When hubby asked for a pastrami sandwich, we knew just the place. It has to be Berg's. We ordered the classic Montreal pastrami sandwich, which was as delicious as the one we had in Montreal, Canada. For sides, I ordered their Classic Poutine, but hubby truly was curious about their Meat Poutine. Can't say "No" to him, so we ordered both and skipped the Reuben. The Classic Montreal Pastrami sandwich was very generously stacked with tender and lean meat, so I was glad I forgoed the Ruben. It fed us very well, as we did have two poutines with our order. The meat poutine was delicious, but too reminiscent of our sandwich. The standout for me, between the two poutines, was their Classic Poutine. Picture this: Every forkful delivers hand-cut fries, gooey cheese curd, and savory gravy all together in one glorious mouthwatering experience. Pair this with beer, and you are in Nirvana. We no longer have to cross the border to go to our wonderful neighbor, Montreal, Canada, for delicious sandwiches and poutine. Finding street parking was relatively easy. This is a take out place with some amazing pastrami, latkes, and hand cut fresh fries. The meat melted in your mouth. We joked that chewing is optional. I loved the classic smoked meat sandwich but the pastrami cheesesteak with onions and Cooper sharp was surprisingly good too. What sold me on going here was this: "We take a beef brisket, dry cure it with 12 different spices for 21 days, smoked over oak wood for 8 hours, steamed for 3 hours, & finally hand slice to order." Just discovered this little gem and the fact that they have matzah ball soup caught my eye. I am impressed with the quality! I got both a pint of soup and an order of smoked cauliflower and am very happy with both. The cauliflower had a great smoky taste and the sweet onion dip was excellent. And as far as thw soup, I'm impressed that they use dill weed in the matzah ball itself, something that I occasionally do when I make them but very few others do. wow! it was my first time I here and def not the last. the chicken schnitzel ceasar sandwich is absolutely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. the potato salad is also VERY good. It's a little on the expensive side, but it's worth it. the sandwich can easily be two meals. I want to update my review. If you like pastrami, this is the best pastrami sandwich I have ever had and I can't think of anything I would change. The rye bread is super fresh, soft in the middle with a chewy crust. The pastrami is tender and moist, but still had a firm enough texture to be a good chew. The cut is thick, much thicker than cold cit pastrami, if you hold up a slice it won't fall apart, but you can cut it with a fork with almost no effort . Zero gristle, zero inedible parts. Not too salty, delicious spice mixture. I order 50/50 fatty/lean and it's perfect - just enough fat to make the sandwich juicy, but not overly fatty. I can eat a whole small sandwich or one half of the larger size. I like the bite of the large sandwich. The mustard is bold but not overwhelming. The homemade coleslaw is not mayonnaise based, it's very slightly sweet- absolutely delicious on its own, but the perfect counterpart to the pastrami. The man behind the counter (who I assume is the owner as he's always there) is very nice, considerate and helpful. I even appreciate the paper bags he uses and how carefully he packs everything. His staff is just as nice. Now that it's summer there are tables outside with umbrellas, but I would characterize this as a takeout with seats. This is a great example of a place that would have a Michelin star, if they reviewed places like this. It's that good. If it were closer, I'd be in trouble. read more

Great pastrami in Belmar New Jersey who would have thought, not me but it's true. Berg's has pastrami like Katz's on Houston Street in Manhattan use to but now is a thing of the past but not at Bergs. They even have the right soda. The only thing missing is kinishes. The chicken soup was superb. So if you love pastrami like it is supposed to be get yourself to Berg's in Belmar. The only downside to the place is they are a takeout restaurant with a small counter you can eat at. So do like lots of people did in 1970's eat it the car for that authentic food Mecca experience plus your car will smell great for a couple of days. read more

So yummy! We drive over 45 minutes to get their pastrami poutine. Originally from Quebec, I will sometimes crave poutine and this place satisfies that craving. It's a new take on poutine, but the smoke meat is delicious. The fries are perfectly crispy with squeaky cheese curds, salty meat & gravy--chef's kiss. The dining area is small, and when it's hot there's no beating the heat but at-least there's some shade. Must say the staff aren't the most helpful, but that's okay. Overall the food shines through, and we will be returning for some more. I would say the best way to enjoy would be pick up and take home. read more

Wow. Hands down best Pastrami in the state. Taste and opinion is objective I realize. I love corned beef and pastrami, and saw this driving past in Belmar. Stopped in expected the same old deli sandwich. Same old prepackaged drek. Was I ever wrong. In my opinion this sandwhich is in the level of Katz deli in NYC, that good. I was shocked. Really. Top shelf. Better than Harolds by alot. A good smokey, classic taste, with the right amount of spice, not overpowering but really tasty. Poutine is like jersey disco fries, but arguably better. Soggy, even though we ate them right away, but thats to be expected. The gravy was a bit salty, so definitely drank a lot of water. I can not say enough good things about Bergs. We placed a catering order for 25 people this weekend, and our guests really enjoyed everything. Even with how busy they get during the parade weekend, they were super helpful, accommodating and everything was fresh, tasty and ready to go when we picked up. We had several sandwich trays, a tray of their amazing poutine (their homemade fries are the best!, somehow they stayed crispy for a long time even with all the yummy toppings), and their smoked wings! The pastrami and smoked turkey are always a hit and the corned beef made our St. Patty's party! From inside a small sandwich shop comes BIG smokehouse flavor. Had a side of the latkes; somewhat disappointed here as they were very dense and deep fried. Finished with two Dr. browns cream sodas, which is a good thing to have with a deli sandwich. Prices are fair, especially in these inflated times. The help was friendly. One negative comment, one of our party wanted their BLT sandwich and we were told they were out of bacon. I made my first few visits to Berg'sy, located at 15th & Main St. in Belmar, NJ. You owe it to yourself to give them a try. I haven't"t tried everything but their signature dish is pastrami. Hand sliced, choice of bread, with and without Russian dressing and Cole slaw. You can hit about 10 pizza joints in the area, but fresh pastrami is the ticket. We ordered take out: Smoked chile and a pastrami sandwich. The pastrami was excellent. I had the chile as my meal. It was flavorful, but very thin like soup or a very thin meat sauce that one might put over pasta with a few beans thrown in. To my taste, it didn't have the consistency of a good chile. There didn't seem to be much meat in it. Very disappointed. I will try this place again since we only sampled two items, but never the chile. I can't comment on the service or ambience as we had takeout. Why Yelp indicates I'm in San Francisco, I have no idea.
