I ordered some food for take out and I was extremely disappointed. I had eaten there in the past and it was decent but nothing I ordered this time around tasted good at all. I ordered the beef stroganoff and the beef was extremely tough - could barely cut it with a knife and the sauce lacked any flavor or salt. I also ordered the shrimp and grits and all I tasted was butter. I decided to order the market vegetable which was asparagus and they literally gave me 4 little "sticks" of asparagus. It's too bad - I was really looking forward to a good meal and it's so disappointing paying almost $30 worth of food and having nothing taste good. Maybe it was just an off night...I'll give it one more try before I write them off completely. read more

Benny's was recommended to us so we checked out the menu online, decided on an early dinner, and arrived at 5:30. There were two tables filled and while the place was gradually filling in, there was no reason for the slow pace of service. Maybe I'm just used to a fast city pace. We'd been wondering if we'd be underdressed, but it's relatively casual. I mean, there's paper table coverings. We'd heard that this was a fancy-ish place and the prices are a bit higher, but it's fine to come wearing shorts :-) Our waiter stumbled through the night's specials, rambling on and on awkwardly. It felt gimmicky and uncomfortable. The menu had several spelling typos and we were a bit confused by the Beef Blue burger we ordered, which listed bacon as an ingredient, but also stated it was $2 to add bacon. End result, there's no bacon as standard, so add it if you want it. Our waiter brought complimentary focaccia bread that was pretty tasty. I was a bit confused since it was listed on the menu as an appetizer at $2, but apparently they serve a complimentary plate? We ate it all and it actually tasted better without the oil and vinegar masking the flavor of the bread itself. It wasn't overly oily, as focaccia bread can sometimes be, and it took the edge off our hunger. The burgers themselves were delicious and presented beautifully. The blue cheese was crumbled and slowly melting on the patty. I ordered mine without the spicy mayo (which my other half said was more like thousand island) but I think the blue cheese had some kick because my burger definitely had a spicy afterkick. The meat was cooked to my liking and the flavors blended well. The housemade potato bun was good. After living in the bay area, I've been ruined by overpriced food and burgers that cost $15 without any sides, so I was thrilled to find a tasty (if small) salad served with the burger and a small crostini. It would have been nice if the toppings (lettuce and tomato) were a bit more generous, but I was pleasantly full and satisfied at the end of the meal. Our waiter accommodated my other half's request for no dressing on the salad, since it came with vinegairette, and thoughtfully offered another dressing. My honey said the ranch he got instead was excellent. The waiter was super attentive about filling our water glasses, but it took him quite a long time to come get our order after we were seated and given menus, and then it took a while for him to come clear our plates. All in all, it was a fine eating experience, and the burger was delicious. read more

Each time we've been, the food has been very good and the service excellent. We really enjoy that they use fresh, local ingredients wherever possible. We like going when there is live music or to try one of their dinner specials, which often include 'exotic' dishes (Egyptian, Greek, etc.). The house wine is quite good and a great bargain ($20 for a bottle!). The atmosphere is decent but as others have noted, it could use a little updating. I've been here twice with my family, once for normal dinner and once for tapas night. The food was okay. My meat was a little overdone when we went here the first time (can't remember what the dish was called). I can highly recommend the Chocolate cake- it was very tasty and very rich. I really love Benny's. They are a perfect place for lunch-I have never been there for dinner. The food is good and the service very nice...I think that a lot of their clientele are there because they like the owner, Margaret, who is a very active and admired member of the Helena community. I know that a lot of people, including my sister, have had their wedding cake made there. They are GORGEOUS, but taste awful. The fondant is tasteless and the cake is bone dry. I may be alone in giving Benny's a low rating, but as a person with allergies, I found this restaurant impossible to eat at. I have tried to have lunch there twice, and both times the waitress was visibly annoyed with me and didn't make much effort to help me find something on the menu I could eat. I even had to ask her twice to refill my ice tea. Other people love this place, but if you have allergies or food sensitivities, be warned. read more

I wanted to like it but our lunch was mediocre at best. We arrived before 1pm and they were out of the chicken panini - how does that happen? I ordered the tuna salad, it was fine. My daughter ordered a cheese panini, she said it was blah, she had a side of tomato soup which had absolutely no flavor and the madeline it came with was dry and flavorless as well. Really good food! We wandered in for a light dinner, and we ordered two of the Tapas off their menu- the small portion of curry and the lamb burger sliders. Both were excellent and it was the perfect portion size for people who eat a little less. We will definitely be going back. The atmosphere is a little fancy, but the prices weren't ridiculous. The service was excellent on a Thursday night- our water glasses were always full but our waiter wasn't hovering. read more

Benny's is one of our favorite places to eat dinner when we're in Helena. The food is first class, creative menu with both full dinners and a wide selection of small plates. The prices are very reasonable especially considering the music that accompanies dinner. Service can be variable though. Tonight our waiter was a young man that didn't seem to have any idea how to do his job. It took forever to get our wine and he kept forgetting what he was up to, such as bringing a couple of tapas, saying he would be back with small plates so we could share, and then forgetting to come back. The slow service did allow us to enjoy the fine music longer however. read more

Walked in for lunch w/ my kids on a Saturday. They had, in their words, the Best Sandwich Ever. Grilled Hutterite chicken and cheese w/ Cilantro pesto. The fact that they use locally sourced ingredients when possible (like those delish chickens) made me try them in the first place. I had the green thai curry - very good. Nice heat, good portion size. I will definitely come back. If you want real food, no processed crap and no nasty chemicals, go there. Thanks for a great meal!!! read more

We have traveled extensively. We were referred to Benny's Bistro by the B&B we were staying at. We found Benny's to be very inviting and accommodating. We arrived 15 minutes before they opened. An employee saw us through their windows as we started to walk slowly by. She opened the door and invited us in. We sat down had a glass of nice wine and studied the menu. We ordered off the appetizer menu to get a good sampling. We were so overwhelmed with surprise and delight with the neuvo down home flavors and reasonable portions that we decided to accept the binge and ordered their special pork chop dinner plate that was only offered on weekends on top of our 5 devoured appetizers. And! They accommodated us on a Thursday evening to our delight. It was prepared as requested, tender and delicious. We were so impressed that we ordered dessert on top of it all. Not something we ever do. Their breads and desserts are prepared on site and they use local produce. The dining experience is enhanced with live piano and guitar. A large party happened to be dining that evening. The wait/floor staff were stretched, maybe. That turned out not to matter! The suchef, Adam, turned out to be particularly attentive to our needs and attended to them personally while never missing a beat preparing meals for all. read more
