I tried one of the epic Berger cookies this weekend for the first time - having been in Baltimore at least 10 times prior, and to Lexington another handful, it only seemed right. I could've eaten the thick, fudge topping with a spoon if they sold bowls of it, and the cookie was not too dense, but stood up to the chocolatey challenge on top of it. They have so many other offerings too - I was very tempted - but the BF isn't a sweets guy, so he helps supress my diabetic-prone tendencies. The cookies are great! I recommend the chocolate topped-really the same as the famous one but the chocolate looks nicer and dried just enough to give make it a little more delicate. The butter crunch cookies are my favorite of the smaller cookie varieties. The chocolate covered doughnuts are the best chocolate covered doughnuts, maybe in the world. read more

Saw this place on Travel Channel and knew that I had to stop by for their famous Berger's cookies when I was traveling to Baltimore. Located inside the Lexington Market, it's easy to overlook this stand since there are so many other food stalls around, but I was on a mission to get some before leaving! Unlike most bakeries I've been to, they charge by weight instead of by cookie: 1 lb=$5.99, 1/2 lb=$2.99, 1/4 lb=$1.50 (1/4 lb is about 2 cookies). I think it's smart on their part because the cookie itself isn't that big, but it's really hefty. It's half cookie, half chocolate frosting so if you like chocolate, you'll love them. They're a tad bit too sweet for my taste, but I wouldn't mind getting a 1/4 lb for dessert if I'm there. They also have pre-packaged 1 lb boxes of cookies, which are really great if you're planning to transport some home! Everyone's heard of a black and white cookie but how many have heard of a Berger cookie? Berger Cookies are a cultural icon in Baltimore and they are sold at DeBaufre Bakeries throughout the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. Like the black and white cookie, the recipe for Berger cookies came from Germany. The cookie is a dense, vanilla flavored cake-like wafer that is similar to a shortbread but not as rich. The wafer is topped with a thick layer of sugary chocolate fudge. I finally decided to see what all the hype was about and dropped by the DeBaufre location at Lexington Market. Although the market was not very crowded that day, there were quite a few people clustered around the bakery stand-- most of them were obviously locals! They have pre-packaged options that are perfect for gift-giving and they also sell the cookies by the pound. The by-the-pound price was cheaper and perfect for me since I wanted to try one before committing to an entire box! I hate to say it but Berger cookies are not for me.. The cookie itself is very similar to the black and white cookie but a little denser and more cake-like. The chocolate fudge topping was way too sweet and totally overpowered cookie.. To be fair, I don't have much of a sweet tooth and I am the type of gal who scrapes off half the icing before eating a cupcake. The cookie itself tasted very fresh and was nice and moist. We stopped by here after we left Faidley's because there was a line & everything in the case looked scrumptious! We ordered the strawberry shortcake, Boston cream cake, red velvet cake, and a yellow cupcake w/ chocolate frosting. The strawberry shortcake was DELICIOUS, as was the cupcake! I didn't taste the Boston cream cake but my son and husband thoroughly enjoyed it! I asked the young woman behind the counter if the frosting on the red velvet cake was made w/ real cream cheese and she told me it was. Well, it was NOT! I make a good homemade red velvet cake and anyone who eats red velvet cake knows you have to make the frosting with cream cheese! Otherwise, don't bother making it! And it was a little dry where the other cakes were moist and yummy! So enjoy the cakes listed except the red velvet cake! The serving sizes are HUGE and the prices VERY reasonable. I paid $9.70 for all of the above when it would have cost twice that in Atlanta! Cake slices are usually around $5.50 in Atlanta but these are cake hunks! Very good & worth the money! read more

Okay Berger's cookies, great cakes, mediocre customer service. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon, so the entire Lexington Market was less crowded than usual. At Berger's Bakery, though, there were about 10-15 customers trying to get helped. I was being courteous and started standing behind what looked like the end of a line, waiting to get helped, only to find that two customers who arrived later than I (and stood behind me) got helped before I did because they yelled out their orders when one of the staff members became available. Okay, guess I will have to be aggressive to get what I want. When it was my turn, being a cake person, I got a slice each of the carrot cake, and butter pound cake; also got 1/4 lbs of their well-known Berger's cookies. I would like to echo some of the previous reviews - their signature cookies are so-so, not that impressive. The chocolate icing took up about 1/2 of the entire thing and tasted like store-bought factory-made icing. The cookie was frankly quite bland, a little pillowy and crumbly. Their cake slices were quite good though. The carrot cake itself was moist, substantial, full of spices and texture. The icing on top tasted home-made, just sweet and smooth enough to compliment the cake. The butter pound cake was also moist, fluffy, delicately sweet like a homemade pound cake. I will be back for their cakes and maybe their cookies other than the Berger's cookies. read more

A Berger cookie is a dense, cakey, vanilla (think soft, thick, 'Nilla wafer), cookie-base that is merely a vehicle for a half-inch thick dollop of sugary chocolate fudge frosting. The cookie-base itself is not too sweet, but the fudge will make your teeth ache and your dentist cringe. This place was completely hopping when I stopped by the market. I hear the doughnuts are the thing to get, but they were gone by the time I arrived. Sadness. I asked the woman behind the counter what the next best thing they made was. She recommended the Berger cookies. I bought two. Essentially, it was a soft sugar-type cookie covered in a thick, thick, did I say thick?, layer of chocolate icing. The icing wasn't even delicious. It tasted like any chocolate icing I would buy at the store. On the positive side, they were very friendly and affordable. Holy shit - I've been in the land of Krispy Kreme too long. Berger's donuts are the best. Absolutely the best - the sweetness of the Krispy Kreme without the greasiness. The fudgy icing on the chocolate is amazing. And there's just as many consistently tasty varieties as Dunkin Donuts - they even have pink frosted with sprinkles if that's how you roll. I love trying new fancy bakeries and they usually make pretty good stuff, however I still find myself wanting to go to Bergers. That is pretty much my main go to bakery place. If you want good cakes, cupcakes, and cookies: hands down amazing. I always get their cupcakes for my parties. They're super cheap too, the cupcakes are 3 for 1.25 which is mind blowing! Their cakes are ALWAYS moist and the icing is the perfect amount of sweetness that just melts in your mouth. The cookies are great too, I still have yet to try their vast selection though (trying not to get fat in the process). read more

Deeeeelicious! I was visiting Baltimore, and just had to come try this place out, given it's reputation. I ordered a couple chocolate drop cookies, as well as a few lace cookies. The chocolate drop cookies are shortbread/cake-like cookies with what looks to be a "drop' of chocolate icing on top...and by drop I mean at least 2 tbsps lol. They were so sweet and decadent. The chocolate frosting was scrumptious without being overpowering. I was upset that I only ordered two and didn't taste it until AFTER I had already left & paid the parking fee. :-( The lace cookies had a taste that I still can't quite place.(almond or coffee extract was used,maybe?) It was a crunchy cookie that appeared well, lacy, and was drizzled with chocolate. I wouldn't order those again, but they didn't taste bad. The chocolate drops however, I could eat everyday!..but I won't, considering that my waistline would be none too happy about it lol. Berger's is tasty and inexpensive! Win! read more

Making our way further into the market our next (and last) stop at the Market was Berger's, a nearly 175 year old family owned bakery known predominantly for their German Vanilla Wafer cookie topped with thick fudge. As opposed to trans-fat as I am, I figured I should give the cookie a taste given its longevity and fame - for $1.25 we received two of them. Tasting largely like a soft sugar cookie topped with a rich ganache of pure fudge there was certainly nothing wrong with the cookie - it was good, as good as a Black and White cookie minus the white can be, I guess - but for the gram of trans fat and 140 calories I'd sooner have eaten something else. Inquiring about their Red Velvet cake I was told it did not use Cream cheese frosting, but rather "sugar frosting," and as such I passed and we left the market for more quick bites around Baltimore. read more

I am really surprised at how much I loved these! I had heard all the hype from my students and I figured I would have one, but it wasn't on my list. After walking through Lexington Market, I spotted them for sale by the pound and we got 1/2 lb to share among 4 people. I think we each had about 1-2 cookies (7 total?) and it was the perfect dessert after splitting a crabcake. The fudge was creamy and the cookie was both soft and slightly crumbly. Located in the maze of food stalls that is Lexington Market, Berger's tends to have a small queue at most times, which can be a problem when newbies like me approach the line and don't know what I want. Their cookies as sold per weight rather than per cookie, a strange concept to me; so 1/4 lb of Berger Cookie or Chocolate Dip equates to 2 cookies, but 1/4 lb of the freshly baked cookies chocolate chip or snickerdoodle equates to 4 cookies. The Berger Cookie some look messy, but mighty tasty; the thick layer of chocolate cream with the soft cookie combine to provide the mouth feel of a brownie! The Chocolate Dip has less chocolate cream than the Berger Cookie, which can then feel drier overall (but I'm sure my dentist appreciates less sugar!). As mentioned before, there are usually other patrons waiting in line, so the service behind the counter isn't focused on being kind and friendly; they want to get the line moving read more

If I were on a desert island, a Berger cookie would be my first choice for companionship. I love the fudgy top ... it's just plopped down on the thick shortbread cookie like somebody just took a handful of topping and threw it on the cookie. Hint: to test for freshness, poke the top of the cookie. If it's soft, it's fresh. Some might like their fudgy top a little firmer, but not me. I've poked many a cookie top over the years. Thank goodness they now package two cookies together, because I could eat a whole box of 10 with no problem. I have given up all other sweets just so long as I can have my Berger cookie. I come here every time I go to Lexington Market. It's the only place that I can find Berger cookies that aren't prepackaged. They also offer a wide variety of other baked goods, like donuts, slices of cakes, and other variety of cookies. I'm a big fan of their donuts.
