    Duck l'orange

I can't believe it has taken me this long to have dinner at Bertrand. My husband and I felt fortunate to get a reservation on a Friday. I highly recommend calling ahead, as this petite restaurant often books out during the weekend. My husband got the duck l'orange. The skin was crispy and the sauce sticky. I got the halibut with the tarragon sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked!!! The tarragon basil pesto sauce was light and the side of peppery arugula salad was a nice acidic complement to the meaty fish. It is clear the owner cares deeply about high quality ingredients, exceptionally cooked cuisine and pays very close attention to details. I'm looking forward to enjoying my next dinner on the patio. See you soon!

Bertrand's is reservation only and BYOB. This cozy little spot was beautifully decorated for the holidays and their staff was so lovely! We got a variety of things - my favorites were the escargot, pomme frites (dare I say, some of the best in town), French onion soup, beef bourguignon, and the orange duck (sadly not pictured because I was too excited to eat it which means I'll have to come back!).

Went here with my mom on a Thursday night. The ambiance and dining rooms are beautiful. I had the Boeuf Bourguignon and it was out of this world delicious. My mom ordered the salmon and she loved it. We also ordered the pomme frites but they were not what I expected. They were tasty but not the shoestring fries which is what I experienced while living in France. The owner came out to talk with us which was awesome. He has had such an interesting life. Highly recommend trying this place out!

Amazing dinner experience at Bertrand!! The appetizer options are a little limited but everything's great! We had the escargots and chicken liver pate - so good. For large plate, we went for the scallops with asparagus and beef Bourguignon with mashed potatoes, both recommended by our server Emily. And they were super flavorful and delicious - especially love the scallops, very fresh and cooked to perfections! Shout out to Emily - she's super friendly and gave great recommendations. Both the interior and patio are gorgeous, it's hard to pick lol but with either one, you won't disappoint! Overall highly recommend if you are looking for an authentic French cuisine!

We found this gem on our last trip to Pittsburgh. We came twice in one week last time, so we had to come back. It was just as delicious as we remembered. The escargot was tender and delicious and the pate was wonderful. Then we had the duck a l'orange and steak au poivre for the main course, both delicious. And we finished with pot de crème and cheesecake. And several to go boxes. Absolutely love this place. Wish we could bring it back to North Carolina with us. We haven't been here when it's been warm enough for the patio, but the outdoor area is so cute and looks like it will be great when the weather warms up. We will be back on our next trip. You should definitely come here.

We've been here twice. Tonight we celebrated a 33 year anniversary. I had the scallops, my husband the pork chop. Everything was delicious. Lou greeted us and made us feel like we entered our own dining room. Throughout the night, we heard him greeting several diners warmly. Shannon, guided us on menu options. With champagne (BYOB) and delicious entrees, we had a lovely night. All was topped off with a refreshing key lime dessert. Can't wait to return!!

Not sure where to start. Our friend group celebrates birthdays and we picked Bertrand for the May birthday girl. The vibe: charm, simple elegance. We sat inside because there were 11 of us. Emily was our wonderful server and manager; she was supported by Lili. Our wine was uncorked immediately so the party started (BYO BTW). We started with escargot, delicious! For entrees, quite a variety. Several had the beef bourguignon. Everyone loved it. Two of us had the salad nicoise with perfectly seared ahi tuna and an amazing tarragon dressing, almost a pesto. Other entrees enjoyed included the pork chop, the halibut and the lamb. Sides were ok, very small, but the entrees were generous. We shared a few desserts, pots de crème, French cheesecake and key lime cheesecake. The owner, Luigi "Lou" spent significant time with us making sure we were taken care of. Lovely evening, perfect meal and experience. Definitely coming back.

Should one make a reservation for a Friday night dinner around 6?

Yes I would suggest making a reservation as the restaurant doesn’t have a large number of tables and it is very busy on Fridays.

I was last at Point Brugge in April 2022, when the grub and warm welcome were well-worth the price. I'm not sure what has happened since then, but if my most recent experience is anything to go by, SERIOUS changes have to be undertaken at this once gem of Point Breeze for it to justify the equally serious price increases that have gone by since then. The food: BLAND and prepared without care for the customer. To start off, my companion and I both got the "soup du jour." It was tomato and onion cream. Completely mediocre and far too sweet. I could've bought a prepared soup at Trader Joe's of the same quality. For our mains, I got a $36 (!) salmon with fried veggies and lentils. The fish was OK (it's hard to wreck good salmon), but the veggies were positively DRIPPING in oil and the lentils were salted to all hell. I could not finish the latter. My companion ordered a $16 vegetable sandwich and specifically requested no red onions. Guess what? The sandwich and its side salad were chock-full of red onion slices. So much for customer service. The restaurant: GROSS. The remnants of mussels and other food items were LITTERED all over the floor of the "top" area of the restaurant. The walls are full of cracks; the paint is peeling; and where the drywall meets the floorboard, AVERT your gaze! Giant, gaping holes pepper the entire lower part of the wall, as if positively begging for a rodent infestation. How is this up to code? The service: UNFRIENDLY. I think we were served by the manager. He had sort of a strange attitude and cadence, and only asked us anything about the food BEFORE we had started eating the soups. Consider asking us after we've finished something? I think he was mad that I had only ordered a water. Sorry! Alcohol is bad for you, and I for one wasn't going to slurp down a sugary "mocktail" next to all those oily mushrooms. Next stop? UPMC Presby. Apart from him, the staff was underdressed and loud (although, for what it's worth, a bit friendlier). However, I prefer to know if I'm interacting with a paid employee or a freight train driver who has just gotten off a 16-hour-shift driving on the CSX mailine. I get it: nobody is expecting you to wear a tuxedo in 2026. But let's at least try to outdress the most casual of customers, no? Considering Point Brugge was once a place I took people from out-of-town to show off the East End, this is a sad, sad fall from grace. I will NOT be going back, and, as long as they don't get their act together, neither should you. Not in this economy. $36 oily azz mushrooms...

Fantastic vibe in there as well, cool lighting (although something from up above kept falling). It's a highly acclaimed place for a reason. I got to try their beet soup (borscht), tea, potato pancake, and rice pudding dessert. The menu changes decently consistently I believe, and I did visit a little while ago, for notice. The food was very tasty. Huge potato pancake that was cooked perfectly with a nice topping of what I can only describe as vegan sour cream and some sort of very flavorful vegetables. I quite liked it, surprisingly tasty and creamy topping. Now the borscht, which I tend to be picky with, was just okay. The number one detractor for the borscht was the salt level. The food is just far, far too salty (the pancake was pretty salty too). Other than that, quite good. Love the side of rye. The dessert was very good. Surprisingly light. Came with a little caramelized baked fruit on top (apple/pear, something like that). Rice was reasonably creamy and very flavorful. So good! All in all, a nice spot for a nice dinner. Especially great for vegans. However, the food did taste too salty for my liking.

The cool vibe restaurant is tucked away up a short flight of stairs on Filbert Street. It gives the place a cozy, hideaway feel with brick walls and murals. It's pretty popular, so you might have to wait a few minutes for a table, but it moves pretty quick. The menu focuses heavily on crepes and French toast, and they do both very well. I went for a savory crepe that was loaded with eggs and topped with a rich sauce and diced vegetables. It came with a side of fresh fruit which was a nice touch. We also ordered a sweet crepe to share. It was beautifully presented with chocolate drizzle, berry sauce, and a massive pile of whipped cream. The coffee is solid too. Verdict: This is a consistent and reliable brunch spot. It was the perfect way to kick off my trip. I will definitely be back next time I am in town.

But the star of the show for me is the Shakshouka. I have gotten it the last 2 times I went. You also have to try their Dirty Chai. My only critique is the hostess at the front. She appeared overwhelmed by her role and was not warm. We were actually told by the waiters that "she is serious about her list". Which would be great if she managed it effectively. When I brought concerns that we had been pushed down the list 3 times for other parties. She responded "well, how do you know that" to which I responded "we watched you take their names down after ours and sit them before us". Her response was to shoo me off and tell me to go find a table myself; to which I did. But what a poor way to manage your stress, responsibility, and consumers. On the bright side my waiter/waitress was awesome per usual.
