I have reconsidered my negative review (see prior) and am now reversing gears. The fact is that the Berkeley Hearing Center was the only place that responded when I was referred by Stanford as a semi-emergency (I had Covid with a sudden hearing loss that required evaluation). The receptionist couldnt' have been nicer but the specialist that I saw was clearly taken aback when I informed her that I had active Covid; I really can't hold it against her that she terminated the appointment. I feel so torn about my rating because the people here are so kind. They're extremely responsive via phone and email and can get me on their schedule quickly. But the prices they charge are absolutely wild. I had a dome stuck in my ear and I couldn't get into a Kaiser urgent care. I was able to get an appointment here and they told me in advance it would be $30. That seemed a bit high for a one minute procedure but I was eager to get it out. After the dome was removed, the audiologist checked both ears. I have a lifelong problem with wax buildup so I was unsurprised to hear this. Not thinking, I asked if she could remove it. When I went to check out, they charged me TWO HUNDRED dollars for the wax removal!! Two. Hundred. I wish I had known before asking to get it removed or else I would have gotten it done at Kaiser for free. This is not the first time I've been shocked by Berkeley Hearing Center's extremely high prices. Their pricing is not listed anywhere on their website. read more

My ENT recommended this as a place to receive a hearing test. They were prompt and professional about following up when I made an inquiry. The front desk staff are very efficient and friendly. Thanks John for divulging my personal information on the internet for all to see regarding my hearing loss and how long I've had it. I did address it at the time with the audiologist and did not expect to pay for a 2 visit since he wasted half the appointment with inadequate faulty equipment. The management has changed since I brought my husband to Berkeley Hearing Center more than a decade ago. Now I am a patient, and my rating reflects cost, not quality of care. The tell-tale word "concierge" on the current website signals the high price noted by Christiana O. Several weeks ago, I went to have my hearing aids checked. The assistant found that one was defective, and he fixed it--he claimed--but the next day, the defect was back. He asked if I'd been told the charge and, when I said I had not, said it would be $110. When I gasped, he reduced the charge by 50%. I will take my business elsewhere. read more

I hate to leave a bad review but my experience today was not great at all and left me feeling pretty terrible. Please note that this is a review on my experience with Jonathan, not with the manager John or the other doctor in the center. TLDR; I only received 12-15 mins of wax removal service when I paid for 30 and many of those minutes were full of Johnathan leaving his office to grab his tools. Plus, with 4 minutes remaining, I was told that my session was over because his next client was here. It was only after that I informed Johnathan of my partner's experience at the center two weeks ago (he had both his ears cleaned with tools for almost the full 30 mins) that Johnathan cleaned my left ear in the remaining time I had (and paid for). In sum, although Johnathan is a nice/friendly person, this was a very disappointing and unpleasant experience overall. I wouldn't have minded paying $120 for my promised 30 mins of service but $120 for 12-15 mins of unprepared service (cleaning + leaving room to grab tools) was not worth my time or money. ------------------------------------------------------------------- My appointment was at 4pm and I arrived exactly at 4. When I walked in, the receptionist greeted me and kindly notified me that Johnathan would be with me in a few minutes. Around 4:03, Jonathan came to get me. Once in Jonathan's office, he asked me some questions about my ear and any discomfort I experienced in the past. After a few minutes of chatting, he told me that he would get me my paperwork only to realize that I had already filled them out beforehand. He then examined my ears and said he would get the necessary equipment to clean them out. He finally started irrigating my ears around 4:15-17pm (I know this exact time because I was texting my partner and the text receipt shows that my last communication with him was at that time). I was a bit worried about the timing given that we started at 4:15-17pm (session ends at 4:30pm) but suspected that he would simply end later. That was NOT the case. After irrigating both my ears, my right ear felt clogged (the same feeling when you get water in your ears). When I told Johnathan of this discomfort, he said I may just be more prone to having airplane ears. I was confused because my ears didn't feel clogged before he irrigated them, so I told him that it's probably the remaining water in my ear. Johnathan, then, left his office again to grab an air pump and unclogged my right ear. Afterwards, he informed me that I have some earwax on the walls of my right ear and AGAIN left his office to get the tools. When he came back, he cleaned out my right ear for a bit and told me that was the end of our session. This was when I told Johnathan that my partner received the same service here two weeks ago (from a different doctor) and that he had both his ears cleaned with the tools (vs. only my right ear) and that his doctor showed him his eardrums. To that, Johnathan told me that we simply don't have the time because his next client was here (this was 4:25-26pm and my session was scheduled to end at 4:30pm). When I pushed him to please clean out my left ear, he did that (forgoing showing me my eardrums) and that was the end of our session (ended exactly at 4:30pm). In sum, I feel very disappointed in this experience because my partner truly enjoyed and received his full ear wax removal experience with the other doctor in the center. Please don't waste your $120 on 12-15 mins of unprepared service and go elsewhere or to a different doctor. read more

Gabriel discussed my results and made useful recommendations about how hearing aids might be useful to me. He discussed the difference between the hearing aids they offer versus OTC hearing aids. I had a very good experience with Jessa, my audiologist. She spent quite a bit of time explaining hearing loss to me, and the different ways it can affect one's life. She also spent time adjusting my hearing aids and getting them just right. Hearing aids are complicated, and so is our hearing. I wasn't completely happy with my first set of hearing aids ever, but when I went in for a checkup, Jessa corrected all of the issues I was having. I now look forward to putting in my aids every day, and everything sounds normal to me. She is a wizard at this, and I cannot recommend her more highly. Great service, awesome staff. I've been meaning to get my ears checked by an ENT for the last week, but couldn't get a hold of anyone nearby campus. My hearing had been muffled and I figured I might just need an ear cleaning, so I did a quick google search and called the Berkeley Hearing Center instead. I was able to get an appointment for the very next day. During the visit, Jessa was very informative and made me feel very comfortable, especially since it was my first time doing the procedure. Got my first hearing aids here at a mid-level price and was very happy. After half a dozen years I moved up to high-end aids, and was even happier. Any aids will let you hear things that were lost, but the higher-end aids provide a fuller spectrum. I'd advise anyone to go as high as you reasonably can. But here's the thing - the aids need an audiologist to get the most out of whatever you choose. Good aids without personalized adjustment won't give you all you could have, and that's where BHC comes in. Jonathan and his crew take the time to microtune everything over several visits to make you're hearing absolutely everything you can. You can get aids other places but you can't get their expertise. I just had a great visit here. I had lost part of a custom earplug that was made for me elsewhere and I made an appointment to get an entirely new set of earplugs, because I just assumed that it was the only solution. When I arrived and was greeted jovially by the audiologist and his staff, I told him that I had lost part of my earplug, and showed it to him so he could see what it looked like to make new ones. He said that I didn't need a new set, that what fell off was the filter, and that he could sell me just the filter and I wouldn't have to go through with getting a set of ear impressions and new earplugs. He sold me the filter and installed it, and because it was such a quick visit (less than 10 min) he didn't charge me for an office visit. AND they had good candy at the front desk :) A+ Highly recommend. read more

When asking around for hearing aids, my father-in-law gave rave reviews for Berkley hearing center. We'd gotten Costco hearing aids for my mom and they were awful. We paid more at Berkley Hearing... but in return, we got a much higher quality product and over the top service. Jonathan and his whole team (feel terrible that I don't remember office manager's name cuz he's also amazing) are outstanding. They are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, fair, and treat my mom- who has dementia - with so much respect. Cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

If I could give Hearing Center twenty stars, I would. Jonathan is as skilled and patient as he is kind and funny. I used to be in the category of people who didn't really wear their hearing aids, even though I needed them more badly than I admitted. But he worked with me for as long as it took for me to become completely committed to wearing them, and it's transformed my life to have comfortable, carefully adjusted aids. I met with Dr. Traylor for a hearing test and met with her 4 more times to properly fit and fine tuning my hearing aids and to answer all my many questions. I can now hear clearly without the fuss. I brought my mom here to have her ear wax removed. We tried an over the counter product from the drug store but it didn't work. It was easy to get an appointment and the staff were all professional and friendly. Dr. Jessa Traylor was fantastic! She explained the procedure clearly and showed us video of the inner ears. They use a machine that pumps warm water through the ear. It was quick & painless. And it worked! She even emailed before and after photos. I want to give a HUGE shout out to Jonathan at the Berkeley Hearing Center. I don't write reviews unless the treatment received is outstanding. Jonathan is kind, knowledgeable, patient, and is truly in this business to serve. He's a throwback in that way. Case in point: I had gone to him in April 2019 for a hearing test and evaluation, which I had assumed for different reasons was at no cost (partly because I had received a flier a year prior for a free hearing test). He spent a ton of time with me, answered all my questions, and worked through his lunch hour to accommodate me in the schedule. He overheard me mention to John the office manager after the appointment that I thought it was a complimentary session, so he stopped by and told me not to worry about payment then; he said they'd bill insurance first and let me know if there was a cost. I emailed him the next day with some embarrassment to let him know I was experiencing financial hardship and would not have gotten the hearing test portion of the consultation had I known it would be the $200 charge or whatever it was - I was stressed. Jonathan emailed back in a few hours, saying he was so sorry I'd been worried about the cost of the exam, that they'd bill insurance (of which I had none) and forgo any remaining balance, and to please not worry about it anymore going forward. And that he sincerely hopes my financial situation improves very soon. Not only was he taking on responsibility than was probably not his to assume (as I didn't think to clarify the situation going in) but he was considering my well-being over the cost of potential income, and he meant it. And I haven't even bought a hearing aid yet! That's the kind of guy he is - just plain decent, and he deserves the business because of that and because he is also very good at his work. read more

I went to their website and there is no email function. In short, I will not beg them to take my money or service my needs. They need a better business manager, and for sure a receptionist. My mom moved into the Berkeley area. Her hearing aids needed cleaning and I had to find a place to go. I'm so glad I chose Berkeley hearing center. John at the center was very professional and I thought he was going to sell me on a new pair or mention upgrading, but this is not that kind of place. He cleaned the hearing aids, placed new batteries and told me that my moms hearing aids were good, didn't need replacing. He then sat down and taught me how to extend the battery life by making sure the battery door is slightly opened when not using, allowing a few minutes after I take the sticker off the battery to let air enter the battery to fully charge it. Both things my mom didn't do. He gave me a great price. Just very honest and helpful, this place is 5 stars for sure. I don't know when you will read this but I heard they are moving from Channing way to San Pablo street in the future. You'll be glad you chose this center. read more
