Went there today for the first time. I ordered 8 pretzels, the guy behind the counter took my money and had gloves on. He gave me my change and with the same gloves on he grabbed all my pretzels and put them in a bag. I wish I would have said something but felt like maybe I was over reacting. I wouldn't have been though because money is disgusting and who knows how long he had those gloves on before or what else he touched. I was disgusted and won't be back. To top it off when I got home I realized he only gave me 7 pretzels. I didn't like the pretzels either, they tasted old. read more

Great pretzels! They're so tasty when they're super fresh and hot, plus their pricing is very fair. My only complaint is lack of condiments (at least that I could see), so if you don't mind getting condiments elsewhere it's not a problem. I don't think you can go wrong getting soft pretzels here. read more

New Location, very clean, still has the famous Bernie's flavor from Aldan location (and the Bazaar!). You won't find a better pretzel, although they don't last long (go stale in a few hours), typically they don't go uneaten. Hot and fresh, friendly staff. I stopped pass the Bernies pretzels off Providence rd, the location that closed down so o thought, but to my surprise they were open. I stopped in, purchased 2 cinnamon sugar pretzels and 1 plain. If it wasn't for me being a block away from my house 14 minutes away from Bernies, I would have returned these pretzels and demanded a refund. They were stale in texture, burnt at the bottom without being black in color. They had a burnt taste to the point the pretzels tasted sour. Ive been spending good money at this place before they closed and the new location on Baltimore pike. I was extremely disappointed with the quality and taste. That location needs to closed back down if they are going to sell garbage like I purchased. I spent close to $5 for those three pretzels and ALL of them were thrown in the trash. The lady who sold them knew that those pretzels should have been discarded, however, she sold them to me. Shamed on you Bernies. Don't let expanding ruin your product. read more

Best pretzels in the area! My go to place every Sunday for an Eagles game. The pretzels are always fresh, hot and soft. Usually call and my order is ready in 15 minutes or less. I usually go with the nuggets as we like to dip then while watching the game. For the Super Bowl I usually order a tray with the mini hot dogs. Make sure to give them a try. I attempted to check out the new Bernie's as they now have new owners. The place was packed with an abundance of people behind the counter but for some reason that did not translate to fast service. While I was waiting I noticed that they had more than doubled the price of a single pretzel to $1, that the older woman who was prepping the pretzels wasn't looking too confident, and that some of the pretzels were so very dark they appeared burnt. I left without buying and don't think I'll be returning based on the price alone. I'm super sad, Bernie's has been my go-to place for years, but I almost always buy my soft pretzels by the bag for work and I can't justify those prices for what appeared to be overdone pretzels. Oh, how I miss the days of Philly Hot Dog carts, with their oblong, thick soft pretzels, crusted with salt, stuffed in paper bags. There was always a large jar of yellow mustard ready for you to coat that pretzel with if you liked, too. Those were Federal pretzels. Even after I moved away, every time I came back I had to get my pretzel fix. I had a sad when Federal got sold off to some big corporation and disappeared from South Philadelphia. They still make pretzels, but they're not the same. Sigh. Other bakeries have attempted to step in and fill the breach, including the conglomerate that now makes them. They're...OK. Then there is Bernies. I was introduced to Bernies by fellow Yelper Dee M, when she brought some still-warm pretzels in a bag. Mmmmm. Yeasty. Soft, but with a crust. Just the right amount of salt. These I could fall for. A few weeks later the Patriarch and I were out and about. I had a hankering for a good pretzel. Thanks to the handy dandy Yelp app l realized we were very close to Bernie's, so off we went. The bakery is tiny! It's located in a 1960's era strip of stores, each space pretty small, with lots of lit signs. Blink and you will miss Bernie's as you scan. The strip is at the corner of Springfield & Providence Roads, and it's angled so it is triangular - with one end close to Providence and one close to Springfield. Bernie's is a shop very close to Springfield, keep a note of that. There are multiple rows of parking, getting shorter as they approach the 'point' of that triangle FYI. When we entered, the warm smell of yeasty bread enveloped us. Wonderful. There was a guy who came to the counter, clearly one of the bakers, two people making pretzels, picking up hanks of dough, quickly twisting them, laying on large trays. A big oven on one side of the room, when they opened the oven we could see trays of pretzels rotating inside. In front along the counter were some 'nuggets' of pretzels in a display case, and a freezer case with water ice. We ordered some pretzels, waiting a few minutes for freshly baked ones to be scooped out of that oven. Heaven. It's not fancy. It's still not Federals of old. It's darn good though and it's my new favorite place. read more

Monday morning one of my co-workers came in and told me about this great pretzel they had this weekend. I asked where and he didn't know... I said I don't care if it's 8 am, you text him right now and find out where. He said in Aldan... Before he could tell me where, I said Bernie's... I think I found out about Bernie's when Reginia had the Review of the Day late last year. I added it to my Pretzel bookmarks. You know what? I wanted a pretzel, knew that other's thought it was great too and decided to go for it. I went at 11:30, which is late for my pretzel game, but the place was crowded. I think three people in front of me. I started doing math in my head, to figure out how much I could get where I wouldn't feel ripped off... These were good prices and I went with 25 pretzels. They didn't have them ready, but I watched as they made them. Someone rolled them, someone dunked them and slid six to a paddle... As they should be... Two paddles in the oven and repeat. I was happy... Then my pretzels came in a bag. Jumped in my car and before I was out of the lot a pretzel was in my mouth. A really good pretzel. Super Happy with it. The staff were friendly, good price and great taste. I personally like a thicker/denser pretzel, but I'd take one of these any day... On the way back from Baltimore. We made a special stop here out of our way to try this place, Since I saw an article stating it's the top 10 places for pretzels and I was not disappointed. The place sells only pretzel and ice cream. That day was like 95 degree outside and when we walked in it just just as hot inside and the 2 people that was working hard. I give them a lot of credit working in the heat. Very friendly and the pretzel was so good and hot when we got it. We got 25 pretzels for less than $17.00 what a bargain. A wonderful crust with a very soft and moist interior. just the right amount of coarse salt outside. they have a certain tang to them that I remember from decades ago as a child. I think of it as the perfect Catholic school recess pretzel. they are just wonderful. My kids had the pleasure of having Bernie's pretzels while they were in grade school. occasionally one would make it home to me. Anyone that is giving Bernies a high review, hasn't been there recently. I've been going to Bernies for 30 years, and I can tell you,recently, they are lousy!. Jim, the pretzel maker isn't there anymore. He was a mainstay there. Very friendly and accommodating. Whoever took over the operations currently is ruining the reputation and the following that was inherent of the Bernies past. The pretzels are smaller, don't have the distinct taste which would incline you to drive from wherever just for a 'Bernies ' pretzel. The hours and staff vary, with people standing around looking at there cell phones. Unfortunately, today was my last stop at Bernie's. Totally turned off by the product and atmosphere. read more

After a busy and stressful day of Christmas shopping in Springfield and Media, I needed some starch to calms my nerves. I was right on time, pretzel coming out the oven when I arrived. We were greeted as soon as we came in by a gentleman (my daughter said he had a man-bun, I don't recall); although they were closing early due to the holiday, he was still friendly and I didn't feel rushed. I really like that you can see them rolling and baking right in front of you. Not only was I able to get a warm pretzel but nothing helps stress like a water ice in December to wash it down; they also carry ice cream. Only thing I would like to see is a couple pretzel made without the salt; I'm that girl hanging the pretzel out the car window trying to get it off and then when I get to my destination realize most of the salt fell in my seat :o I will say, the gentleman did give me the pretzels with the least salt. I will definitely be back and probably dust off my first one before I get back in the car. read more

Their service is horrible. I work at a school who frequently orders from them. I called on Tuesday for an order for today at 9:30 and at almost 10am I had to call 7 times before someone answered. The man said they were backed up and as soon as the delivery person came back that our order would go out. I called back just to see if the order was still in the store so we could arrange for someone to go get it and I was left on hold for 7 minutes until I ultimately hung up. It is 1:48 in the afternoon and I never received a phone call or the pretzels that we ordered. This is a SCHOOL & the order was part of a prize for the kids - this is just unacceptable. The best pretzels I've had in the city, and they open so early it's often worth it to get some after a rough night out on the town. The cinnamon ones are so addictive they might be spiked with heroin. And there's nothing better than a fresh Philadelphia pretzel right out of the oven. The trick is not to leave them out under a heat lamp, and to keep turning and burning product throughout the day. And this place is busy enough that nothing sits out for too long. I've asked for well done here and gotten it as well. And trust me on the well done, especially fresh out of the oven it's amazing.
