I was referred to Bernie"s for lunch by the proprietor of a Laramie fly shop. Service was prompt and friendly. I had chips and salsa while waiting for the meal--and they were exactly that; satisfying, not spectacular. My meal was a pair of smothered enchiladas, on the waitress's recommendation, and a similarly treated burrito, all shredded beef (the burrito also featuring beans--and note, this isn't a huge burrito, but about 1.5 inches around. This place is strange. You either love it or hate it. I ate here once and hated it. You can always tell what kind of Mexican food you will get based off the chips and salsa. Well the salsa is nothing more than store bought pace picante sauce from what I could tell. You can guess what the food was like. After giving this place two shots, I'm not sold on Bernies. I'm torn between 2-3 stars because I will say that the price point is very reasonable and I did really like the green chile, it felt pretty homemade and fresh. However, I didn't love the chicken salad as it tasted similar to ingredients found in taco bell. The lettuce and cheese are super processed and it felt like the chips, salsa, bean dip, queso, and guac were all from the tostitos brand and not homemade. The meats weren't bad and I've heard positive remarks about the enchiladas and chimichangas. Also, the taco tortillas do look really yummy. But in my case, the salad really highlighted the vegetables which were not the freshest. I would try it again but I wasn't in love with it :/ Although go for the green chile! read more

At my last place of employment, he'd bring by breakfast/snack burritos every morning around 10 a.m. Super cheap, excellent quality. Only negative about this place is the location. I've heard very mixed reviews of this place from people who live in Laramie and I finally had the chance to try it myself. We ordered a Large bean dip & chips to start. It was good, but much smaller in size than we had expected for a Large. I also tried an enchilada and a tostada. The sauce on the enchilada had a strange - almost metallic - aftertaste and I'm almost positive it came right out of a can. The tostada was fine - nothing memorable or extra flavorful. The restaurant was deserted when we arrived and had 2-4 other tables by the time we left. The owner, Bernie, was in the dining room eating when we arrived and he proceeded to spend the evening chatting with diners. I am very disappointed in the quality of food. I ate two chicken burritos covered with green chille salsa. Nothing outstanding about the flavor. Somewhat bland and does not satisfy a craving for authentic Mexican food. Menu is lacking from the traditional Mexican fare such as Carne Asada, Buche, Lengua, Tripas, fresh chips and salsa, ect....Most exciting item on the menu is the Menudo. So I judge Mexican eating establishments buy basic guidelines. Kitschy decor, carnitas, quality of tortillas and price. Bernies doesn't serve carnitas, so yea not good. The kitschy decor is appropriate. Only had one tortilla, fried so hard to tell quality because you fry and type of bread it's tasty. Price is reasonable. I feel the beef had little seasoning. Service was friendly but not intrusive. The floors are clean so that's a good thing. Also it should be noted that there were no wild animals meandering in the dining room, always a plus. If I could give half a star, I would. I am sitting in the restaurant as I write this review. We ordered 40 minutes ago and still have not received our food. That's not when we arrived. There are 5 tables with people. Not busy. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant where we had to pay for chips. Awful! There were 4 of us that came in around 5:00PM on a Saturday night and there were, probably, 20-25 people in Bernies. We waited at the front desk that said "Please wait to be seated" for a few minutes and then Bernie came by and said "sit anywhere." We sat next to a family that we found out later was Bernie's family and the waiter came by fairly quickly and took our orders. I ordered a Margarita and a Chicken Chimichanga, the other three ordered a (1)Taco Salad, (2) Some kind of hot dog wrapped up in a tortilla and a shredded beef burrito smothered with red sauce, and (3) another shredded beef burrito. My margarita came quickly and it tasted like some pretty cheap mix and the usual bowl of chips and salsa. The salsa was cold, right out of the fridge, I suspect, as were the chips. You'd think that putting them, at least, in the microwave would have been a simple task. Bernie came over and sat down with his family next to us and proceeded to converse until someone needed to pay their bill and off he'd go for the next few minutes and then back to his family. We sat there for 25 minutes - the restaurant by then had cleared out to just having a few customers so my point is, it wasn't very busy and our order should have been there 15 minutes earlier - and then the waiter came over to our guys and told them that they had ran out of shredded beef. Obviously, the waiter hadn't put in our order until then and found this out and came back to tell our guys. One guy said he'd pass on his burrito but keep the hot dog thing and the other guy went with ground beef burrito. So we waited another 30 minutes, still nothing, and since Bernie was sitting next to me I told him that "I only had two days off" could he see what the hold-up was. He went back to the kitchen for a few minutes and told us that our order would be right out. Ten minutes later the Taco Salad arrived. The waiter handed it to the guy that had ordered it and the four of us looked at each other in amazement as to what it was. I had no idea of what this "ring of taco chips" was surrounding. It was just awful looking. Then came my chimichanga. It was about 4 inches long and 2-3 inches wide covered in tired old lettuce and some "green chili sauce." I looked at the thing and one of the guys just busted out laughing, he said, because of the look on my face was priceless. Generally the waiter will tell you at a Mexican restaurant, "Be careful, the plates are hot." This thing felt like it had just come out of the refrigerator. It was cold, the smallest chimichanga I'd ever seen and just awful at best. I hadn't eaten since the A.M. so I said to hell with it and ate it rather than sending it back to heat the damn thing up. Then the hot dog :thing" arrived. The guy had ordered his burrito with the red sauce and when he cancelled it because of them running out of the shredded beef the cook misread the order and put the red sauce on the hot dog. He said that the red sauce was the same stuff as the cold salsa that we had originally got with the chips - only watered down! Our fourth guy said that his was just as bad as everyone else's. When we went to pay the bill we ask Bernie if we could get some credit because it took so long to get served. He did agree to that which turned out to be the best part of the experience. Bernies looks like it's been there for quite some time. My point being is, if his food and service is that bad he should not be in business. Laramie isn't that big and the word should have gotten out that the place is lousy. I wouldn't ever go back and I'm surprised I didn't have nightmares when I got home and went to sleep about "The horror," the horror." read more

I'm very surprised to see such low reviews. I dined at Bernie's quite a few times in 2004 while I lived in Laramie for a short period of time. Food was inexpensive, and very tasty. From what I recall service was very friendly. Atmosphere was laid back and always had good background music. I still order enchilada verdes at other TexMex restaurants hoping that it would be as good as Bernie's... And I'm never quite as pleased. I even love their refried beans and that's one thing I never eat. I would take the 900 mile road trip again and this would be my first stop in Laramie. read more

I lived in Laramie for nearly a year, driving past this place, never noticing it was there. A true hole-in-the-wall-dive, you would never know the inside hides Laramie's Casa Bonita of cheesey garish faux Mexican decor. I discovered this place a month before we moved, and found the food so tasty I ate there 6 times that month. By Mexican standards, the food is bland, but I dislike jalapeños so choosing the mild option for everything was perfect for me. Going right after the lunch rush, I was served by Bernie himself, who is quite the charming and talkative guy. He is full of suggestions of what to order, as there are many options. We waited 15 minutes to be seated. No one was in front of us. We sat down and have been sitting here for two hours. Chips and salsa are $5.00 extra, not included and obviously from the grocery store. We ordered three plain beef burritos and just got our food. Which is also below average and on the verge of being cold. Waitress is nice but within our two hours, we have not gotten a refill. 1 of 5. Unfortunately the food here was horrible. The beans, salsa, and enchilada sauce all tasted canned and chips were definitely from a bag. Also portions were tiny! My husband had "burritos" that were about the size of fruit rollups. My chimichanga was smaller than the frozen burritos you can buy at the store. After coming from Tucson AZ where there is excellent mexican food on every corner, this was a HUGE disappointment. The staff was friendly and food came out quickly but this was easily the worst mexican food I have ever had, by a long shot. Being from California where we have Mexican restaurants up the gazoo, we always make it a point to stop at Bernie's when we are visiting family in Laramie. It's more of a "New Mexico" style restaurant, not the typical Mexican style food. It's very tasty and the fresh Green Chili is delicous. Highly recommend the tacos and enchiladas. Always have a positive experience when we come here. read more
