Where are the great restaurants in Salem? This isn't one of them. We go to Salem frequently and our favorite innovative restaurant is gone so we tried here. Oh we were warned it was nothing special despite its big city feel. We ordered goat cheese in romesco sauce... It was ok nothing great- you can make this at home... Very easy!! Wine selection is fine had a great glass of Zerba cab from Walla Walla but really $14.75 per glass? Ordered the hanger steak, good flavor cooked perfect and chewy. Like eating razor clams... The green beans were blanched, not cooked tender crisp. If the largest portion of food on the plate is beans cook them correctly! Garlic mashed was light on the garlic. The food had no wow factor. Lastly, if you are bigger than a size 12 or bigger than a double d don't sit at the end booth.. Trust me you will squish. read more

The service is always consistent friendly helpful staff. The food has always been pleasing as well price, and portion, I really enjoy the happy hour menu- cocktails and a snack best in Salem I think. Just tried the Korean lettuce wraps they were spicy and slightly sweet. Try them. read more

Always come here when I'm in the area, usually for lunch. The veggie stir fry is really good and just recently tried the Korean chicken lettuce wraps which were great! Waitresses are nice enough if only a little on the slow side. Definitely would recommend! read more

This is one of the few good restaurants in Salem. The stuff on the regular menu is pretty good and I've had them make me things that weren't on the menu twice: once it was a crab louis (and I don't remember what I asked for the first time they did it for me). Which kind of makes the case that the menu is pretty limited. They have a good variety but not lots of choices within each category. Lately we have been going in for happy hour. I really like the crab cakes and the ahi. It's just fun to get a bunch of friends or co-workers and order a bunch of small plates and sit and talk for a few hours and this is a good place to do it. read more

We had dinner at Bentley's last night (Sat Jan 19) and it was fantastic. We have been there many times and always find the food excellent with an extensive wine list. The decor is beautiful while still being comfortable. We had a very small issue with our server but the manager was right there to take care of everything and she was very professional in spite of my lack of tact. We had our holiday dinner for employees at Bentleys last night, and it was fabulous! The food was excellent, the service was wonderful and the staff really put effort into making it feel like a very special occasion for our guests - including having a custom printed menu for us . Almost everyone chose the Bistro Steak which was delicious, but the Pork Chop got good reviews too. The desserts were both a big hit - creme brulee and a dark chocolate marquise (like a flourless cake). It was the perfect combination of a festive, elegant atmosphere, great food and quality service. The atmosphere is classy and upscale, but the food quality and service does not live up to the decor. We made a reservation for six people and when we arrived the table was not ready. Ten minutes later the table was still being set. By 15 minutes in we were being led to our seats. Not a huge wait but more than expected with a reservation. The hostess brought us five menus for the six of us, mentioned she missed the last menu, but then never returned with the last one. A couple ordered soup as a starter and said they were sharing it, but were only brought one spoon. They have a wine rack in the waiting area and offer wine pairings on the specials menu, but the staff makes little effort to talk about the wine and seem to have limited knowledge of the offerings (we never pushed our server on this point so it might just be that they were busy). It would be nice to get a bit more explanation about the wines especially the ones listed as pairings that are ordered with the meal. Not huge issues on their own, but the little things that show how much care and attention to detail the staff and management puts into service. The food quality was also lacking. I'm not going to be unfair and compare this to true fine dining. I was not expecting anything very creative from the chef or anything extra special in the presentation but I did expect solid, great tasting offerings made with quality ingredients. I ordered a Wagyu tritip which was one of their specials and it was just OK. Not really bad but not special in any way. The meat had a lot of seasoning on it and was cooked just like I ordered it but was very tough and hard to cut. Tritip is never exactly melt in your mouth but when two of our party order it and both find the steak knives not sharp enough to cut it properly that is a problem. One person ordered mahi mahi and it was again not objectionable but did have a distinctly fishy flavor which often speaks to the freshness of the fish. Everyone else's dish was also just ok. I honestly expected more and hope this review is not seen as a slam but more as constructive criticism for their management. This restaurant could be really great with a bit more focus on service and food quality. read more

I travel a lot. I wanted a steak for dinner tonight and a year ago had been to this restaurant for what was a pleasant meal. I returned this evening and despite great staff the steak/meat was just awful. At first it was under cooked and while it was replaced the next steak delivered was not edible. There were offerers to comp the meal but my dinner was ruined. Don't order the steak in any form here. read more

I was at Bentley's grill a few days ago for the first time and I was impressed of how nice it looked in there. I got their Spring Fling drink, it was a martini and it was yummy. I got 3 appetizers and I only liked one :( the chicken satay is one of lamest I've had. I tried their pot stickers and another strike but the mac and cheese was good, with a crunchy cheese melt on the top and some kind of bread crumbs perhaps. Bentlys has a very nice interior look. The atmosphere can be quite enjoyable and seems to have an area to sit in that will meet your desires. Their food is really a home run or a complete whiff. I hate to say it that way but it is the simple truth. Some of the stuff Chef Derrick and his crew make are absolutely wonderful (crab cakes, Ahi Tuna), others are just gross(steaks smothered in YUCK!!!). Their "specials" are the same as their regular menu...home run or whiff. Their cocktails seem to be just OK. Ive been served Bloody Marys that were made will bad Tomato juice and when made with good tomato juice they are just OK. Their Mai Tais can be very good of made wrong depending on who is behind the bar. Really folks is it that hard to make such simple drinks? Most of their servers are friendly and well informed on the menu and can help you with any questions you may have. Their Hostesses on the other hand.....well I'd fire them if they worked for me. More often then not they are clueless as to what is on the "specials" menu. That isnt good for a restaurant when customers call to ask in advance. This has happened to us . Before driving to Bentlys we called before heading down and inquired about what their nightly specials were and we were told"ummm we have a pizza" when we asked about their wild game specials or sea food specails we were told "we dont have anything like that". Knowing we were ill informed we went in anyway hoping to find a nice "special" to enjoy. Both my wife and I ended up ordering from the non existent "Specials" menu and loved our meals. Hopefully they'll get things like this under control. we will continue to go back because more often than not we enjoy ourselves and leave satisfied with the meals we have been served. read more

A very Bad Experience.. Ordered an appetizer & dinner, both showed up at the same time, it took over 45 minutes and the appetizer was cold & my burger was raw. the french fries were perfect, but by the the time it took me to get ketchup, they were too cold to eat. the restaurant was about 75% full, I would hate to see them with all the tables full. this is my first trip to Salem & surprisingly, every restaurant has been 5 stars, but not this one. i will definitely avoid this one on my next trip out & I suggest you do too... read more

We stayed at the Grand for 4 nights while in town for a wedding. Each evening, we had dinner, drinks, or both at Bentley's. All of the food was great, and drink prices were fair (especially at happy hour, which we did not miss). What really struck us was how great the staff was every night. They were very accommodating as our group grew a couple times and they were able to quickly find a larger table for us. The manager came by a few times to check on our service. I was so impressed with the staff that I complimented the manager. He said that he is very proud of his staff (and it shows). They have a good variety of craft beers, a great selection of wines, and a menu that will have something for everyone. Some recommendations: The pizzas are amazing, the prawn cocktail is a lot of bang for the buck as it is filled with bay shrimp as well, the french fries are absolutely some of the best ever. I just suffered through the worst meal ever and am so disgusted with Bentley's Grill that I would suggest no one visit! The only reason I went was for a recruitment dinner organized by by my husband's possible future employer. We suffered through terrible service where we were ignored for long periods of time, were not brought any bread, did not have our water refilled and waited for the bill for far too long. We were told the chef would cater a vegan meal for us since there are no vegan options on the menu. Earlier when I came and checked the menu when the restaurant first opened I was told by the hostess that the chef would be able to easily accommodate vegans. When it came to the meal our server told us the chef would create a special dish for us and asked if we had any preferences. We said our only restrictions are that we avoid all animal products. I was thoroughly disappointed when we were brought plates of very plain rice pilaf covered in overly salted bland and undercooked vegetables. It was the most bland, uncreative and unimpressive meal I have ever eaten! Anyone I know could have made a more tasteful meal and brought it out hot (instead of just the plate being hot). If my husband gets the job in Salem I know one restaurant I will not return to and tell all friends and family to avoid! read more

This place had a great atmosphere! It has a great location within The Grand Hotel, and was very easy to find. We were seated fast and the wait staff was very friendly. We got to sit next to the gorgeous indoor fire pit, and it really set the mood. The food was hot and delicious! I'm picky when it comes to pasta, and mine was cooked wonderfully. My husband had the blackened snapper and it was equally as delicious. We would definitely recommend/ go back! read more

We were staying at the Grand Hotel and typically don't patronize the hotel restaurant, but we were guests of an international company director who was buying. 14 in our party and there was a semi private room. By that I mean there were doors on two sides and walls to separate the room from the rest of the restaurant but no ceiling. So though we couldn't see what else was going on, we certainly could hear everything as the room was right next to the bar. Kind of loud. Our bar was open and my Boston ice tea was not on the menu but our waitress came right back with my drink after I described it to her. Our menus were waiting for us. First the best artisan olive bread I've ever had, then w each had a choice of three first courses, three main courses and three desserts. I had the seafood chowder which was excellent. Lots of seafood and not to heavy on the potatoes. Many of us had steak, some had the ravioli and a few had the rock fish for main courses. Everyone seemed very impressed and all but two of us finished our meals. My steak was cooked perfectly, garlic mashed potatoes and a side vegetable were great too. For dessert the creme brule could have had a thicker "crust" and my chocolate cake with a very fancy name seemed quite dry. BUT our service was excellent and that isn't always easy with large parties. No one had to wait to eat, water glasses were refilled promptly and we had a great time. We sat in the bar, enjoyed one of the microbrews on tap, and ate appetizers, soup and salad. I especially enjoyed the calzone with dungeness crab and artichoke. Nice ambiance. Small menu. Nothing to fantastic. Don't go for a weekday lunch. One server, and while the speed of service isn't terrible the server doubles as a bartender and obviously has minimal training in mixing drinks. My Cadillac Margarita was not good. I always order the steamer clams because it's hard to mess up clams, white wine, garlic, lemon and parsley. At dinner no problems, once again not spectacular but I dig clams. At lunch, a whole nother story. This is where they bring out the third string line cooks. Every time I end up with multiple unopened clams and whoever preps for lunch doesn't know how to soak em, cause they are often gritty. I'm pretty sure I've been served a couple of clams that were forced open. The hinge of the shill was utterly flacid and they tasted like they'd been dead for three days. So dinner acceptable for salem fair. Not a bad place if you want to impress a "town girl" but don't even think about the steamers at lunch. read more

We've been to Bentley's about 20 times since it opened. It is one of our favorite restaurants, especially if I want to dress up a be classy. The food is always predictably good and fresh and is served promptly from an open kitchen. The servers are very polite and know just when to show up so as not to interfere with your conversation. We had a wedding shower for our daughter and it was beyond amazing. The food, the staff, the set up, the room...everything was amazing. I couldn't believe the service we got and to be honest we had 20 people including wine and tip was under $600.00. That is amazing and well worth it for not having to set up clean up or cook! Bentley's was great--but not for the food. The experience was lovely. I sat at a bar and chatted with Abby, a lovely bartender who was engaging but not invasively so. The food was incredibly disappointing. I had the ahi tuna which was bland and not as fresh as it ought to have been. The black olive tapinade was also not that great making the added seasoning so incredibly average. I also had the baked goat cheese and romesco. That was okay as well. The bread was well smothered and tasty, but that's just bread. I wanted a bit more out of the romesco. The goat cheese was good, but the sauce was rather heavy so the contrast with the cheese did not provide a good balance. At any rate, thank goodness for Abby and her drinks because I would have had a mediocre time in Salem and the Grand Hotel otherwise. The people watching and TVs with NBA Playoffs helped too, but really the service made it a positive experience. read more
