This location located on the corner of Ted Lion Td & BustletonAve has been around for years, but I don't recall ever visiting until last night when I went with my daughter and her friend. You could hear the music before reaching the door, and security checked my bag when we entered. My first thought was, Is this a club or a restaurant? The music was good ! I danced in my seat almost the entire meal, I just wasn't expecting that in a restaurant We were seated quickly. There was a crowded bar to the left and a DJ in another corner, but the dining area was much larger than what you would expect in a club. The music was so loud that we could barely hear our server, Angela. We were practically shouting at one another. She asked the DJ to lower the music, but shortly after taking our order, it was turned right back up. The half Bum Salad with lump crab, shrimp, chopped onion,bacon,egg,tomato iceberg lettuce I usually don't eat and the house dressing was very good. I recommend getting the dressing on the side if you plan to take any home so the salad doesn't become soggy. The baked oysters were a no for me because they were covered with too many breadcrumbs. However, the fried mussels with the sauce were delicious!!! They came with eight, and I would definitely order those again. My daughter's friend ordered the $38 Dungeness crab, which came with four (he got lucky! The menu says 2 jumbo clusters) claws, corn, potatoes, and broccoli. The corn didn't have much seasoning, but he enjoyed the crab. Drinks. I ordered a mango peach Bellini that was supposed to contain vodka, but I could barely taste any alcohol. When I ordered an additional shot, Angela brought rum even though the menu said the drink contained vodka. My daughter also had a blue drink and needed to add a shot of tequila to hers. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. Angela checked on us only once after bringing the food and then disappeared. I had to find someone else when we needed assistance. Our bill was $152.88 for two drinks, the Dungeness crab, salad, baked oysters, and fried mussels. An automatic gratuity had already been added, but Angela never mentioned it, and I did not see any sign explaining that gratuity would be included. I only discovered it because I was looking at the bill to decide how much of a tip to leave. Considering the service we received, I would have asked for the gratuity to be reduced, but by then my daughter and I both had headaches from the extremely loud music. So I brought my concerns up to Angela who we had to go search for to pay and we left. People were also allowed to stand directly outside the entrance and smoke, so we walked straight into cigarette smoke when leaving. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I would return to dine inside. I may order the salad and fried mussels for takeout because they were good. If the music were kept around the bar area or lowered enough for customers to talk and hear their servers, the dining experience would be much better. read more

Overall, the food was decent, but it tasted like a lot of it had come straight from the freezer. It wasn't terrible by any means, just nothing memorable. The staff was friendly and polite, but after we were seated it felt like we were forgotten about for a while. The music was at a comfortable volume, which made the atmosphere enjoyable, but the bathrooms were unfortunately pretty dirty. Overall, Benny the Bums is just an average restaurant. Is it worth the price? Not really. Is it the worst place I've ever eaten? Definitely not. If you're in the area and want to give it a try, you'll probably have an okay meal, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. read more

Most of the food was buried in salt, cheap seasonings, and burnt butter (but at least I actually like salty foods). The staff is polite and friendly but expect to wait 40-plus minutes for food. Health code violations abound; for proof, click the attached screenshots or contact Philadelphia's Office of Food Protection and request their Safety Inspection Reports. Came on a Tuesday night with my mom. I had the Crab Leg Special. 1 1/4lb off score crab legs, corn and potatoes, my mom had the crab ravioli. It was okay. Nothing expectaculat. The sauce for the crabs was their special sauce. It was good. Had some flavor. The drink was eh. My mom said you can taste the artificial flavoring in her margarita. Service was good and the ambiance was nice. Our server was very attentive and made sure we were okay. I can't complain about this spot at all! I was hungry, it was late and luckily I came across this place in my search for late night spots in Philly to get something to eat. I stopped in on a weekday after a long work day and when I tell you this was exactly the what I needed. I didn't even get a whole lot--I only had the bum seafood salad and the crab rolls. But the half sale was so filling I can't imagine what the full size looks like; it was load we with crab meat and shrimp and it was also throughout coated in the dressing too. SLOP!! Some of the most disgusting food that I ever had. How can you mess up steamed clams? - you smother them in a thick corn starchy sauce and let them sit for several hours before serving them. It was pretty average looking on the inside - like an around the way spot. This is coming from an out of towner. The broiled salmon was delicious - juicy and well seasoned. If you do nothing else in life, do not order the rice- super dry and old tasting. I actually thought it was shaved carrots when it came to the table. The waitress was kind enough to swap it for mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes *chefs kiss* - however, the cup of butter was odd. Who needed that? They were perfect as is. The crab cake eggrolls were a special but the lump crab meat and that Thai chilli sauce was good too. Last but not least... the bread. It was cold and we could've done without. This has got to be the worst service that I've ever had going to a restaurant/bar. Where should I begin? We were seated way in the back by the bathrooms. A group of waitresses were less than 10 feet away. Later, 2 waitresses appeared to be discussing who was going to take the order. Lo and behold, 15 minutes later, a waitress finally took our order. Food was average. The Seafood salad that people "rave" about is a horrible excuse for a salad. Thousand island dressing with old bay seasoning over iceberg lettuce with a few shrimp and crabmeat is lacking. Then to drown it in dressing is atrocious. Also got the dungeness crabs. The garlic butter was the star. The crabs were subpar alone. Freezer burn and a not fresh taste. Lastly, although there were only two of us, the tip was included on the bill. 150 bucks total (food and drinks) I really hate establishments that do this. My nephew and I went there and were told it was a 20 minutes wait. The "hostess" was very condescending and was offended when my nephew spelled his name fior her. She was having difficulty understanding him so he spelled it. This woman immediately caught a nasty attitude with us. We literally stood there 30 minutes while she seated others that came in after us. I approached her and asked when we were going to be seated and she casually said: "Oh it's going to be another 20 minutes.... We left! Came for Mother's Day, made reservations weeks in advance. Just to get there to a line out the door. Kids working as hostesses and timid and or forgetting the order of which people checked in. Sat down 45 min after reservation time. Ordered drinks and apps.......1 drink from the bar the rest soft drinks/water. the margarita was nasty AF it was noting but syrup. I asked for it with Patron when i tell the waitress it was nasty she said its premade.....so, did you pour a shot on top or just charging me for something i didn't get? When I asked about ETA on our main courses, the waitress goes and checks and said "they have not gotten to it yet" At this point we have been there for 2 hours. This is my first and last time at Benny the Bum's. I found them on Yelp and all of the photos on Yelp was making me drool, unfortunately the actual food was beyond unappetizing. First and foremost, first impression means a lot. When a customer walk in, instead of a greeting, my hub was ignored. If you say the guys behind my hub were ignored also, then it is a "norm", but that wasn't the case, both of the waiters greeted the 2 guys behind my hubby. But what about my hub? He was the first person walking in and waited for someone to acknowledge him....... Btw both of those guys were white, I don't want to play the race card but this is unacceptable. Both of the waiters continue to ignore my hub, so my hub left and ask me to call. I called and the counter girl say she just brung out the food, so my hubby went back inside. Then my hub came back out, and say they said my food is not ready.... I was like ????? You told me it was ready.... My hub went back in after a 3rd attempt and finally got our food. When we got home, one of the bag broke and my platters fell onto the ground. I know I order oysters but the least you can do is to ensure my bag doesn't break . We ordered fresh fried mozzarella, dozens of raw oysters, double lobster mac and cheese, double clam chowder, shrimp and scallop alfredo, seafood jambalaya, and bayside seafood combo. The clam chowder was sour, I tasted one and it had a sour taste to it, it seem like it was sitting in a pot all day. Oysters got pieces of shells in it, I'm trying to eat the oyster not with the shell too. Fried fresh mozzarella and lobster mac and cheese were lukewarm, seems like it was sitting on their counter for a while. We only saw one piece of lobster meat on 1 of our lobster mac. Shrimp and scallops alfredo got a weird taste, especially the scallops. Shrimps tasted frozen and rough in texture, and the scallops got a nasty stench to it...... Seafood jambalaya and bayside pot were also rough in texture. It is not like our bill was $50, our total is around $164, is that a way to get treated at a restaurant? Other yelpers say it is fresh seafood, but what me and hub got tonight was no where near FRESH! $164 totally wasted, never again! read more

We stopped in to Benny the Bum's crab house & bar while here in Philadelphia. Always one of our favorite restaurants, we really looked forward to dining there again. So my wife chose the fried shrimp with broccoli and sautéed spinach while my pick was the fried shrimp with broccoli and seasoned fries. The food was piping hot coming out of the kitchen but the smell and the taste of it made the whole dining experience well worth it. The menu items have stayed pretty much the same but it was priced higher than what it was from the last time we ate here. Always great food and service at any price! So glad we went back. read more

When I lived in Bucks County over 30 years ago we would frequent Bennie the Bums. We were in area this past Sunday we dined in with friends, what a gem of a place to eat in Northeast Philadelphia. Food and service was impeccable. Tells me why this restaurant has been a mainstay in the area. The Levey family should be commended for keeping their standards high. I was at Benny the Bum's last Wednesday for dinner last week with my boss (who is from out of town and I wanted to take her to a place I knew would be good!). Well, just like my previous visits I was pleasantly surprised with the food and the service. The calamari appetizer was great - very sweet and tender and cooked perfectly and a nice sized portion! She had the "Bayside" - Lobster Tail, snow crab and shrimp - steamed & with drawn buttter. While she did say it was tasty, it was oddly served in an aluminum baking pan and everything was drowning in butter. Not the best presentation, so maybe y'all could reconsider how this is served up? -1 star for that. I had the "Hungry Harry" - Jumbo shrimp, sea scallops, crab cake and broiled flounder with Cajun seasoning! All of that plus, the sweet potato fries were fresh, well seasoned and delicious. (Funny that they give you caramel sauce in a container for the fries though...they are naturally sweet...Maybe most Northerners don't know that? LOL!) The drinks and the server/waitress were awesome! She was friendly and attentive! Just an FYI that the hours shown on YELP are wrong, they don't open up until 3 pm! They used to open for lunch...I used to meet clients here at 12 pm.
