They went bankrupt and took our very significant deposit a few weeks before they were scheduled to install our cabinets. Now I've heard that the founder has bought the assets out of bankruptcy and plans to reopen as a "new" business, leaving me and other people high and dry with very little recourse to get our deposit back (we are considered "unsecured creditors" according to bankruptcy law and are at the bottom of the table of creditors as it relates to repayment). If you see them reopen DO NOT do business with them. read more

Wow! Just WOW! We are in the initial planning stages of remodeling our kitchen and possibly front door. We are about two+ years out and given the nature of our House (An Eichler which I describe during my numerous reviews of lighting places) we need to do our diligence otherwise it will simply destroy the gestalt of the house. With these Mid Century Modern homes, changes can be problematic. As part of this diligence we took a trip out to Berkeley Mills. We were blown away. We have some nice pieces in our home but the design and quality of the furniture they are making made our stuff look like we raided an Ikea. Fritz spent time taking my wife around looking at kitchen options and Emerson and I spoke at length about front door options and a bit about the design and customization process. I was also treated to a tour of the huge shop where all of these custom pieces are made. The work is true artistry and the quality is undeniable. After 30 years, we finally redid our entire living and dining rooms. Every piece of furniture was removed. An interior designer helped select all new furnishings, but we couldn't find a dining room table we liked. Sorry. It doesn't matter how elegant or well-crafted the products are. The designer says she'll get back to you and then doesn't after one month. So what's the point of that? The message this sends is you should be so darn grateful to get their overpriced product that you'll do anything including waiting in silence forever to get it. Berkeley Mills was commissioned to build a replica of the solid rosewood barn doors from Rosewood House, as Rosewood House and its custom furniture service retired in 2015. During mercury retrograde, the doors were damaged from a motor vehicle accident hit and run. One of the problems faced after dealing with the emergency boardup was who and where can we find a replacement? When it comes to solid hardwood custom furniture in the Bay Area, who else can you really go to on a professional established level? Berkeley Mills. Price point - $10,000 for a pair of barn doors - was high, but within reason. Measurements on site and CAD design checked out. About a month for build, readiness was a week or two late on delivery eta, not a big deal. If you have timeline restraints, be sure to stay on top of the build. Berkeley Mills was also hired for installation which is where the value is as the squareness, precision fit and function were superbly executed by their talented craftsman. The communication and process between inquiry, design, and delivery, was clear and punctual. P.S. Please don't ever mention IKEA and Berkeley Mills in the same sentence - it reflects poorly on your understanding of what real hardwood legacy furniture is versus pressed glued epoxy veneer laminate college student disposable furniture. read more

He was incredibly knowledgable about the entire process, gave us some great pointers to look out for, had great feedback and really listened to our needs. It was great to get his point of view, I could tell he's a total pro at this! From there we discussed process and pricing. I've found it hard to get exact details and pricing from other companies, but he was open and upfront with budget exceptions, process, timeline, where they fit in, etc. It was so helpful to gain a better understanding of the details. What happened to this place? The sign outside is peeling, the kitchens in the showroom looked dirty and beat up and the salesperson ignored us (texting on his phone) when we came in. We're interested in getting locally made new cabinets for our kitchen but clearly they weren't interested enough in us to say hello or ask if we had questions. We own a 1930s mission style home in the Berkeley hills. Our challenge was decorating the breakfast nook off of the kitchen because it was small and functioned mostly as a pass through between kitchen and dining. We engaged Berkeley Mills to help us create and design a seating solution. Our decorator had suggested a "booth" or "banquette" due to space limitations, but I was concerned that a hard bench would not provide comfortable seating and cushions with pillows would slide around and end up on the floor... Or someone would be sitting in "the crack". The design team at Berkeley Mills created a built-in piece of custom furniture that more than exceeded our expectations. A custom walnut banquette with matching trestle table now beautifully fills our nook. The ergonomically correct design of the back and seat create a comfort I did not believe possible with a banquette - and the quality of the wood selected is unsurpassed. Simply gorgeous. The upholstery options were plentiful and we selected the perfect look for our space. We could not be more pleased. While the price of custom furniture is usually much higher than off the floor pieces, take a guided tour through Berkeley Mills workshop and be amazed. The furniture is lovely, but the people are the worst! The sales people change often. They are unorganized and they aren't even nice. My friends paid way too much for a bed there and had to fight with the owner at the end of the transaction. They nickle and dime their customers on everthing after you've already overpaid them for they made. . No fun. Not a good experience. I used to love it ... until I purchased something there and well, that will never happen again. There have to be good craftsmen out there with better service and attitudes. read more
