I have been taking my car 98 bmw M3 ragtop to Berkely Motor Works since 2004. The shop has a very knowledgeable staff when it comes to vehicle maintenance and the prices are extremely reasonable! I have known Mike for 10+ years as the mechanic of my mother's 1989 E30 325i and now as the mechanic for my E30 318is. He has always been incredibly knowledgable about BMW's (as well as other German makes such as Merecedes-Benz) and is always fair and honest about repairs and their costs. I've been going to Berkeley Motor Works for 6 years, since my car was a year old and I decided the "free" BMW service was not sufficient. Mike knows BMWs inside and out and he and his staff are friendly and helpful. If you want a ride to BART, they'll take you. If you need the car done by 3, they'll do it. It is so nice these days to talk to someone who knows cars and knows the work being done on your car, rather than someone who is two people removed from a mechanic. Mike is good at advising you of needed repairs and repairs that can wait. I've never had any problem with either work done on my car or on any bill. If I did, I'm sure Mike would address it. I went to Berkeley Motor Works to have my bmw diagnosed and fixed. I am normally not one to go to autoshop to get my car fixed, as everytime I go the bill is 5 times higher than I would have expected. But at Berkeley Motor Works, they almost instantly and accurately diagnosed the problem. Mike and John were the ones to look at my car. Because of the fast diagnosis and the fact that they carry parts in Stock, I was able to get my bmw in and out that same day. My total bill was actually under my budget. So I had my car in, in perfect working order close to 90k a twin turbo car, in time for a timing belt...took it to these guys...they blow up my engine, tried to charge me for 4k worth of service which was not needed as they unplug a few sensors in the engine bay that woulf have come up with needee repairs, all fake, all lies and mischief by the owner and the mechanic, after I took the car over to grifen motor werks next door, the owner if griffen really took care of me, for 250 bucks he fixed EVERYTHING berkeley motor works did to fake a problem in the car!!! Talk about a "Wow" experience! About 6 years ago I got a fix it ticket for not having a front license plate. I randomly stopped by Berkeley Motor Works and asked if they could help. To my surprise the owner Mike came out with a drill and put the plate on. I asked him how much and he said it was no charge. And this was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. At the time my car was still under warranty for a few more months, but I knew that as soon as it was up that I would be taking my 2006 525i to Mike at BMW. Since then BMW has done both major and minor work and each time that I have picked up my car it has always been returned to me in pristine condition, and running like new! I started going to Berkeley Motor Works because I was sick of paying the extreme prices at the Mercedes dealership. I was recently in a car accident and my insurance covered the external damage but my car did not drive the same after. My insurance would not listen to me. I brought it here and they were empathetic to my needs and took the time to fix the not so obvious problems that continued to frustrate me. A very accommodating and efficient shop. Such a GREAT bunch of mechanics!! My '02 MINI's clutch went out recently--the 2nd one in 2 years!! BMW did NOT replace the first one, but they replaced this one and when they weren't happy with the clutch they put in--they put in ANOTHER!! They would not release the car until they were satisfied with my MINI's performance! Who does that--BMW does!! They contacted me with updates throughout the procedure and they gave her a much needed check up. They took care of my sweet MINI as if it was one of their own cars! These guys have been honest, first and foremost. Top notch labor is not cheap (they work exclusively on bmw's, from street to track), and though I've been a bit on the fence about the bill my first time or two, I've sighed many more times for the fact that the repairs they did were perfectly executed. With time I've realized i actually saved significant amount of money, (many times over now) by the simple fact that they care, and tell you more about whats going on with your car (not just a diagnosis of what you came in for) than anyone I've gone in for a "check up" with. Mike was very thorough and went on a test drive with me through both city streets and the freeway to make sure he understood the problems. I left my Mercedes wagon there with full confidence and I wasn't disappointed! The big things and the little things were all taken care of to my expectations - dealer's "Service C," transmission, tire rotation, fluids and detailing. I was referred to Mike at Berkeley Motor Works by trusted auto mechanic shop ROB's last month and scheduled a check into the possible need of a tune up and some specific needs like information display module and brake lights. Mike was finished with an estimate half way through the day and let me know I did not need a tuneup, but the front brake rotors were worn. He also saved me 350 dollars by trying three times to find a used display module, which ultimately worked fine the third time (3rd x's a charm). The new replacement cost for the part was out of my budget range. In the end all the work I needed was completed under the estimate, and the brakes were so much better I had no idea they could be so nice, having bought the car used last year. Mike (The owner) is friendly, straight forward, and very fair. He was never rushed at the counter, listened to my questions, and gave me personal tips on how to take good care of my car for no charge. Frankly, I do not understand how anyone can be disappointed at this shop, unless you consider the source of the people who wrote the negative comments: calculating in McNuggets and such. read more

I only give it one star b/c i have to in order to write my review! If it had an option to rate negative stars then i would! Anyhow, I will never take my car to these greedy, money hungry people ever again. I was told by the person or persons at the front desk that I need this and that, a total repair of $2500! I understand that I drive a BMW and it is not a cheap car and I am not a cheap person but my car was just at a shop ( i will not disclose the name but they are very honest and goo people and will always have my business!) and I did my maintenance 2 and water pump and timing belt just to be proactive on it. All dealer parts ( i confirm that b/c i am not a big fan of aftermarket or parts that is not from the dealer!) To make a long story short, I was told by the people there at Berkeley Motor Works that I need repairs on my car that has already been done by the shop I go to all the time. Little did Berkeley Motor Works know that going to different shops are part of my job! I'm a critic what can I say!?! DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY!!! I have a 1998 BMW 3 series that I have always had serviced in San Francisco. I moved to the East Bay recently and looked for a reputable shop to service my old but very reliable car. Found Berkeley Motor Works and saw that they had good reviews (obviously didn't check Yelp). I had a very bad experience. I took the car in for a $130 oil service. They called and said they had found some other things wrong, some big, some small. I opted to do the small items, replace two filters and replace four hoses. They said that the additional work would be a few hundred dollars, but when I went to pick up the car the bill was $1019. They had charged an additional $890 for this very simple, limited work. They actually charged over $500 just for the labor on this additional work which probably would take a trained technician maybe an hour to do. All I can say is outrageous. I would be very carefuly about bringing your car here, and make sure you get hard copy estimates for whatever you're going to have done. On top of everything, when I wrote and complained, I did not even get so much as an email back either explaining, apologizing or offering an adjustement. read more

The owner, I believe his name is Mike, seems like a knowledgable enough guy about bimmers. Only took my car in there once, my brother another time - he was reasonable and allowed me to bring my own parts. Pricing was, as in all bmw shops I've ever seen, inflated, but nothing more jarring than the next. However, the receptionist can be nerve-rattling annoying, although mileage may vary on that one. I do most of the work on the car myself and was turned off on them when I came in for a transmission fluid exchange and they said my control arms were in dire need of replacement and quoted me thousands to fix. I put it up on a rack and although the bushings were worn enough to create a small amount of shimmy on the highway (tell-tale sign on bmws), there was no physical evidence of any immediate need of replacement. Even went to two other bimmer specialist and they said it was a-ok. My brother and I then replaced every suspension part months later and most parts were fine - we spent a few hundred dollars and got to work on the car. Bottom line, I *think* Mike knows what he is doing and is friendly - just make sure you do your own research as well. read more

First I would like to say that Mike and Paula are very professional. I brought my Mercedes Benz ML 320 there for a rattle after driving from L.A. on vacation. They diagnosed two problems and changed the fan clutch saying it was the more serious of the problems. The car was there from 10:15 until the next morning because the part came at 4:30. Since my car was taken apart, I had to leave it. They are poor communicators and should have told me up front to bring it back in the morning as I believe they knew the part would not be delivered in time. Then they said I could make it back to L.A. with a damaged catalytic converter. It went out near Patterson and we barely "limped" into that town and had to spend the night waiting for the part. I would not take my Mercedes there again as I think they are probably more reliable at repairing BMWs and developing a rapport with their customers that live in the area. read more
