We were considering motorizing a gate & had them come out to provide a quote. My only complaint was that this was the first ever vendor I used where the initial quote changed drastically from the first and second visit for the same job. The reasoning was that the first visit & second visit was done by a different person so once the owner came out which was the second time, he said the actual price was quite a bit more and firm about it. My suggestion is you have the owner Ben come out initially so he can provide an accurate quote. Also, make sure to get the quote in writing immediately as the price difference was not minimal so it's better to be safe. Update: I originally gave them a 2 star rating but decided to change to 3 star as the owner contacted me apologizing and I felt guilty as I know times are tough. He agreed it wasn't the best practice to give 2 completely different quotes & that it would never happen again. read more

If you're looking for an unlicensed, uninsured, incompetent "contractor", then Ben is your man! If you are looking for a "contractor" who lacks at least decent communication skills, skips appointments or shows up late -if at all--then Ben is your man! We hired Ben in June of 2023 to install a vehicular gate. Since we never had a vehicular gate before, this would be a completely new install project. The completed install would require a gate operator, gate guidepost, stop post, track, and, of course, a gate. All new stuff, not a replacement. By the end of the project, we realized we had made a huge mistake in hiring this incompetent, unlicensed, disorganized so-called "contractor", who also lacks good basic communication skills! So, what was the problem with his "workmanship"? Just about everything he did! In fact, his work was so bad--and let me emphasize the word "BAD"--that we ended-up hiring a licensed, qualified, experienced gate installer to review his install and make recommendations as to what needed to be fixed/replaced/repaired to make this a safe, correct, properly installed product. So, we first sent Ben a text message (see attachment entitled "Redacted printout of sent text message"), then followed-up with a demand letter (which consisted of a cover letter that reiterated our demands and a reformatted print-out of the original text message) sent via USPS (see attachment entitled "Redacted sent cover letter"). Ben was required to complete ALL the items on the demand list by August 26, 2022. By the time August 26th came and went, the ONLY item he completed to our satisfaction was item #5 from the demand list. So, we now had to hire a licensed contractor to redo most of the sloppy, crappy job Ben did. Thus, we hired the contractor that provided the original analysis of Ben's work. It took some doing but he got it done--at an additional expense--and the gate works great! The new contractor clearly new his stuff and was also recommended by the manufacturer of the gate operator. We couldn't be more pleased with his work! But we weren't done with Ben just yet! I ended-up filing a complaint (see attachment entitled "Redacted complaint filed with the CSLB1,2,3,4,5") with the Contractor State License Board (CSLB) due to the fact that he is unlicensed and is required by law to have a license when engaging in contracting work. Nor is he insured, bonded, does not pay workman's comp, pay the appropriate taxes related to wages, doesn't seem to have a business license, and is probably paying his workers "under-the-table" (which also means he is probably paying less than minimum wage). After receiving my complaint, the CSLB decided to investigate. Upon completion of its investigation, I received a letter from the CSLB, dated 6/29/2023 (see attachment entitled "Redacted response from the CSLB"). Basically, the CSLB found him in violation of operating WITHOUT a contractor's license and one or more sections of the California Business and Professions Code. He was ordered to pay a fine and to CEASE all work related to unlicensed contracting activity. We have not yet filed a claim against Ben in small claims court to recover the additional cost to have the gate properly installed. As far as we can determine, it's not clear as to what assets he has that can be used to collect if a judge does rule in our favor. So, unless you want or are okay with a sloppy, crappy gate install/repair/replacement done by Ben of Ben's Gates and Door, I--and I cannot emphasize this enough--suggest you TOTALLY avoid this idiot! Otherwise, you'll be the idiot for hiring him, even after reading this review! But, then again, he's been ordered by the CSLB to STOP all activity related to "all unlicensed contracting activity". read more

This is a very overdue review. While Ben is a friendly person, I would advise potential customers to seek recommendations from their local neighbors, instead of relying on Yelp. That was a lesson learned for my young family and I. We reached out to Ben (after seeing positive reviews on Yelp) in January 2020 to fix our broken wood, alleyway gate. He met with us, gave us an estimate that we found reasonable, and we submitted a deposit. The pandemic hit, and it became increasingly difficult to contact Ben. We were more worried about his health, if anything. Eventually, our gate was completed in summer 2020, after months of back and forth, with Ben explaining his wife was pregnant and there were complications. We were very understanding, given the circumstances. At one point, we just wanted work to be done, so that we could move on from the experience. Was work done? Yes. Was the quality of the work what we anticipated/ paid for? Absolutely not. The gate appears put together haphazardly, with visible nails coming unhinged. Not even a year later after the work is done, the gate is falling apart, and my spouse had to repair it multiple times. Ben is a very nice person who I know is working hard to make ends meet for his family. First of all, I called a few places asking for an estimate for my gate to be repaired and to extend the height of a few sides of the gate because the previous company who did my gate did not level it correctly about a decade ago.Those that I called never showed up so I decided to call Ben's Gates. Once I called Ben, he picked up right away and I asked when he can come out to take a look at my gate. He said he can come out the same day which was surprising. My electric gate on drive way can not close with the remote control and they came to got it resolved by disconnected the sensor . Technically is not fixed because it will be expensive to replace the sensor + labor. However it did solve the issue that the gate now can be open and close with the remote without the sensor . This review is long overdue. Ben came to our rescue in December 2021 when we moved into a new home. Though I first thought the quote was high, it was comparable to others I sought out, and most importantly Ben was able to get the job done within 10 days. Every other company gave me a 6-8 week time horizon. This was important as we felt our car would be exposed in our new home's driveway, and we wanted the extra security of a gate. The look of the gate was great; it perfectly matched the wrought iron fence surrounding our yard. As promised, Ben put it up in short order. He was kind and courteous, and when we had a few snafus with the motor early on, he came back within a few hours of calling to fix the issue. 4 months on the gate works perfectly. I never write reviews, but I felt the need to share our experience. I really liked Ben when he came to quote me for fabrication and installation of an electric driveway gate. On 1/30/20, in my driveway, he had me sign for a $3000 deposit and said he'd email me the receipt, which he did not. Over the next month, he completed 60% of the install but did it SO SHODDILY - I was truly shocked when I got home to see the dented, dinged, scraped, and ill-fitting, poorly constructed gate that had been installed. I took a bunch of pics, texted him right away thinking, it must've been his assistants who installed this, he's going to be shocked and appalled and come right back to fix it. This wasn't the case, and he responded with 'we'll fix it', which he barely did, and over the next month, he gave us the runaround like crazy. At times we were worried that he must've had COVID because he'd gone MIA (it was at the beginning of the outbreak) and then he would text and say he was on his way, and then not show up, and then randomly text 3 days later after not responding to our texts, and say he was 15 minutes away and then wouldn't show at all. It happened at least 4 times in one month. Or he'd say something happened to his truck, or the equipment he needed was broken - just so many excuses, one after the other. We were angry and frustrated, but then when we didn't hear from him for nearly 2 weeks, and sent him a more stern text than any of our previous kind, concerned texts, his wife texted us and said he was in the hospital and that he'd get back to us soon. Despite being frustrated by the situation he left us in, we were very concerned about him, and texted to tell him so. We also didn't know if maybe this was another lie... and we still don't know... and ultimately the job wasn't finished, he never showed back up, and stopped responding. So... we found another contractor to finish the work. He told us that the gate was so poorly constructed that should we have strong winds or rain there's no way it'll hold. We texted Ben that we were going to contact the credit card company to reverse half of the charges, which we did. He didn't respond to our texts. Today I got a letter from the credit card company showing the message Ben submitted to them to dispute my dispute, in which he lied and said that the $3000 I gave him was done so after he 'completed the job professionally to the customer's satisfaction and that the customer received the attached receipt, authorizing the payment.' He continued with 'I was not aware of any dissatisfaction that the customer experienced and reached out to the customer to resolve after receiving the dispute'. Ben, you didn't reach out to me to resolve anything so, I'm reaching out to you here to make sure you know we are very much dissatisfied. I'm so bummed to be put in the position of having to warn your other would-be customers. What a huge waste of my time this continues to be. read more

I had Ben install a brand new gate at my home. The installation process was not smooth, but I was willing to forgive what was going on because I'm a reasonable person. However, post (expensive) gate installation there have been numerous issues with the gate sinking and not closing properly. For a while I dealt with having to lift the gate to try to lock it, but it continued to get worse. He came out to "fix" it and within a few weeks it was sinking again. It got so bad after the rains that the entire gate was now full of water and wouldn't drain. It was so heavy I couldn't even get the gate closed at all. It took three people to lift the gate up so I could close it. I explained to Ben this was a security issue for me and he said he would come to fix it. Over and over again he would not show up. Each time there was a new excuse. He always said he would come on a Sunday, because that is what was convenient for him, not the customer. I'd try to nail down a time and he wouldn't respond and not show up. I HAVE NEVER IN ALL MY YEARS DEALT WITH A MORE FLAKY BUSINESS OWNER THAN BEN! I HAVE EVERYTHING DOCUMENTED.
