What a gem of a store!…read more It's a very curated vintage store. They have a really great collection of jewelry. I was particularly impressed with their ring selection. I have made two separate purchases so far and intend to come back again! Everything is super charming, like the drawer of "little guys" (photos attached!) For in store events they have a DJ playing records, you can shop, listen to music, and purchase a beverage to enjoy while you shop. The staff really care about what they do and it shows in the details.

Just sold the place over Labor Day, and the furnishings helped me close the deal. They're the perfect combination of not-too-fancy but add-warmth that I like. In addition to the furniture, the service is great. They referred me to a moving service that moved big, heavy furniture in driving rain with good humor and success. I'll be coming back soon!

There are different booths and each one is labeled with any sales that might be going on, but there aren't many staff members, so it was kind of difficult to shop. There are a lot of items that are locked in cabinets and you would presumably have to grab someone from the first floor to unlock it if you wanted to have a closer look. I wasn't trying to spend a ton anyways and am usually happy just browsing, so I just got a small ceramic cup that wasn't locked in anything. There was a booth on the first floor selling fine jewelry and tennis bracelets that were gorgeous but out of my price range. There were a ton of eclectic interesting things here, some kind of grimy and some in pristine condition--truly a one man's trash is another's treasure sort of place. You rarely, if ever, see true antiques else where. You usually see older furniture. Furniture without unique quality. The furniture here has the deep rich looking quality that is the sign of a true antique. Prices are high. Yet the prices seem to match the quality and the age of the item. However, they are not totally overpriced as some of the shops we have visited. You know the kind of place that gives you the impression that somehow being dressed in jeans and sneakers does not qualify you as a real shopper. You know the kind of place that seems to have everything priced in the thousands. There are some real hidden treasures here.

Today half of the store was sectioned off and unavailable, limiting their stock to less than half of what they have. Signs say that this is due to "reorganization", but employees have no information as to when it will be opened up and shoppers can only look at half of the store across barricaded pathways. I've never been at a store that can't manage inventory reorganization during off hours, especially given the amount of store closures this location has due to staff meetings (which I've also never seen a retail store be closed for). It's super frustrating that the store can't get their act together. Every "improvement" comes at the cost of customer convenience. It's honestly like the owner has never worked in a retail environment before. I keep trying to find things to like about this store, as it used to be one of my absolute favorites. Needless to say, they're making it incredibly hard to find reasons to come here. Side note: the staff are the only redeeming aspect of the store.

About halfway into this experience (which is exactly what setting foot into the Reliable Trading…read morePost is -- an experience) I started to wonder if I would make it out alive. The woman at the front, donning Indian Head Dress and watching mid-afternoon soaps among a plethora of crap, told me to "have fun!" after describing the various rooms to visit: 5 upstairs, 1 down below. After the first five, I opted not to go down because I was afraid I might actually have entered the twilight zone or a bad horror movie and would be trapped down there by this crazy lady who collects all manner of -- yes I already said it -- crap. To be fair, a lot of it is not crap at all. For instance, the beautiful old ice box in the first room was gorgeous, in incredible condition, and visibly a true antique. But at $1200, that kind of stuff is more like museum-ware than anythinge else. The broken plastic box of broken jewlery and the $50 collection of ceramic thimbles with the portraits of the nation's presidents fall into the former category. By the third room, I started to feel a little suspicious. This room is actually a kitchen, and either the woman who runs the place is a slob, or she was going for a kind of life-size diorama representing the kitchen of a slob. Cigarette butts snubbed out in an old dirty ashtray sat on the corner of the linoleum counter. But stuff was still apparently for sale, maybe even all the stuff piled in the sink was for sale. I don't know! The fourth room hosted a loud ticking clock and a number of mounted deer heads, which have not been taken care of in the days since the precious animals were shot and killed. An old bridal gown hung yellowing on a door to who knows where. In the fifth room I found the fourth or fifth piece of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia, this was a hand-drawn portrait of the former president. I took up the fantasy that the head-dress lady in the front was probably obsessed with old Abe and drew it herself. Like I said, I didn't make it to the basement. Perhaps next time I go in I will, but I will have to be accompanied by a friend or family member. I will go back, though. Not to buy anything, just for the experience.

This store has some unique characteristics. 1. You are greeted by the owner upon entering.....(note...this is not an experience for a quick visit) and she will tell you that the store is truly a trading post, everything is negotiable and give you a layout of the store. 2. Next you get to start going through the store that is crowded and difficult to navigate as it's FULL of stuff. As is typical of any antiques store, some of the stuff is crap and some things are truly wonderful. I found that the prices here are pretty fair... If you really want to spend some time exploring and find some hard to find items, you should be able to find them here.

It would not be out of place in the South End. The walls were full of art from a local photographer that was amazing, but I don't have $325 to drop on a 24 x 8 inch panel right now. It's definitely one of the best-smelling stores I have ever been to, but the most expensive candle was $48, not two bills. However, there was a pretty sizeable selection of "reasonably priced" items, like $24 scarves, wine racks on sale, little foodstuff items, hair accessories. I ended up picking up two $12 leather-and-studded headbands which were cool. It's definitely the kind of place where you're either shopping for yourself or a woman whose taste you know really, really well. Because you're dealing with a home store with an independently-curated selection of stuff, the gifts aren't safely generic like Pottery Barn or Williams-Sonoma--I hope that makes sense. I really have a bias against indifferent customer service. So the only serious ding was that the woman behind the counter basically did not acknowledge or speak to me until I asked if I could put the headbands at the register while I shopped some more--she was sweet as could be and chatty after that. There was only one other customer in the store, who also got ignored until she made a purchase. I don't like feeling like I have to pay to get a hello out of someone. However, more people should find this hidden gem..!! From shabby and fun home decor to funky rugs, jewelry, candles and bags, they've got a nice mix of hip designers and styles. It's similar to the store Anthropology, however less pricey and not a chain or large business. I was just there today and purchased a fabulous Angela Adams rug, full of textures, moss greens, rich browns and honeys. This great little store is sure to inspire whether it be home or self..
