I have shopped at this neighborhood grocery store on a nearly daily basis for the last 30 years. Management needs to perform a thorough review of the customer service skills of its employees. One employee who wears gloves is especially surly and unhelpful. Today I was looking for a leek. I asked him where I might find the leeks. His response was "I have no idea. I don't work in produce." This employee has worked at Bert's for many years and can't identify a leek? Did he help me look for one? No. Did he offer to find another employee who either worked in produce or could identify a leek? No. This kind of attitude doesn't work for a grocery store that survives because of neighborhood loyalty. We need a QFC or Safeway in Madison Park. read more

This review is for their lovely floral department! After having dinner nearby and commenting on their beautiful flowers I asked the hostess where they were from. She let me know they get all of their flowers from the Red Apple Market down the road! As soon as dinner was over I made my way here and got a few different varieties to create an Easter mix. They price things like they want you to buy it. They're cheaper on several things than the big chain grocery stores are and I paid like 30 bucks and left with some snacks, good quality bread, orange juice, cheese, peanut butter, and jelly. It was almost like they didn't scan some things. I'm impressed and this is how a small store business like this stands out. Sure a lot of the quality stuff is more expensive but you buy that stuff and can cut corners with the cheaper stuff to make things work. We are lucky to have Bert's in Madison Park. Many employees have been there for 10-20 years and are always friendly. Bert's has a great wine selection, beer, butcher, vegetables, fruit, and more. Although most things are overpriced here, I used to come in regularly because I prefer to shop smaller grocery stores, and it is nearby. Over the past couple of years however,,I've been annoyed. The once friendly folks who work there have become quite irritable, to the point of rudeness. Another reason I used to shop here is I like to have an occasional cigar and they are one of the few places I could get a cigar nearby, even though they tend to be (surprise!) very overpriced. I was happy a couple months ago when they started to sell a larger cigar which was quite affordable ($6.50) and I started to stop in more often (usually spending $100 per week (at least) in groceries). The new cigars sold out and I reminded them to get some more. They did - and increased the price suddenly $3 per cigar to $9.50. So that's what I get for opening my mouth. What really sucked is that there was no price on the cigars and I'm 99% sure the guy just made that price up without consulting anyone. It is not a $9 cigar, but the dude didn't know that so he just decided to gouge me. I pointed out the ridiculous increase and the clerk was dismissive and rude. For this reason and the other experiences with rudeness and price gouging lately, I will not be back. Also, where in the world is baby bok choy $8:99 a pound???? First visit and needed to pick up some ground beef (lean) and rice to make for my dog who is ill. Bought two packages of 93% lean beef and came home to cook them. When I broke open the "bricks" I found brown fetid ground beef on the inside which had been surrounded with bright red fresh beef on the outside. The package indicate it had been packed on the date I purchased. IN MY OPINION there is absolutely no doubt that they took expired meat, dressed it up with fresh meat on the outside and were selling it as fresh. Horrible, disgusting. read more

I live in the neighborhood, and this is the neighborhood market. Very convenient for me. There are several parking spots. They offer a wide selection of plants outside and sometimes palates of whatever fresh produce is in abundance that day. Masks are required upon entry and the aisles are clearly marked with arrows for directionals (not everyone pays attention to them though). The staff is always super helpful and kind. They don't have every single thing, but not bad for a mini grocery store. Their produce section is quite vast. Naturally, the prices are much higher than any other regular grocery, maybe comparable to Whole Foods or more, but for regular everyday goods like Campbell's soups, peanut butter, condiments. You pay for the convenience really. One nice thing is they offer a lot of ready to eat chicken and other meats and some side dishes. They will bag groceries for you with their own bags due to COVID. read more

Have been using Bert's for almost 18 years, and feel very lucky to have the store close by. The people are really nice, they are amazingly well-supplied for the small size of the store, and they have beautiful flowers and convenient parking. I find prices generally on a par with other stores, though some items vary - sometimes less, sometimes more. They've been very careful about COVID protocols, and it's nice that their front door opens right where the milk and produce are, so it's always well-ventilated. I feel really lucky to have this store within easy reach - it's exceptional to find this neighborhood feel in this age of 'bulk' buying. read more

A very cute and quaint little market in Madison Park. It's kinda like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Madison Park to me felt almost like it was detached from Seattle. I forgot where I was for a minute. The town is almost straight out of a t.v. show. But back to the store. The store it seems, felt like it was for locals only, but without the snobbery. I wouldn't be able to afford to make big groceries here but there are lots of great specialty items and a good solid wine section. What I really liked was in the back there is the deli and where the hot food is served. The day I went, there were stuffed cabbage rolls in the pot. They looked homemade and smelled amazing. I hate that I didn't buy some. The customer service is the kind that I feel you can only receive in a small town. A far cry from the cutthroat, I don't give a damn attitude you encounter downtown. However.. it's on the pricey side, so I would not do my weekly grocery shopping here. Don't judge a grocery store by it's size. The store may be small but likely makes more money per square foot than any other grocery store. It's a regular grocery store that offers a small town/neighborhood feel,the employees are friendly and helpful and the store has almost everything you need (e.g. prepared deli items, fresh produce, solid wine selection, fresh soup) plus if you are low on cash you can always charge it to your 'store account' by giving them your phone number. Terrible service, zero cleanliness, and the food is never fresh. This place only exists because its the only grocer near Madison beach. In the off season this place is terrible, the turnover rate for the food is slow so "fresh" fruit and vegetables will typically have mold, anything in a bag is already past its expiration date, and it to this day is the only place I have ever been to with all of the ice cream in the fridge being expired but still for sale. Having a quality neighborhood market is vital to sustaining a community like Madison Park, helping to eliminate long drive across town or other neighborhoods. Red Apple has a nice variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses and wines. Complete with their own deli section, you can tell they've placed some thought into being a staple of the community. The fact that they are a bit out of the way and larger than a typical small neighborhood market does mean their prices are a bit higher. Some of their items can be found at Trade Joe's (if that's on your route) for half the price, but you paying for convenience at Red Apple - and supporting a local neighborhood market. Viva community markets! The only downside is that their meat, fish and poultry selection is pretty small and they don't seem to carry free range of organics that you might find at Whole Foods. read more

I'm rating Bert's almost exclusively on the awesome plants I end up finding here. You wouldn't expect it, but this little grocery store has great prices on plants for your garden whether you want perennials, annuals, flowers, veggies, shrubbery, you name it! During the summer they always seem to have a good selection of herbs, succulents, and ground covers. Forget going to nurseries and paying $15 for euphorbias. I've gotten euphorbias for $5 each here! They also have neat selections of grasses which I've bought for some of my window boxes. As fall and winter approach, I get my cyclamen and violas here for my winter yard color. Unlike going to a nursery, you can't assume you'll find a specific plant here. But if you are a plant-a-holic (and I totally am), you can come here to wander and get your plant fix without burning a hole in your wallet. I also go to Bert's for my supply of wood bundles during the winter months.The bundles run about $5.50 each. read more

I end up shopping here quite a bit because it is so close to my house. I even have an account here and they send me monthly bills, super convenient. It is a small store and strangely has carpeted floors but they have a full selection of common grocery items and will even surprise you with specialty items. Since I work in the area, this place is my place to go for snacks, lunch whatever... if I don't feel like eating at work. The staff are all friendly and helpful. Especially if I need to pick up those liter bottles of soda for work. They are stacked high, that I always end up asking for help, like a damsel in distress. The hot foods are pretty good and taste fresh, depending on what they have for their soups and entree selections, you can make a pretty decent meal. Pay by the lb, of course. I don't always do my grocery shopping here, due to "Madison Park" prices, but I do pick up things that are on sale. They have a pretty good wine selection, with an actual person who knows his wines. He is pretty helpful in finding you a wine according to your taste and budget. The little market that could. Great spot for all the convenience within a walking distance. They may be pricey but the products are quality. Got the crab cakes and was pleasantly surprised. They a decent selection of wines and the bread here is fresh from the local bakeries. Veggies are fresh and crisp. They have a nice ethnic section for your taco night or sushi or indian. The seafood selection is very limited. Meats are fairly stocked. I really like the cheese selection here while small they are delectable. Also the deli has some good local hummus, again pricey but good. Overall this a good spot to shop for those need in a crunch or filler supplies but if you plan on doing you daily grocery shopping here , be prepared to shell some dolla bills. They have a captive audience in Madison Park because the closest grocery stores are 2 miles away, and they take advantage of it. Most of the staff are super nice and I like that, but cannot justify the high prices. There are also at least 2 people standing outside asking for money. It is what it is - Madison Park - so expect prices to be at least 20% higher than say, Safeway, but you pay for that convenience factor. Their flower and wine selections are superb. Miserable overpriced place with very inconsistent customer service and a strong rat smell in the summer. Have lived near it for years and witnessed multiple atercations between staff and customers, one where the older woman with pageboy gray hair raised her voice and berated a customer, saying "oh, boo hoo" as the customer left. Wine guy will always steer you wrong, produce is old, registers are not wheelchair accessible. Have heard antisemitic remarks from staff. Bathroom is filthy. Basement break room is rumored to be quite dirty. We have sworn off of this rat hole many times since moving here, but its convenience still warrants the occasional visit. I've worked in grocery, and this is a terrible grocery and appears to be a terrible place to work.
