We've passed by this spot so many times and finally decided to stop in. The staff was friendly and welcoming from the start. We ordered the ceviche (perfect for sharing), a fajita combo, and nachos. Could've used a little more flavor on our entrees but solid overall. Street parking. We lucked up on a street spot but I did see a validation sign when walking in. Music playing but not disrupting table conversation. When we sat we ordered margaritas but never received them. Mid meal we decided to not even remind our waitress. Also it wasn't on our bill, so there just could've been a lack of communication between the young lady that sat us and our waitress. I would rate this place a solid 3.5. It wasn't the best, but it was good. I was worried about the parking situation from reading other reviews but we were lucky enough to find a spot in front of the restaurant. I did notice a QR code that could be scanned at the door for parking validation. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The restaurant was clean but a bit dim. The menu is huge. They bring out a salsa and a pico de gallo. The chips are good. The salsas both lacked flavor in my opinion. They give you tortilla soup with your meal. It was ok. Reminded me of a tomato soup with corn tortillas, also could have used more flavor. I ordered cheese enchiladas and they were some of the best cheese enchiladas I have ever had. First, the margarita (mixer perhaps?) seemed stale or otherwise had a bland flavor to it. Secondly, the food itself was somewhat disappointing. I ordered the enchiladas con mole verde/suiza and it tasted akin to what you'd expect reheated or a frozen meal would taste like. The service was extremely slow. I really wanted to like this place but it was such a mixed bag. The chips and salsa were yummy, I give them that but the tortilla soup was no good. It tasted like the tortilla pieces were fried in old oil and it permeated in the tomato broth. Our waitress came with waters and some chips and salsa and pico de gallo. My friend ordered a taco combination plate and I got the tamal oaxaqueño. Other friend ordered a small cheesecake. The food came out very fast, portions were huge and I ended up taking it home. I felt like although the portions were big, my tamal was rather dry and somewhat bland. My wife and I were in the southside area, and it was time for dinner. We were searching for somewhere to stop in for dinner. We hadn't been to Benito's in a long, long time, so we decided to stop in. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately, there was no wait. Benito's has a MASSIVE menu with SO many options to choose from. My wife is more of a TexMex kind of a gal, versus the more authentic cuisine of Mexico. I'm always adventurous and love trying new and different foods. Benito's has awesome chips and salsa. It was hard to stop eating and dipping the chips. My wife decided on the Chicken Fajita Nachos, and I decided on the Combo #9 which included a cheese chili relleno, chicken flauta and tostada. After a short wait, our platters were delivered to our table. One suggestion I'd like to see are bigger plates. My Combo #9 items were kind of piled on each other, especially the flauta and tostada. The ambiance is beautiful! It's it's so colorful inside! It looked like Mexican blankets were used as curtains. We had a sweet Waitress. She had a pleasant demeanor and was very helpful. She came to check on us several times. She also had a cute uniform. The uniforms are so cute. I wanna work here, just so I can wear the uniform. Lol. Now, on to the food. Lol. There are a lot of Food options. And the prices are average to high. They do have specials and depending on what time you go,you could get a deal. I decided to get the Caldo De Res to. My soup was running over my bowl. It's Mexican Beef Stew with Vegetables. It has Spanish Rice, Cabbage, Zucchini , Squash, and Beef Tips. The Broth was flavorful and Salty. It also includes Tortillas of your choice. I chose Corn Tortillas. The Corn Tortillas were warm and very thin. I really enjoyed them though. As, I ate my Beef stew, I kept saying mmmm several times. Lol. We eat Mexican food two times a week and I took my parents in for lunch. Only 6 people in the entire place, Worst non tasting food I've have ever ate at a Mexican place. Bowl of hot sauce looked good but no heat. Rice was so bland I swore it was rinsed in water. No flavor. My parents both had Fajitas only 5 pieces mostly onion but dad was quite 5 min then spit out the meat that was all grissle. We asked for hot sauce but they had nothing spicy. Not my favorite mole. I try mole everywhere I can and this is bitter and metallic. I personally prefer a chocolate/peanut butter mole. I asked if I could get half and half, they have a green mole also, so I could try both but they said they couldn't do it. Next time, it would probably make sense to at least offer a sample to entice others to come back instead of saying you can't physically put two sauces divided on one plate. I took my daughter to lunch here today as she has cancer, going to chemo treatments and rarely feels well, but it was a huge MISTAK!!! As soon as we walked in the manager and staff looked very uncomfortabl. Long story short, they wanted ys out of there with a quickness. First time visiting this Mexican restaurant, which is in an unassuming building on Magnolia. I would consider it authentic Mexican cuisine rather than Tex Mex. I thought the chips and salsa that was served was very good, especially the pico. I ordered the chicken spinach and enchiladas and they were excellent. Several people ordered the margaritas and they also thought they were very good. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with the quality of the food and the service was also very good. I have no idea why this place doesn't have higher ratings... To us, it was a hidden gem! The queso was delicious, salsa had something unique in its flavor & just the right amount of heat (to be honest, we couldn't stop eating it!) Chips were fresh and crispy. The tortilla soup had a tomato base and a citrusy twist, and was a great light summer menu item. We didn't know it came with our meal, so it was a nice surprise. My margarita was soooo good. It's amazing when you have a really great margarita and realize how often what you have other places is subpar. When you come here - which we advise to do ASAP - get the red mole sauce on whatever they offer. It's smoky and complex. One of my sons commented that it "tastes like Christmas" with the spices and chocolate. Another of my sons was practically crying over the deliciousness of his enchiladas... for all the best reasons. Just all around disappointed. We were seated right away but the service was awful and terribly slow, bland or otherwise inedible food, but the space is clean. All of the food had an odd smell or taste and no seasoning. I set a timer for when I was going to walk out of the place since we'd been seated for far longer than I'd realized at that point and our waitress returned when she saw me looking at my watch to tell me she'd be right back. There was a clear separation of patrons and there was a large party and a number of other guests on the other side of the wall of which all of the wait staff was attentively providing service. Large parties presumably mean larger tips, but one party verse the many of us in the other part of the restaurant seems like a no brainer. The worse part is them adding what I assume is gratuity, since it was 20% more than what was written on the check, without asking all of which wouldn't have been an issue if the service were up to par. Disappointed the word. I've been coming here since I was a kid and more recently pre-covid, but I've not ever received such poor food and service. I can't say I'll be back. read more

Unfortunately the food was just not very good. The soup was drowned in salt and the aguas were not homemade, they are made with powder. My husbands enchiladas were ok but nothing to rave home about. If I had to pick a favorite restaurant of all time, it would be Benito's - no questions asked! Benito's has been a part of my life since I was a baby and it will never get old. The food is authentic and delicious (my favorites are the following - breakfast: Huevos a la Mexicana; lunch: Enchilada Suizas; dinner: Guisado de Puerco.
