Besa did not miss. The starters and salads stole the show but everything was spot on. The service felt a little cold at first, but was very professional all around. In retrospect, their crowd probably appreciates that. When we arrived early we were offered a seat at the bar to start which I really appreciated. Crumbs were cleared after our appetizers and new flatware which is always a nice touch. The flavors were very interesting without being intense or overwhelming. I was boring and got a filet but quality was great and was cooked exactly how I ordered it. Portions were substantial and we actually over ordered which surprised me. Everything worked together very well even when ordering various dishes to share. For 3 people with cocktails and coffee we got out of there at just over $100 a piece, not bad at all! So after my trip to Besa I have to say it is just three stars for me. I agree with the other reviewers that the space is beautiful, it's a really cute restaurant. The staff was very attentive and nice, I liked our waiter. However, the food was just ok and I'm not really satisfied with that at these prices. I ordered the Halibut. And while the presentation was beautiful, it needed just a little more flavor. For the table we had the Crispy Brussel Sprouts and the Triple Cooked Fries. Now the fries, I wish they would have just cooked them twice because they were just a little too hard. (not sure why you have to triple cook fries anyway lol). The brussel sprouts were good though, possibly the best thing on the table. Now for the drinks! If you know me, you know I love a good craft cocktail:). An exquisite meal and wonderful service - Chef Kyle Schutte truly puts thought and flavor into every dish; his culinary expertise did not disappoint. The Sea Scallops has a unique combination of both savory and sweet, it was incredibly delicious. Finishing with dessert, Object Orange pays homage to the famous orange painting of blighted homes in Detroit. The ice cream and orange & annatto custard paired with peanut brittle was amazing. Besa is an upscale, swanky and sleek restaurant in the heart of downtown Detroit. This Resto is definitely a great option for a special occasion or a hot date.This was the first restaurant that I have been able to dine inside the restaurant since the reopening post COVID and they are clearly taking the necessary precautions to ensure their diners are safe. This restaurant is not geared towards sharing many small dishes so we opted to order several starters to sample and order our own main dishes. To begin we had the tomato and corn salad, beet salad, watermelon salad and meze platter. All salads were quite simplistic but tasty and highlighted the freshness of the ingredients. They were all simply dressed In a light oil and vinegar dressing which complimented the veggies. The meze platter was very misleading as we expected to have a traditional Mediterranean style melange of olives, dips and vegetables. This dish was very minimal and an assortment of sparse pickled veggies without any real substance. We all agreed that we would not order this dish again In e future. For the main dish I had the seared salmon entree. The salmon was cooked perfectly with a buttery smooth Center, crispy skin and it sat atop a cauliflower purée. The purée was rich and smooth and complimented the hearty grilled greens and mushrooms that adorned the fish. My friend ordered the grilled zucchini entree. The zucchini was cooked well with a toothsome bite and a convincing roasted flavour. The vegetable was perched atop a bed of roasted chickpeas and finished with a heaping pile of grilled greens. Had dinner at BESA last night. To say that the food was outstanding is an understatement. In my opinion, it is one of the best restaurants for which I have ever had the pleasure of dining. The menu is extremely innovative across the board (i.e, cocktails, apps, entrees, and desserts). Octopus and scallops are standouts. Service was also impeccable and ambience is great. One question: is this place a front for a money laundering operation? If you don't feel like reading further the gist of my opinion is Besa was overpriced, pretentious, and the food wasn't anything noteworthy at all. If you're going to have a white tablecloth establishment, on a corner in bustling downtown, then make certain the food tastes as good as you're charging for it. I don't mind paying out the nose for a dinner if I feel like the food was worth it. This food was FAR from worth it. We got the calamari, Brussels sprouts, corn soup, and lamb pasta. I can't speak to our friends dishes but they weren't much happier than we were. Onto the food. The calamari while cooked nicely was bland. Just a plate of white blandness. It lacked any salt or acid to balance the creamy sauce it was on which made for a very meh plate of food. The Brussels were probably the only high point of the meal and while they were great, they felt like something that belonged on a menu at your local pub. Crispy, sweet and spicy! The corn soup was annoyingly small and expensive for what it was. It legit tasted like the Japanese powdered cream corn soup I buy at H Mart and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's what it really was. At 8$ for a bowl the size of a mug, we were pretty displeased with this dish. Finally the lamb belly ragu.$24 for decent noodles and thee blandest sauce I've ever tasted. All that tomato and lamb and not a hint of nuance to the dish. If you want a good ragu check out Selden. They always have one on the menu and it's always great. This pasta tasted like it came out of a can, and that's not an exaggeration. In fact that has to be my biggest gripe with the food here. Despite the enormous price tag, it felt like what I was eating came from my college's Sodexo run cafeteria (for reference Sodexo supplies many jails/prisons/schools with food service). I think that's what pissed me off the most about our experience. I get it, you have some astronomical rent to cough up each month... in that case I suggest scaling back on the try hard and no doubt pricey decor and focusing the money on the food and its production. There wasn't even one locally sourced ingredient on the menu ffs! Final verdict: if you value your money, skip Besa and opt for something else. Final PS: fire the hell out of your graphic designer bc they did you real dirty. The menus are a nightmare graphically speaking. read more

This place is just okay. There's something about these "white table cloth" restaurants in Detroit that do not feel authentic to me. They make the ambiance really nice then the menu is super limited and expensive for no reason. I had the watermelon salad to start and it was a couple of watermelon chunks barely topped with cheese and a vinaigrette/oil (not worth it). I ordered the sable fish for my entree and ended up sending it back. The fish was watery and bland and the risotto that came with it was also bland, just wasn't a good dish flavor or texture wise. I replaced the sable fish with the prawns. The prawns were good! Cooked to perfection, I really enjoyed that entree. Service was great, ambiance is nice. Went here last night for a birthday celebration. Overall I was very pleased with my meal and the experience of going. The Agnolotto pasta was underwhelming - the portion was tiny and it was not very flavorful. However, the scallops were good and the portion was more than enough. The green curry soup was also very good, I would highly recommend it. The curry was not overpowering by any means. I probably will not come back, but I also don't regret going. My neighbor and I visited this place yesterday. Unfortunately it wasn't a good experience. We walked up to the bar and waited for the bartender to come. A blonde haired woman with no name badge approached us eventually - I don't know what I should have expected, but she didn't seem as if she felt like dealing with us. Instead of introducing herself and asking how she could help us she immediately blurted out that we couldn't have Starbucks cups inside. My neighbor explained that we did ask the manager. After she cut her eyes over to the manager, I felt so uncomfortable, yet my neighbor insisted that we just stay. She reluctantly got our drink and told us that we had to drink it inside. I'd like to know if this is normal behavior and if this is usually accepted because she was so comfortable with us feeling mistreated. We finished our drink quickly then left. Came here on my wife's birthday. We chose this place out of the blue after looking online at new restaurants in Detroit. We made a reservation and arrived a little early. We were seated and get right into the meal. We ordered the gnocchi and cheese plate to begin with. I really enjoyed both of them. The cheeses specifically paired well with the wine. We both split the special that night which was the cowboy ribeye. It was a 40 day old dry aged, bone in steak. It was fantastic. The char on the outside and the softness on the inside was remarkable. I will give props to the chef that cooked it. I would probably have gone down a little bit in cook time. I felt that medium was a little too cooked but non the less it was a great piece of meat. We also ordered fries and mushrooms. The fries were ok but the mushrooms were awesome!!! We both really enjoyed the food a lot here. For desert, we ordered the marshmallow and that was interesting. I had the opportunity to dine at BESA as a reward for winning a contest at work. We had a preset menu so I can't speak to the regular menu. The overall experience was top notch and memorable. I was greeted as I came in and the ambiance is modern and classy. We were seated with a view of the street and had room to move and privacy to have conversation without having to yell. Our server was excellent and gave a descriptive presentation of each of 9 courses. The food was out of this world! I have a degree in Hospitality Business and am a bit of a foodie and I was blown away by the creativity of the chef and the attractive plates, bursting with colors and textures. When I read a menu and I don't know some of the words, I get excited and BESA did not disappoint. Each course was masterfully prepared and perfectly cooked. I havent YELPED in a while because I feel like its mostly disgruntled people wanting attention but alas here I am. BESA give yourselves a round of applause for possibly the worst meal ive had in my entire existence. Beautiful location, beautiful marble bar BUT that is it. We sat at the bar. The bartender was less than personable and seemed very smug. The other bartender who was not waiting on us picked up the slack for the other one and at least refilled our drinks and smiled. This brings me to the "worst meal ever". THE TROUT. What the actual eff? Pan seared trout (cooked perfectly btw) with baby food butternut squash (no seasoning, no broth) literally a squeeze of baby food, two brocollinis and some fish sauce. My husband and I both were floored and actually it made us laugh. There was no rhyme or reason for these flavors. It did not make sense... did i mention the CHOCOLATE sprinkled on the top? A good bartender/server would have noticed that we hated our dish and offered something in return but not here. Perfect spot for the millennials who do not have taste buds, want instragamable spots and want to hear ARIANA GRANDE on the speakers while enjoying a 150+ dinner. Kudos. If you haven't been and you're a foodie and like to check out new places I would recommend going. The restaurant is two levels and decor is awesome. We had a larger party so we were seated downstairs. I also noticed downstairs they had a wine room where you can book a small (12-15) party and also they have lounging area you can sit/reserve if you are just having drinks which I really liked! The menu is more alacart I would say than small plates, but of course you can order to share. Their charcuterie and cheese boards did sound amazing, so if I come back I will have to try the board. The pasta are all extremely small which they explain in the beginning and are meant to be a starter. The fried chicken is extremely juicy and tender and I enjoyed the butter lettuce salad, just not something you see on a lot of menus. The fries are great to nibble on and a huge portion to share. Lamb shank served on top of a parsnip puree that tasted like pumpkin pie. The good news was the parsnips were so bad that they distracted from the dried out lamb shank. My wife had the fried chicken. Only had two bites of sweet awfulness. Another reviewer noted that dish was overly sweet. So bad. But wait there us more sweet; triple cooked fries with super sweet dipping sauce, gross. There was one item that wasn't sweet, in fact it was void of any seasoning, pork belly. Bland, dry, and served with a pasty umami sauce the despite the intent lacked any flavor. The latest stop on our whirlwind holiday dining tour of the new Detroit spots led us to Besa with a group of 6 on a recent evening. This is the rare place that managed to surprise me with its opening, since I hadn't heard a word about it before it opened its doors. Design itself is very modern and upscale, a combination rather new to the city of Detroit, but will be familiar to frequent Chicago or NYC restaurant visitors. Style of cuisine can best be described as contemporary American with a flair for the construction of artistic platings and mind-bending ratios between the size of the serving dish, and what's presented on it. In fact, the entire experience reads like everyone trying their best to copy Boka from Chicago. Unfortunately, the food itself didn't carryover. We ordered a smorgasbord of dishes to share amongst us, starting with the brussels sprouts and beef tartare. Brussels were one of the favorites of the nights, with a slightly too sweet sauce, but well seasoned, and surprisingly generous with the amount. Tartare was pretty good, loved the addition of dried blueberries, but needed salt. This is a theme that will become repetitive. I was in the mood for a soup, and ordered the "vichyssoise" next over the green curry offering. Imagine my surprise when in its place came a potato waffle with a leek sauce and sautéed leeks. Thankfully, the flavor and texture made it my favorite course of the night. Tried a bite of the green curry soup from a fellow dining companion, and it tasted like someone's idea of a green curry soup made for people afraid of Thailand. It tasted of coconut milk and nothing else. Next came the duck liver mousse donut. It managed to surprise with its massive size, but excitement melted away once it hit my mouth. Concept was great, duck mousse inside a rich donut with a cranberry glaze to cut through the immense richness. Unfortunately execution left plenty to be desired. The mousse itself had a strange flavor difficult to pinpoint even for someone who loves offal. Perhaps the inclusion of some type of spirit? The donut was cold and heavy, would have ate better warm and yeasty, less cake like. The wife's agnolotti was quite good, and well seasoned in comparison to almost every other plate served. Tasted like a pasta version of manakish to those in the area familiar with the tasty Lebanese staple. For an entree, I went with the half duck, as I love duck, and it was recommended by our waiter. The biggest disappointment of the night. The duck was cooked by someone who may have fallen in love with the sous vide machine, but the result was a strange grayness on the outskirts followed by a not quite pink on the insides. Fat hadn't fully rendered to my liking and there was no crispness to the sliced breast. Leg, which I thought had been confited, was instead tough and dry. Worse yet was the carrot puree, which was carrots and water. It tasted like it came out of a can marked Gerber. The dish itself was a simplistic utter disappointment lacking in anything resembling flavor. Bland on top of bland, layered with more bland. I don't look to be negative, and truth be told, at an average restaurant the lack of complex flavor profiles or even simple seasoning might be forgiven, but this restaurant doesn't appear to be trying for average, and the check certainly did not replicate my last trip to Coney Island. Total for the 6 of us came to north of 600 dollars. For that type of money (and a $48 duck dish), I simply shouldn't be relegated to staring longingly towards the salt shaker on the adjacent table. There are far too many restaurants downtown that take a few ingredients and make them sing with fat, spice, salt and acid leaving you hungry for more. The execution here needs to take a monumental step up to be considered on equal footing. Cocktail/wine list is served on a tablet ala Bistro 82, and the one cocktail I tried, a rye pineapple concoction, tasted like the bartender forgot the rye. Service was a strong suit and the attention paid by staff and management showed. Complimentary glasses of champagne were a thoughtful touch and did not go unnoticed. All told, design, decor, service and plating to rival some of the cities best, but execution in the kitchen and the lack of any type of penetrating flavor left plenty to be desired. read more

After our first time at Besa, our friend who went with us wrote a less than favorable review, and was contacted by the owner or manager asking us to come back and give them another try, so we went again this past weekend for round 2. The service was excellent and they really made an effort to make us feel welcome, and they comped about half the meal for us, which was a very nice gesture. However, I think this is probably the last time that we're going to go there. Almost everything we had this time was better than the first time, but the food just isn't up to the level that we think it should be for the type of restaurant they're trying to be. If I was to explain it in a single sentence, there's too much focus on fancy techniques and not enough on the basics of flavor, texture and seasoning. Both times we've been there, several dishes were lacking seasoning. This time around, we ordered 3 appetizers and 3 entrees, and didn't repeat anything that we got the first time. The first two dishes that arrived were the best things we ate. The pork belly appetizer was very good, but the real standout was the cacio e pepe macarons. This is one thing where the concept of the dish is very creative and the execution matches the ambition. It takes an item that's on a ton of menus everywhere and puts a very cool spin on it, while retaining the flavor and soul of the original. It's a black pepper macaron with a parmesan cream in the middle. Very good flavor and a cool interpretation. The third starter, though, illustrates where Besa seems to miss the mark consistently. The raw bar items just seem to be extremely overpriced, and lacking in seasoning. We got the prawn ceviche, which is a dish that costs $19, and looks to be one prawn cut up into 5 pieces, with some popped sorghum and what I think was a citrus dust, which had very little citrus flavor. The result is some raw shrimp with no real acid like you'd expect from a ceviche. The entrees were a mixed bag, too. Our group ordered the fried chicken, ribeye, and scallops. The chicken was a bit dry, and underseasoned, and oddly, it tasted better with the breading taken off. My scallops were the best of the three dishes -- the scallops were nicely cooked, the pork belly added a nice salty element, and the pickled onions added a nice bright element to it. My only criticism is that the amount of polenta in the dish is out of proportion with the other elements, and lacked seasoning. Overall, it was a pretty decent dish. My wife's ribeye was very nicely cooked, but the rest of the dish just didn't make much sense. It came with a couple of little potato balls some compressed green apple (also in ball shape), and a pile of fried wheatberries. This dish really is an illustration of the problem with a lot of the food here. It was 4 or 5 nice slices of meat, with 2 or 3 little 1/2" balls of potato, a huge pile of oily, underseasoned wheatberries (basically seeds), and this compressed apple which had an unpleasant mealy texture and no real flavor, and didn't really add anything. The meat wasn't well seasoned and the wheatberries might have been more successful if they were seasoned and if there were just a few to give a bit of texture, but there were way too many of them, and it's just not pleasant to eat that many of them. There was also some thyme still on the stem sprinkled around, and that just seems like a lack of attention to detail. As we were eating our entrees, we finally asked for salt, which is not something we ever do in this type of restaurant, but it's been very consistent through two meals that they really need to shoot the lock off salt and pepper back in the kitchen. So, I'm sticking with my 3-star rating from the first review, which I think was a bit generous that time, but pretty accurate based on our second visit. With the restaurant scene in Detroit where it is these days, there's several places that I think are better than Besa and that are a much better value, so I can't recommend it with all of the other inventive and flavorful things going on in other restaurants in the area. read more

Didn't know what I was getting into. This place is very hip and I really like the look, but 3 bartenders in and I have to flag 1 down to get a food menu. It was not a busy time. Again I flagged 1 down to order. They did not have the porchetta, which I was looking forward to. Instead I ordered the Angolotto. It was really good, but more of an appetizer than an entree. I didn't mind the price, but with a little more communication, my night would've gone better. Some tips: Offer a food menu when sitting down at the bar. Maybe spend less time arranging your mis en place tray and look up to see someone is looking straight at you ready to order. Trendy, fine dining in the heart of downtown Detroit. Besa has a great atmosphere, elegant and sleek. t's fun to sit by the window and people watch on Woodward. The food was all delicious but some dishes were very small portions for the price. I got the agnolotto pasta and the server warned that it was small but it was definitely smaller than i expected. It was delicious but i wish i got two! It was very tasty so i might recommend it as an appetizer but not a full dish. I also got a side of asparagus but didn't leave feeling too satisfied. I got a cucumber cocktail and was not a fan, it was too strong for me. Overall the food, service and atmosphere were all great, just expect smaller portions which is to be expected at trendy restaurants! read more
