I have a pair of nearly 25 year old Wusthof chef's knives that badly needed sharpening. Over the years I'd tried to do it myself, either with a crude handheld sharpener, a purpose-built knife sharpening machine and even a set of whetstones. They always helped a little, but it was never great, and certainly not as good as when my knives were new. I figured I needed an expert but didn't know where to go. Yelp was very helpful finding Bernie's, which was close to home and super convenient. When you get there, you'll wonder for a minute if they even do small jobs like this because it's a shop that looks like it mainly deals with industrial equipment or something. But rest assured your blades are welcome, just go to the little office at the right of the shop. All in all, an amazing experience. For only $9, my two high end chef's knives are as sharp, if not sharper, than the day I got them. I dropped them off at lunch and they were even ready before the 4pm close. Not too many local places around that you can take your saw blades to for sharpening. Got 3 circular saw blades sharpened for less than 1/2 of what a new one would cost. Blades came out razor sharp. This is a gem. I called and they said bring your knives in by 11am and you can pick them up in the afternoon. So, that is what I did today. Very polite and competent staff who sharpened 8 knives and a scissors. By 5:30pm, I had washed the knives as directed and prepared dinner. I was given an olde push-mower that did not turn. I called a few places and Bull Sharpening Service down Roosevelt said they could take a look. I brought it in and after a week there they eventually tell me the problem is a rusted tapered bolt that was stuck and preventing operation. They had started to sharpen, but now it was stuck, so they didn't charge. I called around and told my tale of woe, and Bernie's sounded hopeful that they could fix it, so I bring it in. The receptionist thought I was talking about a different bolt, one that is fairly common to lose, but frowned when they saw this was not the case with my mower. She hauls it back to one of the workers in the back to have a look. He checks it out and decides it is a lost cause. I ask if they want the mower for parts, but since it is an oddball mower they pass. Despondent, I drag it out. I notice the blades are spinning. Shocked, I test it on some grass and it seems to work. Did Bull fix it and it was a delayed reaction of their time-released repair? Does Bernie's have a magic touch that can fix things without tools? Who knows. It's still not 100%, but it works well enough for my tiny yard, and it was all free. read more

I took three german knives in for sharpening. The knives were good quality but had not been sharpened professionally ever (and were over 20 yrs old). They called me to tell me they were ready after a couple hours, and I found them carefully wrapped in paper. I took them home and was so impressed, that I returned two days later with 3 more knives and scissors. Again- fast service, excellent results and prices. I've never had my knives sharpened and boy does it make a difference. I dropped off 2 knives in the morning and they were ready by early afternoon. I spent around $7 for 2 knives. Went back to Bernie's last week to have our vintage push mower sharpened. Before I took it in, I noticed that something appeared to be wrong with it- it was only cutting on one side- and badly at that. The sharpening guy at Bernie's noticed it too. He had to take it apart- something to do with the ball bearings- and only charged me $6 to fix it! The mower good as new again and cuts the grass like butter. Took in a couple of pruning shears that hadn't been sharpened in at least 7 years. They are now as sharp as new, engraved with our name and working great! When I picked them up I was pleasantly surprised that they were wrapped in heavy duty plastic and the shear blades were also individually wrapped. Very safe. Very nice. Excellent service! I dropped off my lawn mower blade in the morning and had a call that it was ready by mid afternoon the same day. Super quick service. Easy to park in front of the building to drop off and pick up. Also had blade coated in wax/plastic so that I wouldn't cut myself putting it back on the mower. The wax peeled off easily after installation.
