I loved this place!!! We were in town visiting friends and made reservations for a Saturday night. The rooftop was very busy and the only table they had for us was actually a couch and chairs. Not exactly what we wanted, but in the end it was perfect. They have a nice cocktail menu but I chose a cosmopolitan. Service was quick and my drink was good. All the food items are tapas. We settled on sliders and egg rolls. I had anticipated 3 sliders but there were only 2. Food was really good. There was live music which was very nice, and the views were great. I have been living on Hilton Head Is., SC for 18 years and have had the very BEST fresh east coast seafood from Benny Hudson's Seafood Market Store! One time, on a very cold and damp week before Christmas, I couldn't get warm and was so sick with asthma, and, for some strange reason I got in my car and bought some of Hudson's fresh New England Clam chowder, and it not only comforted me but cured me! I had never had New England Clam chowder in my life. My all-time favorites at Hudson's are the Fresh caught shrimp and the Fresh salmon flown in from Scotland every day. We were so excited to get some fresh seafood to take home with us. After reading several reviews, we decided we would try this place. Unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. They only had shrimp previously frozen and thawed for sale. When asked about buying fresh, never frozen, we were immediately shut down and told "it's not shrimp season, all we have is previously frozen". We'd just left Hudson's seafood restaurant (not the restaurant located behind the market) and eating lots of fresh shrimp right off their boat. When I asked about buying shrimp that was still frozen, not already thawed out, advised I would have to buy a 30+ lb bag of it. The service was curt and unfriendly. We bought some anyway, as we were pulling out of town on our RV the next day. It was an experience that left me feeling like I wish I'd chosen another market. Our daughter mentioned that fish would be nice for dinner. I searched Yelp and discovered benny Hudson's for the first time (we've visited HHI since 2006...) and we're glad we found it! We ordered twice: - Shrimp and flounder and a lemon and vegetable soup - More shrimp, and their low country boil spices / flavors We took the fish back to our room and dined well for two nights! Completely fresh fish... caught local and brought to the docks and sold right there. For the low country boil, Tonya was helpful in making sure we had the right ingredients... the spices / flavors from Benny Hudson's, to that and water added potatoes and a can of corn and some onion; at the end the fresh fresh fresh shrimp. We picked up some halibut, shrimp and scallops while staying on the island. One of our cab drivers had lived on the island all his life suggested that this is the place to get the best seafood. Everything we purchased was reasonably priced. All were fresh and really nice looking. We cooked the scallops that night and had an excellent meal of them. The halibut only made it one day more in the refrigerator, and like the scallops the meal was delicious. We bought enough shrimp to make two meals for ourselves and we froze them for use at a later date. Again, they were excellent when we cooked them back at home. We were quite disappointed at the seafood restaurants in the area... there were none where we could get reservations in the timeframe we needed for our stay and the other had waits that were measured using a calendar not a clock. We did eat out one night. Arrived about 5:30 to "beat the crowd", but the crowd was already there. We waited 90 min. The meal was really good, but compared to doing our own seafood from Benny Hudson, the restaurants lost hands down. We ate at our motor home for the remaining meals. It's exactly what you would expect, a small place where the fish is just off the boat. A bit rustic. The people there are nice and helpful. They had some suggestions for freezing the shrimp, which, no doubt, added to the quality of the two meals we made from those. Definitely a go to place for seafood. Every thing was so good. Great food, good service, and the friendliest waiter ever (Borg)! Borg was the best, he cut up with us and we all had a great time. There was 10 of us that night and we waited for absolutely nothing. He truly is like a Cyborg! Will continue to come back here every time I come to Hilton Head. Went there based on yelp reviews. They are in the process of making their market much bigger and nicer. The counter person was very friendly and knows his seafood. They have their own fleet and sell fresh off the boat. The seafood is outstanding and delicious. They even advise you how to prepare it if you're not sure. I have bought seafood from Benny Hudson Seafood Market since the 70s. I have never had any problems with their shrimp or fish until Wednesday. The Halibut that I bought was bad, so I called about it. First visit was on 5/25/22. Fish was fantastic, but service and attitude awful. Ordered some shrimp and 2 pieces of salmon. Asked if the employee could cut the skin off, and he simply replied, NO. I asked why, and he responded "We don't do that here and never have." I then asked why not, and he responded "it takes too much time". I almost said keep it, but my wife would have been very disappointed so I accepted the very poor customer service. There was nobody else in the store when I asked, so can't conceive why being so adamant about the policy. Another customer entered the store as I was having the conversation, but was in the process of deciding what she wanted. She smiled at me in disbelief... My wife and I are 70 and pretty shaky cutting skin off. Plus we don't have the equipment cutlery to do so. We have lived in 8 homes across the USA and NEVER had a fish purveyor refuse to cut the skin off, after weighing the fish. The result? We will no longer give the store our personal dinner or party shrimp/scallop business. I searched for an "off the boat" seafood market at Hilton Head and glad I found Benny Hudson's. It's up north near the airport. The fish was beautiful. I brought back haddock, shrimp and scallops. All were wonderful. My only complaint was the fish was placed in a folded piece of paper then put in the plastic take out bag with ice. The shrimp and scallops were both put in plastic storage bags and tied. The ice ultimately leaked onto my car mat by the time I got back to the condo. read more
