OMG- I lived in the metro- Detroit area for 15 years and never turned on this street ever. I wanted to try a restaurant that I had not been to and saw this one on FB and decided to do something different. I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant before. First, the restaurant is up two flights of steps and there is no elevator. I injured my knee and walked up the stairs. Second, when I was seated and shown the menu, I was shocked at the very limited options. They only offer white- meat chicken, no rice or plain sides. I was going to try the greens but the server said they put vinegar on them which I don't care for. The Brussels sprouts with corn is a hard pass. I had no other choice but ordered something that I would never put together as a meal: fried catfish, sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts with corn. The fish was fried hard and needed seasoning and the sprouts were forgettable. They brought out hot sauce on the side assuming all people want hot/ spicy food. I wanted tartar sauce and they didn't have a traditional sauce- they had a " Cajun- style sauce." My friend had a crab cake for $25. When I called about parking, the hostess mentioned the cash lot behind the restaurant and.a parking structure across the street. She didn't mention that it was extremely expensive, I paid $24.49 for 1 hour and 6 minutes in the structure. Oh, I almost forgot that they added a 20% gratuity automatically for a party of 2! So, overall, my catfish dinner, 1 crab cake appetizer, and $2 up charge for the Brussels brought my bill to $74. Plus, the $24.49 for parking was a $100 night with no liquor only to have to leave and go eat elsewhere as what I wasted money on left me hungry and unsatisfied for sure. read more

I appreciated an article written about the dress code and fine dining attitudes of this establishment. I purchased gift cards during Covid to help support local restaurants during shut down, and I was pleasantly surprised that we could still use them in 2026! We had tried to use them in 2022, but were told the restaurant was small and could not accommodate our party of 8, even early on a Sunday. Fast forward 4 years! We made a reservation for a party of 4. It would've been nice to know the restaurant was on the second floor with no elevator, but perhaps that is my lack of inquiry. We were warmly greeted. Our server was absolutely fantastic! She made wonderful recommendations, and our meal was delicious! We had the crab dip, cornbread muffins, fried chicken and catfish entrees with yams and collard greens. Our family is from the South (KY, NC, TN, VA, MS, & AL) and we cook southern food on a regular basis. The yams were perfectly cooked and sweetened. The collard greens had just enough density, not runny or too salty. YUM!!! The chicken was tasty and moist. Catfish was seasoned and prepared perfectly and absolutely delicious also. Served with Frank's! We finished it off with the skillet cookie dessert, shared by all. A great way to end a really wonderful meal. The restaurant wasn't busy, so food service could've been a little faster, but we enjoyed a leisurely early dinner. My only other comment is that with glass top tables, you almost have to use Windex when tables turn over. The water streaks on all the glass top just make it look more like a greasy spoon or diner and does not do justice to the great service or the quality of the food. Visited on a Sunday evening for dinner. Highly recommend reservations as it was very crowded. Dark, dimly lit but lively atmosphere. Very date night vibes. I ordered the shrimp and grit and collard greens. The food was fantastic. The shrimp and grits were so flavorful, warm and delicious as well as the collard greens. However I do notice that the restaurant was dirty. My appetizer plate has dried food on it (thankful I don't need it), the table wasn't the cleanest and my silverware had a hair in it when I unrolled it. The table was also a glass top and my dish that was glass was sliding all over the place when I was trying to cut from it. They automatically add 20% gratuity which takes them down a Star in my opinion. 3.5 stars, rounded down for cleanliness unfortunately. Where do I start, the service was extremely slow, we barely saw our server and this type of establishment the gratuity is included which is the issue the issue that service is typically not matched with the amount of gratuity you have to pay. My guest ordered a mocktail lavender lemonade it came in this small glass for $14 and it tasted average. For this to be an upscale soul food place it doesn't even include a cornbread I have never been to a social food place that dinner include cornbread. I wanted to order one to enjoy with my meal but the only option is to order a basket for $3 my guest wasn't eating. It was a rip off for one person, i didn't need that many for me. I ordered the catfish which is was pretty good hot and fresh but that's where it stopped the greens and fries were cold. The Mac and cheese was missing something but at least that was hot. With this in mind, my first recommendation is to make sure, regardless of which day and time you're planning on dining - make sure you have a reservation! And if you have a reservation during peak time, be prepared to have to wait a little before being seated. Now on to the fun stuff - the FOOD & DRINKS!!! Everything we ordered was delicious, seasoned to perfection and presented well. Overall, we were all really impressed with everything we ordered. I had the SB Jerk Burger, and asked for it to be light with the jerk - and it literally came out absolutely superbly seasoned and cooked medium as I had asked! I tried the Mac and Cheese that my father-in-law ordered, the Catfish fritters and the Kale Caesar & it was all 10/10!! The drinks were also really delicious. The ambience in the restaurant definitely gives grown and sexy vibes. We started with the side Caesar ( note: it is Kale) and the Cherry Green salad, with homemade cherry vinaigrette. Delicious. Neither salad was cold, which was a misstep. We asked that these be brought out first and unfortunately our entrees arrived before we could finish the salads, a big no, no. The ox tail was "fall off the bone" good and the shrimp and grits were tasty and plentiful. Both entrees were hot. The reservation system is badly broken. I made a reservation on Sunday, June 21 for 4 ppl on line for Thursday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. I tried to enter 5 but the Open table system would only allow for 4. I then called every day to check into updating the reservation from 4 to 5 ppl. Each time I called I got an automated response. When asked if the reservation was for that day I responded no and each time was sent to a number that said no one was available to answer. On Wednesday I went back to Open Table and saw that there was guidance to send an email to Savannah Blue to address concerns and questions. I sent an email and did not receive a response. On Thursday the day of the reservation, I called and when prompted, I responded that yes the reservation was for the same day. At that point, I was forwarded to a number which was answered by voice mail where I was asked to leave my number for a return call later. I did not receive a call. My husband called and left a message. He did not receive a call. When we arrived at the restaurant and requested an update to 5 ppl. It was if some great catastrophe had fallen upon them. After explaining the difficulty I had in getting a response from anyone, I asked what the proper procedure was if I was unable to contact a representative, I was told there was no procedure to address this concern and that I probably should not have come. That was a problem for me tonight but never again. This was my first and last time visiting them and while I no longer live in the area I will ensure that all of my friends and relatives who do live in the area an recommended this establishment do not ever come again and ask them to pass the word. read more

Fantastic! Enthusiastic staff and perfect food. Cornbread can be hit or miss in general. This cornbread is perfection. Crispy, soft, sweet, buttery. The lamb chops were top tier (that's what I ate) but the fried chicken that my wife had was mind blowing. I'm not generally given to hyperbole. Seriously: try this chicken. When we arrived (early for reservation), the people who greeted us were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, that is where the good experience ended. The waiter we had was very slow, we sat with empty glasses for over 20 minutes, he never checked on us. Their was 5 of us, the red snapper was Not good, could smell it at the far end of the table, another person in our party received the wrong order, waiter did not seem to care. Visited while in town with friends for a quick weekend trip. The hostess was very nice and our party was seated very quickly. The music was extremely loud, making it difficult to have conversation. The tables were also really close together. At one point as the songs were transitioning, we could hear the kitchen staff arguing about tickets. From a food standpoint, the catfish nuggets were great; however, that was the highlight of the dining experience. The oxtails were severely overcooked and we had to send that back. I have been waiting to go to SavannahBlue for years! When I heard that there was such a thing as "upscale southern" dining, I was ecstatic. We ordered the basket of cornbread, the fried chicken dish, and the jambalaya plate. We also ordered the macaroni and cheese, collared greens, and the black-eyed peas. I was very transparent with them that I am a southern girl and I was going to hold the food to a high standard! Our server told me that "several people from the south" had told her that their food was better than any southern dish I would find in the south. Sign me up!! Our food arrived and, let me tell you, those dishes swung between mediocre and repulsive. We sent the jambalaya back and traded it for the shrimp and grits, which was a little more palatable, but not by much. Additionally, the establishment was incredibly dark and when I used my phone light to find my bag, I was stunned by the dirtiness and crumbs/food on the floor. As a born-and-raised southern woman, please hear me when I say that this is not what southern food is supposed to taste like. This is an insult to delicious, soul feeding, home grown southern food - the only reason it has any amount of success is because there aren't other quality southern establishments to compare it to - but know that this place would be considered a dumpster fire in Nashville or Atlanta. We were greeted downstairs before heading home the stairs to the restaurant. Intimate setting. Super cute since it's decorated for Christmas. We started with cocktails - Smokey Robinson and Ida B. Wells. Love the names and the cocktails were yummy. We started with the warm crab dip with crispy wontons. The perfect start to our meal. Came here for a work dinner, and it was truly an amazing meal! My coworkers had really been hyping it up, but it exceeded my expectations. Love this place! I came here with some girlfriends and we started with drinks at the bar. The drinks were so good (and strong). I got the ida b wells and I loved how balanced it was. Our bartender was great. Super personable and definitely made the night better. I ordered the jerk burger and truffle fries and wow they were so flavorful! I was in town for work and my co-workers kept raving about SavannahBlue. They were closed on Monday so we opted to go on a Tuesday at 5:30pm. We found street parking (not free till after 10pm) and headed in. As soon as you walk in, there is a lovely hostess who greets you, asks if you have a reservation and sends you on up. Then when you get to the top of the stairs, another host checks you in and walks you to the table. Both of the ladies we encountered were warm and pleasant. We sat in the dining room and looked up the menu via the QR code. We started out with the crab dip as an appetizer and for my entree, I did the catfish plate. It came with greens and yams but I opted for double yams. It didn't take long for our food to come and it was good. I didn't care much for the chips that were served with the crab dip but my catfish and yams were delicious. I didn't try any alcoholic drinks but they had a bar so I'm assuming they had plenty of options to choose from. Our experience from start to finish was good! The restaurant has a very authentic old school Detroit feel to it. It also gives speak-easy vibes and I'm sure it's a staple in the city. It's Black-owned from what I was told but the patrons were diverse. Of course there's nothing wrong with this but it definitely highlights the mass gentrification that seems to be taking place in the city.
