Okay. I'm not quite sure how to feel about this location. The people are nice enough but I'm at least talking about the food. Most slim menu of the other all you can eat sushi restaurants that I've had. It doesn't leave much if you are really trying to stay there for a couple of hours and indulge. They do have quite the array of sushi offerings but not the other options like I'm used to with the other all you can eat restaurants. The food was decent I would say my favorite was any of any of the salmon dishes that I had. Just absolutely melt in your mouth scrumptious. Yum. But, sadly nothing else really stuck out. I'm a sucker for a good seaweed salad but the seaweed salad was entirely too salty. Which, I've never experienced before. All the other options are pretty mediocre and this place doesn't offer the social media discount either, so for me not jumping up and down with amazing flavors in my mouth made me feel like it wasn't worth the price point. I don't know. I'm not saying I would NEEEVER come back again but it's definitely not going to be a place where if I want all you can eat sushi I will think of it first. The place is actually pretty inside. And they even offer you kimonos to wear for pictures or social media or even to wear as you're enjoying your dinner. I thought that was cute. I have visited multiple Sushi Masa establishments throughout the US and I can safely say that they're all the same and all equally disappointing as the next. While the staff are friendly and some items on their menu are tasty, other lack flavor and the service is equally slow at all locations which is so frustrating. (twas a Sunday eve and I'm assuming this time frame of 4-7pm is their busiest) Those who deliver what you've ordered most of the time just throws your food on the table (it was always this young tall brother, he apologizes but he doesn't care at all lol) I wanted to complain to the manager cause thrice he did it to my wife's food but I just don't want to ruin our good time together and our server was friendly and helpful so tried to be considerate that time). The decor wasn't special, more simple but appropriate. The service was the only sore spot. Initially our server was attentive, but he dropped off as the meal progressed. This was the first AYCE sushi spot to pop up in Sugar Land. It's a chain restaurant with several locations in Houston. Came here for the AYCE lunch option. The menu was pretty standard in terms of AYCE lunch. I did notice there was no beef or pork items minus the ramen. One of the more unique items was the salmon skin salad. If you enjoy crispy salmon skin, this is the item to get! I was surprised that there was an accompanying menu for lunch that included ramen and a few other items. The ramen was scant, but the broth was rather nice. Wasn't a fan of the avocado salad, as it contained an abundance of iceberg lettuce. The sushi itself was pretty good! They weren't overly stuffed with rice like some places. The nigiri was good as well, with hearty portions of seafood. I've been to Sushi Masa twice. Once for a friend's birthday dinner and second with my husband. My first experience was really great! There was a large group of maybe 15 people, when we arrived I think they made the group wait until 1/2 the group was there to be seated. As a vegetarian I was thinking noodles because the all you can eat sushi onky seemed worth it for non vegetarians. I got noodles and they were good! One thing I noted was for the all you can eat sushi, they will not let you order anymore food until you finish what's on your plate- heads up! The second time going was less of a great experience. When we arrived on a Friday evening we were seated and I really wanted sushi so hot vegetarian sushi. When it arrived it didn't look appetizing at all. The vegetables were huge and so the cut of sushi didn't look good, there was also lettuce which I've never seen at a sushi place. I was expecting something different. Veggie sushi is a lot better at other locations. I ate maybe two bites and we left. I think the all you can eat sushi is worth it but if you're vegetarian I'd stick to non sushi options! read more

Right off of 59 in First Colony Commons, this is a fun yet loud sushi spot. Decor is cultural and inviting and greeters at the door are quick and friendly. Waitress came within 5 minutes and we started with the lunch buffet- which is basically anything on the lunch menu. We enjoyed every roll, hand roll and appetizers except the i-10 mango roll. That's an acquired taste! Desserts are free but it's only ice cream. If you want the fried Oreo or fried cheesecake you need to order from the dinner menu buffet option or pay extra. I went here during peak hours with my girlfriend, and even though it was packed, we were waitlisted and seated pretty quick. Sushi Masa was very reminiscent of most other AYCE sushi places I've tried, although I'll say the sushi quality slightly beats my usual spots over on the southeast side. They have a big variety of non-sushi appetizers and sides that are included in the AYCE. Even though I'm there for the sushi, admittedly, the fried rice was among the best Japanese style fried rice I've tried anywhere. I'm always on the look for the non-traditional specialty rolls, so the I-10 and Masa rolls definitely hit the spot. If this was a regular sushi spot, I mightve only given a 4, but the value of the AYCE is the real winner. The server we had was awesome but he said he was leaving for college and will no longer be in town to work there. I think his name was Brandon, not sure. It's been about 2 yrs since I last went back to Sushi Masa for AYCE, and they've definitely improved in terms of everything. The AYCE menu has changed, and many of the options are made differently from before. Even the service and wait times this time were so much better than all of my previous visits. I went as a party of 4 on a Sunday early afternoon. Even though it was busy, I only had to wait 10 minutes before getting a table. We did the AYCE lunch menu for $20.95/person. It comes with a decent variety of sushi, appetizers, soups, tempura, teriyaki, fried rice/noodles, and ice creams. The sushi rolls and the nigiri had a good ratio of rice to the rest. They have regular rolls, hand rolls, and special rolls, which were all tasty. My favorite roll was the Shaggy Dog, and I also tried the 225 Roll, I-10 Roll, Little Tokyo Roll, and the Texas Roll. I also got the shrimp tempura hand roll, but the shrimp itself was not there (it was only the tempura), which was a bit disappointing. Some of the other dishes I ordered were shumai, shrimp tempura, age tofu, yakitori, miso soup, steak fried rice, and steak noodle. My favorites among these were the shumai and the steak fried rice. I also got the red bean and green tea ice creams, and both were really good. I really love the changes that they did to the menu and the foods compared to before, so I would definitely come back here again if I felt like getting AYCE Japanese/sushi in Sugar Land. read more

It is ridiculously difficult to eat sushi when you have a gluten allergy. Sauces, krab mix, soy sauce, tempura batter - all that stuff that can make sushi great can those with a gluten allergy really sick. However, having a gluten allergy isn't an issue at Sushi Masa! I walked in and was given a Gluten Free Menu for AYCE sushi, and there was a front and back filled with options! The bartender grabbed the gluten free soy sauce and seemed very well versed in what I could and could not eat. In fact, everyone was very knowledgeable about GF options, and that made eating here comfortable for me. I love that sashimi is included in AYCE, and even though my 1st round of sashimi was cut unevenly, the tuna was great, and so was the salmon! While I am bias after eating sushi in Vegas for so long, for the price and value, being able to get that much sashimi for $32.95 is unheard of! I almost ate $32.95 worth of sashimi alone! AYCE comes with your 1st alcoholic beverage free or free refills on a free soda/iced tea which is a great bonus, even if it is a small house sake! Let's get to the rolls! I loved the Naruto roll with tuna and salmon but no ponzu. Both were light and fresh, which was great to eat between a roll. No half rolls, which is fine, but the rolls aren't bulky with too much rice at all. I got the Crazy Yellowtail Roll, Rainbow Roll (no kani), and the Nemo Roll (No Soft Shell Crab), and all three were lovely. I enjoyed the Crazy Yellowtail Roll the most because it was nothing but fresh fish inside and on the outside of the roll! Big fan! Instead of krab, they put cucumbers in the Rainbow Roll which I enjoyed a whole bunch, and that Nemo Roll was so nice with the thinly shaved lemon slice on top. But that Crazy Yellowtail Roll was great, and while I did consider getting another, after all the sashimi, I just could not fit in another roll. I enjoy gluten free options at sushi restaurants since they normally have all fresh fish, which I love. I am deeply thankful that all of the staff understood what I could eat on the menu and the modifications needed. I know this review is only 4 stars, but please know that is because I'm a spoiled brat who ate sushi in Vegas which had high quality fish for a portion of the cost we have to pay here in TX. I love how open the space was and how it didn't feel like we were all on top of each other. Plenty of tables, lovely service, and just a great place all around. We had an appt in Sugarland again; we decided to try an AYCE sushi place just to see if they'd be better than Sumo. Spoiler alert; they're not: Service was decent; our waitress was pleasant but we barely saw her. The food was mid: steak was chewy but the rice was good. Shrimp lo mein was good too. The seaweed salad was very good but had cucumber in it. The miso soup tasted like water and the salads had a drop of dressing, which was good so I wanted more. The shumai was tepid and a lil mushy but the apps were very limited. The whole menu was limited; what annoyed me was it was 21$ but if you wanted something decent, it was ala carte. The sushi selection was super limited and mid. The I 10 roll was gross with unripe mango; the 225 roll was good-- what's not to like about cream cheese, fried shrimp, crab salad with crunchy and eel sauce on top?! This is mainly a sushi buffet place, although you are free to do À la carte. Ambience: Noisy, crowded and ambience is not their focus. It's an eating place for hunger, nothing else. Service: Servers are a little overloaded with too many tables and you have to hunt them down and wave at them when you need something. The ship is run a little too tightly and service is faltering. Foods: I did the buffet deal (all you can eat) because my table did all of it this way & I did not want to be different. Quantity is obviously there. What about Quality? Don't even think about it. It's ALL about quantity. The sushis were packed with sweetened fillers to make sure your blood glucose level rise as fast as possible. Next time around (if I ever come back here), I'll just order the plain tuna and salmon rolls. They will take advantage of the "fancy" rolls to add a ton of sweet filler in between. Even the spicy tuna rolls (which are expected to be only savory) were slightly sweet. Business and profit is highest priority, nothing else matters here. Summary: Will I come back, if it's my call? You are asking the wrong person: I am the kind who avoids all buffets like a plague. So, the answer is NO. Strip mall luckily means plenty of free parking too. It was fairly quiet when we came around 5ish and we got sat right away. Our server was nice and explained to us the menu options and what came along with the AYCE vs regular dinner service. We opted for the AYCE cause I just wanted to gorge myself (realizing my stomach capacity isn't what it used to be is slow acceptance). Ordering was easy, our server came by at a pace thay worked for us and was great at checking in. Food came out at a somewhat slower pace than I expected. Food was sort of what you'd expect for an AYCE sushi. Quality was fine (except the scallop sashimi which had an awful slimy texture and my mussel had a bit of grit/shell in it which wasn't pleasant to bite into). My favorite yellowtail sashimi was tender and buttery and I had more than 15 pieces Spicy salmon roll( not on the menu yet) was good Shrimp tempura was good, basically Kirkland tempura shrimp quality Rice was great. Temperature was perfect, not easy in most buffets. Wasn't a huge fan of the salmon or tuna. The rolls pictured here were ok. Asian wonton wasn't great, the fish was slimy and had an off putting texture. Overall a great meal. I have no complaints. I came woefully unprepared for all you can eat sushi, but thankfully, I left full, satisfied, and content. Came on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was packed. Was about a 15 minute wait for a group of 4, which overall, was pretty good for how busy the place was. We opted for the AYCE option and let the one person who had been here before take the lead. The appetizers are great, with a large variety of options. The tempura was nice and crispy, the takoyaki oddly shaped but delicious, the mango salmon and tuna tataki were delicious bites. We had a variety of rolls, ranging from the very strange I-10 roll (which tasted kind of like a salty mango dessert) and a large platter of sashimi to share. The smoked salmon was delicious, a strong smoky flavor. The tamago was also well done. They got the order wrong a few times but overall, everything was great. Then we rounded out the meal with dessert, with cheesecake, fried tempura bananas, and ice cream. The banana was nice and caramelized and was a delicious end for a great meal. In the end, for a meager $36 + tax and tip, it was worth it! We definitely didn't utilize the AYCE as well as we could have, compared with the table next to us who had multiple large platters of sashimi stacked high. One of a few AYCE sushi spots in Houston, very solid lunch pricing at $20.95. There is a bit of a wait during lunch, especially on Labor Day. They quoted a 40 min wait but we ended up getting a table after ~15 minutes. Lots of high schoolers and families here. It took a little while to get our orders in, but after that, the food came in as they were made. Sushi is decent, but the tempura could use improvement. The tempura batter is very thick and pretty meh. I wouldn't order the broccoli or the mixed vegetable (which comes with 1 of each vegetable, which is a lot, but also includes the broccoli...) The gyoza was decent, and the shrimp tempura was probably the best out there. That should be more than enough time for any sane person. I'm personally not the type of person to try to just go all in nigiri or other less filling options; instead, I like to try the different rolls that are offered. I started off with the I-10 and Little Tokyo. The I-10 has thin mango slices on the top and it was my first time trying a sushi roll with mango. It tasted pretty good and I thought the sweetness was just right. The Little Tokyo has cream cheese, spicy mayo, and is fried - definitely a filler. Though, I liked it and would recommend if you're into fried rolls. After this first round, I got the Texas Roll and Red Dragon. For me, the Texas Roll hit the spot with the eel sauce and spicy sriracha on top. The Red Dragon was good as well with the shrimp tempura and spicy tuna that I thought was the best roll in terms of texture. At this point, I was starting to feel the incoming food coma. I ordered some of the non-specialty sushi - I thought the spicy tuna was one that stood out. The hand rolls are also ones that I would recommend as well. In particular, the snow crab was filled with a good amount of kani. In terms of non-sushi, yakitori was delicious. It comes out fresh and hot from the grill. The pepper tuna is a nice, small dish that I would recommend ordering as well. Finally, for desert I got the green tea ice cream. Not too sweet and a good way to finish the meal. My family and I went to eat lunch today at Sushi Masa. The moment we were seated we couldn't help but hear the obviously inebriated guy behind us (with two young children) cursing with raised voice about how "your mother is a liar, your grandfather is a liar" etc. etc. The little girl looked upset, while the little boy was special needs and was just smiling and giggling at the situation. The server took our order and as we waited, the guy continued to get louder and louder, cursing about more family members. None of the restaurant staff was doing anything, so I turned around and said "excuse me sir, but this might not be the most appropriate place to be saying such things." He replied, "fair enough," and quieted down. Our food came out, and I turn to look at the little girl and she was now looking terrified, as the guy kept cursing and started getting louder. I turned once again and said "sir, please she looks terrified." And that's when he stood up all angrily, calling me names and asking if I wanted to "go outside." NONE of the staff (or other patrons for that matter) intervened. I replied that I just want him to stop as the poor girl was terrified. He continued to act aggressively toward me, so my wife called the police. The management only then sent people to check on us, as the guy told the kids to leave. One of the waitstaff came up to me to "deescalate me" even though I was seated, never raised my voice, nor threatened in any manner. I tried to explain what was going on and that it was not me, but he just said "well the other guy is gone, so that's why I'm talking to you." I flagged over the manager to tell her what happened, and explained that none of her staff was paying any attention to this loud, obnoxious guy, to intervene so that others could dine peaceably (not to mention to ensure the welfare of the children). My wife went out front to wait for the police. When they came, my son and I joined her to talk about what happened. The general manager came out saying he was reviewing the security footage. While we're talking, the busboys start clearing our barely-touched food. We motion to them to please stop. The police take statements and we go sit down to our cold lunch. Now missing one soup as it was bussed already. Needless to say, no food could possibly taste any good after that experience. We eat what cold food we can and get the check. They took $10 off for our troubles. So, in short: inebriated man with anger management issues terrorizes minors, threatens another patron, ruining the meal, and the restaurant paid no attention to what was happening on the floor, nor took any necessary actions to help these kids. We, as patrons, had to step in. And in return, we got "deescalated," and $10 off our cold, incomplete meal. Management and staff need to have better training on issues such as this. We were able to ascertain after 2 minutes of arriving that one of their patrons was inebriated, cursing, and terrorizing children. The staff just ignored all of that. Not to mention EVERY OTHER PATRON just stuck their heads in the sand. I truly hope those poor kids are alright. Never eating there again. read more

It was so packed when we came, but we were able to get outdoor seating, and it was honestly great compared to being inside because I felt like we got good attention for our waitress. The ambiance was solid, and I was glad we had our own area sitting outside compared to being inside when it was really loud and busy. Sushi Masa was a decent AYCE spot in Sugarland. Reasonably priced, lots of hot and cold options, and ok service. The dining area is large with lots a lot of seating and includes both booths and tables. Some of the portions for appetizers were pretty small though, like the scallops and shrimp skewers. As far as the rolls were concerned, all fish was fresh overall and no major complaints with the quality. It's probably not my favorite sushi I've ever had, but that's pretty typical of the AYCE experience. My favorite dishes for the night were the bubba gump roll (with shrimp) and the age tofu. My recommendation is to avoid the cold appetizers and just go straight into rolls and maybe supplement with a hot appetizer or two if you're craving one in particular. read more

A very popular place in sugar land for AYCE sushi. I came with a friend for lunch and it was $20.95 per person. We arrived a little before noon and was seated right away, throughout our meal the restaurant slowly got really busy closer to noon. The restaurant is clean and very aesthetically pleasing.
