What a super, friendly, cozy restaurant! I'm a frequent visitor to Anchorage, and I have enjoyed at least 2 meals at Bernie's: one in the summer when their trees and plants were in leaf, and we could eat outside, and once when visiting right around Christmas time when we ate indoors around a cozy, round table. We all enjoyed excellent, tasty food; I especially liked the light lunch I had: an order of gyoza and a cup of tomato bisque soup. Yum! read more

Let's call it fusion - Dive Bar fused with Asian/Korean. There are burgers, nachos, kalbi, and cashew chicken. I saw a delicious looking pizza come out. Definitely interesting. The Gyoza come out with a scallions for color (and presentation?) and soy sauce in a plastic cup. They were good. Nothing special. Love it. My Orval Belgium beer came with a Belgium specific glass. Live music was folky and delightful. Excellent harmonica and bass. Our server Kyler was attentive, friendly, and answered all our questions. Prices were very reasonable (cheap even) for Alaska. Where have you been all my life?! I've lived near downtown for almost 6 months now, and I never knew about this place. I randomly wandered in the other day after a thrilling trip to the DMV. The tap selection is small, but focused. They had two solid IPA's on tap (Stone and Fresh Squeezed) so I was properly pacified. Wait staff was also very friendly. I bet this place gets pretty fun in the summer, there is a huge "front lawn" with a stage. I went in the winter, it was pretty mellow and chill...in a good way. This place feels distinctively local, homey, and welcoming. Something that not a lot of downtown bars exhibit. Will definitely be back, can't wait to see what it's like in the summer! read more

Food is alright. They charge Shirley temples as bar drinks, so no refills on them. So I got charged liked $10 for sprite refills basically. Every other restaurant is free refills. That's ridiculous. They must charge for every single soda also. read more

One of my favorite spots in downtown! They have a large patio area that's great for relaxing w a beer in the summer, and frequently delightful, live music. Their menu is also pretty extensive, diverse. and shockingly delicious -- way beyond and better than the typical bar food! My favorite is their Thai Basil Chicken dish - which comes very spicy, sprinkled with crunchy green beans and a hearty helping of rice. Their seafood soup is very hearty - enough as a meal all by itself. I also enjoy their Caesar (thick, creamy dressing!), pizza, and sushi rolls. No matter what you get, I promise it'll be amazing! The only downside is that it can get crowded and service slows. Definitely check it out though for a great, relaxing day/night out! read more

Amazing! The food was hands down the best food in Anchorage and the service was great. If you are a tourist or a local it is a great place to get some food, some drinks and learn about the history of the place for the history buffs out there. Bernie's has been my #1 choice on the downtown Anchorage bar scene for years. Why? Eclecticism. I like the crowd here more than the nightlife anywhere else in Anchorage because it's not too much of one thing or another. They also hit a home-run on sushi. This place is as good for a casual after-work beer (lots of IPAs on tap!) as it is for a late Friday or Saturday night on the dancefloor. I'm not sure what the DJ situation is (rotating or resident/house) but the music is always a decent mix of current and throwback jams. They've also got lasers too. I like lasers. I've always had delicious food here (the calamari never disappoints) whether its dinner or an appetizer to go with drinks. With the weather warming up, this past Friday night we came here to sit out in the courtyard when we found that 49th State Brewing's outdoor deck was too full. The view isn't as good (unless you count the Atwood building as scenery...) but it's a great little outdoor lounge for those warm summer evenings. read more

Bernie's was a very cool place. An expansive outdoor area comfortably sat around 60-70 people. They had a live band and plenty of heat lamps to keep patrons warm as it started to cool down. My only complaint were the restrooms. Far too small for the amount of people. There was only one stall for the male restroom. read more

Bernie's has really only one thing going for it. It is one of the few places in Anchorage with a nice open court yard. And I hate to be a geezer and recall the good 'ol days, but I think that when Bernie paved over the awesome yard back there and replaced the bocce ball area with cold stark modern patio, it marked the decline of Bernie's. Now it's an uber hipster hangout, which normally I wouldn't care because it's its own flavor, but the service is terrible! The last few times that I have been at Bernie's we ended up leaving before we could order anything because we sat around for 45 minutes and nobody even came to take our order. I love the outdoor patio! It's so relaxing to be able to sit out and enjoy a drink on a nice sunny day. Staff is always very attentive and friendly. Food is pretty decent too. My faves are the teriyaki steak and the salmon poke. Drinks are also pretty good here and priced just right. At night it does turn a bit ghetto. Something always goes down. But other than that, this is one of my fave to go spots for a night of drinking. :) read more

This is a review for lunch, not for drunken nights lol. I was pretty sketched out when I decided to have lunch here for the first time. Like, what would they be serving for lunch? Shots of patron? Beer? Not like I would be entirely opposed to a liquid lunch, but some times I need food! They do typical bar foods - burgers, wings, fries, soup, salad but surprise you with some ethnic options - curry steamed clams, kalbi short ribs, thai beef salad etc. With those assumptions being made I had lunch there, and have pretty much returned at least twice a week since. Its great! They have fast service, its a nice quiet spot to have lunch and their prices are reasonable. My favorite lunch time item is the Kalbi ribs ($13) its a huge portion, so if you have a small appetite you should share these. It comes with a pyramid of rice (it's adorable) and a generous portion of sauteed veggies. Its delicious! Other notably yummy lunch items are the thai basil chicken ($13). Flavors are great, and it has a nice level of spice to it. Only complaint is that it literally is just chicken, thai basil and onions, I feel like they could throw some veggies in there to make it a more balanced plate. Again, its a generous portion so come hungry. My lunch partners have ordered the burger ($13) which is GIGANTIC, like the type of burger you should probaby eat with a fork and a knife. Only complaint is that they're a little too generous with the red onions, unless you're into that kind of thing. Honestly, the only thing I would steer away from on their menu is their hot wings. Its disappointing how not hot they are. I'm a spicy fanatic, so Bernies please upgrade your wings! So, if you're ever looking for a new lunch spot, give Bernies a try. Its a whole new world during the day, honestly its weird to go to Bernies when they aren't blaring EDM and having to make my way through a bunch of drunkies, but is totally worth it. They even do sushi after 5pm, I have yet to experience that, but I will get to it one day. read more

As mentioned by other yelpers, this place is the spot to be at during the summer! It was packed when we went and lively unlike most of Anchorage​. Big area to hang out and meet people and from my short-term​ memory,I'm​m sure that the drinks were just as good as the times as shared here haha. Be wary though - crowds and people cause lines and drunk egotistical combined with lines is a recipe for disasater. I know that just about every weekend there is a fight in or around the area so be careful​ butI'm​m sure you will be as long as you aren't looking for trouble. Nothing happened​ to​ me. This little bar/dance club is super cute. The outdoor seating is large with heaters outside for those Alaskan chilly nights. They have a dance club upstairs but we didn't venture up to check it out.. we sat outside snuggled up together sitting on one of the benches. We had a lovely time together as I drank wine and my boyfriend drank beer. There was a band playing so we had to pay an entrance fee but still worth coming here to watch the local crew. read more

What a great little bar. Slightly hidden down the street from the mall, this place is awesome! A great selection of beer. The food....INCREDIBLE! Don't call it bar food, it's way better that that. The portions are beyond generous and the presentation is "artistic". From the curry to the pizza's, everything is great. The outside patio in the summer is the best. Bernie's was normally pretty good, pre-COVID. Good sushi, wings, etc and all fresh. Ate there yesterday for the first time in two + years, and it is clearly not the same old Bernie's. I ordered dry rubbed wings that I only ate one of, because it tasted like it had been in the frozen in the back of their freezer since spring of 2020, that the cook attempted to disguise by over dry running and incinerating to jerky. Predictably, I woke up in the middle of the night with all the best food poisoning symptoms. What's up with restaurants choosing to serve customers food that has clearly spoiled due to slow turnover? I love this place... the food is always pretty good, drinks are fairly priced and of course hookah is always nice. I kind of wish there was a place where we could smoke the hookah inside, a lot more people would come if this was an option. I come here on saturdays around 830 for he live band and it's normally an older crowd. As soon as 1045-1130 hits the crowd dynamic changes dramatically and the younger peeps come in. This place is fantastic. I wish my husband and I discovered it sooner. It was right down the street from our apartment and one of the top places on my list that I'd love to bring back to Boston with me. I am a huge fan of places you can drink & be outside. Their outside area is big, has a good amount of tables and a kick-ass kind of random fountain. Bernie's was actually the first (and only so far) hookah bar I've been too. I never actually got to try the hookah but I still think it was pretty rad that they had it. We almost always went here strictly for drinks but I did try their Thai pizza and it was yummy. They have three different bar areas which all have different feels to them, all awesome. (note: see first review for great description of each area). One afternoon a friend and I stopped here for some mimosas and it was just so relaxing and comfortable. I always felt welcome and the atmosphere is so chill, during the day and at night. Alright, it's been five years. Might as well do the ol' Bernie an update. I don't think I came here at all between my most recent visits and my 2012 review. But I've been to Bernie's three or four times in the last two months and overall, it's been really a pleasant experience. Except for the fact that one visit we had our server just up and leave the place without checking in on us or telling us someone was taking over, the service has been stunningly excellent. I also forgot how much fun smoking a hookah is in the pouring rain but the provided blanket and space heaters were a nice touch. And the sushi bar was great! My husband is a sushi fiend and I like me the little veggie rolls, and both of our appetites were satiated while sitting at the sushi bar. I can't wait for the sun to come out (if it does this summer) so I can lounge out on the giant patio and enjoy some beer and food. So if you haven't been, Bernie's is an eclectic bar/restaurant hodgepodge with a huge outdoor seating area and various indoor spaces to hang out. They have a full bar and a crazy big and delicious food menu with options for all sorts of appetites and diets. However, the one thing I'll note that is disgusting is their bathrooms smell just as awful as I remember when I was a drunk college student. The smell permeates the sushi bar section of the restaurant. Yuck! Someone get an air freshener in there, please! read more

You can't live in Anchorage without frequenting Bernies in the summertime. It's a blast with all the different areas to hang out in. Definitely a comfortable local favorite downtown. Mind you, it's not huge like Koots, but Bernie's does boast a huge backyard type area. Tons of seating and awesome mingling opportunities. I can't tell you how many random people I've met out at Bernie's, locals and tourists alike. There were these Australian guys this one time... And this random millionaire with his body guard this other time... Oh and we had a prom themed ladies night that attracted a lot of fun attention! I love me a good time! There's a stage for a live band outside and they play decent music, but I'm usually upstairs with the DJ and dance floor so I honestly couldn't tell you what kind of music is typically playing outside. Upstairs they play popular dance/hip hop/pop music. It is a pain when it gets so crowded that the bouncers stop allowing people upstairs, and they aren't as friendly as other places in town. BUT they do their job and are good at it. I don't usually drink beer here, it's a limited selection, and I don't typically come here to enjoy a beer. This is my "let's get our groove on" bar. I think I take more shots here because they don't interrupt my dancing like a drink would which might not necessarily be a good thing :) The food here is actually pretty good, and it's better to come before the party crowd if you're going to eat. Same if you're wanting to use the hookah. You'll definitely find yourself in enjoyment whatever your reason for coming to Bernie's. Only thing negative... Was in Anchorage for almost a week and needed a drink. Bernie's helped out immensely. Met two other cyclists here who shared with me fine liquors, some harty IPA's and a nice night of long distance revelry. The wait staff was hipsterish, friendly, cool and never far away. They have many beers on tap including some local brews from the Kenai (Kassik's) and Midnight Sun, in addition to the Budwiserish Alaskan Amber and Ale...etc... Its kind of a maze inside with an odd setup, but when I go back here in two weeks I hope to enjoy the patio since it is huge! If ever in downtown Anchorage and looking for a nice and non pretentious hang check out Bernie's. I like it read more
