Hubs and I came here on a snowy Saturday evening and found a good crowd. He made reservations, but they were lost. Lou, the owner, sat us without fret. The dining room has tastefully done decor and brightly lit, yet with an intimate vibe. Our waitress attended to us quickly. The menu had about 20 different entrees and a handful of sides (green beans, asparagus, potatoes, and fries). We couldn't decide on the entrees as so much sounded good from the pork chop to the scallops to the filet medallions. I ended up getting the scallops and hubs got the filet medallions. A warm baguette arrived as we waited. It was delightful with the right amount of crisp. The entrees arrived quickly. I hadn't even finished the baguette when they came. My first impression was the scallops were far from large as described in the menu. They were, though, carefully cooked as it's so easy to overcook them. The sauce was delicious, a white wine and creamy blend. I dipped the remaining pieces of my baguette to savor the flavor. It came with a few pieces of asparagus and they were quite fresh and very lightly cooked. Hubs and I swapped plates so halfway in so I got to try one of the medallions and he had the remaining half (3 scallops and a few pieces of asparagus). The medallion I got was cooked more to well done, while the one Hubs ate was cooked to medium as requested. It was a bit disappointing, but still good. The potatoes were hardy, with chives mixed in. The mushrooms were a delightful and added a good balance to the plate. Overall the meal was good, but a bit pricey. I wouldn't get the scallops alone or you'll be hungry afterwards. Service is awesome. Our waitress, Lauren, was nice and attentive. Lou came by to check on us. When we got our check I asked about Bertrand, the dog. Lauren told Lou we wanted to meet him and he kindly walked us next door to the office and we meet the gentle dog. It was such a kind gesture and made our night! We'll definitely be back to take advantage of the BYOB ($8 corkage fee). It's a place you want to go and take your time, have appetizers, desserts, and sip on your wine. read more

Bertrand's a hidden gem! We stopped in for dinner with friends after reading a few reviews. It's BYOB so we brought our own beer and wine. I asked the server for gluten free options and she gave me a list of options from apps to mains! We started with escargot and shrimp cocktail. Escargot isn't my favorite but this one was flavorful! I had the filet for dinner and tried my friends steak too! We tried all the sides, but the pommel frites could have used a little salt. The best part of the meal was one we met Bertrand (the owners dog), and spoke with the owner about his time at Duquesne! This is definitely a great place to visit but make a reservation! I was glad for the opportunity to return here to try out lunch. I was greeted by "Bertrand", the owner dog and once inside the lounge area was directed to sit anywhere I wanted to including outside. The service here is top notch and the waitress I had was very friendly and attentive to my needs. Having seen the dinner menu last week I noticed that there is a significant price jump if you decide to eat dinner here. The place is small but has that authentic French look about it. I decided to go with the French meatloaf, gravy, and Lyonnaise potatoes. I had to wait a while for my food but I thought good food requires more preparation time. As I was waiting "Bertrand" repeatedly came up to my table and sat down. He is a well behaved dog but naturally I could sense he wanted me to give him scraps. The two waitresses had to repeatedly scoot him out of there but he naturally found his way in again. They did manage to get him outside by the time my meal was ready. The presentation was spot on. I loved the way they "shaved" a tomato to make it appear like a rose. The meatloaf was very good and extremely dense. The potatoes and the tomato itself also were very good. Although I'm normally full from such a meal I did inquire about desserts. Currently all they have for desserts are the tartines listed on the menu. I opted for the Bananas et Nutella. This tartine again took some prep time but it consisted of fresh bananas, chocolate hazelnut spread, whipped cream, strawberries, and grilled country bread. I found it very good however, the country bread was very difficult to cut with a knife. It wasn't overly hard bread since the dessert sat on it. Still I managed to finish it. I did mention that issue to the waitress and she told me she will have the chef work on it. By this time "Bertrand" had found his way in again. I learned that they do not have a regular dessert menu as of yet so expect to pay higher prices if you want a Tartine as a dessert. The chef who I had met last week got rid of him and said he is not supposed to be in the dining room. I heartily agree since this is a high class dining room and their dog should not be allowed in on his own. This place used to be known as Arpino trattoria but has now been taken over by the former chef of Tartine (closed a couple years back in the West End). Tartine means "bread." The have gender neutral restrooms but ladies please note-there's no place to hang your purse. This is my only pet peeve about these types of restrooms so I politely mentioned that omission to the waitress staff. Place is also BYOB. They have their own WiFi. Passcode available upon request. Reservations are recommended for dinner but not for lunch. This place has a lot of potential and a diversified menu. I did notice a couple of vegetarian options on the menu but did not get the opportunity to find out if they have gluten free selections. In addition to entrees, they serve quiches, sandwiches, salads, and a soup. I was very pleased with my visit and was glad they took the time to listen to my suggestions regarding desserts, the restrooms, and most importantly, controlling their dog owner from wandering. Bertrand is located towards the back of Manor Oak Village where most of the shoppes are. There is a private parking lot. read more

I had not heard of this place and found it through Yelp...and let me tell you I AM GLAD I DID!!! The food was excellent! I had the rack of lamb and my wife enjoyed the scallops. We couldn't have been more pleased. I savored every delicious bite. The only thing that topped the amazing food and atmosphere was the personal touch of the owner visiting the guests and engaging in real conversations about your experience there and more. It was worth every dollar and more, we will return and I highly recommend you visit. If you want a high class meal with top of the line service for a reasonable price...go. We decided to try this new French restaurant for our Saturday night out. It's set back off the road and there isn't a ton of signage but our Google Maps got us to the right place. It's small and quaint, with several small touches that make it cozy and romantic. There is a very large column in the center of the room which they top with an oversized vase of flowers. The large mirrors on the walls give the small dining area a much larger feel. Here are the pros and cons. Pros: - The food is fantastic. We had the escargot, lamb entree and filet medallion entree. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavors were wonderful. - The prices are on point for the quality of food. - They have a parking lot which makes it easy to navigate to the restaurant. - The decor is beautiful. - There is a small waiting area, which makes it nice for parties waiting to be seated and not feel as though they are in the way of traffic. Cons: - The wait and hostess staff seemed a bit disorganized. We had a 6:45pm reservation and were not sat until after 7pm. The waitress had a difficult time with what was available from the menu. Once we finished ordering, the menus were left with us at the table and we were stuck trying to figure out what to do with them. The waitress kept the cork from our wine bottle and when we left had no way to take the remainder of our wine with us. Honestly, we would definitely return again. Overall our experience was a positive one. The disorganization could've been an off night and it didn't really take away from our experience as a whole. read more

Nice little French restaurant with great service (Emily was super sweet) and the owner, Lou, even came to our table and talked to us for a while which was the best added bonus. Bertrand has been our go-to restaurant for special family events and more. Well, this time Lou and his team outdid themselves. We celebrated my parent's 60th wedding anniversary and Lou made accommodations for all of us. We were 22 in total! Lou worked with us on the menu and planning ahead to make it seamless for his staff and other guests. They all went above and beyond. We had all our favorites including the onion soup, silky patè, perfectly cooked steak frites, and beef bourguignonne and more. We all sat in the dining room since our party was so large, but the outdoor patio is beautiful, lush with flowers and hummingbirds. My parents were thrilled not only that we all were in one place at one time but the location was key. I was not able to get any pictures of our food as we were enjoying ourselves too much. We definitely will be back. Lou is a consummate restauranteur having been in the business for decades. A real gem in Pittsburgh. read more

It's a little small, but they do have a few cute tables outside when the weather is nice. The owner was so friendly and welcoming, talking to us about the menu and his favorite dishes. I got the scallops and my husband got the breaded chicken. They were both so good. Everything was cooked perfectly, and had awesome flavor. We tried Bertrand after not being able to get into Poulet Bleu. Bertrand is located in the back of a strip mall. The owner, Lou is a serial entrepreneur and has had many restaurants over multiple decades. We had pate, rack of lamb and steak au poivre. Food was tasty with generous portions and the staff was very hospitable. As others have mentioned, Lou visits with every table. It's also BYOB with a very modest droit de bouchon or corkage fee. I would not call this authentically French cuisine but rather French inspired. We still prefer Poulet Bleu if we could get a reservation! read more

We went for lunch one day and it wasn't busy at all. By the time we left, the place was empty. Since there aren't a ton of options right here, I thought it would be busier. It's not the easiest place to find which may be reason. The place is cute inside and would be nice to sit outside during the Summer. Food- the menu all looked good. I asked for a recommendation and ended up with the meatloaf and lyonnaise potatoes. Both were good. I wish there was more of it though. Or if the waitress offered a salad or appetizer because the entree was smaller than a typical Pittsburgh lunch. Service was good and they didn't seem in a rush to kick us out. A friend and I went for dinner last Friday, and loved it! 6:00 was the golden hour. Just as we put in our order, it started to get packed. It's a really cute, nicely decorated little place, it's just that -- little. Frankly, it felt a bit cramped, but it was fine. The table was TINY, though, and proved to be difficult to have everything on it. Service was very good, if not too attentive. Once, she even came over with a new iced tea for me when mine was half gone, and I had to tell her that that's exactly how I wanted it, and I was keeping my half full, perfectly balanced glass. She seemed perplexed. I guess no one has ever not appreciated a fresh drink (?). We both were a tad boring and got the poached salmon, but I had the mashed potatoes on the side. She had the green beans. We were both really pleased with the food. It was all FRESH!! And cooked to order! A little watercress salad and pickled cabbage were on the plate with the salmon. Both tiny sides were delicious and perfectly dressed, though the visual is kind of weird. Plus, your selected extra side came on a separate plate, which made it mildly difficult to eat comfortably. It's a postage stamp of a table. They should try to subtract plates, not add them. BYOB. Next time, I'll bring a bottle, but I think I may have to put it on the floor. Excellent food -- can't wait to go back and try something else. I wish they had a bigger dessert menu. The pot de creme was really good, but I was hoping for more variety. Maybe a soufflé or a tart? A cozy, festively and tastefully decorated restaurant tucked in an unlikely spot in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Bertrand met and then exceeded our expectations. Bring a nice bottle of wine, try the Escargot, and pick anything from the menu as you can't go wrong. We enjoyed the scallops and rack of lamb. Both were cooked perfectly. Above and beyond the food, the owner is a wonderful host, stopping by each table to say hello and spend time with each guest. His sincerity is refreshing, welcoming, and you will feel like family by the time you leave. This is exactly what you would hope for and expect from a restaurant giving homage to the quaint, local French cafe/restaurants you'd expect to find in a quiet neighborhood in France. Just had dinner here this evening and I cannot say enough good things about it. The food was fantastic. My parents both had the halibut and raved about how perfectly it was cooked and how delicious it was. My husband's lamb was flavorful and came out medium rare, as requested. I had the steak au poivre and wanted to keep eating long after I was full. The staff was pleasant and efficient and the owner is a super interesting man to speak with. Plus, we got to see Bertrand the dog at the end of the night. ;) Bertrand is perfect for a date night or for dinner with a few friends. We can't wait to return to try lunch! read more

I was so extremely disappointed! My first time at Bertrand and I could hardly enjoy my salad. I arrived at 1:30pm they close at 2pm....ordered a nicoise salad... which was so lacking, no potaotes, no onion and no sear on the tuna and a very sloppy presentation....I asked for bread and was told NO..they don't serve bread at lunch! I asked for a glass of wine.... No wine...I wasn't told it was byob, and being new to the area, and single, I didn't know, yet I was never even offered ice tea or a soft drink. Only tap water! UGH I am so sorry...I spent a month at a time in my visits to France...and was expecting French cuisine, and polite, kind service .....this was totally unacceptible..besides which the wait person Emily screamed inside the restaurant....who knows why.... and.when I showed.up at 130 checked her watch to see.the time! I didn't get my last bite down when she came over with a check.....I paid cash and regretfully left a 20% tip. So, No coffee, no dessert, no bread, no wine, sloppy salad.. and only tap water.....and, I even texted them before coming! After my meager excuse for a salad, no bread, wine or dessert, I left. UNSATISFIED, RUSHED AND HUNGRY....at 2:10pm as they were vaccuming! Annoying ...and rude. My search for an authentic French restaurant in Pittsburgh will continue..this IS NOT IT! Bertran's is a pleasant surprise in Pittsburgh. It is a nicely laid out and decorated restaurant with excellent food and service. In the warm weather, there are both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is not extensive however the selection is varied and very satisfying. We had the Pate de foie de Poulet (chicken liver) and the Escargot au beurre a l'ail (Snails) for appetizers. They were both excellent. Then we had the Carre d'agneau aux herbes (rack of lamb), the Coquilles St. Jacques (sea scallops) and the Filet mignon aux champignons (beef tenderloin). All three entrees were excellent, the lamb, scallops and the beef tenderloin were cooked perfectly, and they were very tasty. For dessert we "forced" down a Fromage de chaux (Keylime cheesecake), very good. The service throughout the entire evening was exceptional, very attentive yet not over eager, the various phases of the dinner were timed and served perfectly. We have already made reservation for our next event coming up in a week. Great place, good food excellent service and a very kind, friendly and engaged owner. read more

Overrated and Undercooked I ordered quiche. It was not cooked throughout and the crust was soggy as were the potatoes. Also, it wasn't hot. The cheesecake was also a miss. I was very disappointed. I had only heard excellent reviews. Also, the waitress never thought to ask why our food was practically left untouched when clearing our table. I just should have spoken up obviously. I honestly can't say enough great things about this place. I love French cuisine so up until my first time dining here, Poulet Bleu was my favorite restaurant in the city - but not anymore! Bertrand has classic French country dishes like beef bourguignon and escargot at fantastic prices. My husband and I were blown away by both the quality of the food and the atmosphere. We both agreed that it was the best meal and service we had received in quite some time. The only thing missing is French 75s, but with BYOB you can't go wrong. My book club read a memoir of a food critic and so the conversation quickly went to a personal review of our "best meals ever". One of my friends said her absolute favorite restaurant in the world is Bertrand. Naturally, I decided I needed to go. I went with my husband and another couple we regularly dine with. Everything everyone had was first class. Service was impeccable. The atmosphere was great, despite a loud large party sitting nearby. The owner is a charmer who offers just enough personal service to make you feel like you are a welcomed guest without overstaying his welcome. It's BYOB which makes it affordable. We enjoyed scallops, halibut and lamb which were all superb. The foie gras was something I will think about for days. The key lime pie cheesecake was more fluff than cheesecake. Chic and yet casual/comfortable, you will feel welcome and will leave well fed, from the incredible pate appetizer to the generous, delicious entrees. Classic French fare, BYOB. Highly recommend the pate, the chicken with oranges, the halibut, and the beef dishes. We've visited twice. The pace was consistent and the server friendly... the owner was on the floor both evenings checking on guests and adding to the feel that our business is valued.
