    Old Granite Inn - Breakfast

The Old Granite Inn was recommended to us first-timers by locals living on Vinalhaven Island. They…read morecertainly did not mislead us! Ed and Joan, the Innkeepers, made us feel very welcome and were very informative. The location is perfect for anyone taking a morning Ferry to Vinalhaven or North Haven. It is also convenient for a walk through Rockland's beautiful downtown shopping area. Most of the rooms have a view of the harbor. We chose a room without that view but found it perfect for our one night stay. The room was spotless, had a comfortable bed, plenty of drawer space and a private bathroom. There is 24 hour coffee and tea station and a welcoming front room full of reading materials, games, and other interesting items. The front porch is another perfect place to relax and view the harbor. Ed is also the chef and served a wonderful breakfast of tomato and broccoli frittata, mixed fruit, fresh baked muffins and scones. Breakfast also included Ed's very tasty cornmeal pancakes, which I topped off with genuine Maine Maple syrup! We will become regulars as we return to Vinalhaven Island each year to visit our family. And have already recommended it to other family members headed to the island!

The breakfast alone is worth the stay. Rooms are minimalist but functional, beds are comfortable and the place is clean. I can only imagine what it takes to upkeep a place like this so hats off to Ed and Joan. My only comment would be the tv's could use an upgrade (it was tiny) ... not that we even turned it on. A Black Friday run for some flat screens would be a major value upgrade. We also loved that they were open to a one night stay (weeknight) , which is exactly what we needed. The few other places we called all had 2 night minimums which was pretty frustrating for a last minute weeknight escape.

They welcomed us to the Inn, gave us a tour and some fresh baked cookies. When we came downstairs in the morning Lauren had set out coffee and fresh baked crumpets. For breakfast she served overnight oats with chia seeds and blueberry compote followed by a tomato artichoke frittata and salad. Everything was excellent! Since we are avid hikers Greg recommended the Mount Battie trail which is within walking distance from the hotel. As we were heading off for our hike, Lauren provided us with more fresh baked cookies still warm from the oven. Greg and Lauren made us feel right at home as did their son Elliott. Elliott has a true entrepreneurial spirit and is very knowledgeable about the Inn and the area despite his young age. It was a pleasure staying here.

Do you want a delicious two course breakfast each morning (included in your stay) cooked according to your dietary needs? Do you want homemade cookies or brownie at the end of the day packaged and prepared just for you? Do you want to walk a couple of blocks to the charming downtown and waterfront of Camden? How about staying in a charming, quaint, and clean room or suite? How about a drink during happy hour at their cozy bar? Do you want to sit on their porch and read a book by the firepit? If so, make the reservation now! The Blue Harbor House is charming, romantic, and well maintained. My wife and I stayed here four nights recently and used this location to not only spend time in Camden, but to visit other nearby towns like Rockland, Bath, Brunswick, Rockport, and Belfast. Don't forget to visit the Cellar Door Winery in neighboring Lincolnville. Everything worked in our Snug Harbor Suite to perfection. Housekeeping did a great job each morning cleaning and replacing whatever was needed. The innkeepers, Matt and Michelle are warm and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. From the moment we booked our reservation, they began making us part of their family. Just talking to them and some of the other guests about life was relaxing and therapeutic. The price here is very reasonable and worth every penny. There is plenty of parking in their private parking lot. As I said earlier, there is no need to look any further.

We wanted to just love this place, but there were enough little problems to only rate it 3 stars…read more Parking is a HUGE problem. There are a limited amount of spaces in front with zero room to maneuver your car to fit in a space. There is a public lot right next door for a fee and hopefully you'll get a space. We were in the Waterfront King Suite. The room was lovely and had a great view!! However, getting hot water was inconsistent. We had noisy neighbors who we could hear using the hairdryer at 6:42am, and shouting down the hall and slamming their door at 7:30am. At 10:45pm there were sounds like chairs being dragged over hardwood for about 30 minutes. They do give you an opportunity to order breakfast that is delivered to your room and a time you specify. However, both days I had rancid milk for my coffee. I wrote a note to the staff after the first morning, and they served spoiled milk to me again on the second morning!! The food was also vastly under seasoned. I ordered the quinoa bowl both days and got two totally different dishes. And, my wife's potatoes were completely burnt. So for the money we spent on the room, I cannot recommend this place due to parking, noise, and food quality.

This hotel did not live up to its online reputation. Maybe they have staffing challenges in this…read morepart of the world...but who doesn't? Maybe pay more to folks. First off, the front desk would go 15-30 minutes without being staffed. This made it particularly difficult when we needed something - I sat across from the desk for 15 minutes at one point - but that's not enough to warrant a negative review. In fact, I waited this morning to convey this message in person, but the only people in the lobby were customers waiting for help. What does warrant a review is our breakfast foul up. This may sound like a minor issue, however in the world of customer service it absolutely is not. Here's what happened: the hotel provides breakfast in the room. We had two rooms. My daughter mistakenly put my room number on her breakfast card, so they delivered both breakfasts to my room. Only they didn't deliver both COMPLETE breakfasts - they only delivered a portion of the breakfasts. When we inquired about the mixup, we were shown our cards - no apology, only a hint of "here's where the fault lies, and it's with you." However, no one bothered to ask us before delivering an incomplete breakfast as to whether this was actually what we wanted (and bear in mind, this is not a big hotel). After that, there were a series of further mixups before staff actually sorted things out and got complete breakfasts to our rooms. I don't have a big problem with the mixup. I do have a problem with the reaction and the confused resolution. However, the blame here is not on the staff: it's on ownership. It's very clear that at critical points of the day, the hotel has a real staffing issue. It's also clear that ownership hasn't adequately trained staff on "Customer Service 101." The poor worker was clearly frazzled and could use some training and some help. As a result, this hotel did not earn the premium it charges.
