The service and atmosphere were amazing!! However, the food wasn't up to par for to match the environment. First and foremost, the bread were cold. We judge on the bread. We should have known. The 12 dollar salad was very unappetising. There were a lot do greens but very little of the rest. And the chef cut up a somewhat brownish avocado and very little of it. The chicken was tender, however lacking flavor. The split pea soup was too herb-y w 2 different colored herbs, clearly it wasn't fresh, and it was too salty. The macaroni and cheese was delightful to look at, had a nice crunch on top, but flavorless and not enough cheese. The avocado burger and fries were amazing! Juicy and bacon were the thick cut. I had this experience as to go. My boyfriend and his friend dined there but I was working so I asked him to bring me something home for when I was off. I was really looking forward to it because I've tried other fettuccine in town and was excited to try theirs. Honestly it was such a huge let down. My boyfriend added prawns in it but they were overcooked and the whole pasta was the worst I've had in town. Olive gardens is better. I looked on the menu before ordering and says it comes with tomato there was no tomato in it and instead replaced with carrots. What kind of substitution is that? The carrots overpowered the whole flavor of the dish. I picked the carrots out because how terrible it was. I like carrots but not in this pasta. The pasta wasnt anything like it said on the menu online. No thyme no good flavor in it and the satisfaction you usually get from eating a good fettuccine was simply not there. If I hadn't gotten off so late I wouldnt have eaten it. Ever get the feeling like you want to run back to the chef and give him a high five? Well that's how I felt while dining here at Bentley's Grill. As Salem is an early town, meaning everything shuts down around 5pm to 6pm, especially restaurants on Sundays, (some aren't even open then), our options for dinner were somewhat limited. After wine-tasting all afternoon, we opted for the restaurant inside the Grand Hotel, rather than having to drive to the next two or three towns over and possibly get thrown in some sort of version of Oregon's drunk tank. I was less than thrilled about going to the "hotel restaurant", as it has been far too many occasions that the restaurant was sub par to anything else even remotely good, nearby. We took the plunge and wound up getting way more than we both could have ever bargained for. Starting out with lowered expectations, always leaves tons of room for the staff, food and ambiance to impress you beyond your wildest dreams, and that's just what we did. As soon as we walked in, the high ceilings and dimly lit, chic atmosphere was already a step in the right direction. We were greeted kindly and quickly by the hostess and taken to one of their dining rooms. Our black shiny, leather cladded booth was within a few feet of a great big fire pit enhanced with a copper frame above and other various décor surrounding it. Bentley's has a masculine ambiance using bricks and stone, black granite table tops, and dark wood from floor moldings to ceiling frames, making it swanky and romantic. As we were seated and served by such a friendly and polite staff, immediately, Bentley's continued to impress. We ordered a few specials that weren't on their regular menu, one being their fresh peach salad, another their fresh catch of the day. The dishes were superb! As someone that has been spending more time in the kitchen (cooking) lately, I can recognize an amazing chef when I come across one! There was definitely more to these dishes than salt, pepper and butter. The glaze atop my fish special was amazing, unique and one-of-a-kind. Yum! Bentley's deserves way more credit than what's there so far, on yelp. They left quite the impression on us, even for being a "hotel restaurant" in the little ol' town of Salem. read more

I feel a tinsy bit embarrassed for people who rate this place as one of the best restaurants in Salem. They have obviously not experienced some of the amazing, locally owned, places in and around downtown core. This place wouldn't come to my mind if I were choosing somewhere for a nice sit-down dinner. Its not that the food isn't good, because it tastes fine. Its just not a knock your socks off kind of place. It really reminds be of a Shari's Restaurant, but fancier. Or maybe the Cheesecake Factory, minus the cheesecake. The food doesn't come with any sort of "wow" factor as some reivews suggest. I have come once by choice after they opened and have followed with several work re-lated lunches and even a happy hour or two with friends. (The happy hour is not bad at all). So please Salem-ites, stop suggesting this place is the best place to eat in Salem and try checking out the dozens of other options we have here. Support and eat locally. read more

Yelp says it best in their explanation of two stars: meh. It is sad to think that a lot of people say this is the best that Salem has to offer. Salem is just not much of a foodie town. We came on a Sunday night. The first wine we selected from the list turned out not to be anywhere in the cellar. Our first selection from the appetizer menu was also all gone. Goat cheese? Would have been lovely with the wine we were drinking. It looked like they had a good selection of wines by the bottle, although it is hard to say for sure since they were unable to produce 50% of the wines we asked for. My NY strip steak was not very flavorful. It was tender. But I have had a tastier steak from Denny's. The menu claims the steak is cooked over an open flame. I think they have conclusively proven that is no way to cook a steak. They also smothered it in some kind of sauce with mushrooms. That should have been a clue to me not to order the steak, because a good steak doesn't need any blasted sauce. It's not as if the sauce was good . . . it tasted like catsup with sugar in it. It wasn't downright nasty. I mean, I ate it. My wife's steak was the filet. It was much better - thicker, and somewhat seared on the outside. Very, very tender. Now, the filet, in my opinion, is not the most flavorful cut. But still, you can get a lot of flavor out of it by cutting it thick and searing the hell out of it on 700 degree cast iron. The menu claimed this steak was seared. It was certainly more seared than the strip. But for $30, I shouldn't be able to cook a better steak at home. Why can no one cook steak anymore? Is it so hard to google the words "how to cook a steak"? Does no one care? The appetizer menu, other than the thing they didn't have, reminded me of Applebees. This is not a restaurant that caters to a refined palate. If you have too much money and not enough taste, come here. If you have too much taste and not enough money, go to Willamette Noodle Company. If you have an abundance of both, drive to Portland or McMinville. read more

With all the other choices around it, this is not the place you want to go. I have been a few times and some days have been better than others, but I have never been impressed with their entrees. We went there because we had a gift card and I tried the salmon off their specials menu. It was completely raw and the cous cous under it was drowning in oil. The waitress said it was the "sauce" but the base was definitely olive oil and made the whole plate soupy (and tasted just like olive oil). My husband ordered the chicken fettuccini and I likened it to a frozen TV dinner quality with flavorless rubbery chicken and reheated runny sauce. Broccoli in the fettuccini is clearly of the frozen variety. It's too bad that the nicest hotel in Salem has a low quality restaurant. I attribute the lack of quality ingredients to it being overly large to accommodate hotel guests. Lucky for hotel guests, they are in walking distance to far better restaurants. Dropped by here after a meeting for a quick lunch before driving back to Portland. The restaurant itself is immensely spacious; which is great for big groups. Parking is great because there is a free lot behind the restaurant as well. As far as the food goes, I decided to order the seafood soup which was pretty tasty. For appetizer I had the chicken quesadilla. I thought the cheese was a little too gooey, but there was plenty of chicken inside. For my entree, I decided to have the pepperoni, salami pizza. Size was more than enough for one person; therefore, I could only eat 2 slices. Although it was pretty good, my cheese and toppings fell off my pizza, leaving me sad. I was sort of disappointed with the food at Bentley's. I think the atmosphere is nice, one of the nicer in town. The bar is great, drinks are good, and the decor is inviting and upscale. But once we got our meals, I felt like it was just lackluster, at best. It tasted like their goal was to jam out as many meals as possible, rather than creating tasty food. Ok....I had a hard time deciding on giving this place 3 or 4 stars. I had very high expectations of this place. I spent two weeks in the Grand Salem Hotel and this restaurant was supposed to be the best in Salem. I thought great, I will be here quite often....I ate here three times and would only order steak again if I went back. The pizza was horrible (margarita pizza had to be some of the least flavorful I have ever tasted. The Soup and Pasta was meh. Again not much flavor. Soup was a hodgepodge of leftovers it seemed. The steak was cooked medium/well and I ordered it medium/rare, but it was still pretty decent. Sides were ok. So after all the hype, needless to say I was disappointed with this place. If it wasn't attached to my hotel, I wouldn't have eaten here more than once in a trip. I didn't partake in drinking at the bar, but it did look like they had a nice selection of wines and beer. Few of the table ordered desert drinks (Spanish coffee- 151, Triple Sec, Kahlua) looked good. read more

Six of us went here for dinner on weeknight and I was absolutely astonished how wonderful everything was. From the employees, to the atmosphere, to the wine selection to the quality of the food. We were seated next to the large fire pit in the middle of the room on a dark and rainy evening in February. I was chilled to the bone prior to entering the restaurant and the fire was a very nice way to begin my experience. Our server was outstanding and attentive without being hovering. Our initial drink was just a hair on the slow side but after that, they had their A-Game on. I'll blame the bar for the first round slowness =] She pointed out a number of local Pinot Noir bottles of wine and we selected two and they were both delicious. For appetizers we chose the pot stickers along with an order of Crab dip/bread. The bread was outstanding and very delicious when the dip was applied to it. I loved the pot stickers also. They had some sort of dark sauce lightly poured over the top of them. Outstanding. Finally, I perused the menu pretty thoroughly and ended up going with the NY Steak. It was a tad on the high side so I was worried it would be astronomically large. With the high expense of the meal, I was also secretly hoping I was in for a treat. Both wishes were granted. Not only was is not one of those gigantic monstrosities (I'd guess 7 oz) and perfect in size, but it had perfect marbling, a nice crust, and cooked to a perfect medium rare (the way all steak SHOULD be cooked). Served at a 30 degree angle, resting on a serving of garlic mashed, I was in pure heaven. One of the best steaks I've ever had. I agree with past reviewers on the following points: - Staff is friendly, accommodating and efficient - Decor is warm, inviting and definitely one of the nicest in Salem - Parking under the hotel is fabulous, especially if you go during the day because the parking nazi's in Salem are out to get you. - Food is over-priced for Salem. Yes, it's a nicer restaurant, but let's face it... it's not 'fancy' and you are after all, in Salem. So here are my thoughts: This is definitely a great place for groups, going solo, or with a friend. With the bar looming in the back I see this as more of an adult venue but kids would be welcomed. I have never had to wait to be seated and the staff is very attentive, even with large groups. Their menu is small (in my opinion) and leaves a little to be desired, but they do have a few great dishes: The butternut squash, gorgonzola raviolli are to DIE for... so full of flavor and tasty. The pulled pork sandwich is also very good. I haven't had it, but everyone raves about the Portobello Mushroom burger, so if you're a mushroom fan... have at it. Drinks are expensive, but good. They make an excellent Washington Apple. I have not been for happy hour, nor was I aware of one until I read the reviews but I plan on checking it out. Bentley's always does a Mother's Day brunch thing which I think is cute. I would recommend Bentley's to someone staying at the hotel or in for a conference. I would recommend Bentley's to a fellow Salemite looking for a nice dinner out on the town. I would not go so far as to recommend that is is worth driving from Portland to check out, but it's pretty good for Salem. Having eaten here a few times before for lunch and enjoyed their salads, I thought I would try it for dinner with a friend. I was looking forward to a nice setting, comfortable booth, good service and a delicious meal. Well ... I got everything except the delicious meal. I ordered the Fettucine Alfredo with chicken ... gee, the chef could have gone to the grocery store and gotten one of those packaged alfredo sauces and it would have had more taste and been thicker. Really. Plus the chicken was tough and overcooked. I love a good alfredo ... and this wasn't it. But compliments to the attentive service and nice environment. Well we've been here a few times and we've always been happy with our food. The latest time we started with the baked goat cheese in romesco sauce appetizer, it was delicious! My husband had the lamb chop special, and I had the snapper on lemon risotto. We both really enjoyed our dinners. The service was top notch also, our waiter was very friendly and prompt. Wish I had remembered her name, I think she was British. There are a few restaurants in town that are better and have more "foodie" menus but Bentley's is a solid choice in Salem for fine dining and good food! read more

When we walked into the restaurant there was a host/hostess desk but no one standing there and there wasn't a sign to let us know to seat ourselves or wait to be seated so we stood there for a minute before my husband waved to someone to ask what we were suppose to do. It seems the hostess was seating another party but a sign at the desk would've kept us from wondering. The service was excellent... Our server was Amber and she was friendly and knowledgeable with the menu. My husband ordered the Bentley burger and he ordered it med-rare and it came out exactly the way he wanted it with a plate full of fries. The fries were hot and crunchy and I was lucky he was willing to share. I ordered the Fungi pizza with arugula and it was really good if you like thin crust pizza which I do. I had a business trip out here and this was a great place to end the day. The menu is much more diverse than I was expecting and the Craftsman-esque architecture was a nice touch. I was in Salem for work last week and stayed at the Grand Hotel. The first night I was tired and decided to try out the grill that was downstairs. First of all the service was nice. The hostess was very friendly and brought my soda early so that they could refill it to take to my room. That first night I ordered the Bentley's burger with fries. I asked for medium rare but she said they only cook it one way. I was a little worried about that but it came out juicy, tasty and the right amount of pink. The fries were just ok but the price point was excellent. Night two in town and decided to try my luck again. The staff was still very friendly but this night I ordered the rockfish and the goat cheese. The rockfish was a little dry but the risotto and veggies were great. The goat cheese was so delish I ordered it the next night with my mac n cheese, seared ahi, and side of veggies. Mac was so so but again goat cheese and seared ahi were on point. Overall the restaurant was a great American grill with a nice bar area. Plenty of beer and wine to choose from and the food is decent. Classy Portland ambiance. Basic Salem food. Spendy Portland prices. Located on the first floor of the newish downtown hotel and near the State Capital, Bentley's physical space is well-designed. The modern central fireplace compliments a warm earth tone decor to make an inviting space that might be more at home in Portland's Pearl District than Salem's otherwise work-a-day downtown. The dinner menu here looked pretty pricey (between 15 and 20 dollars) but you can find good deals at Bentley's during the 4:00-6:00 happy hour. Mondays tend to be the best deals, with a rotating drink special ($4.00) and a small appetizer menu. I ordered the hummus plate ($4.00) which was kind of a disappointment. One ice cream scoop of super garlicky hummus and one apparently store-bought pita sliced into wedges. For four dollars, I know, what do you expect? Still, the plate left much to be desired. The wait staff was very helpful, printing out separate checks without even being asked, so I give them props for service. And if I needed to conduct a lunch meeting, I might choose this place. Went with a LARGE group and really enjoyed myself here. The atmosphere is upscale and elegant without being pretentious. The food was nothing to complain about but it wasn't necessarily memorable either. The drinks were delicious and very well-made. What stood out the most to me was the waitstaff. We were in a very large group that continued to grow. Not once did our main waiter lose his cool. He smiled, was attentive, got help when he needed it, was adaptable to our ever-growing group & always had suggestions for each new arrival. It was such a good evening that we decided to go again the second night just to make sure we had a repeat experience - and it was just as good the second night! Night 1: The first night we shared a Bentley's House Salad for appetizer - for a salad it was fantastic, especially the way they sauté the onions before placing them on the salad and the house special dressing was amazing. My wife had their Chicken Fettuccine which she ended up sharing with our daughter because it was so delicious Myself I had the Free Range Chicken with sautéed medley of farmed and foraged mushrooms - A-Mazing! Our 7 y/o daughter has the Childrens Spaghetti and for a "plain" childrens spaghetti sauce it had some great flavors, she devoured it. Night 2: The second night appetizer we shared a bowl of the Northwest Seafood Chowder - this is definitely a must try - our daughter says this is now her favorite "soup". Both my wife and I had the Black Angus New York Steak with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables - again an A-MAZING dish! Phenomenal!! And this time our daughter had chicken strips - fresh, grilled and great batter on outside And finally, both evenings we enjoyed their "Grand" Margarita, grand, very grand! Needless to say, both evenings were spectacular; seating was immediate, ambiance great for ANY occasion, and the staff was extra friendly and provided great service even when things got to be a bit busy. Incredible. Awesome. Service here is always superb. We have the enjoyment and blessing if various food allergies, and they have ALWAYS been generously accommodating. The atmosphere is great for small meetings; we visit frequently for business meals, friends getting together or even a romantic night out. I personally enjoy sitting by the firepit for ambience. I have enjoyed most of the entrees and had enjoyed the all. After navigating across the dessert menu I have decided the creme brûlée is the only real option. While delicious, the other offerings tend to be a bit dry and non satisfying. When I end up in Salem, I can't think of a better place to dine! read more

I was in town for a business trip and I was driving around looking or a place to eat. I was driving by and it looked promising. I sat at the bar since I was alone and even though it was full got service right away. I was told that Wednesday night was ladies night and given a menu of $4 drinks and appetizers. I ordered the Pomegranate Cosmo and it was great! I ended up ordering their crab cakes and they were amazing! They were mostly crab and didn't have a lot of filler. They were perfectly crisp on the outside without being burnt but warm all the way through. Since this dinner was on the company I decided to get dessert. Their cheesecake was great! They berry compote on top was just perfect...not to sweet. I will definitely be coming back when I am in town! read more

Had I not been with a group, I would have sent it back. The bed of noodles it was on was quite good. I had big expectations for Bentley's as I truly lived my first visit a couple years ago. I ordered a light lunch (Caesar's salad and a bowl of clam chowder) it was nothing spectacular. I've had better salad at Applebee's. I ordered light because I had every intention of ordering dessert as it was my birthday, yet I was not offered anything other than my check, which was offered midway through my salad. My server did always make sure my glass was filled, yet I come from a background in customer service so it was not great not terrible. Located inside the grand hotel in Salem. Bently's has some very tasty food with generous portions. Last night my wife tried their Mai tai and it was really strong. So good value there. It's should really be about 3.5 stars, but I rounded up since it has pretty good prices and it's probably one of the better restaurants in Salem. As much as I like coming home to visit family, the food options in a small town like Salem always leave me wondering if it's worth the 45 minute drive north to find better places to eat in Portland instead. But a couple of restaurants like Bently's are starting to give me a reason to be lazy and have dinner nearby. They also have a very good sized bar here, and they serve the full menu in the bar, so if it's busy in the restaurant, rather than waiting you can check the bar to see if there's a open table, and seat yourself right away. read more

Overall a very good dining experience. All of our dinners were superb from presentation to portion size to wonderful combinations of flavor. The large open space provided a very nice ambience and the fireplace in the center was a nice touch. We started with the mixed green salad with caramelized onions, hazelnuts and seared pears. It had some nice flavoring but is basically just a salad lacking any real pizzazz. Somewhat disappointed with the salad I starting having my doubts as we waited for our main course. All doubts were immediately erased. Our meals were absolutely wonderful. The steelhead was fantastic and the delicate bed of corn pancakes it rested on was an awesome combination. Even the vegetables were cooked perfectly (why is this so hard for so many places?) The ravioli dish was also divine. You could immediately identify the freshness of the pasta and the ingredients. I think my only real beef with Bentley's is truly the wine I ordered. We got a so so Chalk Hill Chardonnay which was fine but in came to the table ice cold. I don't mean chilled I mean ice frickin cold. We had to let it sit for quite some time before you could even taste the flavor through the chill. Overall a romantic (kinda) dining establishment in Salem (probably the only one!) and actually a very good dining experience for the price. read more

Best dinner I've had in a Salem restaurant. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. My first time here I didn't have time to make one and we had to wait about 45 minutes for a table to open up. In the meantime we sat at the bar and had some fabulous drinks and talked to their wonderful somm. The somm, bartenders, hostess, and our server were are very friendly and knowledgable. The salads, entrees, and desserts were all delicious. The giant fire pit and comfortable seating make for a nice romantic, intimate, and cozy atmosphere.
