They have to be the worse gun store on long island. Everyone there is rude and condescending. They didn't have the gun I wanted to look at in stock, so I asked if they could call me when it came in. He took my name and said he had my info since I already had purchased a gun there. Got a call today that it was in. When I got there to look at it, he said the purchase order was already written up? I never told them to order it for me, never said I will buy it and never gave him a deposit?? Instead of saying they made a mistake and just showing me the gun, which I am possibly going to buy, 4 of them ganged up on me so I walked out and will buy my future guns somewhere else.. read more

This place is not for beginners, they will take advantage of your lack of knowledge and sell overpriced low quality cool looking stuff. They are probably the most expensive gun shop in LI. Their advice is profit oriented and their staff is dishonest. I'm an avid shooter and hunter and shop in just about all gun stores on the island with the exception of this place. I haven't been to this place in 5-6 years as I know how they conduct business. About a week ago I figured I tried them again as I just moved not too far from them.. boy they have only gotten worse. I brought in a Winchester 94 Centennial edition 1894-1994 16" 30-30 carbine UNFIRED (rare and expensive) and a Russian Saiga ($1000 AK) with the box and original paperwork for them to give me a price as they advertise they buy used guns. THEY OFFERED ME $100 FOR THE WINCHESTER AND $125 FOR THE SAIGA. Ladies and gentlemen, do yourself a big favor a skip this place or at least, GOOGLE every word they say, every price they give you. Was ready to buy, walked around the store for about 15 minutes looking at hand guns. one oerson was in the store being waited on , when he was finished and left the man went in the back. there were three employes in the store and not one asked if they could help or if i needed help. 5 Stars across the board. Starting from Charlie in the range, who is a CLASS ACT, and the entire staff, I had a great experience here. My experience in buying guns was from another store that I will not name. INVENTORY is the name of the game. Earlier in the same day I was shopping for a revolver. The store where I was initially shopping had maybe 5 in stock. Benson's had over 100? Maybe more? I could not believe what I was able to see, touch, hold. I walked out (not literally due to the shuffle) with 4 guns. They took their time and showed me as much as I wanted to see. All of my questions and my son's questions were answered. 5 stars, NO LESS! He was trying to buy it under the Suffolk county government discount program . they didn't seem to want to assist him and said it would take 3 + weeks . Crap, pure and simple. Employees are rude and unknowledgeable. They wouldn't let me handle a firearm because I didn't have a NY Pistol License. I am a cop in FL and HAD MY OWN GUN ON ME. I explained HR218 to these nimrods, and that I am allowed, by federal law, to carry a firearm anywhere in the US (with a few exceptions). I was fully prepared to purchase the firearm I was going to look at, but after that debacle, I decided to hold out. I found it cheaper in FL anyway. Oh, this place also owns the Executive Gun shop in Medford, and if you need to see the reputation they've got, just find them on Yelp. The entire operation is a joke. read more

I hate this place. The people are rude and they scam you. The prices are way to high, and some times they talk out of their A$$. I was looking for a specific type of ammo which was hard to find, so as a last resort, I went to Bensons. They charged me $186 for two boxes of 20 rounds. They told me I would be hard pressed to find it anywhere, including a place like Cabelas. Well, as fate would have it, I was at Cabelas the other day while attending a sportsman show.. And I bought 4 boxes of 20 rounds for $160 at Cabelas. Thanks guys, I saved $20 on twice the amount of ammo. I've never heard of ANYONE who likes Bensons. I called Benson's looking for a FFL dealer to have a firearm shipped to me. They guy that answered the phone was rude, kept breaking in as I tried to explain what I needed, and after telling him the model of the firearm he asked me if that was "the new one". I told him that it was and he immediately told me that he wouldn't help me because they carry them there, so he wouldn't help me ship one in that I was buying elsewhere. All I was looking for was someone to handle a business transaction for me, that I am more than willing to pay for. When I explained that I wasn't looking to purchase it, and that I won it in a Ducks Unlimited contest he finally said he'd do it but only because it was from Ducks Unlimited. I HATE to badmouth a gun store because, hey it's NY and it's hard enough to own guns here... but they lost a customer today. read more

Your experience at this gun shop will largely depend on the salesperson helping you. Most of my trips there resulted in frustration as most of the salespeople just suck, they don't acknowledge you when you come to the counter, and some are down right combative. On top of that be prepared to spend top dollar for EVERYTHING. The only positive I see is that they have the selection. There are plenty of choices in the area, no need to go to this store and get abused, especially in your wallet. read more

These people are RUDE and unknowledgeable. Went in to buy some .45 long colt for my Rossi Circut Judge rifle. salesman asked to see my pistol permit (don't have one ). When I explained to him that it was for a rifle I got back a cold stare of disgust. I don't think he knew how to answer that. He had to check to see if I was right. Being that there were 6 different models of that rifle on the wall behind him, I felt he should have known that You no longer need a pistol licence to purchasa that shell. Then asked for .410 slugs for the same gun ( it fires both ) and was given a major attitude. The store had no other customers, so perhaps I was useing up too much of his internet surfing time. I think I'll spend my money at Dicks sporting goods, a little more expensive but great salespeople. read more

Can't beat Bensons on selection and accessories. 50-50 chance on service. You will either get the nicest clerk in the world, or a total asshole. My #1 shop. STAFF: Stuttering, tall, grey haired guy is unhelpful & mean. Round, long haired guy is nice on some days. Skinny, balding middle aged guy is owner, mostly nice. Everyone else under 55 and the 2 young adults that work there are awesome. read more

To answer Jason, you're absolutly right about the law, but unfortunately NY has become increasingly hostile towards gun shops. Even NYC sued firearm dealers because they legally sold firearms to eligable clients who sold them to make a quick profit. I recently traveled upstate to Herkimer, and stopped in at Herb Phillipsons, a popular outdoor outfitter in central NY. They refused to sell me a beautifully engraved double barrel coach gun because I was "from the city". I live five minutes from a farm and twenty minutes from several ranges. Don't blame the gun shops for the paranoia, I don't know of any retailer that would refuse a sale unless they had a good reason. As for their range in Medford, it is what it is. They charge you ten bucks to shoot for an hour, and they don't hassle you. For a hundred you get a year membership unlimited. It's dimly lit and poorly ventilated, but they're open late and it's a perfect place to go to relieve stress. If you want, you can go to a range like the one in Ridge where they charge you good money to get yelled at over the loudspeaker by a grouchy old man and sit for cease fires every ten minutes. read more

Bensons is a very good and convenient gun shop. Im happy to have them around especially since Long island is so liberal. The only thing thats bad about the shop is the tall old slightly bald guy that walks with a limp. Hes always so nasty and he made my first time there uncomfortable. This is directed towards Medford shooting range! You suck! I got blamed for delibritly shooting the clips that hold the paper up,then you charge me 12$ to replace them and a piece of wire? And on top of that give me an attitude and throw me out of the range and banned me and my dad. I don't mind the $12 bucks but your customer service sucks your attitude sucks and I wouldn't recommend you to my enemies! I will be sure to tell everyone I know not to use your range for the above reasons! It will cost you a lot more in bussiness and lost customers then $12.00 dollars read more

After spending all most professional life making and keeping appointments, there are two things that will prevent me from being a customer; If a shop says that they open at 10am, I expect them to open at 10am and rudeness. I can be tolerant of a couple of minutes but when the shop employees are standing around with all the lights on, the "Open" sign is flashing in the window and a customer, me, tries the door three times only to find it locked, well at ten after ten am I left. Goodbye Bensons. I have to drive home and get ready for my job AND BE AT MY JOB ON TIME!. I am buying my 1911 at another, friendlier and prompt shop tomorrow. read more

Their nice and good service, when the owners Daughter is their she is good too, or the guy with the arm tattos and beard and glasses. The other nice kid got fired. I was looking to purchase a Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump action shot gun for my home. I checked out a bunch of gun shops on line. There were about 3-4 bad reviews for Bensons gun shop. I called and spoke to a female who told me they had 3 of the gun I was looking for in stock, the 2 other gun shops I called did not. So I was heading out to yaphank anyway I thought I would check out the shop myself. I walked in and right away Dave came up and asked if i needed help I told what I wanted and he was great very knowledgable showed me over to the area of this large gun shops where the shot guns were. I explained it was my first gun for my home he showed me how to use it and explained the gun in detail showed me how to take gun apart for cleaning and set me up with ammo and a case. The gun was priced right, I was treated with respect and Dave was a real gentleman. This is the shop for me they have a large selection of guns and the staff is great thank you Dave I hope to visit Bensons again soon... KCK read more
