel since it was the Grand Plaza Beach resort. It's been horribly remodeled. They removed the nice restaurant where breakfast was served every morning and replaced it with a small coffee/ sandwich shop that doesn't even have seating, except for one small table and a couple of chairs. The lobby has been redone, though not well. It's much smaller. Nowhere for people to sit like there used to be, just one small couch across from the elevators in a narrow hallway. Honestly, it was a much nicer hotel when it was the Grand Plaza Beach Resort. They may have remodeled, but the amenities and the staff is not as friendly and the customer service left a lot to be desired. I will not stay there again, sad to say. Had a great stay here in terms of this hotel's location, uniqueness, interiors and room decor. Most of all, it was the staff here. All were so nice and pleasant. I am a single male looking for a great hotel each early summer for some much needed r&r. I love Florida's gulf coast and each year I stay at a different hotel/resort in different areas. I chose The Bellwether this year and was not disappointed. The pool deck needs work and a portion of it was closed off. There is no hot tub. Pool water was green the whole time I was there. I never used it unfortunately. The Bongos beach bar was mediocre. Kind of raw and messy. But the bar and bfast/lunch f&b there were very good. Again, awesome staff and great spot for a bar, live music and maybe a beach burger with your toes in the sand under the palm trees. Has beach service right out front and I spent my 4 days mostly there enjoying the relaxation, the warm gulf water and cool powdery sands. The complimentary cabinette and loungers each day were great and you can even order cocktails service and food right from your chaise. As for the hotel itself, it was a cool vintage place but could definitely use some work. One out of two elevators broke down the day I checked in so we all had to use one and that was a hassle. Plus there was no a/c in the elevator or the hallways, it seemed. My 9th floor room with a balcony was just amazing! It was a chilly 65 degrees in my room which was refreshing after the hot elevator and hallway. I had a million dollar view of the sunset each evening. The room was appointed nicely, it was bright and airy and clean. I hated the single pouch coffee maker. But each morning after enduring two tasteless cups of room coffee, I'd go down to the lobby and buy a delicious cup of a lg cappuccino or latté at the snack/coffee shoppe. The double-bed room had a very comfy bed and had a lg tv. Housekeeping was daily even though front desk said it's every other day upon check in. So that was great. Extra waters, soaps, coffee pouches etc restocked daily. I even got towel sea shells on my bed one night. Stay here for the location, uniqueness and great guest service from the friendly staff! When we arrived the pool was closed and the elevators were out of service. My wife has a torn meniscus and so we had to use the service elevator with all the other guests. The hotel did not let anyone know about the repairs and lack of services. House keeping is every other day due to lack of staff. Wife went to get a latte at the coffee bar and the server said "that's not a coffee "phew. When I spoke to the desk manager,Sean, he accused my wife of being abusive. He did comp the first night and remove all fees. But his attitude was not appreciated nor appropriate. In addition when my wife called the front desk to request housekeeping he called me Bach to tell me that my wife cannot call the desk as he told all employees to refuse to talk to her.The hotel was built in 1975 and it showed. It is in serious need of a refurbishment and the hallways need air conditioning. All in all I wouldn't stay here again nor recommend it to anyone. read more

Our stay here was very interesting. We've stayed several other times when it was previously The Grand Plaza. We were highly let down with the menu changes to Bongos. It used to be our favorite place to dine and we'd go there several nights during our trip. The aesthetic of the hotel is very cool but I do unfortunately feel they lost some of the basics in the reno. Our room was quite filthy upon check-in. Room service brought us a vacuum and we cleaned it up. Part of the reason why I give three stars is because the man at the front desk was extremely kind and he did give us a night off of our stay for the cleaning inconvenience. One of the showers started to overflow because there was so much hair stuck in the drain. They pulled the hair out but left the chunk sitting in the shower. They do not clean the rooms everyday you are there and the garbages in the room are very small. I'd probably stay again because the view from the room is absolutley incredible. The pool could use some updating and in the renovations it seems as though some of the chairs around the pool are now gone so you do have to get there early. We were also awoken one night in the middle of the night to the fire alarm going off and we had to exit the building. read more

Don't waste your money. The only good thing I am giving a 1 star to is to their location. The woman at front desk when trying to get room service was confrontational and rude. Told me I had my Do Not Disturb up which is a total lie as I had it in my purse the entire stay because another guest told me they did the same thing to them. I even marked my sign. She told me she had time stamped proof, so I went down and called her out. She could not provide the proof which she rudely and adamantly told me she had over the phone. The cabanas cannot be used if it is a little windy. The guy working it said they were not quality when I asked why every other resort had theirs up. 11 days we got to get out of sun for a total of maybe 3. Booked because of cabanas. Disappointing to say the least. Partial Ocean View room.... yes you can see ocean but you cannot hear waves from balcony because of the placement of their AC units. Not worth the money. Do more research. You can stay cheaper and better elsewhere. read more

At first this resort seemed to be a nice place to stay. Being on the beach was a big attraction as well as the pool. It was cold so we did not end up using the pool. However, would have loved a hot tub which was non existent. There is a fridge but no microwave so we needed to eat out for each meal which was less than ideal. There were ants in the bathroom that seemed to live in the sink. They did give a bucket for ice but did not have an ice maker. The coffee shop was nice to have some coffee on the beach, however, was more expensive than Starbucks. $7 for a coffee. Perks included water bottles in the room and pumps full of soap, shampoo, and conditioner. It was not a horrible place to stay but like other reviews stated could use improvement. read more

No words. Our go to place for every occasion from birthdays. To anniversaries to our recent renewal of wedding vows. This is where you want to be. We start by having a cup of cappuccino and pastry while we are waiting to check in for a room. Once the room is ready we settle our bags in and we go have lunch at bongos Beach Bar and grill outside of the hotel where your feet hits the sand while you have a cocktail in your hand and a hamburger in the other. Then take a walk along the beach while you are planning dinner plans which always end up being at spinners upstairs at their rotating restaurant. As the finale we go to the 11th floor lounge for our final nightcap. You can do all of this within one day and then have a beautiful night sleep and wake up and do it all over again to make for the perfect weekend. The manager Shaun is quite welcoming to the check-in person whose name is Lee who is very accommodating especially on the phone as you make a reservation. Down to Geoffrey the concierge who for quite a few years now makes day you spend there more accommodating than the next. Our wedding vows on the beach will be memorable in our hearts forever. Lots of hidden fees, $200 report fee for what???, food here was insane $72 for 2 burgers & 2 drinks. mixed drinks $14 each. $5 coke, $10 for a bagel. room is dated & needs an upgrade. It was ok for a few days but if your staying a week don't recommend. pool was so dirty we didn't get in it. As high as it was to stay here they should keep pool up. Overcharfed us $150, we just happen to catch it. Just a bit disappointed. Would still recommend just beware read more

where to begin??? Stay away!!! it's too much money for zero ac in the elevators and hallways!!! Florida is too hot for no AC. My wedding had crashers and after I set up a table for the vendors with the coordinator, they ate in my room. I spend months planning my wedding with every detail simply ignored the day of the wedding. Not to mention zero housekeeping the whole week I was there and I had to ask for it. This hotel was previously the Grand, but they renovated. However, in dressing up the hotel, they forgot basics like offering room service and steaming on the hotel TV. It feels like they attempted to distract you from their limited offerings with colorful decor. It doesn't work. They should've dedicated more money where it matters. Stay somewhere else. read more

I just stayed at the Bellwether hotel this past weekend and was very dissatisfied with the room and hotel. The elevators were not working. Everyone that was staying at the hotel had to use the very small service elevator. Yes, elevator (1). The main elevator was going only to the top restaurants and not to any floor from 2 to 9. The day of arrival on Saturday, August 10 there was a wedding going on and all these people that were not staying at the hotel but going to the restaurants took all the parking stops. We had to park in the downstairs garage and carry all our bags to the receptionist area. Needless to say that I had knee surgery and had to walk up and down the stairs to get around. Not fun when you just paid $1600 for a suite overlooking the beach and the employees can't help you at all. I left yesterday and so happy to be home. I have to say that my first time here was 2 years ago and It was a pleasure. They closed down after that so They "renovated" so they say, but the suite floor was dirty and the shower was as well. For the amount they charged me, the least they could have done was given me a discount. ALSO - do not book any activities through the hotel as they will not refund you any money. Because of all the walking up and down stairs and the extreme 102 weather, I fainted about 2 hours prior to my departure to go on a 3 hour boat ride. My husband asked because of the circumstances can we get a refund and flat stated NO. He contacted the boat company and they stated yes as it was not my fault. The hotel would not refund and stated that I should be happy that they will extend another day for the boat trip. I don't live in St. Pete. This was the worst 2 day vacation get away. This was our first time staying at a resort and I am not very happy about our stay this hotel need a lot of repairs and maintenance done The first night we was here we had to evacuate the building for about a hour then that same night the power went out and it was so hot in the room we had to open the patio door to get a little circulation in the room every time you go to the pool there was no towel the whole trip we was getting a message about something no room service because the phones don't work, the pool needs lots of work and was very dirty I went off of the reviews when I booked the room I am blown away about all the 5 star reviews all I have to say is they must never stayed in a real 5 star hotel!! I do not recommend this hotel resort It is not worth the money they charge and they add resort fees on top of that which would be ok if you actually get the resort amenities that they list that you get!! The hotel sits on a beautiful St. Pete Beach. My first initial reaction driving up is the entrance is very narrow and not easily accessible. Parking is very limited and they not offer valet service. The reception area is very small and shared the space with a walk up coffee bar. But the space is pretty and the employees are very nice. We booked a classic king room without a view. The room is just under $300 a night and resort fees are $50. When we checked in, the receptionist brought up the wrong reservation and i did not notice until I was signing paperwork and she ran my card. Needless to say, that concerned me. Right away I asked about the charges that might land on my card and reception said they canceled it. Later on that evening while visiting our son, I started getting alert from my bank about $50charges my card. About 5 of them. When returning to the hotel, they assured me they weren't charges, but pre authorizations. Was told to talk to the manager in the morning. I will update asap. Update: just checked out. No unauthorized charges. But, to continue on with our review. As soon as we got to the room, I checked to see if they had any available bigger Tommys, because ours was extremely small. Bathroom was tiny. No place to hang towels to dry or bathing suits. Plenty of towels though. The bed was a king and it was comfortable enough but the cover had stains on it. I also had to remake the bed because house keeping ALWAYS short sheets the bed. The beach was beautiful and staff was nice. But the hotel always had a distinct smell. Like a sewer backing up. Thee last day while in the shower, the toilet started making gurgling sounds and then the most horrendous smell came from the toilet! I had to get out right way or I was going to vomit! Over all, I will not be back. I know the hotel is on the older side, but it needs more than a rehab. Oh, forgot to mention the water running down between the floors near the elevator.
