I had to drag myself all the way out to Port Jefferson, which is about a million miles away on the darn Long Island Railroad from Forest Hills, to go to a friend's father's wake. Wakes always depress the hell out of me anyway, but afterward we ended up at this bar restaurant. It's a totally regular, blue-collar joint. Nothing fancy or phony about it at all. They had the usual stuff sitting out as the wake crowd shuffled in. Trays of wraps, wings, pasta, Caesar salad, sausage and peppers, that whole routine. Average food, really, but it got the job done. Everybody was feeling pretty happy as the drinks came in and went down celebrating this mans life on this depressing planet. It wasn't great or anything, but it didn't pretend to be, which I respect. If you really want to know the truth about the dining area, the whole setup in there was funny as hell. On one wall, they had all these cartoon posters, or whatever the hell they were, like Artificial Intelligence Smurfs and Angry Birds and all those childish pictures hanging up like it was a damn nursery. But then right on the other wall, they've got pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, like they're trying to act all classy and sophisticated, which just killed me. It's such a strange contrast that it almost breaks your heart. ​And then over on the bar side, it was just this huge square bar where a bunch of locals were sitting around watching the Mets lose on TV, some old bar fly playing a version of compacted nine pins. They were all staring at me like I had two heads or something just for wearing an expensive suit, which depressed me as well. read more

Wow found my new favorite spot to grab some food. The hamburger was delicious. The pretzels with the warm cheese is amazing as well. Great atmosphere, service was fantastic. It is a bar. The food is, at best, bar food (overcooked, flavorless, and makes you feel sick unless you have been drinking). The crowd at this place is questionable, and there is no such thing as ambience here. The staff is fairly inconsistent (leaning towards friendly but slow and ignores you). My daughter was craving french dip and the reviews suggested here. Review was right. My daughter was very happy. My husband and I got the steak tidbits and they were delicious. The onion rings were thin and crispy and also really good. I loved the horseradish sauce on the side of the tidbits. Walked in at 7:30. Totally packed for happy hour in the bar area so we sat in the dinning area where there were plenty of seats. Had mozz sticks, pretzel sticks, a Greek salad, and fish and chips split between 2 people. Mozz sticks- just ok Pretzel sticks- awesome. Light, slaty, buttery delicious. I went there to meet friends and ordered a drink. Vodka and soda is an easy drink, however when this place has filthy lines throughout their system their soda tastes like vomit. I took a sip and informed the owner and he did nothing but emptied the drink in the sink and charged me full price. My husband and I live around the corner from benchwarmers and like the convenience of the location. We've brought our kids into the dining room and have also spent time at the bar for dinner and drinks. The pub quality food is decent and the menu and drink prices are slightly higher than nearby pubs but the establishment is very clean. The dining room decor is a little cheesey and doesn't really match the bar which has very nice stone and brick work and some nice sports memorabilia. My family has been going there for months but the couple who owns it are very standoffish and unfriendly. The last few visits we've made the wife of the owner has been drinking at the bar and on a couple of occasions we've heard her be unnecessarily nasty to patrons at her husbands establishment. We still enjoy going to benchwarmers on occasion as we find their staff to be very friendly and its close to home but we don't go nearly as often anymore. read more
