I had 2 people helping me one i think was the owner. They both looked at the jewelry and gave me a price then we took off the price of my repairs that was great owing less for my repairs. I find the repairs were reliable and so was the money for the gold i sold. I purchased my engagement ring with Peter Jr. in December of 2012. Ben Garelick Jewelers was an absolute pleasure to work with, personifying professionalism and class. I went to Ben Garelick looking for a ring I had in mind, with no luck at other jewelers in town. As I perused the case, I didn't see what I was looking for, but found something close. But that wasn't what I wanted. As with other Jewelers, Ben Garelick carries jewelery lines from select designers. I expected the "well, you can take a look at their catalog online and we can order what you want" response that others have given me. But that wasn't helping me either. Then Peter Jr. suggested we design it ourselves. My ears immediately perked up. After talking up some ideas, we had the on staff jeweler, Brian, (more like an architect, designer, craftsman, wizard) give us his opinion as to what would work best. A few days later, CAD pictures were drawn up reflecting everything I wanted! Everyone at the store was so accommodating and friendly; as if I was a neighbor who came over for the holidays. Peter Jr. responded to all my questions immediately and was very patience and kind, before and after the sale. They even produced a sterling silver prototype of my design to insure that my vision would be reflected correct. We changed a minor detail (seemed good on paper but not 3 dimensional) and a couple weeks later my engagement ring I created was in my hands, and it was exactly what I specified. Beautiful! I couldn't ask for better knowledge, excellent customer service and prompt delivery than I got at Ben Garelick Jewelers, even though I was dealing via chat on-line and by phone from Virginia. I was trying to replace a wedding band and saw a picture of one at a jeweler in Virginia where I live. I wanted to see how it would look with my engagement ring before purchasing the new wedding band. The local jeweler did not have the actual ring and would not order it unless it was paid for in advance, and told me it could not be returned if I didn't like it. So, I searched on line with the brand name of the ring I wanted and Ben Garelick Jewelers in Buffalo came up. I initially contacted Peter Manka Jr. via chat. He said he could send me a sample of the ring in silver and cubic zirconium. I paid for the sample it with the assurance from Peter that they would refund my money or apply it toward the cost of the actual ring, if ordered. The sample arrived in 2 days! I liked the way it looked, sent it back and Peter promptly ordered and sent me the actual ring to Virginia within a few days. I had already checked Ben Garelick on line via the BBB and was assured that I was dealing with a reputable jeweler. I had several contacts with Peter to ask questions about sizing, insurance, and soldering the rings together, all of which I have since had done locally. Let me start by telling you that my fiance bought me a beautiful Shogun Pearl necklce here in addition to a very fine gold charm bracelet and all of the charms added to it (8) here. One charm costing as much as $500. Ok, now, let me begin. The clasp on my necklace broke, the part that you slip into the piece that "locks"it. I had the piece that broke off. Let me also add that within the past 18 months this necklace was "restrung" at this jewelry store. I brought the necklace in to the store along with the broken piece of the clasp. I brought it in in the box it was purchased in, with all of the paperwork. I laid it all on the counter and when a woman walked over to ask me how she could help me, I told her I needed the clasp replaced. She asked me if I bought it there. (The box, paperwork all in plain view). She told me she had to go upstairs to ask if the necklace would have to be restrung in addition to replacing the clasp. She returned from upstairs and said (he) wasn't sure she would have to get Peter, hes one of the owners, to look at it. He came out, and asked me the same questions. (Did I purchase it there etc, again, the box and paperwork in full view). I told him I needed the clasp replaced, and without even looking at it, pulled out a book and asked me what kind of clasp I wanted. I showed him the piece and asked why this piece could not be replaced. At that point he then really looked at the necklace and said that it probobly could, but the necklace would probobly have to be restrung. I went on to explain, I dont wear this necklace often, a few times a yr, and it was restrung aprox 18 months ago, and would i be charged for this. After making me feel like I was bothering him, he hastily filled out a repair slip and said that I would receive a call letting me know if the necklace needed to be restrung after it was looked at by the person doing the repair/restringing (if necessary) as that person wasnt there at the time. A week later I received a call stating that the necklace did require a restringing but they were not going to charge me for it. A week after that, I received a voice mail message on my phone, while I was out of town asking me to call the store about Job # .... I waited until I returned from out of town, and went to the store. I was met by "Jennifer" one of the "partners" who explained to me that my necklace was lost by UPS but not to worry as it was "fully insured" and I could either have a replacement necklace, that she was expecting to be delivered that day, or the insurance value as it was fully insured. Needless to say, I was in shock, and asked for the tracking number for the necklace, she said that UPS was conducting their investigation and would not release any more details to me. I was not prepared for this revelation, and left the store. I told her I would call her and let her know my decision. I went home and explained this to my fiance. We went back to the store to look at the replacement necklace. I was asked to sign a paper with the value of the necklace written on it without an appraisal. We asked for the appraisal and called her back to ask her for an appraisal and she said she would have it for us within 24 hours. We received the appraisal, and reviewed it. I then took the necklace to a certified appraiser to have it appraised. The necklace was brand new, a day old and the value differed in price by $500. To make a longer story less long, and give you some important facts. 1) This jewelery store has an online video boasting that "all repairs are done onsite". FALSE Just in case they pull it before you get a chance to see it, I also copied it off their website. 2) The appraisal we were given was from the "restringer" who also provided the replacement necklace. Sound like collusion to you? 3) The jeweler rep "Jennifer" absolutely refused to show me how much she insured my necklace for. Sound like Insurance Fraud to you? I forgot to mention that my fiance had ordered a charm for me prior to our trip, that charm came in (it cost between $450-500), we then told "jennifer" we wanted to return the charm (it was still in the box) to which she didnt hesitate, and refunded the money. She was absolutely rude and only wanted to get us out of the store as there were other customers in the store and this was obviously not a pleasant experience. We then went up the road and got the same charm for $100 less ! We will NEVER return to this business again. Buyer Beware ! read more

I had a very disappointing experience with this shop. I brought my $1800 watch which was given to me as a wedding gift for a battery change. I had worn it daily for three years without any issues or scratches and it just needed a simple battery change. I read about Ben Garelick and it was close to my house so I went in. I gave it to their watchmaker, Rick, trusting everything would be alright since it is a simple task in early June 2014. Anyway, I picked it up later in the week and the battery was changed but the watch had several scratches on the back from where they had to open the case. I brought this to their attention and they were not concerned and said scratches were inevitable. They didn't offer me a refund or an apology and said they couldn't do anything about it and I would have to live with it. I said OK and got another opinion from another watchmaker who said the case was not properly opened and if their watchmaker could not open it with his tools, then he shouldn't have tried to pry open the case with whatever tools he had. Different watches require different tools and not all watchmakers may have the proper tools. Please be careful about giving them expensive watches (I brought them a RADO) for even simple tasks like battery changes. I wore this watch for three years without any scratches but I gave it to Ben Garelick for one week and it was given back to me with scratches. read more

I wanted to let you know that I sold fine jewelry at the retail level in both independent and chain stores for 8 years through high school, college, and beyond to the point where I was the manager of my own store between the late 80's and early 90's. I prided myself in delivering the utmost in customer service to my customer base that ensured return sales. Sadly, more often than not, I as a jewelry customer am sorely disappointed at the level of effort I see in today's industry. Case in point, my boyfriend bought me three rings (I asked for one) from Zales for Christmas last year and it was like pulling teeth to get them sized and on my finger within less than a month's time. In my opinion, it should never take a month to do a simple ring sizing, especially after an item is received as a Christmas present. I couldn't wear any of them until almost February. Therefore, I had nothing but bad things to say about the Zales organization from the bottom to the top as a result of that experience. I will not return as a customer or recommend them to others. That being said, I am floored by the degree of exceptional customer service I have received from Peter Jr at Ben Garelick Jewelers from the very beginning. His responsiveness and willingness to go above and beyond to satisfy me as a faceless customer who contacted him over the internet is truly refreshing. Peter Jr responded to each and every email/question within less than 24 hours. The timestamps of his email responses were well before/after the posted store business hours. I often wondered if he ever slept or even went home. As a seller of engagement rings for many years, I know what an important purchase this is. It isn't done lightly and believe me, I have been looking for months locally and online for that perfect piece to suit me and my boyfriend and to not break the bank.
