I was a patient of Dr. Hagen for over 15 years (I started to see him when his office was located on Anaheim St.) and Ruben is so great!. I do miss them! Dr. Sao is also a very good doctor, but she does over charge. I have VSP insurance and this year I decided to do my eyes exam and get my yearly supply of contact lenses at Costco. Yes, I will agree that the doctor there is not as friendly and the office is definitively not as nice, but it was just fine, and the price difference was pretty significant; I pay a total of $82.00 for exam and contact lenses, instead of the $210.00 that I pay to Dr. Sao last year! It is a huge difference and I will probably not go back to Belmont Height Optometry, I cannot afford to waste $128.00 for the exact same thing.... read more

Doctor was good and very nice, place was great, clean and easy parking. However, when I went to order my glasses the prices were very high, so I mentioned I was going to try to order them online...one of the front girls was trying to give me the sales speech and went on to say how online was not a good place to buy...anyway, she never said I was going to need additional measurements and information to order my glasses online...in my eyes that just means she needs more training and instead of trying to make a sale they should be more technical and professional so they can guide people to select the right option... read more

My experience with the dr was awesome, so they get 2 stars. However, the front office staff are rude and not competent. They told me my glasses would take 7-10 days...they took over 2 weeks. I never got a call back, even though they promised SO many times to call me about what the delay was. When I called, they were rude and abrupt. Suspect they messed order up because glasses were suddenly rushed within 24 hours and shipped overnight, but I was made to feel like I was a pain in their butt. Was going to order a second pair of glasses from there cause stock is awesome and loved dr, but not with that kind of turn-around and attitude from their staff. I can spend $300 someplace else. read more

A response to the people who dislike my review: With or without Dr.Hagen's 2 line, homemade contract, his attitude was totally unprofessional. Yea, it's sometimes common practice to sign a legal document that promises you'll pay but that legal document should also have a letterhead and be more than 2 typed lines. Further, when a patient with verified insurance questions your document, it is customary not to scold them for questioning you (unlike my experience with this guy). I'm glad others had a better experience than I did but my experience with this guy was totally shady, mainly because after I questioned him he got upset with me. By the way, I ended up seeing Dr.Lisa Hopkins in Naples. After her office verified my insurance in advance they never asked me to sign a homemade contract. read more

Dr. Sao, who took over for Dr. Hagen last year, is excellent. She is kind, patient, and professional. She really wants to do a good job and make Dr. Hagen proud. It shows. She keeps the office just as great as before Dr. Hagen and Ruben left. She is friendly and personable. She listens and gives you time to ask questions. She takes her time with you. This was the best optometry office in town when Dr. Hagen was here, and it will still be the best office in town with Dr. Sao. I feel very comfortable and taken care of here. The shop has a very extensive assortment of mid and high-end frames, designer brands, etc. So, if you are interested in the latest and greatest frames, check them out. She's not only always extremely pleasant and happy, but she's always willing to talk in detail about how my eyesight is progressing (getting old stinks, and my presbyopia is still getting worse) and what my options are for the future. This is a wonderful optometrist's office! After I had a bad experience with another optometrist, I looked on yelp and found this place. All the positive reviews I read were about Dr. Hagen, but I actually ended up seeing Dr. Sao, and I had a great experience with her. Apparently, Dr. Hagen is retiring, and she is going to take over the practice. Right now they are transitioning and they are both working part-time seeing clients on different days of the week. When I walked in I was greeted by two friendly men at the reception, who helped me figure out my insurance and set up my appointment. As I chatted with both of them, I discovered that one was actually Dr. Hagen himself, and the other one was Ruben, the fabulous office manager. They are such a wonderful team! I really appreciated seeing how closely they work together. The whole office has a very serene atmosphere, with beautiful artwork on the walls and hardwood floors throughout. Dr. Sao was very thorough in her exam and very friendly. They scheduled me in for a whole hour, so she took her time answering all my questions and chatting with me. She asked me if it would be ok to dilate my pupils so that she could perform a more thorough exam, and I agreed to it. So, it might be helpful to plan to get a ride after your exam. During the contacts fitting, she didn't rush at all, and instead made sure that my new prescription fit perfectly. Although I ended up ordering some boxes of contacts through them, they never pressured me to do so. Dr. Sao seems to know the place inside and out. Sometimes doctors don't understand insurance, but Dr. Sao, just like Dr. Hagen, had no problem sitting at the reception desk and process the insurance claim herself. They seem to have created an office that is professional without being hierarchical. There is a small parking lot in the front; otherwise, there's street parking.This place was a wonderful find! Dr. Hagen is, hands down, the best optometrist in Long Beach. During the past three years that I have seen him, I have learned more about my eyes and vision than I have from any other optometrist in more than 20 years' of visits. In addition to being exceptionally smart and knowledgeable, he is friendly and kind. Recently, my partner got poked in the eye by a tree branch when she was gardening. It was Sunday evening, so I called Dr. Hagen just to get his advice about whether or not we should go to the emergency room (he leaves an emergency cell on his voicemail). I caught him in the middle of dinner and he said, "I'll meet you at my office in 30 minutes." That kind of service and caring is unheard of in today's busy world. We went back every morning for the next 4 days, until her wound had healed. Had he not seen us that night, he wouldn't have known if things were better or worse the next day. But because he did, he could closely monitor the progress and treat her eye accordingly. I really can't say enough good things about Dr. Hagen or Ruben, who runs the office (which is, indeed, beautiful). They take insurance and handle the details for you. I have had nothing but positive experiences there and recommend him highly to anyone who wants high-quality, individual medical care in a friendly atmosphere. In response to Mikeala's comment that Dr. Hagen wanted her to sign a "shady" contract guaranteeing payment if insurance didn't reimburse: do you not realize that you sign this form in EVERY doctor's office you go to? It is legal, and it's the only way that physician's can protect themselves from the whims of insurance companies. There isn't anything about Dr. Hagen that is shady. read more

I tried another local optometrist because he had Saturday hours, but I did not like my experience with them so I went back to Belmont Heights Optometry. I stoppen in for a new prescription and lenses to find that Dr Sao had replaced Dr. Hagen. I liked Dr. Hagen and was also impressed by Dr Sao and her staff. She continues Dr. Hagen's practice of grinding lenses on site, and when I requested a particular brand of high quality lenses she also accommodated my request. They carry Silhouette frames which I like a lot, and took the time to do a very thorough examination and fitting. I can really see and feel the difference in quality. She also started opening on Saturdays so it is more convenient for me. Great optometrist, great personal service, Highly recommended! read more

Exceptionally clean office, pleasant desk staff, wonderful optometrists. Very friendly vibe. Had my eye exam, needed dilation, but couldn't do it that day, so I came back the next week just for dilation without another charge. Dr. Sao rechecked my eyes to be sure that part of the exam from the week before was correct. And they don't give you any hassles about asking for your script so you can get mail-order specs. read more

I loved this place! It was my first time here and I felt welcome by the receptionist and the doctor. The receptionist speaks Spanish, which is great because it makes it easier for my father, who was there with me, to understand. The place was neat and there's lots of magazines for you to read, even though there wasn't much of a wait. I had a great time! Sinavy and her team are the best! The storefront is always so relaxing to walk into and she has a really amazing selection of frames and lens. I have gotten multiple tests done here for my eyes and she always does a great job guiding me to find the best prescription! She even checks your overall health by just looking inside your eyes with some device. (I never knew this was possible). I was referred by a friend after losing my glasses. I had not had an eye exam in many years. From making my appointment to my first visit they were very professional and polite. Rosa is very sweet and patient. Dr. Sao explained the exam every step of the way. My prescription had changed significantly, and I had difficuly adjusting to the new glasses. After two return visits, I think I have it all worked out. Dr. Sao and Rosa were extremely patient and accommodating. The office is state of the art and very well designed. I'd been happy with my old optometrist but the solutions he'd come up with weren't really working so I thought I might get another opinion. My vision problems are a bit complicated and getting harder to solve as I get older - contact lenses and cheaters (for reading & computer work) and eyes with very different corrections. I'd seen Dr. Sao's ad in the Belmont Heights Community Assoc. newsletter and she's in the neighborhood so it was an easy choice. And I'm so happy I did. Dr. Sao was thorough, patient, and completely into helping me figure out the simplest solution to my complicated vision needs.
