I was excited to give this a try but was very disappointed. The service was awful the lady was rude when I asked for the optional add on for a sushi roll and she looked at me crazy. I just told her it's in your menu and she never said anything back okay dokie. When I got my order it just was lack luster. I feel I could have gotten better at a store. Good stuff. B's cousins recommended this place and so we all decided to give it a try. I love the ambiance of Bento, it's super laid back and there is plenty of seating. The cashier was very friendly, patient, and helpful. Condiments, drinks, etc. are within reach. Restrooms are in the back and clean. They offer sushi, hibachi, salads, and house specials. Our food came out in no time and the cashier even brought us over a complimentary starter. That was so kind and generous of him, thank you! Their sushi is on point. We enjoyed their hibachi as well, they are generous with the portions. I appreciate the reasonable prices too. If you're in the Portland area, this is a great neighborhood restaurant. read more

Grabbed some sushi and spring rolls for take out recently. As most would say, it's pretty good for a small town Asian restaurant. Had a Crab Crunch roll, Spicy Tuna Crunch roll, Spicy Snow Crab roll, and an order of Spring rolls. The spring rolls were some of the BEST I've ever had! They were larger than what you get normally-and crispy! Really good. The sushi was all well prepared and the taste was fresh. Good sized portion too. The "spicy" rolls could have a bit more spicy...just personnel taste I suppose. Be sure to grab chopsticks and sauce packets on your way out-they didn't put any in the bag-so I had to use a fork to eat the sushi. The woman who answered the phone was very hard to understand--could tell she was wearing a mask :/ She was wearing it when I arrived and wasn't very nice when I picked up my order either. This would have to be one of my least favorite sushi joints I've ever been to lol. It's not terrible, it's just not great. We waited almost an hour for our food and the chicken hibachi was definitely just mediocre at best. The sushi was flavorful and seemed to be fresher than I was expecting. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant was less than desirable. The floors in some spots looked like they hadn't been touched in weeks. The girl that took our order was not helpful at all lol. I asked her a question about the menu and she shrugged her shoulders and said "I don't know". Ok lol. She won't win a customer service award anytime soon, she did apologize for my wait which was surprising lol. It was pretty steady with customers tho so it must've just been a mishap on our part possibly? read more

On business and wanted something besides fast food which seems majority of what Portland has to offer. One might pass on when riding by based on appearances (which I did) but the reviews had me throw all risk to the wind (it is sushi and normally play it safe to what and where I know!) Food was served to me in take out styrofoam (not sure what's up with that), but it was easy to pack and go any leftovers! The Snow Crab Roll was good. The salad was fresh with minced tuna (?) in the ginger dressing. The serving of Hibachi Chicken was very plentiful. The chicken was diced, which was different, but it did make it easy to eat. I loved the veggies on the side. Overall satisfied and definitely not hungry when I left. I recommend for the value and taste. read more

While it doesn't look like much from the outside like everyone I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place is once walking in. Seating and atmosphere may be basic but this place has what counts-- high quality food for dine in or take out. The hibachi chicken and steak are excellent, the rice is perfect and the sushi is the real deal. The sauce is good too. I highly recommend the snow crab sushi roll, hibachi steak and the chicken sticks. There are several things including the pad Thai I need to try in the future. read more

Chicken on a stick and hibatchi grilled chicken and shrimp with a splash of yum- yum sauce. I've been several times and thought I had already reviewed them. If you're a "hole-in-the-wall" diner who enjoys finding the local gems then you'll love this place. The clank of the spatula on the grill assures you that they aren't just sitting around. (perhaps they have fooled me they just sit there and hit the grill) It's nothing fancy but the food is great. The proprietor is always friendly and fast. They have a tremendous carry-out business. We're not fans of Chinese or buffets so this place is our go-to for local Asian fare. read more

I am in Portland once in a blue moon but I almost always end up here for the snow crab roll. It's the only place I can find it. If you get your order to go make sure you remember your chop sticks cause they don't usually pack them for you and I always forget. The place is clean and they are fast. I've never been when they are too busy. read more

My family and I had lunch at the new Portland restaurant, Bento Japanese Express, for the first time early April 2012. They've recently opened to large crowds most every lunch and dinner. It seems this town has been waiting for high quality Japanese like one would normally only find in the large metro areas of the country. I heard the head chef has expertise with Thai food, so I ordered the Pad Thai Chicken. Great choice! The noodles were nice and tender with chunks of white chicken cooked with a delicious ground peanut in tamarind-based sauce. I noticed a wide variety of sushi, so I ordered the ever-popular Philadelphia Roll. It was very fresh and delectable. There is so much more I want to try off their very extensive menu. The atmosphere is nice, though I do wish the kitchen area was visible so you could see the chefs in action. Otherwise, there is ample room for larger parties. The dining room is clean and bright with a fireplace in the back room. The prices for all the menu items are very reasonable and the value for what you receive is excellent. My understanding is that two brothers, with a good amount of restaurant experience, from Atlanta own and operate the restaurant. Our first experience here blew us away. We even received a surprise sushi roll with shrimp, lobster and eel sauce during our meal, as a way for the owners to say "thank you for dining with us". How often does that ever happen? Have been here three times and enjoyed everything we have had. The sushi is fresh, but the cuts of sea food in them are on the small side. Ask for the fried dumplings as an appetizer...very good. We are some major sushi lovers on our way home to Michigan... decided to go a little way off the highway for dinner and SO glad we did! Were a little confused when we first pulled up, but don't let that fool you. The inside is clean and nicely laid out. And the food... there are no words! After we placed our order we were brought out complimentary chicken sticks with an AMAZING sauce. Then shortly after our order that was filled with some of the best sushi we've ever had! Along with an order of grilled shrimp that was also delicious. We will definitely be making this a regular stop! And if you love Sushi, get the Snow crab!
