My bride loves coming here for her birthday. We have pretty much been going once a year for over 10 years now. From first going when we started dating and now 3 kids later, we have kept the tradition of going for her birthday. Main reason being she gets a free birthday meal, and while the deal has changed a couple times over the years, I believe you currently get a $50 credit. We've gone exclusively to the Sugar Land location, and it's been very consistent in service and the food is always on point. Something about that butter that they use in their fried rice just leaves you wanting more. The cooks and servers are always friendly and enthusiastic. And while the show has gotten repetitive for me personally, my kiddos truly enjoy the spectacle when they go. I will say though, this last visit, Elvis was our server and he was attentive, professional, thoughtful, and showed a quality of wanting to learn more about different things, including customers. A young man who works hard and shows a desire to achieve financial independence is downright awesome and inspiring. While I will say although the food is good every time, it is pretty expensive and so we don't regularly come here. And it does take time with the hibachi. So, my father always loved Benihana, so it was only befitting that we decided to come here to celebrate Father's Day. We made a reservation at 2pm for a party of 10 (including 3 kiddos). Given that it was Father's Day, it probably took our party about 15 to 20 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, we were immediately greeted. Shortly after, the waiter came back and took our orders. The waiter was quick yet patient and very kind. He took all our orders and made some decent recommendations. Most of our party opted to get the chicken fried rice, with steak and chicken or just salmon. Our hibachi chef was very engaging. Both the kids and adults gave him their undivided attention. Our food was ready fairly quickly, which our table appreciated. The food, of course, was warm and fresh. Flavor wise, the food was okay. Came here for Valentine's Day and had a great experience. Food was good and the portion sizes generous. We loved our server, John, and our chef, Jesus. Steak could've been a little more tender, but other than that we loved it. This wasn't clear to us upon ordering so wanted to mention that they will upsell the fried rice to be *chicken* fried rice, without mentioning that it is a $7.50 upcharge per person. This location has completely gone down hill. I been loyal customer for past 15 yrs . The past 3 times I been food has gone to shit. The food had no flavor. The party next to us order wagu which meat was frozen. The restaurant apparently can't fix the ac. The restraunt thermostat stated 86 until they start cooking then the thermostat stated it was 96 degrees inside. I will not be returning. This is the second time in a row I've been disappointed with the food at the Benihana in SL. Last night the filet mignon over cooked (ordered medium rare) and so chewy, I had to spit a piece out, and it was like that for all 3 of us. Given the price, I could have gotten a much better quality steak at a high end steak house. The previous time we were there the lobster was overcooked, chewy and small / shriveled up. Considering the $50+ dinner price doesn't include the fried rice, this is just not worth the value. A Disappointing Change I've been a loyal Benihana guest since childhood, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and plenty of family gatherings there. It was always a fun place to see the chefs cook in front of you and enjoy a good meal. Unfortunately, my recent visit really left me disappointed, and I think it's important to share why. First off, the prices have skyrocketed to a point that just doesn't feel justifiable. We went for a weekend lunch--so not even dinner pricing--and found that most dishes were running between $40 and $60. That's a huge jump. I understand that costs go up over time, but what we got in return just didn't match that increase. For example, the hibachi steak--which used to be a reliable option--was now about $39.50, and we got less food than ever. The steak was thinner, and they gave us fewer mushrooms. The chicken fried rice, which we always order, came with such a tiny amount of chicken that it was honestly shocking. For a group of nine people, it felt like we got a handful of chicken pieces total. In the end, the value just isn't there anymore. We used to go four or five times a year, but at these prices and portion sizes, it's not worth it. Honestly, I'd rather take my family and spend that same $40 to $50 per person at a nice steakhouse, where the quality of the steak and the overall experience would be much better. We had reservations and was seated for five other people. This was our first time going so we wasn't sure how it all worked. There was a couple to the left of us and we were in the middle and a couple to the right of us. The guy introduced himself to the couple to run left and the couple to the right. After he addressed the occasion to those two couples, he never once said anything to address my husband and I. I visited Benihana today to purchase $200 in gift cards during the advertised double bonus flash sale (5/7-5/9). When I mentioned the promotion, the person assisting me, who I believe may have been the owner, told me I would only receive a $60 bonus for the $200 purchase. I explained about the flash sale and he questioned where I saw it and asked me to prove it. I had to return to my car to retrieve my phone and show him the promotional email before he reluctantly processed and activated the gift cards. Throughout the entire interaction, he was rude, dismissive, and impolite. This was not a special favor or exception being requested. It was a promotion publicly advertised by Benihana. I was disappointed that someone representing the restaurant appeared unaware of the promotion and made me feel uncomfortable for simply asking to receive the advertised offer. I have been a frequent customer of Benihana for years and rarely leave complaints on social media, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. Restaurant is operating with a broken AC unit. As a result they have 5 portable air condition systems through out the restaurant but it is not helping at all. Father's Day. Food was tasty. I've been coming here for over 18 years. Worst experience tonight. Seems like the A/C was not working properly, but no excuses or apologies given. Then had to wait way long for first drinks, then forever for refills . For the first time in over 18 years, they bring the salad out AFTER the grilled foods were prepared. I went here for a birthday recently, and it just reminds me always as to why I don't go on a regular basis. To sum up, you are paying for the entertainment and not the food. I love the show they put on and usually the guys do very well. The servers are attentive and I have never had an issue with them. The thing that falls short is the food. The food is mid at best. The prices are so inflated it's hard to appreciate the show, also the portions are not the greatest for the amount it costs. Again it reiterates you are literally just paying for the show. If you aren't trying to break the bank, get a side of the chicken rice and they will still do the show. But it is not anywhere near filling. Visited Benihana on Christmas eve which was a really busy night. The staff seemed overwhelmed with the high number of people. The chef was really impressive and performed a lot of the typical tricks including the onion fire and the beating heart, I was missing the shrimp in the pocket though. I got the Scallops. Very delicious and well done! The soup was incredible one of the best things all night. The salad and vegetables are good. I do wish they had a fried rice version that didn't have chicken in it. She told me about the birthday gift certificate of 30 dollars that Benihana offers. And that is quite a deal. Highly recommend. Great staff and great service. We typically give ourselves enough time to partake in HH, where we order dranks and apps. We looove the birthday song, the birthday treat, and the birthday picture that we get to close out dinner! This time we were very lucky and received two copies of this year's picture. We typically get one copy and the birthday lady gets to keep it. That's fair, right? :) We know. We visited this location for my sister's birthday. It was a first time experience for all of us and we really enjoyed it. My nephew and niece were overly excited to wear their chef's hats and watch the guy cook our food. I had shrimp with no rice but had the soup and salad. That alone filled me up. We ended up having a variety of food between us but shared each other's meals. Since it was my sister's birthday, they came over and sang Happy Birthday, and we all ate ice cream. The tall male Asian manager needs to be reassigned to a post that isn't client facing. Like something in the kitchen away from the general public. On the day of our visit this gentleman was working the host stand. I walked in, the first person in my party, and he just stared at me. We had a good 3-5 second stare down before I broke and said sarcastically - "Hi, how are you today?" to which he applied "How can I help you"? I replied, "I'm well thank you for asking", continued to check in and sat down waiting on the other guests. I sat for a few minutes before the rest of my party arrived and we all went to the host stand again to be seated, thinking they'd seat us because everyone had arrived. He very much did not like this and said "Have a seat!" As in - did I tell you I was ready to seat you yet? Even my younger brother was like what's his problem. This guy is just cold and smug. Definitely not the first impression you want your guest coming in contact with. The rest of the visit was just OK. At this point I dont see any reason to patronize Benihana because there are so many smaller hibachi style restaurants with better service, food and prices. But the birthday person wanted Benihana so that's where we went. Our chef, Hung, was lackluster. No engagement, barely any entertainment at all. Someone mentioned that it was probably because there weren't any kids in our party but that shouldn't affect the experience. Adults like being entertained too.
