I had a fantastic meal at Baumgart's Cafe in Ridgewood. The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful. I ordered the mango shrimp with mixed Chinese vegetables from the healthy menu, and the shrimp were perfectly cooked--fresh, tender, and served in a light, delicious sauce. It was excellent on its own, but dessert took it to another level. The homemade ice cream, topped with freshly whipped cream and real hot fudge and butterscotch, was out of this world! PLEASE READ people of Ridgewood. This place denied me service today. I was dressed on my way to a Pride Event. I had a rainbow necklace in my hands, and was wearing a pink light hoodie. Dress pants, dress shoes and light blue polo. Totally appropriate. They told me that they didn't have any coffee. At first this was just weird (the place was virtually empty, and it is a CAFE). I asked if I could use the bathroom, and the lady looked me up and down. Her eyes locked on my rainbow necklace, and she said "you can go across the street." I thought she had to kidding, but as I looked at her I saw an expression that held mild disgust for me on her face. "Public restroom across the street" ( which there isn't...she was directing me to the stop and shop across the street, another business). I couldn't help but understand and feel what she was saying as: We don't want people like you here. Go where you belong. As I walked out I couldn't help but notice the sign they display that says "Ridgewood, There is No Place Like Home." I can't believe this exists in 2025 Ridgewood. read more

By accident, after a doctor's appointment we discovered Baumgart's in Fairview!!! I didn't think we'd ever get over them leaving Englewood. They are still as nice as could be and we ordered everything imaginable. The shrimp dumplings are still so fresh and delicious. One order didn't make it home. We ate it at red lights. The hot and sour soup was so good. Just what we needed on a cold night. The shredded beef is a dish. I dream of. It's crispy with carrots and scallions not overly sweet. Just perfect. The moo shu vegetable was as yummy as I remembered. The Happy Family was loaded with fresh large shrimp. We ordered Bok Choy and it was so delicious and so fresh. I wish they delivered but it's even too far for Uber eats or Door Dash. It's worth the thirty minutes each way to pick up because it's the best Chinese food in New Jersey or NY. read more

Just went to Baumgart's in Ridgewood for the first time; truly, my only issue was how many times I drove past it because I missed it! (White building across the street from Stop & Shop; there's parking in the back). I'm with folks who were baffled by the menu -- and then switched from baffled to delighted. I had a serving of chicken lo mein -- with homemade lo mein noodles -- and it was truly the best I've ever had. The sauce was not heavy or greasy as in many Chinese restaurants, but light yet still flavorful. Followed that by a scoop of their homemade ice cream (don't judge my nutritional pyramid, we're still in a pandemic and I'm gleefully eating my feelings whenever I can!). So, so good. I didn't feel like I could give five stars because I only tried two things, but I do plan to go back and am likely going to pop another star on there. This was my first visit to Baumgart's Cafe. It was a Saturday at 5:15pm. I was directed to the back where I chose my own seat. I ordered the Mee Slam noodles dish. It came out fairly quickly which was also the opinion of another diner. I enjoyed my meal while listening to Christmas tunes as well as children screaming followed by parents screaming. The menu says special spicy sauce but I just don't know about that. Other than that, it was a delightful dinner. It wasn't quite enough food so I also had a Sicilian slice at Puzo's. read more

Whoa! Completely unexpected! My neighbors invited us to dinner and it certainly was a great choice! The building is so unassuming that you're not sure what to expect, however once inside it's like being transported via Time Machine to a retro 70's diner. The decor I dare say original and in perfect condition. Loved it! Now, the dish that cannot be missed is the sesame noodles. A MUST HAVE! The noodles are hand rolled. It is heaven! Sorry no photo because we ate it so quickly! The General Tso Chicken amazing! And the Crispy Chicken with Honey Walnuts is delicious. Finished with a Scoop of Ice Cream! In my experience, the words "Diner" and "Chinese" rarely collide in a sentence. Baumgart's is the rare exception. The Ridgewood location and its older sibling in Englewood are a mashup of all manner of Asian food -- with a healthy dose of Jewish, Italian and Greek diner on the side. Reuben sandwiches, Pad Thai, shrimp scampi, sushi, strawberry shrimp salad, quesadillas, Singapore style curried mai fun, terrifically authentic flounder filets sautéed in Chinese rice wine (Shaoxing) with wood-ear mushrooms, hamburgers, sizzling duck crepes and surprisingly delicious house made ice cream are just a few examples of the rotating schizophrenic menu. One thing is certain. This place 'AINT kosher or halal or Whole30 or Keto happy. It's free wheel eating -- almost carnival style - and for the most part - it's pretty darn good. Decades ago I frequented the original Englewood store which served killer breakfasts, including bagels and lox with a healthy schmear and all manner of eggs, cheese and Taylor ham. Nostalgia from those days lingers. Sweetie is a long time fan of the more modern Ridgewood location -- but I have long had my reservations. In the interest of preserving culinary harmony, and partly because they deliver (sensible when addled by adult beverages) on several recent occasions we ordered takeout. Everything tastes better with high octane libations -- which we paired with our exclusively Chinese selections. The sizzling duck crepes and flounder filets in rice wine (called "absolute fantastic fish" on their menu) are very authentic versions of Taiwanese specialties. The fish was a bit sweeter than I'm used to but my absinthe cocktail with orange bitters and Tripel ale evened that out nicely. Shrimp rolls were a satisfyingly crunchy appetizer and the curried Singapore noodles were chock full of proteins, veggies with just enough heat and curry. Overall -- these choices were surprisingly good. Less to my liking was the orange beef -- heavily fried and greasy almost to the point of inedibility. The moo shoo pork (Sweeties fave) was mostly barely seasoned cabbage. Flavorless. I'm a reluctant fan of Baumgart's -- but convenience counts -- and eclectic rings my bell most days. A worthy mainstay to a pretty thin Chinese culinary scene in Ridgewood. Top Tip: If you have a favorite take on one of B's offerings, ask them to prepare it your way. They are very accommodating and pricing is reasonable for Ridgewood. Plus, on site parking is a pleasant surprise in this parking challenged town. read more

We had a reservation for 6:45, we were told at arrival our table is getting ice cream and it will be ready in 20mins AT 7:10 AFTER I HAD TO ASK THEM they said the table is JUST GETTING THEIR DESSERT mind you i have a 2 year old !! Their ice cream is the best butter pecan I have had. Their healthy creations with all veggies in garlic sauce is amazingly simple but super tasty. Their staff is very nice, their diner food I have tried is great they are so nice. Service is good, people who take the orders are very nice, friendly Delivery people are fast efficient and good they seem to have a nice ambiance and even though my family has some tummy issues with certain foods they have been extremely nice about adjusting the mei fun dishes which is awesome as not everyone does that. read more

My family and I have been going to this restaurant for 10 years and the food and service were always great. Restaurant manager is always friendly with a smile. When I first went to Baumgart 10 years ago, I thought it was a burger place. To my surprise, they also serve authentic Malaysian and Chinese dishes. Pan fried dumplings, sesame chicken, three-cups casserole chicken, pork fried rice are our usual order. Personally, being Chinese, I love the seafood casserole and Mee Siam (spicer the better). These dishes brought back my childhood memories in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, unlike pre-COVID days, they stopped giving complimentary ice cream if you ordered more than $60.00. I hope the owner will bring this back. Nevertheless, their coffee ice cream is nice. I also missed their authentic 'cha siu' (barbecue pork) rice with Bok Choy that was one the menu pre-COVID days. Went last night. We were the only people eating in the restaurant. Service was very poor and very slow. No drinks refilled, never checked on. The boneless ribs were not eatable. They were tough like leather. I sent them back. The general tsos chicken was ehh, not very good. Got the bill and they did not remove boneless ribs. I complained and they took it off with no apology. I have been to baumgarts here and in Englewood probably 30 times over the years and usually happy... I don't think it's worth going back. read more

I cannot believe how abused the staff has treated me at Baumgarts. When we order on the phone they give a 2 hour plus delivery window and will not commit to a time. When we go in person, they slam the plates, talk down to you in front of your offspring and act as if it is an inconvenience to eat there. One of my Dr's offices suggested this place for a recent lunch. My manager also co-signed this place... said her son's love the sushi. Based upon those expectations, I may have been a little let down. I ordered a turkey reuben with fries... and it really was meh. The fries were totally bland.. I had to add a ton of garlic salt to take it up a notch.. the wrap was the same.. had to douse in sauce to give it any flavor.. The reason why I'm giving this place 3 stars it's because my meals haven't been consistently good. I've never actually ate here but I have ordered for delivery plenty of times. I tried the quesadillas and I hate it them, they weren't your typical chicken and cheese. But that's just my opinion. I also tried the island wrap, great but I always get it with ranch instead of honey mustard and there's been times they forget to put it, also I hate mango in my wrap and they've forgotten to take it out as well. So that's been a turn off. I do however like that when I order anything for delivery they give you a free lemonade or tea. Came here for lunch with a friend today, and we both enjoyed our meal. We ordered Shrimp Scampi and the Sante Fe. We had a question about one of the dishes and our waiter asked another gentleman to come help us. We didn't have to wait very long and our meals were served piping hot. We both asked for coffee and that was steaming hot as well. I decided to get the baked apple crisp for dessert. It tasted good, very sweet, but my only complaint is that it wasn't warm throughout. This restaurant has been a fixture in Ridgewood for close to three decades. It's essential to understand the type of food you're in for, though. It's half traditional American, and half Asian fusion. On the traditional American standard diner fare: Sandwiches, wraps, etc. but in my opinion they really shine on the Asian side. I can only speak for the lo mein and I can safely say it's out of this world. Noodles taste homemade and the sauce is pretty darn good. I'm not usually picky about noodles, but these set the bar pretty high. I've heard from other friends that many of the other Asian dishes are amazing as well. The space is comfortable and inviting. There's a fun fish tank in the corner for the kids and a private party room upstairs. Definitely worth a visit, and potentially several more. Note: As someone with a nut allergy, it pays to be extra vigilant here. They put nuts in some weird places. Some of their sandwich breads have walnuts in them and many of the Asian dishes have peanuts thrown on top. Just mention the allergy (as you doubtless already do) and you should be fine. OMG, THE MENU IS SOOO CONFUSING!! Chinese, Japanese, Sushi, Thai, Fusion.....What is it?? The answer is....WHO CARES!? What is the big deal. I'm sure that if they served only 3 dishes people would be complaining that there wasn't enough variety. In case you hadn't noticed, there aren't a whole lot of sit down Chinese restaurants left. As a community, we need to embrace those that remain. Otherwise, where the hell are we (Jews) going to eat on Christmas? Not like we have all that many choices. Duh. Baumgart's is good, really good. Is it fantastic as in the best sushi, Chinese or whatever else they serve, no. But it is really good and the prices are quite reasonable. I've eaten at about 4 or 5 of their locations and have enjoyed them all. The service is attentive without being overbearing and the ice cream looks good although I've never ordered it. Usually fill up on their OUTSTANDING cold sesame noodles. So please, people get over yourselves. The menu is in English and all those confusing things are explained for you. I've been here a few times and it's always been up to par everytime. This restaurant is a mix of Asian/American food with choices such as sushi, fried rice, noodles, dumplings, burgers, fries, etc. It has great ambiance and has two floors to house guests. They also offer homemade desserts and ice cream which is always something worth trying. My husband I shared a few dishes. We first ordered the Roti Cani which was surprising very good. I've had roti from other places before, but I have to say this place makes it the best. The curry sauce it comes with had a good consistency to it with the right amount of spices without overpowering it with flavor. The dough (whatever you really call roti) came out nice and hot with very soft, exactly how it should be made! We then ordered the Young Chow Fried Rice and the Musaman (I think that's the spelling) curry chicken. Both dishes were more than enough to share between two people, with plenty of leftovers. The young chow fried rice was good with a mixture of vegetables and what I believe is beef. The beef was a little dry but overall the dish was good. The curry chicken was my favorite. The chicken was steamed perfectly and the curry sauce (which has peanuts..for you with allergies this is not a good dish!) finish on top was delicious. The curry chicken also came with string beans. The only downside to the curry chicken was that it was a bit salty for my taste. Otherwise, both dishes are great for sharing. We ordered dessert of 2 scoops of homemade ice cream (mint chocolate chip & espresso coffee). Mint chocolate was delicious (but it's also my favorite flavor so I could be biased) and I wasn't a huge fan of the espresso coffee. I've had espresso coffee ice cream at other places and I'd have to be honest that I've tasted better The service was good overall. The staff was friendly and attentive to the customers needs. Ridgewood s Iconic Pan Asian restaurant For the past 20 years Bergen county foodies have flocked to this low profile gem in the heart of Ridgewood. My wife and our family have always found Baumgart's the perfect venue for informal dining during the day or on the weekends. Now that we live in Bergen county we decided to visit this congenial restaurant on a Friday nite. We were warmly greeted by Tracy the general manager and our favorite waitress Nicole . Baumgart's is all about Great Asian cooking and delightful service. The main dining room is decorated in a 60's type of decor with shadow boxes , photos and a large acquarium filled with beautiful. Bright orange parrot fish that seemed to be one big happy family ... swimming in Unisome and closely bunched together . Tracy and Nicole suggested a diverse assortment of small plates . We began our festive meal with a unique and delicious clear wonton soup all the selections at Baumgart's are locally sourced , and are freshly made in their kitchen! We the were.served a series of fabulous small plates I.e. honey glazed spare ribs, Shrimp Setu with mini pineapple chunks- an amazing taste treat combining flavorful shrimps coated with a spicy and tangy coating., and a luscious dish of chicken and pine nuts. Tracy insisted that we try one beef dish- tender beef sliced over a plate of silk like rice noodles . Simply awesome ! Of course no meal Baumgart's would be complete without a large plate of their house made ice cream. We selected Mocha chip and it was totally "off the hook" . A super rich and creamy delight with large chunks of solid dark chocolate . We finished our feast with a glass of their own pomegranate iced tea . Our return to Baumgart's was a culinary delight ! Kudos to the charming and lovely Tracy and our waitress Nicole for providing us with a memorable feast with gracious and welcoming service. Baumgart's is simply one of Bergen county's best restaurants. Perfect for family and friends! Made a return visit in December and talked to our two favorite people on the staff Tracey and Nicole. Grabbed a fast bite after the movies in town. We always love the Pad Thai to share, along with a portion of barbecued ribs. Our food was absolutely delicious ! The ribs were large meaty! For dessert, We devoured a plate of homemade ice cream over a delicious brownie in a fabulous chocolate sauce. Baumgart's is still our favorite pan Asian place to go in Ridgewood!
