This was by far the worst food I have had in 10 years. Every single item was absolutely tasteless, from the mushy flavorless noodles, to the mashed potatoes that tasted less than instant. Nothing had any seasonings, not even the stuffing. The chicken was just ok, but not great. Drink was not included, almost $3.00 for $.50 worth of soda and never got a refill. The desserts were made from cheap ingredients, not made with real butter and tasted worse than frozen grocery store desserts. We will never go back. We were in an Amish area and we thought we should eat at an Amish restaurant. This is the one that was recommended to is. It is a beautiful building and it's very clean. My husband ordered the buffet which is what they are known for. I ordered off of the menu. I was very disappointed with my food. I ordered turkey, stuffing, and cream corn. The turkey was so salty that I could only eat a few bites. The stuffing was bland. I only ate a few bites of that. The cream corn was good so I ate that. I told my server the issues with my dinner. He came to take my plate and it was 90% still covered in food. I thought he might offer me something else or to take the meal off of my bill but he didn't. Another Amish Country Tourist Trap Restaurant...except there aren't many Amish people working inside. Right inside the door there is a sign that says, "Bus drivers, you must bring at least 20 people in for the buffet to have your meal comped." So be prepared for long lines inside this serve yourself eatery. Basically this is one of the many buffets in the area serving the same thing--homestyle food such as fried chicken, mashed potatoes, salad, and of course apple butter and peanut butter honey spread for the rolls. The only difference between this restaurant and say Der Dutchman is that they have a few desserts on the bar for free where as Der Dutchman and others charge for the privilege of an after dinner sweet. Honestly I'm not a fan of these type of restaurants and I think they're overpriced when compared to say Hometown Buffet in Columbus. The food is bland, obviously made from bulk processed ingredients. I am not impressed. If you are visiting Amish country I would skip the mediocre Amish style restaurants (even Der Dutchman) and head to somewhere with local flavor such as the Berlin Hickory Smokehouse and have some ribs or pulled pork full of flavor at a similar price--and there you don't have to serve yourself! read more

Extremely similar to Der Dutchman but with a cleaner more upscale feel. The buffet was well stocked and had a wide variety of options. The staff is very friendly. They have a great menu selection as well if you don't feel like the buffet, and for dessert your choice of 25 pies! My mother and I have been frequenting this place over the past few years and have always enjoyed it, however the last few times we've gone have left something to be desired. The last couple of times I chalked up to flukes because we ended up waiting twenty minutes for a server to even visit our table once seated, then another hour plus for food. It was quite stressful both times. This recent visit proved that it's merely the establishment that has lost its ability to time manage. If it's even remotely busy, unless you order the buffet, you will be waiting close to an hour for your food, no matter what you order. Mom and I anticipated this and ordered what was thought would be simple - a trail and swiss sandwich for me (which I specified be served cold), and Mom got a bowl of soup with a piece of pie. It still took almost an hour and it wasn't even that busy (after 1pm). Then when our food finally arrived, my sandwich was brought hot, so I had to send it back (hot trail bologna tastes disgusting to me) and wait another five minutes for the correct one. It was upsetting for both of us to have to wait so long for extremely simple meals. That $8 slab of trail bologna with a slice of cheese on it in a bun was NOT worth an hour's wait. My husband and I stopped in and had dinner on Wednesday - WORST place we could have chosen for dinner. We have one here locally (Bellville) that is in the same corporate as this place but this was down right nasty. We both chose the buffett - first we had salad - that was very good, everything was fresh. THEN we moved on to the main course. The broasted chicken looked (and tasted) as if it had been sitting there all day - it was sooo dry :( The pan fried chicken was sitting in grease and/or juices but it had a strange taste (again - was it there all day?) The mashed potatoes and browned butter were the consistency of instant and the taste of instant - the only thing I found edible on the main portion was the creamed corn. Ohhh and let's end with the dessert part - tapioca that looked as if it had been there from the morning as were the other "pudding type" desserts. I grabbed one cookie, not sure of what it was - ended up having M&M's inside - that was dry. The oatmeal raisin were a tad dry by edible. We ended up going here because the smaller places on the main street had lines that stretched into the sidewalks. I'd pretty much given up on getting something interesting, and went for the big barn restaurant instead. The Farmstead had plenty of parking (not something easy to find on the main drag), and we were really, really hungry. I knew I was walking into a tourist joint, so I wasn't expecting any sort of an "Amish experience" in any way whatsoever. The wait to get in was about 30-minutes, which I didn't feel was too bad on a Columbus Day weekend at 1 PM. Our server was extraordinarily nice and cheerful. While watching the other servers, I could see that the helpful attitude was pretty common. I got up to take a look at the buffet, and decided it was pretty lame. I took a pass on it and went for the menu instead. My wife went right for the buffet. The menu was pretty much what I'd expected out of a place like this, and I chose the smoked sausage with sides of stuffing and mashed potato. While my wife was fine with her buffet meal, what I tasted off her plate really didn't thrill me. The sausage was nice and smokey with two large links. I was completely satisfied with my meal. It looked like most people in the place were going for the buffet, but my plate turned out to be better than the somewhat low expectations I had going in. I'm sure that if I'd gone to the buffet there'd be one less star above. Skip the buffet. Use the menu. Then skip the extremely touristy town and enjoy the surrounding countryside. read more

If you're a foodie, you are probably not going to be impressed with the menu here. But, it's part of the Amish country experience and you know you are getting comfort food instead of some fancy "deconstructed" amuse-bouche. I enjoyed that this place was clean, spacious so no wait despite the full parking lot, and various menu options. There were not many great vegetarian options so I went with an entree comprised of three sides. My sweet potato fries were tasty and not overly greasy. The creamed corn was ok, more liquid than I prefer. I should've known better than to get a side of veggies as they were not seasoned at all. I think I would've enjoyed the experience more if I would've embraced the starchiness. If you get the buffet, I think you'll get your money's worth as there is a variety of meat, starch, and salad items. My main advice would be to order what your heart desires, and not what you think your My Fitness Pal would recommend. Also, don't forget to snap a pic with the rooster out front! read more

While this place may have a great buffet, the carry out menu item that I ordered was the worst I have ever had anywhere. Was there on Friday evening-August 11th, 2023 at 6:00pm. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce/tomato on sourdough bread. The bread was so drenched in butter (at an attempt to toast the bread) that it was not edible! The chicken breast was just a breast that had been sliced in half and grilled. Did not have much flavor other than the butter that had soaked through the bread. It comes with one side but I decided to add another. I choose the Cole slaw and macaroni salad. They had way too much mayonnaise--appeared to be a ready made salad/slaw that you get from a restaurant supply house. If this was in house made, then time to train another person to make these items. As it was a take out, I was unaware of this until I returned to my hotel which was a little drive away. For $19.07(14.29 for the sandwich, 79 cent for added Swiss, and 3.99 for the extra side) the quality should have been better. Not a good value at all for this price--not good for even half the price at this quality!! Sorry Berlin Farmstead--my family will not be returning. Here is what each star stands for. First star: Great looking venue, second star: Attentive, polite wait staff, third star: cleanliness. These are common virtues in this part of Ohio. The only reason we waited in the long line was we kept hearing people say how much they liked this place. Our waitress was rude and short with us, maybe she has worked there way to long, she was put off by the fact that we didn't know what we wanted as soon as we sat down (our first and last time there).....One of the first tings I noticed as we were waiting in line was the way they refill the salad bar. They just put the new stuff right on top of what was already on each container, I have been in the food industry my whole life, it should always be FIFO, first in first out!!! The service was good, and the place was hopping with a bus tour stopping in on a Friday night. The facilities are well kept and clean - which is nice. We were in the Berlin area between Amish experiences at Heini's Cheese Chalet and Yoder's Amish farm and we wanted to stop for lunch. We were too far from my usual fave of The Amish Door so we opted for something I'd never tried. Per usual there was a buffet of broasted chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, various salads and desserts. The food looked really dried out and tastless. So instead I had the chicken noodle casserole with mashed potatoes. The stuffing in the casserole was burnt, the noodles were dry and stuck together and laid overtop was a slice of processed cheese, chicken gravy and peas. It tasted a little better than it looked, but not much. The mashed potatoes were heavenly and so were the homemade rolls. I think I'd take the extra time and go to the Amish Door next time. Since this restaurant is open on Sunday there aren't many actual Amish there. read more

As many other reviewers posted, the options on the buffet are limited. I'm originally from southcentral Pennsylvania, so I'm well-versed with both Amish cuisine and hospitality. I doubt the cooks are Amish either, but isn't that kind of par for the course when eating at a themed restaurant in a tourist area? I avoided the buffet, as there weren't enough options that appealed to me. I ordered the meatloaf and had sides of mashed potatoes & gravy and applesauce. Here's where ya lost me, Farmstead... The waitress brings my applesauce before my meal (weird, but whatever. Maybe she thought I wanted it as an app?) and I decide to have a taste while my dining companion hit the salad bar. This was absolutely, positively, definitely canned/pre-packaged/grocery store applesauce. I'm talking Motts. Seriously?! Color me disappointed. The meatloaf was tasty, tender, and moist. The mashed potatoes were your run of the mill variety (potentially from flakes, it was hard to tell) and the gravy was pretty standard. Overall the service was terrific, but I can't get past the average (at best) quality of the food. The prices are reasonable, but the fare isn't much better than your run of the mill family style chain. **Warning: be prepared to wait. A long time. We had roughly 7 parties in front of us, several of which had greater than 8 people waiting. Rather than take names, move to the next group, and seat as tables became available, they waited between EACH PARTY before even taking the names of the next customers. I was in a party of two and we waited behind all large groups, only to find that when it was our turn there was immediately a 2-top available. We stopped here for lunch yesterday and were very happy we did. I thought $15 was a lot for a buffet until I saw the offerings. So many choices, all of which high quality and delicious. If you're not super hungry youu can order off the menu. We had the Manhattan and it did not disappoint. Tender beef, homemade bread, flavorful gravy and a side of delicious mashed potatoes. Not wanting to give my kids an excuse to not eat theirs, I simply said it wasn't the best chicken I'd ever had. She didn't take my clue, I didn't want to discuss it, so she asked one too many questions, even asked if I tried using salt! ... As an over-salter, my wife had to laugh out loud at that suggestion. She was so close into my personal space examining my plate, with no signs of giving up, I literally had to say, no offense, but I'd like to finish my meal in peace! It was very odd. She forced me to accept a free dessert. Which was nice, but again, I'm not sure she would have left me alone if I said no thanks. We ate there last night . The service was a little slow, but not bad. I had the strawberry salad from the menu and it was quite good. My wife ordered the sirloin burger and it tasted so bad she couldn't eat it. She said the consistency of the meat was more like something with a lot of filler in it. I took a look at it and I agree. Being tired and not wanting to wait for a replacement meal my wife just told the waitress she wasn't very hungry and she wanted to take it home with us. When we got to our hotel I stuck it in the refrigerator planning on tasting it later to see if it was as bad as my wife said. I went in the fridge maybe 15 minutes later and the smell from the hamburger had caused the fridge to stink (and not like meat). I threw the whole thing out without tasting it. read more
